AT&T Continues to Stay Confident About Losing iPhone Exclusivity

by Ethan on August 26th, 2010

We reported earlier in the month about AT&T downplaying and avoiding questions about the effects it will suffer if and when their iPhone exclusivity runs out. The tune is staying the same from the telephone provider but now they are citing tablets such as the iPad as their future lifeline.

Without getting specific about the rumors of a Verizon iPhone, Glen Lurie (AT&T emerging devices president) says that the company plans to keep “plugging along” at the same rate of success they are now. Yeah, right… Read More

Just When You Thought the Verizon iPhone Rumors Couldn’t Get Crazier

by Ethan on August 13th, 2010

Apple news junkies 9 to 5 Mac have revealed some interesting info, via DVICE, about what they say possibly being the Verizon iPhone. Just to warn you, the following claims may induce severe skepticism, high levels of doubt, and a good old-fashioned belly-laugh.

First, the rumored device is said to pack a next-gen A4 chip, which fires at 1.2ghz. Sick of that 3.5 inch screen? No problem, because this unicorn of a handset will up its traditional size to 3.7 inches. Personally if I were going to start a rumor, I would have at least made the screen 4 inches, but that’s just me. Last but not least, the Verizon version of the Jesus Phone would come with a relocated antenna, placed internally.

9 to 5 Mac makes no bones about this information being illegitimate, but don’t rule out the possibility that these specs would accompany the 5th generation iPhone. That doesn’t sound too crazy, however at this point none of this has much foundation to rest on.

What do you think? Will we see any of this come January, or should we put this device next to the “iPhone Nano”? Let us know in the comment section.

CDMA iPhone in Verification Process?

by Ethan on August 11th, 2010

The man with the Apple info, John Gruber, has posted a long entry concerning the latest information about a CDMA iPhone. As with all undisclosed releases, this particular product is codenamed N92. So what’s different about this rumor than all the others? Well, Gruber states that the mysterious device has entered Engineering Verification Testing (EVT) status. This is said to be just below Designed Verification Testing.

What may or may not be important to mention, is that the ordering of CDMA parts doesn’t necessarily equal a Verizon iPhone. Sprint uses the same technology, so as the “facts” stand, they could be getting the iPhone. While that is possible, I see this note as Gruber covering his butt, just in case nothing happens.

When would this mammoth of an announcement come? Some say at the CES, while others predict a special announcement. LTE, Verizon‘s next focused technology, is rumored to be their focus at CES, so unveiling a CDMA product at the same time wouldn’t make any sense. Wherever (if ever) it happens, January 2011 is the popular timeframe… right now anyway.

Gruber then goes on to question the popularity such a device would attract. The 1.7 million units AT&T sold in the iPhone 4 opening weekend is a difficult number to match. There would no doubt be lines, and long lines at that. We would really see just how many of Verizon’s loyal fan-base have been waiting for the beloved iPhone.

We at iDB will faithfully keep bringing you the details as they emerge. As the new year approaches, I expect this to be make or break concerning the validity behind the Verizon iPhone. It seems as if we’ve been hearing (and forgetting) about the possibility for years. One thing is for certain, a release this huge will be difficult to conceal, even for Apple. Unless of course they happen to “lose” another one in a “random” bar. Any thoughts?

Motorola CEO Sees Opportunity Of Verizon iPhone

by Ethan on August 11th, 2010

This story fits into the category of a CEO saying what sounds good, but with little believability in what they’ve said. MacWorld reports that Sanjay Jha, Co-CEO of Motorola’s Mobility group said, “I’m comfortable with the dynamic that (Verizon iPhone) would create”. I don’t know what kind of comfort he’s referring to, but the way I see it, Apple will be benefiting far more than Motorola from such an acquisition.

As we reported this week, more iPhone-to-Verizon rumors have been floating around the web-waves. The same Verizon who has pumped a lot of energy and money into the promotion of the operator owned OS. Android was first featured on Motorola, thus Jhasays doesn’t see Big Red deviating from their big investment, even with an iPhone on their roster.

I agree that the Droid is here to stay. I also agree with the CEO when he says he’s confident in continuance of loyalty regarding the promotion of Droid-driven Moto devices. What I don’t buy into is the chipper level of comfort that he proclaims, when it comes to the inevitable competition that a Verizon iPhone would bring. To be blunt, they would undoubtedly lose out on potential customers. How could they not?

I know Jha is saying what any decent CEO would say when he faces tough competition. But for those of us who don’t have to keep the shareholders and carriers happy, I say different. It would be like a starting quarterback saying he’s happy that his team just acquired a better rated QB to compete for the job. It sounds noble, but the level of truth behind it is questionable. Clearly a Verizon iPhone would mean more money for Apple, and less for Motorola. Again I ask, how could it not?

Here We Go Again: A New Round of Verizon iPhone Rumors

by Sebastien on August 8th, 2010

How many times have we heard this before? According to TechCrunch and “sources with knowledge of this entire situation”, Apple has submitted a large order to Qualcomm for millions of units of their CDMA chipsets for a Verizon iPhone run due in December.

Yawn!

Verizon CEO is going to do the keynote for CES in January next year so it would be convenient to announce they are getting the iPhone then. But realistically, I still don’t believe the hype. I still think we won’t see a Verizon iPhone anytime in 2011.

What do you think?

Yet Another Verizon iPhone Rumor

by Sebastien on June 29th, 2010

Are you tired of the Verizon iPhone rumors yet? Or maybe you can’t wait to dump the big bad awful AT&T for… well… the big bad awful Verizon. Personally I’m kinda tired of these but I always feel the need to pass the information rumors on because my goal is to keep you up-to-date.

The latest round of rumor claiming the iPhone will come to Verizon comes from Bloomberg, which was tipped by “two people familiar with the plans”. According to the anonymous sources, the iPhone 4 will appear on Verizon network in January of 2011.

An odd date for the launch of a new product for Verizon as it comes right after the holidays madness. Even more odd is that Verizon spokesperson John Johnson said not even a month ago that there was no plan for Verizon to support the Apple mobile devices in the “immediate future”.

I still don’t think Verizon will have the iPhone next year but hey, I might be wrong.

Thoughts?

It’s Official, Verizon Will Not Have the iPhone Anytime Soon

by Sebastien on June 3rd, 2010

How many times did I tell you that Verizon wouldn’t have the iPhone this year? One? Two? Actually more than that but I’m not going to link to every article about it.

Verizon spokesperson John Johnson told Beet.tv that there is no plan for Verizon to support the Apple mobile devices, in the “immediate future”.

Now we can play on the semantics of “immediate future” but to me it means, not this year, and probably not even next year. So forget all those unfounded rumors saying Verizon is testing the iPhone 4G or even the iPad on its network.

Again, Apple has a contract with AT&T to be the exclusive carrier for 5 years (there’s another 2 to go) and according to Steve Jobs recent interview at D8 Conference, both Apple and AT&T have been doing quite well: “AT&T took a big leap on us and decided they were going to trust us to do the right thing with the phone. And that’s worked out quite well for both of us.”

What does that mean? That means that whether you like it or not, Apple is sticking with AT&T and Verizon may have the iPhone in 2 years. But remember, Verizon is a CDMA network. CDMA is a dying technology and Apple is not used to betting on dying species, if you see what I mean…

How do you feel about that? Disappointed?

iPhone + Verizon Really Coming in June?

by Cody Lee on May 13th, 2010

While we, here at the blog, don’t typically chime in on the endless next-gen iPhone rumors, I felt compelled to do so on this particular piece of gossip. Talk about an Apple iPhone on the nation’s largest network dates back to, well, the origination of the iPhone.

In fact, legend has it that Apple had originally approached ‘Big Red’, with the iPhone, exclusivity and all, and they turned it down. Now why exactly a cell phone carrier would want to turn down the opportunity to add 4% of their competition’s customers to their network is up for speculation. Reported reasons have ranged from Apple’s phones not having a removable battery to the lengthy warranty process for malfunctioning devices.

Fast forward to 2009. The iPhone had sold in record numbers, but Verizon definitely didn’t go home and eat Ben and Jerry’s and watch chick flicks. With a struggling smart phone line up consisting of aging Blackberrys and Windows mobile devices, they struck up a friendship with search engine and now mobile giant Google. Interesting.

Interesting because today they now carry 5 Android handsets with more promised later this year, as well as confirmed reports that the two are collaborating on a tablet device. Throwing an iPhone and other Apple products (iPad?) into the mix will be like putting a scorpion and brown recluse in a glass jar together and watching them fight. Giving customers freedom of choice between the 2 would produce interesting results.

Another fact to consider is that we have all seen the photos of at least a prototype of the next iPhone and the device appears to have a front facing camera. Before you go and dismiss this as a ‘for self portraits’ kind of camera, better check your tech blogs a little closer, tons of developers and home brewers have already discovered tons of evidence in the code of the new iPhone 4.0 software pointing to video chat.

Nationwide video calling would be pretty sketchy on a 3G network, no matter how fast or reliable. But Verizon is definitely making noise with its LTE network it plans on rolling out in a handful of markets later this year. Still sounds like we are a year or 2 away from it being anywhere close to nationwide, would Apple waste time making a CDMA handset available this summer with LTE on the horizon? I suppose theres a possibility of a dual band 3G/LTE  iPhone.

But none the less all of my  skepticism get sidetracked by all the latest gossip that streams through my RSS Feed reader. CrunchGear is reporting that they have received tips that an advertising agency is working on an advertising campaign for Verizon and new iPhone HD. Not to mention numerous Verizon Wireless employees reporting that they are blocking out vacation dates around Father’s Day weekend but their not saying why.

If you’re asking yourself “Cody, what do I make of all of this information?” You’re asking the wrong person, I’m about as on the fence on this one as they come. Unless you’ve been hiding under rock for the last year, you are aware that AT&T has been reporting customer complaints in all of its larger markets for dropped calls, no service, and slow data speeds.

They have been long since criticized for their older network infrastructure  not being able to handle the millions of new iPhone customers they have added. You should also know that the original 5 year contract AT&T and Apple signed in 2007 has been publicly reported to have been renegotiated to expire this summer, June 2010 to be exact.

Putting their phones in front of  an industry leading 90,000,000 wireless customers would seemingly be a smart business move for Apple. But only time will tell, and the clock couldn’t possibly tick any slowly on our count down to Apple’s June event. In the meantime, post some comments, I will try to put any updates I find on this topic in the comments section!

Wall Street Journal Chimes in on iPhone Rumors

by Cody Lee on April 2nd, 2010

The iPhone rumors and speculation seem to go hand in hand. Even the iPhone itself was a rumor for years before it came into production. Now, If you sift through all the tech blogs like me every morning, you know that Apple is likely to announce an update to the iPhone this summer and there’s definitely no shortage on speculation. Will it have a front facing camera? Will they up the megapixels of the camera to compete with the 5MP Android handsets? As far as the software goes, will it support multitasking, will it have a universal inbox?

Perhaps the most consistent rumor is that Apple is working on a CDMA iPhone that would allow it to work on the U.S. powerhouses Sprint and Verizon, significantly increasing Apple’s market in the United States. But the response has always been “With Sprint just getting it’s 4G network going and Verizon launching it’s LTE network later this year, why wouldn’t Apple wait for those 2 technologies to mature before manufacturing a batch of CDMA phones that would have obsolete technology within the next 2 years.”

Both LTE and 4G are just fancy names for the next generation of cell phone networks. Think blazing fast download speeds, Verizon posted an average 5-12MBPS with bursts of up to 50MBPS download speeds in initial live LTE tests. I don’t care who you are, that’s lightning.

But none the less CDMA iPhone rumors seem to always regain life, this time it’s the Wall Street Journal throwing in their 2 cents:

Verizon also is upgrading its network to a higher-speed technology, so Apple has said it believed CDMA was a short-term technology. Apple later changed its mind as it realized Verizon’s upgrade would take longer than expected, said people familiar with the situation.

Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi estimates Verizon could help Apple nearly double the number of iPhone users in the U.S.

So if you popped over there and read the entire article, you kinda get the idea that this is more than just your run of the mill rumor. I for one would not complain, living in a region where neither T-Mobile nor AT&T get very good reception but Verizon blankets the area. Only time will tell what the boys over in Cupertino are cooking up.

I have to admit my fingers are crossed for a larger screen (my work phone is a Motorola Droid and the 4 inch screen makes my iPhone’s look tiny), 5 megapixel camera with flash ( 720p video? now I know I’m dreaming) and how about thinner with a faster processor and multitasking! Whew! Sadly Apple has proven time and time again that they add features and updates to products in small increments to lower the chance for hardware/software errors, so most of my list is not feasible.

But with Apple’s iPad pre sales exceeding expectations, rumors already flying about the next iPhone, and their stock at an all time high of $233 per share, I’d say old Steve-O knows what he’s doing.

What do you think?

Meet the new iPhone Killer: iPhone HD

by Juan on April 1st, 2010

Rumors about the new iPhone are mounting as June quickly approaches us. June is the month Apple traditionally hosts the annual Worldwide Developer Conference in which announcements of release dates for gadgets and software is made. This year is a little different as rumors mount about iPhone going to Verizon later this year, ending the choke hold AT&T has had with the iPhone.

Business Insider reports that iPhone HD, as it’s currently dubbed, is slated to have twice the resolution of current iPhones checking in at 960 x 640 (compared to the current 480 x 320), a 1GHz processor and a front facing camera. There has also been mounting rumors that Apple will finally permit 3rd developers to hook into the multitasking API allowing 3rd party applications to run in the background.

Other sites have posted claims that iPhone HD will be a few millimeters longer. This may or may not be true but it is possible since the iPhone is purported to be developed for Verizon and Sprint, both use CDMA networks which may be a larger cellular chip.

Thus far, iPhone HD sounds great and it looks like it’s already on it’s way to killing current iPhones. But why, exactly, is the device dubbed “HD”? Is the screen high definition? If so, will high definition really make a difference on such a small screen? Or does the device output video in high definition? I’m inclined to believe the rumor caters the latter. There’s simply no point in making a screen that small output in high definition resolution. But then again, I could be wrong. What are your thoughts on the new iPhone and this high definition rumor?
