You may have read that Pandav, iPhone dev of the iBart application has found tracks of a new iPhone in the usage records of his iPhone app.

According to TUAW:

Pandav noticed an identifier for “iPhone3,1″ in their logs. The iPhone 3GS hardware identifier is “iPhone2,1″, which means the next generation iPhone is already being tested.

I’m pretty sure this is only the beginning and we’ll be seeing more of these reports in the coming weeks/months.

Like every year since the launch of the iPhone, rumors are gonna go wild. Here is my list of rumored features I am expecting to see in the next iPhone:

  • 5 MP camera
  • Front facing camera
  • Multitasking
  • Washer/Drier
  • Dishwasher
  • Microwave oven
  • Air Bag
  • Taser
  • Water purifier

I know these features are kind of a stretch, but one can dream, right?

What are the features you want to see in the next iPhone? Don’t be scared to go crazy

DigiTimes reports that Foxlink, a subsidiary of Apple’s iPhone manufacturer Foxconn, is currently developing its own micro projector technology that should start showing up on devices as soon as next year.

International brand vendors, including Nokia, Samsung Electronics and Apple, reportedly all plan to launch handsets with built-in micro projectors by the end of this year, indicated the sources, adding that Foxlink is likely to benefit from the emerging trend due to its strong business relationships with Nokia and Apple.

Such a projector would allow you to project videos from your iPhone to an external surface. While that’s a lovely rumor we’d like to be confirmed, I think it’s very unlikely that we’ll see a micro projector on the iPhone for a few years. It’s still a very “bulky technology” that wouldn’t physically fit on an iPhone without altering its neat design.

iphone video

Among all the new iPhone rumors, this one has to be the craziest but also the loveliest one. Ok, sit down and imagine for a minute… What would be better for this Monday’s WWDC than having Steve Jobs himself coming back and unveil the new “iPhone Video” and actually announce it’s going to be on sale the very same day?

How does that sound? Believe it or not, that’s the rumor started by GearLive today and although I’m a little skeptical, I really hope these guys have good sources.

Talking to a few sources, it seems that the stars are in alignment for iPhone Video to launch this Monday. My understanding is that availability will be limited, because the plan was to launch in July. This means that Apple doesn’t have all the phones available now that they would have had in July for a launch – but you can expect regular replenishments of product.

I don’t know about you guys but at 10 am on Monday, I will be at my local Apple Store here in San Diego, following the WWDC from my iPhone and making sure I’m going to be one of the first to get my hands on the new iPhone if indeed it comes out that day…

iphone 32GB V3

I wrote about possible names for the new iPhone yesterday and it seems we have more info coming up about that.

Carphone Warehouse added four placeholders (see image above) to their inventory list for new iPhone models earlier today:

  • iPhone 16GB V3 Black
  • iPhone 16GB V3 White
  • iPhone 32GB V3 Black
  • iPhone 32GB V3White

TUAW also has received an anonymous tip stating that AT&T’s support website will be updated with “iPhone Video” (see image below) as one of the model choices when choosing Apple as the phone manufacturer.

These are just inventory references and I still believe the new iPhone will simply called “iPhone”. I guess time will tell…

new iphone leaked

These pictures were supposedly taken by an Apple employee. If that’s the case, I guess they are pictures of the dev website which will go live once the new iPhone is announced next week at the WWDC. The pictures were posted on iSpazio, where it says you can see a front camera and the speaker moved upward. I personally don’t see anything! (click on each picture for a wider image)

What bugs me with these pictures is that there is no carrier logo on the iPhone. Apple has always shown the carrier logo on it’s ads or website…

What do you think? Info or intox?

We’re just days away of finally finding out about the new iPhone. Will all these rumors be confirmed at the WWDC? We’ll figure it out soon enough. Something that no one has speculated on is the name of this new iPhone.

A little before the iPhone 3G was revealed last year, we all called it the “3G iPhone”. I guess we were close enough. Given everything we know about this new iPhone coming up, medias have started calling it the “iPhone 3G 2009″ or the “iPhone HD”.

Let’s try to be creative for a minute and come up with a few possible names:

  • iPhone III – I kinda like that one but I think it could be easily confused with iPhone 3G
  • iPhone 3.0 – could be, but how will they call it when firmware 3.1 comes out in a few months?
  • iPhone 3G Pro – no, too long, and too elitist. To me, “pro” means business
  • iPhone 3G 2009 – if you want my opinion, that’s gay (no offense)! No way Apple would pick such an unoriginal name
  • iPhone 3G 2nd Generation – blahhh, this long name just made me puke in my mouth
  • iPhone 4G – no, it would require a 4G network, which we don’t have yet
  • iPhone HD – nahhh. HD what?
  • iPhone Video – could be, but video is just one feature among many others. Why not call it “iPhone Copy/Paste” while you’re at it?
  • iPhone Pre – no comment!

Alright, if I had to take one wild bet, I think the new iPhone is actually going to be called the “iPhone that finally has a decent camera, copy/paste, video recording, and MMS 3G” ;)

More seriously, I think Apple will simply call it “iPhone” to avoid alienating users who have the previous models.

What do you think the new iPhone will be called?

With the announcement of a new third generation iPhone next week at the WWDC, rumors are flying around like crazy. The Green Room put together this graphical representation of all the rumors that are circulating around (click the image for a larger view).

Rumors are flying around about the specs of the new iPhone supposed to be coming out July 17. Can we believe rumors coming from some unknown factory in China? I don’t know. However, there are rumors we can trust and those come directly from John Gruber of Daring Fireball.

According to Gruber’s sources, the upcoming iPhone will carry a next generation processor:

Let’s say the rumors are right — and I believe they are — that the next-generation iPhone’s CPU will be running at 600 MHz. In the same way that, say, a 90 MHz Pentium was more than 1.5 times as fast as a 60 MHz 486, the 600 MHz CPU in the next iPhone will be more than 1.5 times as fast as the current 400 MHz iPhone CPU.

Apparently, RAM and storage will also be increased:

More RAM will significantly help performance, too, and I believe the new iPhones will sport 256 MB of memory, up from the 128 MB in all current models. Prices will stay the same — $199 and $299 — but storage will increase to 16 and 32 GB.

What about the overall look of the new iPhone?

Industrial design changes will be subtle, perhaps very subtle. I expect that cases designed for the iPhone 3G will continue to fit the new iPhone, and that the only colors will remain black and white.

Gruber also confirmed that the next iPhone will include a magnetometer, and improved camera that will shoot videos, and basic video editing capabilities.

I invite you to read the full article for more insights on the new iPhone.

There have been more than enough rumors about what the new iPhone will have. I say, give me a break. Although we don’t have an inside source telling us, think about it. Now, see our reasoning below:

  • Lit Up Apple Logo On The Back

Seriously? First of all, this would look horrible. It would be bumping out, making it look bad. On top of that it would kill battery life. And think about it, a ton of users use a case for their iPhone. A lit-up Apple logo would be useless for them. Don’t see my point? OK, here’s a mock-up by us:

iphone_mock-up_fake

That is how odd it would look. Plus, an apple that small would not make a difference. But it would kill you battery life.

  • Discontinuation of the metal band surrounding the edge of the device

Again, I think this is very unlikely. So far, the two latest models have had this. Though I’m not saying it is completely fake, it is unlikely. Maybe Apple will bring the plastic black / white front to the edge as well.

  • Rubber-tread backing

Unlikely! Apple has kept on going with the metal back for the iTouches and has only changed the iPhone to plastic back. Considering most other phones are plastic, this is also unlikely. So far, the only proof is this:

iphone-3-macrumors-084x084

It’s an image MacRumors posted. I dunno… but I have seen fakes before. However, from Apple you never know.

  • Sleeker design

Possible…

Now a small listing of a few others. Faster speed, internet, and processor are all likely. It is needed and Apple will most likely deliver. Longer battery is also likely. FM transmitter: unlikely! Think about that. Higher resolution camera is likely. Since most smartphones also have this.  Built-in compass also sounds likely.

“Revolutionary combination of the camera, GPS, compass, and Google maps to identify photo and inform about photo locations.” Doubt it!! I think people have things mixed up. I’m sure that they will let the camera take a pic and save the location and information about the compass. But I doubt the iPhone itself will inform you about the location. However, I think that with the data from the picture, when passed to the computer using Google Maps / Earth it will inform about the location.

Turn by turn directions is also likely as it is something heavily asked for. Also, a GPS company (forgot the name, think it was TomTom) posted somewhere they were looking for someone with iPhone coding experience.

This is just me reasoning here. I know some people will not agree, but that some might. But believe me, the rumors will keep on coming as WWDC gets closer. Don’t believe everything you read!!

On Tuesday Apple will hold an event where it will reveal iPhone firmware 3.0. Needless to say that rumors have been flying by like shooting stars but some rumors have been confirmed by Kevin Rose, namely the long awaited copy/paste! Yes, you read me right. Copy/paste will be on the next firmware update.

Recorded live during the shooting of a DiggNation episode (see video below), Rose also mentioned that the iPhone will not have video recording capability at this time. The most interesting revelation to me is that apparently, iPhone 3.0 firmware will do everything the Palm Pre will do, but even better. What does that mean? Will we finally be able to run multiple apps in the background (without having to use the jailbreak app called Backgrounder)? Will we have push email? A mystery that will be revealed this coming Tuesday.

Now some of you who don’t know Kevin Rose may question him. Well, don’t! Rose (founder of Digg, if you didn’t know) has some very good friends at Apple and has always been right when he revealed new iPhone features in the past. Always.

What else would you like to see on the iPhone firmware 3.0?
