You can now jailbreak your iPhone 3G running iOS 4 using RedSn0w. This version of RedSn0w will only jailbreak the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G.
At the time being the only way to jailbreak the iPhone 3GS on iOS 4 is to use PwnageTool. RedSn0w should be updated soon to jailbreak both the iPhone 3Gs and iPhone 4, so be patient.
According to the Dev Team, “For now, the redsn0w beta release supports only the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G at today’s 4.0. It’s still a beta, so you’ll need to let Cydia reorganize, reload, and update after using redsn0w.”
This being said jailbreaking the iPhone 3G iOS 4 with RedSn0w is fairly simple.These instructions are to jailbreak the iPhone 3G iOS 4 using RedSn0w. Instructions are the same to jailbreak the iPod Touch 2G.
How to Jailbreak iPhone 3G iOS 4
Step 1: Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed (iTunes 9.2).
Step 2: Download iOS 4 for iPhone 3G to your desktop from our iPhone downloads section.
Step 3: Update your iPhone to iOS 4 via iTunes.
Step 4: Download the latest version of RedSn0w from here.
Step 5: Point RedSn0w to the iOS 4 you downloaded in step 2.
Step 6: Select “Install Cydia”.
Step 7: Follow the onscreen instructions.
Step 8: Let RedSn0w do the hard work for you. Once jailbroken, your iPhone will reboot.
That’s it!
Now as mentioned above, this is just a beta release of RedSn0w, which means you might have a few issues. One of the most common issues is that the Cydia icon appears all white. In order to fix this, simply add the following repo to Cydia and reboot your iPhone: http://apt.saurik.com/cydia-3.7.
If needed, you may now unlock your iPhone 3G running iOS 4 by following these simple instructions.
anybody else notice iBooks doesn’t show any books available once you’ve jailbroken. I’ve seen another thread online w/ a few people w/ the same issue. I wonder if the newer beta fixes that. I used first Beta so now that the 3rd beta is out maybe someone who uses that can post if they have the iBooks issues.

let me get this straight. I am sitting on a 3G with 3.1.3 firmware, bootloader 05.09, and baseband 05.12.01
am I correct in interpreting that my previously jailbroken, but impossible to unlock, phone can be upgraded to ios 4, jailbroken, then fully unlocked so i can actually start using it as a phone?
i dont want to do any upgrading or anything until I can confirm my phone will not become completely useless if i do this.
@ModuRaziel, you would be correct. they probably just skipped 3.1.3 to work on iOS4 instead is my guess. You can unlock any baseband.

Oscar I don’t think anything will fix the wifi. AT&T doesn’t even know how to fix it. Apple suggests readying to factory defaults but that don’t work either

Like Lucas Kunert I too find that iBooks is broken by the jailbreak. I have done a number of restores and it works just fine until the jailbreak is applied, at which time the downloaded books delete and you cannot download more (they never finish installing)
Even the latest release of redsn0w had this issue. I don’t see any other issues, other than the White Cydia icon but this goes away when Cydia updates the first time.
The latest redsn0w activates battery percentage as well as multi-tasking and wallpaper. Nice.

If you are getting unable to recognise ipsw people you are most likely not using the most recent release of redsn0w, check the notes at the bottom of the latest article on the dev team blog for a direct link.
Either that, or you don’t have yesterdays release if 4.0 ? Or it’s for the wrong iPhone model ?

Have tried both RedSn0w 0.9.5b5-2 & .9.5b5-3.
- Clean install of iOS4. iBooks works fine.
- Jailbreak with either beta of RedSn0w, previously downloaded books are missing and can’t load books that you purchase in the store.
Looks like iBooks is broken by the jailbreak.

anybody knows how much time the cydia update need. I did all the JB and if I start cydia, it start to work and download files, but after a while the spinning wheel appears and nothing more happens.

The iOS 4 for iPhone 3G in the download section doesn’t contain an ipsw file so there’s nothing to put in redsn0w. Anyone know whats up with that?
jailbroke my 3G today and all is good except for when i open cydia it just sits at the “downloading packages” stage. If I cancel it it works but then as soon as i add another source (or update cydia) then once everythings installed it sits at the end saying “downloading release”

It’s very hard for me to understand why dev team does it all for free they could be earning huge amounts of money selling those jailbreaking and unlock stuff. Better for us anyway…As a beta version should I wait for the real one or jailbreaking this one wouldn’t make much difference?

Started Redsn0w and went to browse for the .ipsw file and it cannot find it. When I extract to browse I cannot find it either.
I had this problem on the 3.1.3 as well until I finally JB’d with Spirit.

I just figured out why the ios 4.0 file didn’t contain the IPSW file. You can’t download the file with IE. Try downloading it with Firefox and it will work.
Nomad try renaming the downloaded .zip file to .IPSW and then specify this file in browse for Redsn0w, it should work…

Can’t seem to find the .IPSW file i dowloaded on to the desktop. Followed the instructions and downloaded iOS4 software onto the desktop and when i open redsnow, it is not identifying the .IPSW file. What shall i do?
Ok, I must be either the dumbest or unluckiest jailbreaker today.
I have downloaded the iOS 4.0 IPSW file with Explorer, Firefox and Safari and put into their own desktop folders so there is no confusion. Out of the three only Explorer doesn’t show the .ipsw file extension. NONE will be recognized by Redsn0w as the correct ISPW even after switching extension on the IE Explore download.
What gives guys? I followed all steps verbatim. It’s only 900 in San Diego and I am about ready to start drinking heavily!
Are anyone elses third party apps crashing at start up? Any suggestions?
@Nomad You might check your folder options to see if you have disabled “hide extension for known filetypes.” Windows has a tendency to rename the IPSW file as a ZIP. Change the extension back and that could help resolve you problem. Hope that helps.

When you download the IPSW file, you should have an option to save it as “all files” (instead of other options) just under where you enter the filename. I read somewhere that an IPSW is really a ZIP file, just modified by Apple.
Thanks all. I have done all you said. The IPSW’s are showing, just RS won’t recognize them….still searching and re-downloading. For all….IE Explorer won’t correctly download the file as a .ipsw as stated above.
Currently re-downloading RS for iOS 4.0 to JB Iphone 3G (Windows/Vista 64) as well as the iOS 4.0 GM firmware. Beta did not work.

Nomad, try downloading with Mozilla firefox. i ahd the same problems and It worked for me. Download 3g iOS4 version. Hope it helps!

iPhone 3G (virgin, never jailbraked before) with iOS 4 jailbroken succesfully.
Took only a few minutes and then Cydia had to do some cleaning up.
Redsn0w 0.9.5b5-3 has checkboxes to activate Multitasking and Wallpapers, very convinient and all working fine.

No, you can perfectly jailbreak your iPhone using redsn0w, although the currect redsn0w version cripples the iBooks application.
Also, please remember this is a jailbreak only and (if it’s not unlocked by your provider) thus will not remove the iPhone’s simlock.

From what I’ve read, once you jailbreak using Redsn0w you can simply install Ultrasn0w from Cydia and unlock your iPhone so you can then use a sim card from any provider. Am I wrong?

Guys, i was following this and got to the DFU mode part and remembered i last JB with blackra1n as my sleep/on-off button is non responsive now. So im stuck on entering dfu mode. I’ve searched but no luck, wondered if anyone knew of another way to hit dfu without pushing the button? Im retarded i know :-/

You say you “unlocked” your 3G. Did you actually unlock it or did you mean “jailbreak”? They are two different things.

I can confirm the issues with iBooks as well. I spent a while trying to get it to work before I realized that it is a common issue. Hope there is a fix but I will just stick with Stanza for now. Well…until my iPhone 4 comes tomorrow. Then I won’t have any Jailbreak and iBooks should work just fine.
My problem is this:
I have an iphone 3G that I used itunes to update to 4.0
I have done everything step by step several times. But when I use redsn0w it goes through all it’s processes and then says done! however the jailbreaking does not seem to have taken place because it stays in recovery mode then immediately iTunes opens up and tells me that I need to restore my iphone. I restored several times and even tried using a custom IPSW but nothing seems to work to jailbreak the phone.
Does anyone have any solutions?
jailbroke iphone 3g to ios4, everything went fine. cydia app had white icon, so i opened cydia to fix that and it was “reorganizing” for ages, then screen went black, then went back to home screen and suddenly cydia, contacts, app store and calculator were gone, and mail icon had turned white. restored my phone but i would like to jailbreak again, anyone know what’s going on?

I had the same exact issue. After about the 6th attempt all was fine. I believe i was holding the home key about a half a second too long.
Jailbreak complete, but MMS is missing. My buddy has the same exact issue.
Both of us had fresh installs of 4.0 and used redsn0w. MMS is missing from messaging as well as in settings. Any suggestions?

Followed the steps above, no problems during JB.
However, multitasking doesn’t work for me, neither does the gas-gauge battery.
-Checked the boxes during JB
-Checked using iFile and the tags are present and true in the N82AP.plist
When I’m on the main screen double tapping home brings up the space where apps should be, but aren’t. No ipod controls either. When I’m inside apps double tapping home does nothing.
Any help is appreciated!
yeah im having the same problem as mao at the start like the first time i tryed it multitasking worked but after i put on a few apps, winter board for one i tried it after wards and it just didnt work

-Removed winterboard, multi-tasking now works.
-Battery % has an on/off toggle under settings > general > usage

Tested w/restore and have MMS before jailbreak.

However, I want to give my 3G iPhone to my husband with Tmobile. I downloaded the iOS4. I follow these steps, download this stuff, get him the Tmobile web plan and boom, he has an iPhone to use?

So I’ve already JB’d my 3G and have come to realize that the multitasking feature really puts a strain on my phone’s performance. Is there anyway to disable to multitasking while keeping the wallpaper enabled, all without having to reinstall Cydia?
Also, once Winterboard is fully stable on iOS4, would it then be wiser to enable multitasking or will it still be sluggish?

Jailbroke 4.0 all works except constantly in safe mode even after restarts. Restored and re-jail broke and still the same, even with nothing installed from cydia except what comes with the Jailbreak.

Just noticed that it doesn’t go into safe mode when it’s in flight mode, seems to go to flight mode as soon as it finds a carrier signal.

bro u have to download it with firefox cox IE does not give a ipsw file……also try downloading it straight without any third party download software like download manager or anything like that…………..
@valeriy (sorry mohammad) – in IE, the file comes down as a .zip, but it actually an ipsw. Change the file extension to ipsw and it should work fine.

i’d say don’t bother with the -4 redsn0w, too many people have no mms or data after using it. -3 worked but had no ibooks. I can’t find the -3 download or i’d use that. -4 is a waste imo.
I did this successfully and got cydia on my iphone but when I try to install any “tweaks” the springboard constantly crashes…I’ve tried to reboot the springboard, and the iphone itself and the springboard keeps crashing and going into safemode. I’ve also tried uninstalling any tweaks I installed, trying to located the problem, but nothing works. Even if I uninstall every tweak I added in cydia, the springboard keeps crashing….help?!
I’ve lost MMS, as well. I’m sure that the iPhone Dev-Team will realize the problem and fix it soon as they have done with iBooks. Waiting patiently for revision 5!
I have had my phone jailbroken for a week or two now, all was going great untill today when MMS and visual voicemail disappeared

china has a web filter on their whole internet, this site was probably just blocked by the stupid asians. try changing ur IP if u can, to a US one and that should fix it up good!

I was wondering if any of you have had these two issues. First off iBooks?? Am I missing something?? Next after updating and jailbreaking with 4.0 I used rock and itunes to restore ALL my cydia/rock apps i had. BAD MOVE. Ive gotten rid of all the ones that arent OS4.0 friendly. ie: Categories, five column SB, infinidock etc… I have two issues. One my ip address under sbsettings comes up as a mac address. Not IP. Two I dont have folders. Should I restore and jailbreak again?

Staying with 3.1.3/Spirit JB + MyFi. If you try to use this JB, it won’t work anymore.
I’m having a problem with the iOS 4 for 3G provided on your downloads page. This zip folder doesn’t contain a firmware file (.ipsw) but a large .dmg file. There’s a Firmware folder included, but no .ipsw file in that either. Is there something wrong with this download? I’ve redownloaded this twice and still no .ipsw file.
(There’s a popup during extraction that asks if I want to copy without encryption, but I don’t think this is relevant.)
Is there a firmware file somewhere in the iTunes folder I can point to instead? I’ve already updated my phone to iOS 4.

i think the mms problem is simply the version of redsnow..
i restored to 4.0 default.. then used redsnow .9.5b5-1(the one that u can only point to a 4.0gm ipsw) instead of – 4 (the non offical 4.0 ipsw only version)
i now have mms back and jb
however if u need activation this old version of redsnow does not help you. luckly for me i have my og sim and carrier so im fine..

Mate the zip file you are downloading IS the ipsw file… you need to manually change it. the whole zip file should end in .ipsw and not .zip… or download it using firefox and it should automatically do that for you

Hey guys, I need help big time.
I took the year off to travel and Im currently in Africa. Like an idiot I updated my Iphone 3G to ios4 ( i didnt need to because I only use my iphone for email and wifi internet), and now my phone is completely locked. It wont finish installing os4 because I am no longer an ATT customer. I dont have my ATT SIM card. I dont have an account with ATT. I’ve called Apple 8 times and they say theres nothing I can do. They say my phone will remained locked until I go home and sign up for a new ATT account.
Is there anything I can do?
Please please please help.
I dont need the to make phone calls with the phone, I just need to be able to acces my apps, email, web, etc.

@polarbear – yep, I set restored mine as a new phone (iOS4), ran 0.9.5b5-3 and i was working. haven’t ran -4 yet (not sure if I will, happy it’s finally working).
Those of you who are scared up upgrading to ios4 like me. You can upgrade to 3.1.3 and jailbreak and unlock it. Jailbreak the 3.1.3 using spirit and unlock using ultrasn0w. So far, I’ve confirmed this only for the iPhone 3g

Prior to the -4 version being released, it was available for download from the iPhone Dev team.
Quite a few people have mentioned they now can’t find it for download – I had previously downloaded it before -4 came out.

I’m sure the iPhone dev team will patch the MMS/tethering issues in the next beta, but in the meantime – clean install of iOS4, 0.9.5b5-3, then patch with 0.9.5b5-4 (deselect Cydia) has proven to work well with all MMS/tethering issues resolved and iBooks working too.

Matt what are you using to tether with? I tried the MyWi (No rock) but not having much success with it.
I am using the default inbuilt “Internet Tethering” which can be enabled under General >> Network. Unfortunately if your carrier does not support this, may not be an option on your phone.
I’m not in the USA though, so not with AT&T, but rather with Vodafone who permit tethering on the iPhone.
I do have the right version of the 3G 4.0 but it still says its unrecognizable.. =/

Ok, so while messing around Cydia, a popup said I have 2 essential updates. After everything was done, the Cydia thumbnail issue was corrected
I do have a question: Is checking “Enable multi-tasking” during the redsnOw jailbreaking process necessary since iOS 4 comes with multi-tasking already? Is there a difference between the two “multi-tasking abilities?”

If you have a 3G or 3GS multi tasking is not included in iOS 4.
@Manolo I had the same problem. For some reason it wouldn’t work with windows vista (update or jailbreak). I used windows 7(I have both) and the whole update and jailbreak process took about 10 minutes. A few things that don’t work(will cause crashes), infindock, 5 column springboard, iconoclasm, and some others. The reason backgrounding is not enabled when ya update is because it uses alot of memory. Older devices run slower and experience more crashes running 4.0. An example: I’m on an iPod touch 2g. In order for me to play COD Zombies I have to turn off all tweaks. Like springboard access winterboard etc. If I don’t it wont load or lags bad if it does. Hope this helps to clarify if you should really jump on that update.

Good luck with downgrading @Alick. The tweaks are what makes it run slow. Turn em off and you’ll see. If I were you I’d restore, JB, and unlock. Lay off the big stuff like iFile.

@JL its cydia/rock apps you have installed that arent 4.0 compatible. Only official cydia apps won’t let you install them if they’re not 4.0 compatible. 3rd party apps will. I figured it out by uninstalling them 1 by 1 till it stopped crashing. Its easier to restore and JB. You can keep ya pictures and notes by restoring. Just do the restore before you start installing cydia apps. If you use rock you can use theyre restore feature also. Saves alot of time. Ill tell you any other dock mod except for 5 icon dock doesnt work. It will cause crashes. As with 5 column springboard, infiniboard, certain widgets, cydgets etc. Best bet is to wait till ALL cydia/rock apps are 4.0 compatible. This update eliminates the need for Backgrounder, Categories, CategoriesSB, and Multiflow. Double edged sword kinda..
@dube well the tweak was cutting stuff out and it didn;t work. and after about trying to downgrade for 4 hours it just wont work the file lock at 3.1.3. the good news is after i install 3.1.3 and was not able to jail break it i decided to give ios4 a try again but this time i was going to jb it twice with two different programs and fine tune it from there and i also using sn0wbreeze i change the root parttiion size from 750mb to 1000mb after installing and restoring with my files everything runs so fast it smooth
so for everyone out there if you wanna not deal with the lag and slowness get sn0wbeeze 1.5.2 and then jb it and config your root partition to be bigger then the default

Remember change the default root partition and it should change the speed of the system and reduce lag a lot
Process went perfectly smooth; Cydia went white; ran the app; for 2 minutes; everything was ok
now all my “cracked” apps are showing white square icon.. any idea how to fix that?

I can confirm that by running redsn0w under compatibility mode for XP SP2 and as administrator this did fix my issue with it getting stuck on “uploading ram…etc”, now I gotz the pineapple dude!
I downloaded 4.0 firmware even though it’s already updated to 4.0 thru itune, but i can’t ‘point’ it to anything from redsnow and i cannot advance without pointing it. nothing pops open in the firmware file. what the hell?

do not jailbreak your iphone 3g if you have data plan. your data plan will never work. it will keep on asking you to update carrier but doesn’t do anything.

Hey guys, I think i really screwed up…..Infact i know i screwed up. i updated my iphone 3g to os4. then ran redsnow and when selecting the firmware i accidently selected the 3.1.2 ipsw file. amazingly red snow accepted it. n now after completing the process, my phone is still not jail broken. i tried running the process again with the os4 ipsw file but now redsnow wont accept it. But it does select the 3.1.2 ipsw file. i ran the jailbreak again but still i get the emergency calls only thingy with the connecting cableand itunes logo. any ideas? plz help

then go to the newest version of redsnOw (on mac) select your ispw, and jailbreak it again.. it should work..

Sorry, i had no issues at all with appsync. All of my cracked apps work like a champ, at least the ones I’ve tried. I’ve got over 200, so I’m sure there are some that don’t but I’ll prob never know. Good luck, I’ll let you know if I see any fixes. Peace.

I assume you’re unlocked? I have a foreign (non-U.S.) prepaid SIM in mine & it updates and syncs just fine. Or do you not have a SIM in it at all & you just use it like a Touch? If that’s the case, try unlocking your device & put any ol’ SIM into it.

@steve I instaLl os4 without jb running stock for a day see how it goes I think might have solve the lag issues but as for apps crashing I not sure about that. I keep everyone with the finds in 12hr or so and I update everyone about the speed up process too hint (root partition) size but I check again tonight

@stevep and everyone else i tried ios4 at normal for 8 hours the only different is it not jail broke but the speed is about the same without multitasking and just as basic function go still problems so i have conduced that is not worth the upgrade i downgrading to .3.1.3 and jb it. for all of these that are upgrading to ios4 and wants multi tasking please make sure you set the root partition to higher then standard ie:1000mb at least it give the phone some room to work with when multi tasking and stuff
other then that until there a better ios update 4 iso4 i going to 3.1.3 i keep everyone posted if i find anything different

@ Tony and Misie: I’m having the same issue as the two of you. I’ve even deleted the files and downloaded them yet again but I can’t get redsnow to point to the firmware. When I click on browse in redsnow, i go to the folder where i downloaded the firmware but there are no IPSW files to point to. Keep me posted if you find a resolution.
I’m assuming those having problems with the IPSW haven’t downloaded the firmware from iTunes? I had no problems at all other then getting tethering to work which is just the app issue when following Matt’s instructions.

I will add to this by saying:
Plug your phone into your computer and open iTunes. Reset the phone, do not restore from a backup. Once the phone is reset confirm you have iOS 4.
Now open up Jailbreak w/0.9.5b5-3 and run it. Browse to C:\Documents and Settings\YOURPROFILENAME\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates on Windows XP and on Vista or 7 Browse to C:\Users\YOURPROFILENAME\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates.
You should now see your file iPhone1,2_4.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw. Select it and complete the jailbreak. Once completed run the next revision Jailbreak w/0.9.5b5-4 (But deselect Cydia).
Matt was the first to post this and many including myself have confirmed it does work.
I read a comment saying it won’t work on explorer so I used firefox instead and it worked first time. So my problem was solved.
Anyone having issues with iPod downloaded cracked apps? Any app I get from appcake shows up with a blank white icon. When I sync cracked apps from the pc there’s no problem. Guess I could just download em on the pc. I have all the hottest ones anyway. Uninstalling appcake or installous frees like 1000 files cuz ya don’t need erica utilities or gawk. I’d like to know how to downgrade tho cuz I’m not feelin os4 at all. Too slow on a 2g iPod touch.

Ok fixed all issues by downgrading to 3.1.2. I’m not doing 4.x till they have worked out ALL of the kinks. Ot was just painfully slow. Plus I was no longer able to use my inav sterling silver theme. I do have a question though. Any1 know why it won’t let me upgrade to 3.1.3??
@tina I was having the same problem. Try using windows 7. It wasn’t working on vista for me. Got on 7 and it took about 15 minutes. 10 for the update and 5 for the jailbreak.
I just jailbroke my phone for the first time and it works great!
The only thing is that my iPod icon is blank! (I don’t really mind much) but other than that its awesome!
i must be having serious issues. im on windows 7 i have downloaded countless different IOS 4.0 and i downloaded redsn0w -3, -4, -5 and none of them seem to recognize the ipsw. what am i doing wrong. i have a 3G. its model isnt MC but is MB…. whats going on people help!
Ok. So we have iPhone 3G with IOS4 and jailbroke it last night with the latest version of redsn0w -5. No MMS, Visual Voicemail and it is running really slowly.
I want to do what Matt did and put -3, then -4 on to fix these, but my question is does this erase Cydia completely? I need ultrasn0w afterwards to unlock for t-mobile but the only way I know how to get that is through Cydia.
Any help is appreciated!

@dube there is away of upgrading to os 3.1.3 but what u have to do is upgrade ios3,1,3 stock non jail broken then u have to download redsn0w ..0.9,4 jail break ios3.1.2 then let it install over 3.1.3 automatically what will happen is the jail break will install over the 3.1.3 instead of instaLling 3..1.2 then jb. I know it works I spent hours finding a way to get to jb 3.1.3 and this is what I came across and it works. Let me know if u have any problems

When I point it to the iOs 4 that I downloaded it says Unable To Recognise Specified IPSW.
I’m using 0.9.5b5-5 and iPhone1,2_4.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw.
Is there something I’m missing? Am I doing something wrong? Do I have an incorrect file etc?

So I found a new problem with the Jail Break… If you install Hacked Apps, the App Store, will show them as having updates if they have them.. of course, you can’t update them, but it still shows up as having an update.. so you will have a # on your App Store icon….
only a problem if your bad and use Hacked apps, which we all know is wrong.. I was just “testing” something…

I have an Iphone 3g and I am currently using it on T-mobile. I used blackrain to jailbreak it and unlock it. I updated my phone so that I could have all the new features and I figured I could jailbreak it again. Having trouble doing that. I’m trying to follow the instructions step by step, but I don’t understand the Step 5: Point RedSn0w to the iOS 4 you downloaded in step 2. I downloaded the itunes 4.0 for 3g from this website and I put it on my desktop. When I open the redsnow winzip file, I click on the redsn0w file and click browse and select the ios 4 I downloaded on my desktop but it says “unable to recognise specified IPSW.

I tried redsn0w 0.9.5b5-4 with IOS 4, in an iPhone 3G (cant remember the baseband) and it worked perfect (it was already updated to IOS4, but not unlocked)!
Unfortunately I’ve been trying it again, with another iPhone 3G with baseband 05.13.04 (I updated it from IOS 3.1.2 to IOS 4), for two days now, tried all different versions of redsn0w (5-3, 5-4, 5-5), but after the second stage, stays in the “Waiting for reboot” screen, for hours!!! Tried removing all the options and leaving only the “Install Cydia”, but problem still there.
Any solutions???

I’ve tried a number of times to jailbreak my 3G now with iOS4. I’m with T-mobile, and have managed to unlock it etc fine. The only problem is that it won’t sync any of my hacked apps?
It took me a fair few tries and I had the same issue before when I jailbroke 3.1.3 with sn0wbreeze but I can’t remember how I actually fixed it!
I’ve just tried using 5-3 and 5-5 simultaneously like Matt suggested… can’t find a copy of 5-4 anywhere to download… still no luck?!

I did a jailbreak on my 3G using the redsn0w -5 beta. The previous iOS was 3.0.1. I updated to iOS4 in iTunes 9.2 then used redsn0w and the iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore copy.ipsw carrier bundle. Cydia and iBooks came up fine. MMS came up fine. My Visual Voicemail is completely gone.
I’ve tried re-jailbreaking with redsn0w (de-selecting Cydia) and disabling any Cydia/Rock apps to do with the phone (i.e. iBlackList). Tried resetting the Network Settings as well. No luck.
I don’t even really use it as a phone much, but this is, of course, the week I am waiting to hear about a new job. The ability to use MyWi far outstrips the hassle of calling into Voicemail, but still, it’s frustrating. I am trying to avoid restoring the phone completely, restoring iOS4, etc. Does anyone have any other suggestions before I do that? I’m waiting on an iPhone 4 but that may take awhile.

FIX: I just went through a day and half working on my iphone 3G. It was initially locked in cycle of reboot. The fix was to hold down power button and home for 10-15 seconds then let up the power and hold home for 10 more seconds. I connected to Itunes and got the latest 4.0 update. Then it came back to me saying unsupported sim card because I have a Tmobile sim card. It was stuck on connect Itunes screen and there was nothing I can do after that. I am going to give you the fix for everything I just went through to solve all the questions many people are asking. Go to procedures above and follow the steps perfectly. THERE IS ONE CHANGE to the procedures order. Update your phone first to ISO 4 after updating to Itunes 9.2 BEFORE downloading an ISO 4 (which you won’t need to do). The reason: there are so many ISO 4.0 downloads out there and not all of them work with RedSn0w 0.9.5b5-5 because it will not recognize the .ipsw file so I’ll point you where you find it on your computer. After Itunes 9.2 is updated and you update your Iphone 3g to IOS 4, run redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5. When you click browse in redsn0w, go to this path for XP. C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR NAME\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone then click on the ipsw file you just updated your Iphone on in that path. If you have Vista or Win 7, just to to users\name\app data and find the Itunes folder and iphone update folder. You can also search your computer for IPSW file for the path. Once you do that, redsn0w works and you are Jailbroken and Cydia will be put on your Iphone. Then to go Cydia and do a search for ultraSn0w to unlock your phone for Tmobile or whatever carrier you are using. Reboot and you will see all works with your sim card. Make sure you update your data network to your carrier APN and MMS or you won’t get data or MMS. Good luck.
So I restored my iphone 3g to iS04, used the redsnOw to JB. It completed the download, however I am stuck a screen with a picture of a USB connecting to iTunes and everytime I connect to iTunes, it says I need to restore my iphone. What am I doing wrong?

RE Tara: Check out post 263. Put your phone in DFU mode(10 sec with power and home then let up power button while keeping hold of home for another 10 sec) and go to the latest itunes and click restore and update on your iphone. If you are using other than A&TT sim card, itunes will tell you that sim card is unsupported. You will have the USB connecting to itunes on your iphone. Proceed with running redsn0w instructions and select the ispw in the itunes folder in your computer after you click browse in redsn0w. Key thing is you got to make sure you are in DFU mode while connected to your computer.
I think I have figured out why a lot of people cant get the ipsw to read…. Download the top redsnow not the bottom one.

Seems tnat everybody have upgraded their software to 4.0 from 3.1. I left my 3G on v.3.0.0 with 04.26.08 baseband (unlocked). Can I upgrade directly to iOS4 via iTunes, than use redsnOw or PwangeTool to jailbreak and ultrasnOw to unlock? Thanks.
I am on device tree now for about 15 minutes. Are we suppose to have itunes open when all of this is going on? I am wondering if that is why I am going nowhere and stuck on device tree with three blue bars showing.

@ daddytym – Thank you! Totally worked, have all my old texts (and Battleship scores!) etc. and everything works great once the baseband is removed. The key is to be painstaking and take your time – I’m bad at that but I did everything in post #263 and all is well, fingers crossed.
I did do one thing differently and that was just to install Cydia. I did not install wallpapers, multi-tasking, etc. The 3G just cannot handle it. Or handle it well. Maybe it should but let’s be realistic about the hardware. Things are still slow, but much better then after my first two jail-break attempts.

the same thing happened to me until I followed the instructions in post #263, and did not include wallpapers, custom logos, etc. in the install. Not sure if that was a factor or not, but everything’s working fine now. fingers crossed.
I JB my fone with redsn0w_win_0.9.5b5-4 & iPhone1,2_4.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw now its awfully slow and I really cannot do much with the apps, any help to fix this would be of great help.

WOW!!!!1 cant belive this worked even though i jailbroke 3.1.3 with spirit. could it be that i have 5.06 bootloader? i dont know, but by far the simplest JB i have done! not one single problem with it. i wasent going to do it and just wait, but very glad i did!
I Jailbroke my 3g 8g OS4 about 1 week ago. Everything is working fine. Im running with multitasking and backgrounds. It has slow the response time but is not crashing. All the apps work fine and I’m loving the multitasking. Thanks DEV Team.

How do I back down to 3.1.2? After following all instructions as directed, less than 10% of my iTunes and jailbroken apps (via Cydia and Icy) do not run. I had a jailbroken, unlocked and stable 3G operating on the T-Mobile network but wasn’t able to upgrade beyond 3.1.2.

That is not the latest version of redsn0w – it is on beta 5.
Also, it is a 3g – it’s not really hardware designed for heavy multi-tasking. Make sure you quit apps you aren’t using, even things that seem obvious like iCal.
Just making a quick observation. Most of the problems with the IOS4 is that all the applications are not compatible yet. If you had jailbroken your phone before and have many JB features and you JB for IOS4 chances are that one of the applications will crash and induce many problems. I’m running my IPhone 3g with multi-tasking, background, winterboard and sb rotator with no problems. The phone (3g) is the old one of the pack, cramming it with many graphics and complex backgrounds will slow the system. If you stick to the basics the phone can have all the features and still run pretty fast. One example is the sb rotator-= instead of having the graphics to turn i just enable the rotation at 0, this way I still run the program but i keep my memory low. Another example of how I keep my 3g fast is to always close all the multi-tasking icons once I exit. If I listen to pandora and read e-mail or take a call I close the other apps that Im not using. I suggest to JB with the latest fix and add the programs in Cydia one by one if one crashes your phone remove and try later when the program has resolve all the issues. I have no complain with the JB in my 3g. Thank for all that post your comments making it easy to resolve our issues. If you have any questions about my 3g JB let me know on this post!! Thanks, Trex

I may just be stupid…i’m not sure…but I have jailbroken my iphone 3g before with no problems many times…this time though i can’t seem to get this program to work. If it doesn’t hang…either at a number of places during installation, when it says it is finished, there is no cydia icon at all. I have tried 12 times now, each time first putting the fresh IO4 on it and then using redsnow here. I have tried earlier versions as well and no luck. I run it just as i’m suppossed to but when it completes…no cydia icon, not even a white one. Any tips would help out as I have searched via google and can’t find anyone with a similar problem…and its not like its my first attempt at JB’ing either.

I don’t know how to “close” the “multi-tasking” icons, do you mean the icons that pop up on the bottom when you double click the home button?
I’d like to think that when I close an app by pressing the home button, it stays closed. The feature is cool, but I rarely use it, because of the lag issue.
My phone really starts to run slow, and I have to power down and restart daily.
Other than the obvious upgrade to the 4, is there anything I can do?

To close the apps completely just press the home button 2x and then the apps in multi-tasking will appear. Press and hold the icon until they start to wiggle then press the x to close them do this all the time to prevent your phone from having does apps suspended hence slowing the Iphone.

I still don’t know what the problem is…I get to the “downloading jailbreak” status on my iphone 3g and it stays there for about 30 minutes and then shuts the phone off. When i boot it up, no cydia, nothing. I have now gotten this about 5 times in a row. I always put fresh os4 on first before doing redsnow…but nada. anyone else have any ideas? I am trying to unlock my iPhone3G, running iOS4, using redsn0w0.9.5b5 on windows7, and this is what happens:
- I downloaded firmware4.0 correctly
- I upgraded both iTunes and the firmware on the iPhone already
- Run redsn0w:
> select the firmware4.0 downloaded previously: it detects, accepts and proccess it
> connect the iphone and turn off: done it without a problem
> follow steps to put in DFU mode: done correctly
> it starts processing for the hard work, and…. gets stuck on a step “waiting for reboot”… tried it 4 times and left it for an hour each, but didnt move from there… since the phone is on DFU I dont really know how I can do the reboot myself manually…
can someone tell me what I am doing wrong???

D/l started install all was going ok then redsnow stopped working & iphone showing downloading jailbreak data for quite a while. Panicked lol and restored iphone. Is this ment to happen. Please help.
I’ve done the same thing as Ggonmar has done…and several times now and no luck. I have absolutly no idea what I’m doing wrong and so far, no luck. I can get to the “downloading Jailbreak data”, but then it looks as though it either just freezes while the PC program says its complete and the phone turns off after about 30 minutes, or the redsnow program locks up on uploading ramdisk and after about 20 to 30 minutes, the iphone shuts off…so I have no idea whats up here.
4.0.1 did not work for me either. redsno0w did not like the new file. had to go back to 4.0

Dear I hav an iphone3gs. It was 3.1.3 5.12.01. jailbroken and unlocked. While getting some app from cydia,it hanged. And in order to correct the problem,I accidentaly upgraded it to IOS4.Now it hangs on itunes connect screen and if i connect it asks for the official carrier SIM.Kindly help me if anybody can. Jailbroke my 3G yesterday using Redsn0w -5, worked a treat but now it has issues syncing films and tv programmes through itunes – not all of them mind but some, doesn’t seem to be any link as to why it will now sync some but not all of them.
Anybody got any ideas?

I did EVERYTHING exactly as it told me to. Now it’s stuck on “Waiting to reboot”. I am on firmware iOS 4 and I have tried many times. It keeps getting stuck on that screen. @Anon i got noticed that sometimes it takes 3-7 mins to get rebooted. i have already jailbreak and unlocked 13 3g iphones on ISO 4.0.1 with no problem. yes … i got problem with the MMS and finally i found a simple solution for that.
I just jailbroke my iphone, there wasnt any error whatsoever during the process. But I cant seem to unlock my iphone or switch it off where it says “slide to unlock” and “slide to power off”. Can somebody please help…???

I have followed these steps, and have followed the same steps off other peoples YouTube posts etc.
When I open the newest version of RedSnow I get to the part were it begins to jailbreak the iPhone and then it says waiting for reboot, then on my iTunes it says iPhone is on DFU Mode and needs to be restored to use, and RedSnow sticks on waiting for reboot.
Does anyone have any ideas what ive done wrong or what has gone wrong ?

After the Jailbreak, have you unlocked it using Ultrasnow? if not you need wifi and go to cydia and install Ultrasnow from it. Thats all ..

OK it would be helpful if in the instructions when down loading the 4.0 restore IPSW file that you do NOT place it in with the 4.0.1 update file because ^#$@ing iTunes deletes any older files residing now. I had to down load the 4.0 file twice over a very slow DSL connection, Actually takes about 30mins, F#@$ing AT&T U-Verse.

1,2_4.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw. The jailbreaking part worked out ok. But, I found that I don’t have MMS (have not verified ibooks), and i’m running on edge network on tmobile. Not to mention everything is sluggish… anyone else with the same problem?

And for everyone else messin around with restore and dfu mode, in my case, I didn’t have to do either one to get it to work..the bitch was finding the ispw that was recognized by redsn0w.. These phones are really are such a headache cause there made in so many places, that’s why one persons phone does it fine, and others have to spend a week trying to figure it out, even when your using the same god damn program. Luckily, it only took me 2 days…
so i believe i just jb my phone yay! then i ran into another problem….my service provider is Tmobile… i put the sim card and it shows only one bar for signal. i tried to transfer my contacts into my iphone and that didnt work. also tried calling which also didnt work.

so i downloaded diskAid and pasted the two files of ultrasnow 9.3 into
root-> var -> root -> media -> Cydia ->AutoInstall-> than i pasted two files of ultrasnow..
i found a video from youtube… thats how i was able to unlock carrier service without wifi..
but now wifi and data cellular is not working.. please help..

Whatever I do I can’t get past the correct IPSW file -
Initially updated my 3g to 4.01 then tried to do with both pwange and redsnow – both latest versions – then tried to point it at 4.0 ipsw instead –
then tried down grading firmware to 4.0,

whatever I do still get the very annoying error message – can not recognise the ipsw – or wrong bundle etc etc. I have read everything and still don’t seem able to solve this.
Incidentally I used the pwange tool earlier initially before I had 4.01 and it cooked me a custom ipsw and then failed to complete somewhere on itunes – then I have a big guy come up on my iphone screen with a speech bubble in russian??!!
I have access to my phone – it has been unlocked by o2 at source – but I want cydia on it.

@owais, try the latest 0.9.5b5-5. I didn’t have network issues on tmobile. My signals are fine, and i can get wifi. However please know that once you switch to tmobile, you will lose the MMS & 3G.
@Hog, thanks! I re-jailbreaked and found that it was tmobile that diabled MMS.
i take it after updating to 4.01 and using v5 of redsnow there is now a problem with unable to recognize ispw file? i had no previous issues with this jailbreak until going to 4.01

Yes well I didn’t try it before hand –
All I know is that with 4.01 I can’t regognise the PSPW files through redsnow or Pwange.

@reaser – if you updated to 4.01 like i did, you should browse for “iPhone1,2_4.0_*A203_Restore.ipsw”. It worked for me

To resolve this issue, you first need to ensure that your iPhone is using the new updated MMS and internet settings:
Go to Settings, General, Network. Ensure Enable 3g is off, and Data Roaming is on.
Then go to Cellular Data Network.
The Cellular Data Network APN should be set to: epc.tmobile.com
The MMS APN should also be: epc.tmobile.com
The MMSC should be: mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
And the MMS Proxy should be blank.
@reaser: Ooops.. Let me clarify. You have to download “iPhone1,2_4.0_*A293_Restore.ipsw” and have redsn0w program look for that file. The program will not recognize 4.0.1 but will recognize 4.0. it worked for me.

@marko, maybe we have different phones. I used iphone 3G. upgraded to 4.01 from 3.1.3. and used 4.0 ipsw to jailbreak.

@marko- noobie myself. i restored and jailbroke the phone several times now… well, the wifi is not working anymore (detects faint signals when the signal is actually quite strong)
Sorry for those of you having problems. I jailbroke my phone over the weekend. I have an IPhone 3g that was jailbroken before (around 3.1.1 I think), but then restored and upgraded to apple’s 4.0 (not 4.1).
I used redsn0w vs. 5b5-5 (the latest one) downloaded from the DevTeam site, along with the 4.0 ipsw. It went very well. Jailbreak took about 20 minutes total. MMS still works fine, havent tried iBooks yet – because I use the Amazon Kindle app for books instead. No network issues. I even went back and found my old Borg Collective theme and added it. I love my iPhone again.
The only issue I have is trying to install my bluetooth keyboard. The demo for BT Stack Keyboard works, but every time I try to download the full app it won’t load, even over wi-fi.
My wife wants me to jailbreak her iPod touch 1g now. Thanks for all the hard work and explanations.

when i click on the latest redsnow version i get a “Bandwidth limit exceeded” message. how can i remedy this?
@erin – no – I’ve never had issues with wifi. I contacted the BTstack keyboard people. They said their servers were getting hammered. Finally got it installed at 6am EST this morning. Took about ten minutes to get cydia to behave, purchase the software through amazon, and get it loaded and working. Sweet! The keyboard works better than it ever did with my PDA.

The “bandwidth limit” is out of your control. It is the dev team site’s problem. Too many people trying to get stuff from them. Look at it really early/late, or try to find it on another site.
@theosus – thanks. i restored the phone back to 3.1.3 then to 4.0 and then again finally to 4.01 to conclude that the phone i have has a dying wifi module or something. I have a weak wifi and it seems to be a hardware problem.. Thanks for the reply!
What I don’t understand with mine is seems to be a semi-tethered jailbreak.
Jailbreaking and unlocking seemed to go perfectly.. But if I reboot the phone, it must be connected to iTunes to actually boot. Otherwise it will just sit at the apple forever.
I can’t find any evidence of others complaining about this, nor evidence that this is supposed to be a tethered jailbreak, and the tethered jailbreaks usually mean you have to run the jailbreaking software every time – in this case all I have to do is hookitup to a PC with iTunes and bam it boots nicely, don’t have to fire up the jailbreakin gear.
What’s the deal? Somebody call Stephen Stills cuz I wanna know Is this the way it’s supposed to be?
Victim was a 3G, upgraded legally to 4.0, then jailzbroken with redsn0w 95b5.5 and unlocked with ultrasn0w. Again it works perfectly except for the semi-tethering on reboot issue.

I upgraded to legal 4.0.1 then re-jailbrokified with w3jbm and it works MUCH better. phone seems faster / more stable and no half-tethering connect-to-iTunes weirdness on reboot. only thing that doesn’t get mentioned much in stuff I’ve seen is that jailbreakme does NOT automatically turn on wallpapers and multitasking for you.
to fix that you just need to go get zToggle with Cydia afterwards which is AFAICT the easiest way to enable it. took me a few mins to finger it out but once I did it was all good in the hood. i’ve seen a bunch of people trying to finger that one out so hey – if you need multitasking/wallpapers after your jailbreak me – this is the answer. zToggle.
Ok, so I need to upgrade my iPhone 3g to os 4.0 and then do the redsn0w stuff. I’ve got the redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5 for windows. My question is, will it hacktivate my iPhone? Coz i’m not on an official carrier… Again, Will it HACKTIVATE my iPhone? Will it bypass the activation screen? The one where you can only make emergency calls??? Thanx in advance…

Use the http://www.jailbreak.com version then use ultrasn0w and will give you an unlock on top of a good JB.
Works great, much better than redsn0w for me – I dumped the redsn0w JB and re-did with JBM.com and it’s much better and I’m much better.

So i ran redsn0w to upgrade to 4.0 from 3.1.3 on my iPhone 3G. But when it all finishes im still at 3.1.3 and nothing on my iPhone has changed, can anyone help?
Try it again? If that doesn’t work, maybe update to 4.0 first through iTunes first then jailbreak. But make sure the current jailbreak (from RedSn0w) works with the current 4.0 firmware because there’s been at least one firmware update since 4.0′s release.

Laura. Once you open redsn0w, click browse, search for the os 4 file that you downloaded and double-click it once you find it. The file name should be “iPhone1,2_4.0_8A293_Restore” for iPhone 3G. After double-clicking it, redsn0w will show a “Processing firmware” message, followed by a “IPSW successfully identified” message. From there, everything should be easy. Hope I helped…
By the way, this Jailbreak ran so perfectly on my iPhone…

For updating to iOS4 from iTunes, do i have to click on UPDATE button in iTunes or i have to click on RESTORE (shift + Restore) in iTunes. Please advise as i don’t want to loose all my data from iPhone for doing jailbreaking.

You can do it either way, just sync and back up your phone before you do it. The way most sites tell you to do it is just update it through apple first. But for people like me, when i try to update it, it downloads the whole firmware, and at like 99 percent, it says error contacting update or some shit like that. So i just found the latest ipsw off the internet and just did the ol’ shift restore method.

im on 4.0.2 and i can run pirated apps. the only thing is when your in installous and trying to get games or apps or whatever, ive noticed some dont work. What i also found out is if you download a older version of the game, sometimes it works. I had doodlejump before, after rejailbreaking on 4.0.2, i couldnt get the game to work. so i went back into installous and scrolled down to the next oldest version, and there it was, working game again.. Why would the new firmware like the older version of the app? I dont know… may be a new protection thing or something, who knows, but…. it can work.
For the others, you DONT want the multitasking if you have the 3G. Its really slow, so you always have to go back and close apps so it runs ok. Its like shutting down every app twice, it sux. I tried it for a week and its really cool, ONLY if your phone is fast enough to make it worth it, like a 3GS or newer. If you really want it, then keep with the redsn0w, otherwise, just go to jailbreakme.com and the site will do it for you. Whoever created this site deserves a fu%king high five!! Its almost scary that the website alone can jailbreak your phone, so now you can jailbreak it literally anywhere. And folks, if you use jailbreakme.com, you dont have to back your stuff up first, all it does it add cydia to the home screen. All you really need is cydia, you can do almost everything out of there if you know where to look.

Guys, i have jailbroken my iphone 3 G OS4 with ultrasn0, it worked and evrythng seemed ok, but then most of the time when i try to launch an application it takes tooooo long, and sometimes it does not start, and the iphone becam very slow, any suggestions!!!!?????????

help plz. I used redsn0w to jailbreak my iPhone 3g running 4.0 firmware. Everything went smoothly, however, when Redsn0w said it was finished, my iPhone was still frozen on the “downloading jailbreaking software” page. also, now I cannot enter DFU mode at all. I checked and I can’t find Cydia on the iPhone, so I assume the jailbreak did not work. please help!
I also get the “unable to recognize specified IPSW” message. I used Firefox to download both the IPSW and redsn0w. Any suggestions?
