As always when a new firmware is being realeased, there is always a few unlucky people who “accidentally” update or restore to the latest firmware, thus losing their jailbreak and unlock.
In this case, you’d usually want to downgrade your iPhone from 3.1.3 to 3.1.2 simply by downloading 3.1.2 and SHIFT + Restore in iTunes so that you can choose your own firmware to restore to.
The problem is that Apple recently stopped signing all previous firmware versions making it impossible for you to downgrade.
Fortunately, Saurik has been smart enough to create a system to bypass Apple’s signature and making it possible for you to downgrade from 3.1.3 to 3.1.2. To do so, you will need to have your SHSH on file. To see if it’s on file, launch Cydia and look at the top. Mine says “This device has SHSHs on file for iPhone OS: 3.0, 3.1, 3.1.2″.
If you don’t have this, make sure you look for a link that says “Make my life easier” on Cydia. This will allow you to save your SHSHs.
This being said, downgrading an iPhone 3GS from 3.1.3 to 3.1.2 is easier said than done. It’s actually a pretty painful process that I detailed in a tutorial a few month ago. I originally wrote this tutorial to downgrade from iPhone 3.1 to 3.0 but the steps are exactly identical (MuscleNerd confirmed this).
If you’re one of those who need to downgrade your iPhone firmware, then check out my tutorial, or simply wait for the Dev Team to come up with a reliable jailbreak for 3.1.3. Something tells me PwnageTool is not too far ahead of us 
UPDATE: If you have an iPhone 3G, you can now downgrade from baseband 05.12.01 to o4.26.08.

obviously i missed something here because i tried the downgrade and got the 1505 error twice (which seems to be expected) but then my phone stayed in restore mode after disconnecting and trying a hard reboot. at that point do i run redsn0w? i tried blackra1n but then it showed no cell signal. how do i get it to reactivate after this? through itunes? do i have to change the hosts file back to normal?

Go to the official dev-team blog here: http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ – there you’ll see that if you upgraded and your phone got SIM locked, you can’t currently unlock it any way. You have to wait for the hack.
You can downgrade to 3.1.2 with jailbreak but then still can’t unlock.
@vodhanz I believe it stores the SHSH files automatically because on my 3.1.2 3GS Cydia tells me it has these files on record even though I never intentionally saved them. Or maybe I just can’t remember?!
I was jailbreaking my iPhone 3gs 3.1.2 and ended up in upgrading it to 3.1.3 ! Now I don’t have a Cydia installed in my iPhone to downgrade it back to 3.1.2 !! Can anyone help me resolving this issue . Please .

Exactly @ The Fly guy. I don’t understand what the author is talking about. If you’ve upgraded to 3.1.3, you’re not jailbroken anymore. I have a clean install of 3.1.3 and nothing else. I’m screwed. lol

Read the tutorial. If it is what I read several months ago you have to point your iTunes to Cydia’s authentication server (which is why your SHSH’s have to be on file, if not this won’t work) and when you select the older firmware it matches what iTunes would expect and allow you to continue.
So he’s telling folks to open Cydia BEFORE upgrading to check and see if your SHSH is on file. If you didn’t click the “make my life easier” link prior to upgrading to 3.1.3 then it’s too late but I don’t believe there would be any harm in following the tutorial and trying anyway… maybe you did and forgot.
I am downloading the file to downgrade from 3.1.3 to 3.1.2 as I want my jailbreak back. I will let ya know if it works! I have a brand new 3GS 32GB bought last week from the Apple store.

i accidentally upgraded to 3.1.3, and while this tutorial is all well and good, how am i supposed to download anything from cydia when there aren’t any 3.1.3 jailbreaks available? when i upgraded, it deleted all of my jailbreak apps.

You need to right click on notepad.exe and “Run As Administrator”. You should be golden after that.
I do not see why a downgrade from 3.1.3 to 3.1.2 is seeming so difficult !! I did it on my iPhone 3G as below
First of all let me confess that I just joined the iFucked community by upgrading to 3.1.3 using sn0wbreeze. It’s not their fault. When you create a new IPSW, you give some kinda hint as to where it is saved. sn0wbreeze saves the IPSW in the desktop – but I assumed that the same (original) IPSW was erased and jailbroken. There you are … I am well and truly into iFucked.
To downgrade, follow these steps.
1. Use iREB 3.1.2 to start up the phone
2. Use Shift + Restore and select the jailbroken IPSW of 3.1.2
3. If not AppSynced, use Rizwan’s Appsync or manually copy relevant files using DiskAid.
… device will be jailbroken. Sometimes you may have difficulty in syncing the iPhone using iTunes. If this happens, follow step 4
4. Try to downgrade to 3.0.1 using Redsn0w 0.8. Downgradewill fail, but apps can be loaded easily via iTunes.
Checked so far … Cydia, Apps, Music, Contacts, Movies … all working.

@Oz…. yeah I had the same problem. That is because your jailbreak didn’t work well. Go back to iTunes & do a restore. It’ll do a restore to 3.1.3. That is the only way.
Ah, you’ve got a great article there but I’m having problems. Something went wrong with blackra1n so I restored it unaware that I had to update as well. I had no choice so I did! Everything went back to normal. Also I did save the SHSH on rock and cydia so have I got to do all this just to rejaibreaj it?

did i understand everything right to do the downgrade?
first i do the jailbreak with blackra1n and not turn off the device after it (coz that would undo the jb). then i open the now installed cydia and choose the “make my life easier” option to save the SHSH.
After doing that, i follow the tutorial to downgrade and everything would be fine.

Installed iblacklist on my jailbroke 3gs, the app killed my Iphone. Kept rebooting. No fix. had to restore phone and it installed 3.1.3. No way around it.

I had the same problem BUT FIXED IT
After upgrading to 3.1.3 due to an update stuffing things up, I had to downgrade using Cydia’s SHSH keys. Its here that I had the same issue as you where the baseband no longer worked with the firmware. To get around this I did the following:
1) Create a 3.1.3 “jailbroken” ipsw file using snowbreeze.
2) Downgrade to 3.1.2 (using Cydia modified host file)
3) Jailbreak using blackra1n.
4) Upgrade using itunes using the custom ipsw created with snowbreeze
I now have a jailbroken 3.1.3 with the latest baseband. Personally I’m not worried about the unlock as I only with to use it with O2-UK anyway.

hi, my iphone has been working well since i jailbroke it few months ago, but the wifi didnt properly all of a sudden(not able to detect any network). i then reset the internet setting and my iphone shut down after that. i tried to rejailbreak it again since my iphone 3gs was only tethered jailbroken. and then the picture of a guy did appear after i click the “make it rain” button, but it never go beyond that! instead, my iphone went back to recovery mode after stucking for few minutes in the guy’s picture! i have tried several times but got the same result! any help please!!!

Apple loaded 3.1.3 WHICH I DIDN”T WANT and I lost all my winterboard customization. Is there anyway to restore WITHOUT going through APPLE? I don’t mind wiping the HD clean and loading ipsw files because I can restore from my last back-up. I really need help because I can’t use this garbage phone in the factory condition! HOW TO CREATE A CUSTOM (JAILBROKEN) 3.1.3 IPSW FILE
[These steps are intended for those who have downgraded their 3GS to 3.1.2 using Cydia's SHSH, but no longer have any service signal. This worked perfectly fine on my old-bootrom model 3GS, I no not know if it works with the newer bootrom models]

For those who still have problem with no service,I just managed to get my service back by booting with irecovery before jailbraking it again. So iTunes can activate your iPhone before jailbreak hactivates it. Cant believe how happy i am. Finally after a week of misery :-]]]]]].

Use iRecovery to get it out of the “plug into iTunes” loop and then if it’s not jailbroken still, use blackra1n to jailbreak.

How to tell if you have ecid shsh stored by saurik or = If you can restore
After a week of attempts to try downgrading iPhone 3GS from 3.1.3 to 3.1.2 (there was an accident, having been downloaded from Cydia my WiFi stopped working, tried to reset the network settings and it got stuck in the boot without coming anywhere , panicked and updated in the belief that I could jailbreak yet anyway) so I’ve come to the following:
If you do not have your ECID SHSH of Cydia = If you did not press “Make My Life Easier” button when it was on Cydia front, you can not recover because your SHSH is not saved. But even if you press the button so there is still a risk that it is not stored. :O
I tried long and hard to restore to 3.1.2 by changing the host file for all the combinations available, but every time I got the message “This device isn’t eligable for the requested build.” I feared that my ECID SHSH was not saved, even though I was convinced that I pressed on Make My Life Easier.
I decided to make my self sure
HOW IT to see if YOUR SHSH is stored:
1. Download the program from http://thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com/- Click on the Quick Download
2nd Download usbview from
http://www.ftdichip.com/Resources/Utilities.htm – Scroll down to “usbview is available for download as a. Zip file by clicking here.” Press the “here” to download.
3rd Open up the Umbrella from the folder you extracted from the zip file, open up umbrella.exe if you have 32-bit Java or umbrella64.exe if you run 64-bit JAVA. If you do not know, try both, one of them will work.
4th Change the “Device Version” to what you want to restore to, in this case, your iPhone / iPod touch model, and then 3.1.2.
5th On shsh repository select “Sauriks server”.
6th Now you want to get hold of your Ecid. Put your iPhone in restore mode, then open up usbview. Press the options and check “Config Descriptors” and “Location ID’s” Press F5 to refresh. Scroll down to the Apple Mobile Device … or something like that and press it. In the box to the right, a bunch of text to appear.
7.Find where it says serial number, keep scrolling to the right until it will say ECID: 00000429349213492 or similar. copy all the numbers.
8. Click up Umbrella again and paste the numbers you copied from usbview.
9. Press Submit
10th So, now the program will load. What it does is it looks for your SHSH on Saurik (Cydia) If it there it loads it home to your computer. This means that you can restore to 3.1.2 without any problems. However, if it says “couldnt find SHSH for the model and so on.” then you have not saved your SHSH at Saurik and can not restore to 3.1.2.
I have the misfortune of not having my SHSH saved at Saurik, so I have to unfortunately wait until there comes a method for jailbreaking 3.1.3.
This will probably save a lot of time for you.

A simple way to downgrade without shshs. follow steps:-
1. Open itunes and Click on restore with Holding shift and choose 3.1.2 firmware
2. It will STUCK on preparing for restore, don’t lose temper
3. Close itunes by opening task manager ( by holding ctrl + alt + delete) and end the itunes program,
4. now at this point you can see your iphone with A Deadly black screen
5. Open up itunes and Again choose Restore and 3.1.2 firmware
6. Itunes Extract and Update it automatically
7. Dance
or simply on 3.1.3 go to ERASE DATA AND RESET ALL SETTINGS, in settings
and restore to 3.1.2

After Jailbreaking and unlocking my iphone 3G (3.1.2) using blackra1n, I deleted it the blackra1n icon from my phone. All went fine. I realized later that I missed installing Cydia on my phone. Now I tried rejailbreaking using blackra1n n number of times, but the blackra1n icon just doesn’t show up on my phone. How can I get Cydia ? I do not want to restore since it pushes me to a 3.1.3 version. When I tried using shift+restore, it actually opened a browse window and prompted me to select an ipsw, I dint have any … Help…how can I get Cydia ?
This downgrade wouldn’t work for an iphone 3gs running 3.1.3 (7e18) model: MC135LL baseband 05.12.01 that has never been jailbroken prior and does not have Cydia installed on it? There is currently no method by which to jailbreak under these conditions? Am I forever doomed because I upgraded to 3.1.3 and got on board late to jailbreak?

you are correct. There is no way for you to jailbreak at this point. And they are not gonna release the jailbreak. You’re just gonna have to wait for the next big firmware release.

Just wondering if I am messed up regarding my iphone. I have a 2g 2.2 unlocked/jailbroken with quickpawn about 1 year ago. Tonight I went into the Mibbit IRC chat room, in there someone said to upgrade using Itunes to 3.1.3 then use redsn0w. and it seems like that is not correct.. I have Tmobile so when my sim card is in Itunes says can not ativate. And on my phone it is in a different language and I can only make an emergency call.

@PhDizzle… I had this problem yesterday. I have a 2G 2.2 unlocked/jailbroken and upgraded to 3.1.3 on itunes. Plus I have Tmobile. So I couldn’t get into Itunes and my phone was in another language where I could only make a 911 call. This is what I had to do for my 2g phone. I don’t know if it works for 3g or not….
1. If you can’t get into Itunes. You can go to this page and do one of the methods: DFU mode

2. To be able to restore. You can download this on your desktop:

3. Connect your phone and then in itunes hit the “shift key/click restore” then browse to the .ipsw you just downloaded on your desktop and select it.
Follow the instructions on the screen. Just click add “cydia”. then go to the different prompts and you should be set.
Remember this is for 2g iphone. I think the DFU mode will work for all the generations.

I mistakenly upgraded to 3.1.3 and found a way to downgrade to 3.1.2 easily on an iPhone 3G with baseband 05.12.01. Jailbroke it again with ease using Blackra1n. (I dont unlock so I don’t know if this is possible)
Shift restore in itunes to 3.1.2 – It will fail. Your iPhone will go into recovery mode with the itunes logo and usb cord pictures.
Download iRecovery (for windows or Mac – google it) use this software to take the phone out of recovery mode. When it reboots – > 3.1.2

I got a new iPhone 4 weeks ago and connected it to iTunes. It made a back up but then I mistaken updated to 3.1.3
I now cannot find the original back up file which was 3.1.2 but if I could would I be able to jailbreak my iPhone

Can I restore my phone in itunes with the 3.1.2 firmware? Im sure I pushed the “make my life easier”-button in cydia. I need jailbreak and unlock. Can i restore it with 3.1.2 and then jailbreak again as usual? And HOW do I do this?
The APPLE and all the fucking iPhone OSs are such a pain in the ass, they always kill the spirit of a developer. Now, should I concentrate on my coding or grading up the iPhone OSs. Every three months they come up with some stupid idea that is incompatible with all the ideas they ever had.

its 3.1.3 on 5.12.01
it wont sync with itunes,
when i switch it on it comes up with the connect to itunes logo and lets me go to make an emergency call only.
it will go into recovery mode.
itunes does see it but wont show me whats on it.
can i currently do anything with it?
even if i can just use it as an ipod i will be happy
is there any software that will reconfigure it without itunes?
or can i downgrade it with redsnow in its current state?

hey did you registered it with iTunes, you first of all need a SIM card to activate it, and that too of a supported provider.
You need to check out with the dealer who sold it to you.

This one is for the wife. anyway put in my sim card an it tells me i need to register the phonne w/ at&t . It ask for number, zip and last four s.s . an then it says need to pick a plan. Is their an way around this or do i need to call att to get a password or something…

I was able to successfully jailbreak my phone that was previously updated to 3.1.3. After hours of trying blackrain and snow. I installed a 3.1.2 firmware version with an 10.15 error. Installed blackrain after ignoring the error and noticed everything worked but my att wireless signal. Clicked the blackrain icon on the phone and installed cydia to help ensure the phone was unlocked then I used Snowbreeze to upgrade the firmware to 3.1.3 and viola everything worked including my Att wireless signal. Hope this helps those of you who are using 3.1.3 and want to jailbreak your phone. You can’t jailbreak your 3.1.3 unless it has been broken in 3.1.2…very important.
I tried to downgrade to 3.1.2 but it didn’t work and now the phone is stuck in DFU mode – I can’t get to it to turn on anything.
Does anyone haveany suggestions as to how to get it out of this mode?

i got an itouch 3g and i have looked at every website tryed everything and nothing works first of all i need to downgrade and when i try it says the file isnt supported and ive downloaded the 3.1.2 firmware 3 times and none of them are supported i guess and then there zip files i cant make work even after putting .ipsw

For those who have an apple product like iPhone3GS, iPhone 3G, Ipod touch, Ipad. There is a simple way to downgrade any firmware on your phone/ipod. All you do is go to apple.com go to iphone and download there SDK development software for 3.0 or something 3.1 whatever it is its the iphone SDK then run the simulation and Xcode as you have your iphone plugged in then downgrade the firmware that way. fucking noobs.

I had my shsh saved on Cydia. I just successfully downgraded my 3gs 3.1.3 on 5.12.01 (Old Bootrom) Its now 3.1.2 and obviously the baseband is still 5.12.01. I can jailbreak it with Blackra1n, I have full reception & I can make phone calls fine. The ‘3G’ logo is on the top bar yet I cant get the internet other than Wi-Fi. Is this supposed to be the end result or am I missing something. Is there something on Cydia that can rectify this.

Thanks littledaemon, but re-installing and trying a few other things, the thing that worked was to simply Reset Network Settings.
I think I synced with itunes after the jailbreak and that gave me my old and incorrect network settings or something.
Finally, I have a Cydia on a 3gs downgrade with a 5.12.01 bootrom.

For whatever reason you want to downgrade iPhone firmware, follow the instruction from this guy here http://www.iphonedownloadblog.com/2009/09/15/downgrade-iphone-31-to-30/. Even though this guy is made for downgrading from iphone 3.1 to 3.0, it doesn’t matter. At the step where they asked you to select the firmware, just use the firmware for 3.1 or 3.0 or whatever firmware you want. Have fun.

Only the 3Gs needs the SHSH to be stored on file
I downgraded my iPhone 3G by restoring it with iTunes from 3.1.3 to 3.1.2 on Windows. Shift & click restore. Select 3.1.2 and restore. You should get the 1015 error. This is easy to fix. Your iPhone should be at the emergency call screen. Go to google and google blackra1n and go to blackra1n.com. Save the file to your desktop. Now google blackbreeze. Go to redmondpie.com and look for the link to download. Save it to your desktop and use blackbreeze on blackra1n. Connect your iPhone and run blackra1n. This will activate your phone.
If you only need to jailbreak, use Spirit. That is easy and fast.
To use spirit, your phone must be activated.

I’m not really sure you can do anything to fix current location. Make sure it is not restricted or off. If it is neither of these, it could be a hardware problem with the gps chip in your phone or the firmware is messed up. If possible, just restore to 3.1.3 or 3.1.2 and jailbreak with spirit or blackra1n.

Your ssh is in sync with the serial number of your phone. So you can’t use it on a different phone beacuse the serial number is different.

Okay, I have followed the downgrade guide. 3.1.2 firmware. Installed twice. got error message. launched redsn0w 9.3. pointed to 3.1.2 firmware. ran, installed and then boot image only.
