16 Reasons the iPad Sucks

by Sebastien on January 29th, 2010

The iPad sucks! That’s what I said to myself after watching Steve Jobs reveal what was said to be the most important device of his career. I felt let down! I expected so much more from this tablet. Maybe I expected too much from it. The iPhone has set the bar so high that we are now used to being amazed and surprised by Apple. This announcement sure was a reality check!

The general opinion about the iPad is not as good as good as Apple probably expected. I ran a poll yesterday on the blog (take it if you haven’t yet). The majority of you was pretty disappointed and didn’t even think they would buy an iPad when it’s for sale in a couple months.

There is no shortage of reasons why the iPad sucks. Let’s go over some of them here.

The name sucks! The first thing my fiancee told me about the iPad? “Honey, I think I’m getting my iPeriod, do you have an iPad for me?” It doesn’t take a marketing genius to figure out that the iPad is a terrible name for a product. I plan to write a blog post about the worst jokes ever about the iPad so if you have some funny ones, please email them to me.

The network sucks! While I personally don’t have any problem with AT&T, most people don’t agree with me, so I guess it’s fair to say that sticking with AT&T was not the right decision for Apple. They could have gone with T-Mobile, or Verizon (even though I think the iPad or iPhone will never ever go to Verizon) and everybody would be happy. Apple is not a company that aims at making people happy though. It aims at making Steve happy!

No Flash! Alex of Applicious says it all: No Flash on the iPhone was barely tolerable. On a device that you call Internet-specific to not have Flash is more than annoying, it’s insulting. Flash, love it or hate it, is one huge slice of the Internet. This is not optional.

No multitasking! During his presentation of the iPad, Steve Jobs called netbook cheap laptops. Guess what Steve, I might have a “cheap laptop” but I’m currently typing this post on it with 2 Firefox windows opened, TweetDeck, a Word Document and Flickr Uploader running at the same time. Can your iPad do that? Netbooks are fulfilling a need. The iPad is not. It’s just struggling to create a one. Not having multitasking on the iPad really sucks.

No camera! If you’re going to create a mobile device for Mom and Pops, you’d better give it at least a front facing camera because Mom sure loves to Skype her daughter. I didn’t expect a back-facing camera on the iPad, but I sure hoped for a front-facing one.

It’s big! Of course it’s big, it’s the purpose of it. Still, I’m confused. Does Apple have to license plus-size pockets as an official iPad accessory?

It’s heavy! At 1.5 Lbs, I don’t think you’re gonna be able to hold this baby for 2 hours without developing a tendinitis.

No Video Output! If you thought about plugging your iPad in your TV to watch a slideshow of your latest vacation’s pictures, then think again because it’s not going to happen.

It’s not pretty! Let’s be honest for a minute, the big fat bezel around the touchscreen is ugly.

The keyboard sucks! I didn’t expect the iPad to have a physical keyboard but that won’t prevent me from complaining about it. I hate typing on my iPhone and something tells me I’ll hate typing on the iPad even more because it simply isn’t convenient. When I type on a keyboard, I like to have the screen facing me, not laying down flat because it is unpractical and in the long run, it will most likely cause pain in the neck and back (I’m serious).

No USB port! Did you want to plug your digital camera into your iPad to download your pictures. Too bad. Oh wait, you’ll actually be able to if you buy the $30 adapter Apple will be selling. That is mafia-style racketing.

No 16:9! Watching movies on the iPad is going to suck as it will render the movies in 4:3 aspect ratio with big black bars around it.

No Widgets! Ok, the iPad screen is huge but it actually feels empty. Why don’t we have widgets on this thing? Sticky notes, calculator, whatever widget?

The battery sucks! I don’t believe Apple when they say the iPad has a battery life of 10 hours. They were praising the iPhone 3GS battery. I still can’t get through the day without plugging mine in. Play NFS on your iPad for one hour, do a little bit of web browsing for 2 hours, and I bet you your battery will be dead before you can update your Facebook status.

The storage limitation sucks! Starting at 16GB, this is a complete joke. If you want me to store my music, videos and photos on your iPad (all this in top of my applications), I’m going to need MUCH more space than the 64GB limit.

Reading books on the iPad sucks! The Kindle might not be dead yet after all. I dare you to read a book on your iPad for more than 2 hours. By that time, your eyes will be crying, you’ll most likely have a headache and feel tired. That’s what computer screen do to you. I’m not a big fan of ebooks (I like the smell and feel of books – call me old school) but I do believe the e-ink feature of the Kindle is much better than what we’ll get on the iPad.

What do you think? Do you think Apple underdelivered with the iPad? Please share your thoughts in the comment section.

  1. I agree on everything u said but the marketing. I thingthey took a page from nintendo and went for a name that would provide them with free advertising

  2. Hi…I hope people at Apple are reading this blog…its blogs likes this that actually help a product designed improve over time..well I would like to say..letz give it some time and see.

    Regards,
    Deepak

  3. I stopped reading after you couldn’t spell the word “career”. Way to go buddy….your a top journalist now. Almost made it past the first sentence.

    • If you are trying to make a point about correcting somebody’s spelling, make sure you aren’t a complete and utter idiot, Bob Arkus.

For one, you are intentionally being a douche on the internet. That is your first problem, in this situation. What are you trying to accomplish? Is it that you want to provide constructive criticism? No, that can’t be, as there was nothing at all constructive about it. In fact, it was quite obnoxious and elitist, and doesn’t really reflect well on your character. However, it was more likely that you wanted to feel like you are better than the author of this article. To your misfortune, however, you negated all of what little argument you had when you misspelled “you’re.”

James is only being a bit of a huge douchebag with his assumption that just because the author doesn’t like this product, he is an Apple fanboy. It makes very little sense, and his logic is clearly flawed, but at least he isn’t being completely in-your-face with his elitist comments.

Then there is ben19. This guy should’ve learned from his retarded half-monkey brother/father Bob Arkus, and checked his own poor grammar before he made a stupid comment like he did, which was exactly, “Please do us a favor and take some English class before you start writing a blog.”

Then we have kirk. “These I hate the ipad are stupid and narrow-minded but they are attention grabbers.” It seems that this statement tries to make a point, but trips at the beginning, rendering whatever poorly explainedmessage that was trying to be said useless. One of your arguments was that the iPad DOES have a camera option. The point the author was trying to make was that no model currently has one built in,which is true. Also, if you can read for two hours on your phone, then good for you. However, it does not say in the article that it will be worse on the iPad than the iPhone, as you said.

Amani77, there already IS an iPad the size of the iPhone. It’s called the iPod Touch.

And for the rest of the haters, it’s a blog written in English by a French guy. Let’s be honest- his English is probably better than yours.

And as for my own opinion, I think the iPad is too overpriced. For the same amount of money, I could get a cheap netbook that does more stuff, and I wouldn’t even need to jailbreak it. However, should somebody give me one as a gift, I wouldn’t turn it down.

    • I think you probably mean’t to say “you are a top journalist now” or even “you’re a top journalist now”. Way to go buddy.

  4. Spot on.

I have an iPhone and whereas I have a lot of problems with it, I stand by it being a great phone. The battery life is a limitation with smartphones at the minute (small form factor and so on) so I can kind of excuse that. 16GB is just enough for a phone that doubles as an iPod in my opinion and the touch screen is slick and pleasant to use. Even the layout is typical of Apple’s “even a child could use it” (an old Apple Macintosh was the first computer I used way back when I was in primary school and knew about as much about computers as I did neuro science), and that’s nice after a few beers.

The conversation that spawned the iPad:

    “So you know the iPhone?”
    “Yeah, what of it?”
“You know how people are complaining about the small resolution?”
    “My god, I think you’re onto something…”
“Imagine if we taped four iPhones together!”

And thus the iPad was spawned.

  5. I do agree with some of your points, such as multitasking, storage, camera, output, and NO USB.
This thing WILL sell. I’m sure of it.
It won’t be as good as a regular computer, but it will be a upgrade from just a iPod touch or iPhone.
    I’m a Windows guy btw. :D

  6. @Bob Arkus: I stopped reading when you confused “your” for “you’re”.

  7. @Bob Arkus

    It’s “you’re” not “your”.

If YOU’RE going to point out grammatical errors, at least get YOURS right.

    Comment Troll.

  8. #17. No SD-slot to get your photos across to iPhoto.
This is a content-consuming device. Point taken. Will not get one.

  9. Overdramatic much? There seems to be no middle ground with Apple fanboys. It’s either all good or it sucks.

Was the original iPhone reveloutionary compared with what we have now? I owned it, and without jailbreaking, it was a pain in the ass with too little storage capacity and limited usefulness. The web browsing was awesome, but the rest was frustrating. Sound familiar? The original 2G doesn’t hold a candle to the 3GS with more AM, more memory, more processor, and of course, the App Store. Just give the Apple (and the jailbreaking community who I’m sure will push it to limits Apple never imagined) time, and you will see a lot more here than you do right now. If the processor and the battery are close to as good as people say, then we could see some really cool stuff here in a year or two.

  10. Please do us a favor and take some English class before you start writing a blog

  11. overdramtic and uninformed. It does have video out and it does have the option for a camera. If i can read a a book on my iphone for 2 hours, then why is it gonna be worse on the ipad? These I hate the ipad are stupid and narrow-minded but they are attention grabbers. This is really just to get more hits on your site.

  12. Damn, that’s the second time in 2 days I get trashed for my bad English. The “career” one is real bad so no excuse for this.

It’s high time I put a disclaimer on all of my articles saying “warning: this post was written by a French-speaking man. If you can’t take bad English, please read at your own risks”.

    Oh well….

    • Don’t fret it Sebastien, it’s the content that counts not the presentation. The problem being most Apple types are all about presentation and not content – so they engaged with your grammar but not your argument. I thought it was a good post.

  13. No iPad for me. I can find no use for it and I totally agree with everything you said.

I have a iPhone, laptop, desktop, Kindle and a ITouch. Now tell me again just how the iPad can help me? It’s just a gadget that duplicates every device you already have. Wow!

IPad – What your iPhone would look like if you used a magnifying glass.

No way I will spend $500 for an enlarged version of the iPhone.

No innovation, nothing new….Apple suddenly running out of ideas??

  14. I disagree.. iPads aren’t supposed to be doing everything.. And for its price, you’re sure getting much more than what a kindle would give you.. even though it’s a little more expensive, the cheapest iPad gives you so much more than the Kindle DX would.. And how much? $10 more?

    That’s almost nothing..

I honestly don’t mind carrying this device with me when I’m at Starbucks or anywhere else to chill and read something.. Way lighter than a laptop and so cooler than reading on an iphone or a kindle..

e-ink issue you pointed out.. When don’t I look at screens through out the day..? I’m working, reading, writing, playing video, social networking, and listening to music most of my day in front of my computer screen.. No problem here..

    This is just my opinion..

    Thanks

  15. Hey give the author a break! How many of us English speakers could write error-free French?

Plus this guy is spot on!!!

    Ipad sucks.

  16. Fernando McClellan says: January 29, 2010 at 8:59 am

Well spoken! The iPad is rather L.A.M.E

  17. Ok, the iPad sucks because “its big”? So you would like one in maybe, iPhone sized right? Gimme a break. If you don’t like the device, fine, don’t buy it. Just don’t go around b*tch*ng about nonsense .

  18. Thanks @Thump @ThisGuy for pointing the troll’s grammatical error.

    Thanks @Tom for your understanding.

@Kirk Of course this post was written to drive traffic to my site. Don’t you go to work to make money?

I don’t know how to feel when people call me a journalist or expect NY Times writing style quality. Hey haters, it’s a blog. It’s me talking to you. I’m competing for the Pullitzer Prize!

  19. The biggest stake to the heart of the Isuck is the following:

    NO USB, not enough I/O
    Multi-tasking (cardinal sin)

I want to open up any old pdf, word docs, powerpoint files.. whatever
on a mobile device. I don’t want to dock everytime to transfer files.

If I can’t get data in and out of the Isuck easily then it is useless.

And the 10 hours battery life is a joke.. these claims are silly..
4.5 hours tops depending on the type of activity!

  20. Sir..

I don’t mind your opinion that the iPad sucks.. It’s your blog and you have the right to say WHATEVER..!!

I just don’t agree.. I believe that’s one of my rights too, right..?!!

This particular comment shouldn’t only go to the author, I believe all of the people who’ve commented, as well, should think about what’s being said here..

    Thank You..

  21. Mr. John,

USB: I don’t really need it.. Everything’s web today..

MultiTasking: I’m more productive when I focus on one or two tasks at most..

Docs in general [Including PDF]: What’s wrong with Google Docs.. Save as anything, Upload, Download, Edit, And sync..!! No problem at all..

    10 hour battery:
Really.. My 3 hour mac battery is really 3 hour of work.. And it’s my second year with my mac..

Some things I just don’t need in certain states of my day, if I really do need one of the things this post mentioned.. I’ll just get them on my laptop..

It’s an iPad.. Not an iPillow..

  22. @Anmar Of course you may say whatever you want here. I do not moderate comments unless they are very offensive or insulting.

I enjoy reading everyone’s comment, especially when they challenge my own point of view.

By the way, I am getting an iPad! The point of the article is not to say “don’t buy an iPad”. The point is to highlight what Apple could have done
to make this a killer device.

  23. Just a few questions to the posters who vote “yeah” on the iPad

    1) What’s so innovative about it?

    2) Why does it look like an iTouch on steroids?

    3) Why would you want to become another ATT customer or do you simply don’t know anything about their borderline service?

    4) Why would you watch HDD on a screen that doesn’t have 16:9 aspect ratio?

i’ll take my answers off the air.

  24. Before the ipad, ipod, and iphone Apple showed with it’s music store that sharing copies of one’s itunes with friends would be prohibited. Having come from the generation in which we could give each other copies of taped music or taped movies, I feel as though this company caters to that part of my generation that no longer cares about sharing ” I know we cant really share, (takes an annoying workaround), but It’s just so easy and quick to get my music from them”. My friends aren’t rich but would rather download from apple then fuck around with rapidshare. And for those that are rich then go ahead and pay for all your books, mags, movies, and music from the apple middleman and dont worry about sharing – all your elitist freinds will be able to afford to rebuy the same exact $10,000 collection of media that you already own.

  25. Forgot about apps – you’ll have to pay for all those too.

  26. I’m actually starting to like the iPad. I’m more interested in what it can do once it’s jail broken than what it can do as Apple ships it. My iPhone 3GS isn’t very useful stock, but once I jb’d it and customized it how I wanted, it became the coolest piece of tech I’ve ever owned. I think the iPad will eventually do just as well as the iPhone. We already know you can add a keyboard. Maybe there will be camera accessories. That would be sweet.

As for spelling/grammar, who cares? I come for the content and think you’re blog is great. Keep up the good work!

  27. As far as the expensive comments go, I think the price is good. Compare it to the Touch or an unsubsidized iPhone, and it is perfectly reasonable considering the size of the screen.

As for the bezel, how much fun would it be trying to hold a device and screwing up what you’re doing by accidentally touching the screen all the time? You get around this on the iPhone by holding it by the edges, but you can’t do that with a 10″ display. You have to have some way to hold it steady.

Storage is a valid concern. Apps and services like Simplify, that stream iTunes content from a computer can help with this, though.

The video was a legitimate slip up on Apple’s part. I guess they were more concerned with browsing and ebooks, but video and tv are a better market, especially with YouTube, and iTunes built in.

I do think Apple did itself a disservice by not giving a preview announcement of iPhone OS 4 and multi-tasking support, which most analysts agree will be included. That would have put the iPad in a more positive light. Even if Apple doesn’t do it, though, it will be there. Just like with the iPhone, the jailbreak community will show everyone what the device is capable of, and then Apple will eventually put all of it in the OS. Still waiting on multi-tasking, though.

Remember, the new iPhone OS will get previewed well in advance of its release for beta testing. This should be right around the same time as the launch of the iPad in late March. Don’t be surprised if there are announcements about coming features, at least in the OS, before the device even hits the shelves. Like I said, this is a mistake because it allows for all the negative press, but it is how Apple does things.

Everybody just take a step back and look down the road a few miles.

  28. “Just a few questions to the posters who vote “yeah” on the iPad

    2) Why does it look like an iTouch on steroids?

    3) Why would you want to become another ATT customer or do you simply don’t know anything about their borderline service?

    4) Why would you watch HDD on a screen that doesn’t have 16:9 aspect ratio?

    1. It’s not, really. Despite what Apple says, it’s not magical. It’s just a big Touch with a bigger battery, bigger screen, and more app flexability. That’s not necessarily bad, though. How many companies have tried to release similar devices to the mass market for email and browsing and failed miserably? Nokia and Sony come to mind. Apple will destroy all of them and the Kindle pretty quickly, even though the iPad doesn’t really innovate beyond existing devices.

    2. Branding. Good or not, that is more important than anything with Apple.

    3. ATT is actually really good where I live, but I understand the concern from those in areas where it is not. I am just planning on the WiFi version if I get one. I can tether it to my iPhone with MiFi running on my jailbroken iPhone 3GS.

    4. I don’t know. This one was a stupid trade off for Apple.

  29. @Sebastien: No problem. A typo is a typo is a typo and personally I find your grammar and spelling to be better than most fluent English users. Keep up the good work, you’ve got a great thing going on here.

@The Poor: You’re right. Since getting my iPhone I’d much sooner pay for an app for simplicity rather than do the workaround to use Rapidshare (why do people still use that site? The reward scheme?) however I’m definitely a “try before you buy” kind of person, so I’m more than happy to spend the time downloading then immediately going out and blowing my hard earned cash away. And yes – my iPhone is happily jailbroken, even if it is for the things the phone should immediately come with (SMS delivery reports, bluetooth, custom themes, quality third party apps and my biggest gripe; my own music as a ringtone. I’m not buying something I’ve already bought to use as a ringtone, Apple – stop kidding yourselves).

The AT&T thing is a definite let down given their reputation, but the iPad is unlocked on GSM networks which is definitely a step in the right direction for them as well as many companies now offering SIM only deals. This is still one hell of a let down because you’re still going to be paying out of your rear end just to own the entry level iPad unless you want to go with AT&T (or at least this is my understanding, correct me if I’m wrong). It really is an ugly design and doesn’t leave much hope for the new iPhone/Touch models (assuming they’re even going to be continued). The concept of backwards compatibility with apps should be a no brainer and certainly shouldn’t be used as a selling point – it’s a system running a slightly altered version of the iPhone’s OS, of course it should be backwards compatible!

Overall, I’m struggling to see the point of it at all. I mean, sure it’s a nice idea having a tablet that has the functionality of the iDevices, but it bothers me that it’s size is going to get in the way. I mean, it’s large whereas most of the apps for the iDevices were made to be used on a phone or iPod… when you’re on the go. Could you imagine standing at a bus stop and whipping out that bad boy? Nice idea, but I see it as fairly impractical.

Yeah, I’m let down by this release in case you still haven’t figured it out!

  30. Sure thing Sebastien..

    I understand..

  31. Off topic but has anybody seen the Microsoft Courier?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmIgNfp-MdI

Don’t get me wrong, I have very little use for it, but it certainly looks like it will be more useful (at least until the Jailbreak community get hold of it and do some interesting things – something I’m definitely excited about).

By the way, didn’t Jobs say something about the iPad being used as a wacom tablet of sorts? Wouldn’t that mean that it actually has a weight sensitive screen too?

  32. Jared Briggs says: January 29, 2010 at 10:33 am

The Iphone sucked first generation too, but it started a market and with each year, it got monumetnally better. I assume the same will be true here. Most of the problems you have i assumer will be adressed by the second gen. With that said, if they don’t do those things by second gen, then I completely agree with your article. I just wanna give them some time before I label it a success or failure. Afterall, I heard lots of analysts say that the Iphone was a gimmicky device that would never thrive and we saw what happened there.

  33. anyone think it will be able to be “jailbroken” like the iphones?

  34. If Apple doesn’t innovate like they have with the iPhone, the iPad will turn into the next AppleTV. It won’t be that bad, but it will become the iPhone’s red headed cousin.

If it runs a variant of iPhone OS, it will probably have a jailbreak the day it is released.

  35. Yeah i totally agree, the ipad sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!! keep spreading the word, let the general population know the truth, instead of the lies apple is preppin’ to tell everyone about its new and majikal device!

  36. I agree with most of your points but:

    1. It does have video output, otherwise how did they show the onscreen demo suing the keynote? “Support for 1024 by 768 pixels with Dock Connector to VGA Adapter; 576p and 480p with Apple Component AV Cable; 576i and 480i with Apple Composite Cable”

    2. You can’t judge the battery life until you have tried, which also goes for how heavy it feels or how good it is a a reader.

  37. *during the keynote
*good it is as a reader

he he. Make sure you proof-read when typing with the iPhone.

  38. the ipad was a huge let down, so imagine what apple has in stakes for the new iphone…ANOTHER LET DOWN!

  39. No flash? That means I can’t visit most of my favorite sites. Steve Jobs is a greedy prick. He should be working on an ILIVER before he dies. Even if he invented one, it probbaly would only work on lanky white men with turtlenecks.

  40. Bonjour! You are right, the ipad sucks! Apple
Needs to get away from “i” everything.
Did I mention the ipad really sucks!
This is very expensive digital picture frame made
    For 4-6 year olds.
And for the trolls… If you ever get away from your
Computers and games… You actually might travel…
And you would know the difference when someone is
    Writing in their second language.

    Keep up the good work!
    Au Revoir – Trolls!

  41. i hate flash. i really do, i wish it would go away….

but love it or hate it, if you use the internet you are gonna stumble across flash. Everyone that thinks the ipad doesn’t need flash should go uninstall it from any computers they use regularly. wait for it. yep thats your wife screaming you broke her computer and she cant get to farmville or do whatever stupid web activity that requires flash. I mean the ipad is for kids, mom, the wife, people that are playing not working. Flash is nothing to lose if you use your device for just work. no flash for the kids? are you kidding me? seriously? ‘sorry, apple doesn’t like playhouse disney jane’

no multitasking? in 2010? I suppose on a phone thats ok. On a web tablet? seriously? no really, SERIOUSLY? you can have two windows open side by side? what kind of lunacy is this? cant have a reference page and a work page open at same time? cant view strategy guide while playing game? i dont get it. this is crazy. ‘but you have to scroll blah blah whine’ – better than no choice at all.

no ports of any kind – video, usb, sd? apple dropped the ball on this. as an handheld and laptop user since palm III and p75 laptop days i can tell you that docks are lame and bulky. doesn’t matter how cool and slick your device is if you have to plug it into some ugly clunky dock to do anything.

AT&T again? what else do i need to say.

4:3? really? can you even buy 4:3 monitors or tv’s these days?

apple wants to control your entire experience. apple never trusted you. for the longest time they didn’t trust you with two mouse buttons. rather than expecting users to evolve and meet technology half way apple is happy to lower expectations and usefulness to the lowest common denominator. in the process they want to extract as much money from you as possible via their very controlled software distribution system.

i cant wait for msi harmony or hp slate. windows / linux / android – anything is better than controlling and restrictive apple. until then I’m gonna hold onto my awesome msi wind u120h.

msi doesn’t care what i run on my netbook. it is plenty fast, i get the whole internet. I have plenty of room. I have 3g not tied to at&t. i have 16:9 screen. i have bluetooth. i have 6 cell battery. i have a keyboard. i have a webcam. it cost me $329. I dont have to buy all of my software and media from apple app store or itunes.

i predict the apple ipad will get crushed by its more grounded and flexible competitors. thank you apple for the one thing you did do – set a $500 price point.

  42. in addition the bottom is curved, so it sucks using it on a table…why didn’t they make it FLAT ?

  43. Your are right or wrong about everything you said in this article, but lets not judge the book but it’s cover.

  44. I agree. I would like to add the the Kindle and Barnes & Nobles nook both provide 3G coverage for free. No additional data plan from AT&T is required.

  45. Boy – Apple is sure getting bitch slapped around here!

Even though I am a bit disappointed in the total package I will also be getting an iPad. In fact I am excited at the prospect. I can really only find a couple of things disappointing. It’s a bit more square than I expected. Oddly so I think. Doesn’t feel as natural proportioned as the iPhone for example.

And of course the lack of flash just sucks. Does Stevie like browsing a broken web? Maybe he’s “blind” to the broken flash icon. But – honestly – I thought it was really tacky to have that broken icon show up while demoing the iPad. I’m a graphic designer and I would just freak if I was presenting a demo/presentation and something like that happened. That’s why I go over any demo a million times to make sure – if anything is wrong – I can avoid it. Maybe his assistants missed that?

I do have a netbook and realize that the iPad is a bit limited a this time. But I think once its starts getting updates and we start playing with new and imaginative apps its gonna just blow everything else away.

  46. even though i agree with everything you said I am still getting one, cause I like new/cool gadgets and like other people mentioned I am sure it would be much better after jailbreaking.
The 64 GB limit is the worst, if they can have an 160 GB ipod why cant they have a 100 GB ipad??? and why apple is so cheap on USB? even the laptops have only 2. I mean come on its not like each usb cost 100$.

ps: who the hell cares about spelling, first of all this guy is a non-english speaking person writing a “BLOG” for other people to read and share his opinions if you dont like his opinion or style of writing dont come to his blog.

  47. I totally agreed on the e-ink comment. But for casual readers, ipad should be fine.

  48. Unless I’m missing something, I pretty sure they used a flash type memory for the storage space instead of HDD. Reminds me of SSD version of netbook which did not take off well as compares to HDD due to it’s limited space. But there’s certain advantages over HDD.

  49. This is sort of a bad article.
Half of what you complained about are just guesses since you haven’t even used it yet (“the battery sucks! ….well, I think it will.”)

and this isn’t meant to be hauled around in your pocket like an iPhone, hello, it’s a tablet.

  50. And yet you are totally wrong. I heard the same rubbish about battery life Flash copy and paste Edge etc etc about the original iPhone. Didn’t stop millions of people to get one. Will be the same here. Sorry, this thing is not for the thousands of geekheads but the millions of tech unsavy masses

  51. f you had the 16:9, and maintained the same 7.5′ width, then the iPad would have to be almost 14″ long. That would not fit in a purse, which was one of the mandates.

There will more buyers with purses than there will be “serious videophiles”

They certainly considered a 14″ behemoth, but it looked a little unwieldy.

  52. I agree 100% i got really excited then when it came out it ruined my day. I was expecting it to be like all of the predictions running snowlepord. Im just going to stick ipod thats just a pocket sized ipad.

  53. I love the ipad.

I think apple have studied what most people do for most of the day. Once you get home from work you cook dinner and then relax – right?

Relaxing for me involves sitting in front of the tv and browsing the web, before I had an iPhone this meant using a laptop on the couch.
Since I’ve had the iPhone I hardly touch the laptop as the touch screen interface is just too damn enjoyable on the iPhone…I mean a button keyboard is a fucking antique…I can’t believe it’s taken so long for a substitute. Thank you apple.

So back to the ipad…for me it is a ‘content and cloud’ machine…that’s it. And I bet it executes these perfectly while I’m relaxing in my living room.

  54. Give me a iTablet – 4GB RAM, 160GB HDD and MAC OSX 10.6… Anything else is rubbish.

  55. Holy Smokes the sky if falling!! No Flash, no USB, no toaster, no cool name, no floppy disk, no fingernail trimmer!! People, get a life. There must be something more interesting than flaming new products….

  56. Yes, you are right that I am greedy prick.
We don’t need USB ports, SD, webcam, 160 gb HDD and Multitasking. We can live without Flash. I don’t trust you. I control you. I own you. If you badmouth about iPad then Apple’s Gestapo thugs will shovel it up your ass for your treason. Stevie

  57. Hey, you don’t like it, don’t buy one. Now sit down and shut up.

  58. Reason number 17: Windows created something over 2 years before this called the Ultra-Mobile PC. It has a touch screen, FULL Operating System, Hard drives with upto 1 TB space, multi-tasking, multiple USB Ports, etc. Then apple makes a half-assed copy of this and they get all this publicity and everyone buys one, just because they’re named after a fruit.

  59. @Bob Arkus

Hey Bob, If you are going to bash the author’s spelling, you should make sure your message does not have errors. I think you meant “You’re a top journalist now.” Too bad you couldn’t get past his spelling error. The article was great.

    Bob Arkus said:

I stopped reading after you couldn’t spell the word “career”. Way to go buddy….your a top journalist now. Almost made it past the first sentence.

  60. I am definitely feeling disappointed with this device, especially after all of the hype. I was expecting a tablet computer with all the functionality of a regular computer.

I guess this will be a device for those people who aren’t really into computers and don’t see the need for an iPhone. I’m almost reminded of those NetTV devices from way back when, for old people who just browse shitty websites and check e-mail with no need for storage.

My main gripe–and one I can’t believe I haven’t seen elsewhere about the iPad–is that I cant take notes on this thing in class. Styluses may be a thing of the past but I was hoping I could take notes that could be easily transferred, have internet functionality, and a bit more data storage. I didn’t think I was hoping for too much from apples newest product, but I am definitely left blue-balled by this release…

  61. i agree completely with the blog author here (kudos for second-language skills, btw)… the iPad indeed sucks – and i say this as someone who has used Macs and Apple hardware since the mid-80s, was an Apple-certified Federal Support Coordinator, wrote the first ThinkSpeedC MacBASIC speech-to-text software library, implemented auto-save under Quark XPress under MacOS, and so on… the iPad does indeed, ‘suck,’ and suck mightily – it is a big FAIL, as it does not run full-blown OS X – who the @#%$%! wants an big iPod Touch?

  62. If you follow the breadcrumbs, (see iPhone, ihone 3g, and iPhone 3gs) apple never implements an all in one device, notice how the earlier iPods didn’t have fm radios and crappy VGA camerAs built in like all the off brands did at walmart. I bet well see a lot of this stuff in future releases, and if u can even get 500,000 people buying refreshed products every year, ur profits are much larger. Bottom line, why would apple make a mediocre device, that does a lot of things? Why not make a product that’s perfect at what it’s made for, and figure out the bolt ons later after uve sold millions. If Steve jobs and team could have put a web cam, muti tasking, and whaever else in there, and keep costs down, and have everything run perfectly, he would have. We will see webcams before long, imagine photo booth with this thing :o p

    Reason #1 should be:

It’s not a powerful, open operating system where you can just install your own software.

People understand that a phone is part of a phone network and has to be 100% reliable as a phone, so you can’t just open it up to hackers.

an ipod is just a music player and a toy. It fits in your pocket for god’s sake. Once again, we’ll put up with a god damn toy being limited.

    But this isn’t a phone.

It was SUPPOSED to be a computer. A lot of people who liked apple have used computers. Ya know? They’ve even used computers that have a real operating system. Ya know?

The iPad is a condescending insult. The ap store. The god damn ap store.

Why isn’t the iPad running OSx? Because then you could pick your own software, you could download your own movies, etc. etc.

For now I’m waiting for a company that has some vision to come out with a touchpad.

Also I’m not in a huge hurry, I already have a tablet computer. Yeah, it’s heavy and it uses a pen. But ya know I like that it has a real keyboard when I don’t lay the screen flat, and I like having a real hard drive and I like have a dvd burner. I guess, since I like useful features more than thinness I wasn’t an apple sort of person anyway.

  64. I think the iPad could be better, some of the flaws are mentioned above, but knowing Apple’s history, they will listen and will make it better. Look at the iPhone..

I don’t think the iPad is for everyone, but for those wanting a different experience.

I would keep one on the coffee table in my house, and take it in the car for extended road trips and flights to personal destinations.

  65. I think that iPad – is really great device. Apple – forever.

  66. Willie stated:

    Who wants the iPad?
The millions of buyers who have no idea what you are talking about in your post. It’s the device for the “rest of us”. Apple is now a huge company that just can not sustain itself by making products that a niche group of techno
geeks will accept. It’s for people age 2-92 like my dear 80 year old mother who bought an iBook but really only uses it to look at pictures and surf the web (after I open the program up for her remotely via back to my Mac). She will get one and ditch the iBook. BTW, she can afford it as she bought a ton of Apple stock
when it was 17$. So get over it and watch how it will take off without USB, multitasking and all the other fanboy requests that most people don’t even know what they mean

  67. I would add to the list – Closed System.

PopSci makes a compelling case and some it up nicely:

“‘Once we replace the personal computer with a closed-platform device such as the iPad, we replace freedom, choice and the free market with oppression, censorship and monopoly.”

    http://www.popsci.com/gadgets/article/2010-01/ipad’s-closed-system-sometimes-i-hate-being-right

  68. YOU CAN SUCK BIG AND FAT MEXICAN DICKS YOU ASSHOLE.. DIDNT YOU HEAR THE KEYBORD IS BIGGER FAGGOT?!?!?! WHAT IS YOUR FUCKING PROBLEM..PROBABLY U DONT HAVE THE MONEY TO BUY IT SO SHUT YOUR FUCKING MOUTH FULL OF SHITT THIS IS ALL BULLSHIT.. I INVITE YOU TO WATCH THE VIDEO OF IPAD ON MAC AND LISTENNNNNNNN SLOWLY REPEAT WHAT STEVE SAIS BC IM SURE UR A FUCKING RETARD BC YOUR ONLY SAYING SHIT

  69. 16 reasons why you don’t understand the philosophy and marketing concepts behind the iPad. You want a netbook (from all the “features” you described), but you’re also complaining that it’s too big and too heavy? I’d like to see you come up with a pocket-size device that has everything you want (including USB, external drives, 16:9 screen, blah blah). Oh, and cost about the same as the Kindle. Good luck.

In 6 months, this post will be part of the group that Apple will label as “lack of understanding and imagination.”

Meanwhile, my mom is so eager to order one. My mom, who doesn’t even have an mp3 player!

And when iPad is upgraded — most likely they will add a vidcam and/or GPS — plus running OS 4.0… their competitors will be SO FAR behind it’s not even funny anymore.

  70. Oh yeah, and I totally agree with MaxiPad ()…. people who gripe about the iPad the most are the techno-geeks who probably own everything under the sun already and have six laptops, two iPhones, three game machines and 4 netbooks… they want their gadgets and COMPUTER that fits into their pockets. Naturally, they hate the iPad.

But what they don’t understand is 80% of the world are not techno geeks. They’re moms and pops and kids on the go — going to soccer games and concerts and school and running errands. They don’t want a “smart phone” — who REALLY want to surf the web and watch movies on a 4″ screen? They don’t want a computer either — who frigging care about Quark XPress or Photoshop or blah blah blah. Moms who just want to read their email, surf the web for the next great recipes, read their favorite blogs, update their Facebook statuses, organize their family photos, watch some YouTube videos, check their stocks and bank balances, and read a chapter of the latest best seller.

That’s the market Apple is going after, not the Sheldon Coopers. And it’s a HUGE market. Even my mom, who doesn’t even own a laptop or smart phone or mp3 player, is intrigued.

Not to mention apps, apps, apps. Have the iPhone geeks forgotten about the apps?

  71. I love how people are bashing your English, pretty crap argument.
As for the review…Spot On, you said a mouthful mate, keep it up

  72. Actually the tablet space that we all thought they would enter, has a clearly defined set of functionalities. That is precisely the reason that everyone was so disappointed with the iPad. It had NONE of those features.
Think about it, if Apple had just come out and said they were developing an advanced ereader like nothing else you’ve ever seen, we would have been impressed. But to say this whole time they were developing a tablet, and then show this? They killed their own hype by claiming this device was something it wasn’t.
You can’t just come into a space that has been in existence for over 10 years now, say you have something to add to it, then change the definition of the space to fit your device.
A tablet has been, is, and always will be a device that is a fully functional notebook you can write on. It should be a notepad replacement. It CAN be a convertible laptop, OR a slate type device, but it needs to be a fully functional computer to fit the definition. Even a netbook is a fully functional computer at it’s heart.
The iPad is a big iPod touch…not even an iPhone. And it HARDLY fills the space they claimed it would.
Even Steve Jobs’ Reality Distortion Field couldn’t help him this time.

    Hey !
I am completely agree with all your opinions. I was also thinking that iPad will surely be the second great thing from apple. and off course I hate the name iPad. when I first saw this name on a blog post, I passed reading this as iPod… he he he…After reading three lines I felt it is something else and then I read back.
the biggest flaw of iPad its not supporting flash and then the second thing is the usb.
but after all these things are lacking, apple will surely sell a huge no of iPad because there isn’t scarcity of fools.. :)

  74. Finally someone who says the truth about just another Apple “give me your money for a useless device that does everything worse than any other brand”. It’s nothing but a toy. And not even a good one. Wait until Steve Jobs even tells you when to use the toilet. Apple customers are Apple marionettes.

  75. Why is everyone shedding tears about the absence of a camera, no SD card, no usb, no this no that…. Instead of sobbing why don’t you do your extended research before further looking like an idiot on this dull-witted website. Seriously, you all sound like cockeyed striplings trying to fabricate deluded points out of your butts. If you at least invested a minute searching through Apple.com you would realize how much of a gook you really were for squealing nonsense, ever heard of the Apple’s 30 pin usb connector? That is the real highlight of it all, there is a SD card adapter for file sharing from you devices, and a USB adapter for alternate sharing… AT THE MOMENT. Have you not realized how powerful this protocol is? Have you not visited an Apple Store lately? For example: Their POS system are handheld powered by an iPod Touch, less powerful than the iPad, it is equipped with a magnetic stripe card reader while at the same time powering the laser scanner that read barcodes. A purchase is done within 10 seconds, I have personal experience with it. Why wouldn’t this powerful technology not be implemented into the iPad? You’re just not thinking farther than your arms reach. Your camera will come, medical hardware is readily available, creative and technical arts have found use for it already. I mean, it’s frustrating to meet face to face with some of you, the lack of faith, well it could be there, but probably the most the perpetual desire for this groundbreaking company to finally not succeed.

    • @Raul On top of being rude, you are very naive. We all know there is a $30 USB adaptor but all of us with a little good sense think it’s a f***ing scam. Apple could easily add a USB port for free, but no, they’d rather upsell us just a bit more and make an adaptor available. So great, I have my adaptor, now I have to carry that too with me when I go to the coffee shop? What about my camera (if it ever comes as an accessory), do I have to carry that too? So much for the mobility…

  76. 1st – iTamp, iRag

2nd – 64gb? My Laptop is 800gb. Yes, my LAPTOP, not my PC, thats only 130gb

Ive never been a fan of apple to be honest, I have no iPhone because as a student I cant afford a plan, I have a Blackberry and I love it, big enough screen, internet access, all the tweeting I can muster, and no touch screen!

And books….oh how I love books!

  77. For someone to whom english is a second language, that was well said! Just the right amount of sass for my liking! lol

  78. What about limitation of usage? No free programs, no plugins, web browser limitations, no usb mass media storage use.

If this thing could be folded, then maybe it would be practical.

I vote for iPhone or iPod. iPad sucks.

  79. I’m typing on an iPhone, so I’ll try to keep this brief.

This article confuses me. The author states that he will buy this device, but lists sixteen reasons why it’s a disappointment. This reminds me of being a child on Christmas morning and checking the presents I got from Santa against the list I sent him (I always made copies).

Santa never gave me everything on my list, but he always gave me some of it. Some years, he even gave me most of it. When my parents explained that there was, in fact, no Santa Claus and that they had to buy each gift I received, I grew a little more understanding about why I didn’t get everything. Everything would have been a little expensive.

I digress. The iPad was never announced by Apple before Wednesday. Apple never even said they were working on a tablet. In fact, every detail, every spec, every aspect of the device’s functionality was fabricated by tech blogs trying to increase their traffic years before Apple gave us one word about the device.

Is it really fair to hold Apple to the unrealistic standard of making a device that fulfills such expectations? Did anyone really expect Steve Jobs to walk out on stage and say, “You asked for it, now here it is!” Apple has never given us what we wanted. Apple has never really given us what we needed. Apple usually just gives us something new.

If you hadn’t been reading (and, in some cases, writing) page after page after page of tablet rumors and predicted features, if you had never heard word one that Apple was working on one, you would have shit your pants on Wednesday.

    Why?

Because Apple paid close attention to what people were doing with their iPhones. The stock apps like “Mail”, “Phone”, “Safari” and “Calender” were playing second and third fiddle to exciting third-party apps like Tweetie, Stanza, Shazam, and Super Monkey Ball. But the on-screen keyboard was too small, and the game controls were too close together. The battery life was too short to support all of this multitasking. So Apple made exactly what we needed. Those of us with iPhones needed a bigger screen to do the stuff we (admit it) spend most of our day doing.

This device isn’t meant to replace our computers. It has a dock connector, for crying out loud! This device isn’t meant for intensive video editing or recording music, neither is the iPhone. This device is meant to be your gateway into the world of computers if you’re like my Grandpa and have never owned one. It’s meant to be the go-between for people who have iPhones and laptops, something to free you from your desk but still be big enough to read.

I won’t make any predictions about where the iPad is going. I probably won’t buy one because money is too tight right now, especially in today’s economy, and it’s not a justifiable expense. But I agree that Apple has done something different. When I’m using Photoshop on my computer and want to check out a tutorial, an iPad would let me watch it without sacrificing screen real estate. When I come home from work and want to lounge on the couch and check my Twitter feed, I wouldn’t have to burn my knees or strain my eyes to do it. If I go to graduate school and need to take notes in class, it sure would be convenient to type on a device that didn’t obstruct my view of the professor or the board.

In short, give Santa a break. There’s always next year.

P.S. I really don’t mind the name “iPad”. It reminds me of the PADDs from Star Trek. Or did we all forget that we’re hopeless geeks?

  80. People Will Buy A Turd If You Market It Properly

I’ve been spouting this theory of mine for years now, and I think it applies perfectly to most if not all of Apple’s products.

Lets take a grapefruit (feel free to insert your favorite fruit or veggie here) and lets find a good time slot for it on primetime television in the states. We’re going to market the holy shit out of this thing, but we’re going to do it slowly. At first we’ll just run a few 30 seconds slots where we just show this grapefruit sitting there doing nothing at all. Within a week, two at the most, we’ll have created a buzz online and people will be talking about this thing and speculating to no end about what its purpose may be. We’ll slowly start to ramp up the marketing hype by using some text and maybe some flashy somethingornothers on the screen. Within a month we’ll have people foaming at the mouth as long as we don’t say anything about it being just a grapefruit. In no time at all you’ll see mass hysteria over a grapefruit and people will be more than willing to open their wallets and PayPal accounts to start shelling out whatever price we ask, and trust me, we’re going to be asking a lot.

Why will this work? Because people in general don’t like to think for themselves. They want the thinking done for them. They are slave drones who are programmed to sit on their fat asses and absorb whatever is fed to them via the media (which is more than happy to sell anything as long as they get their chunk). They are programmed to go to work, give up 1/3 of their income to a government without asking why, come home and sit in front of their 42 inch hi-def television sets and swallow whatever tripe is thrown at them visually. They are akin to grazing cows with a mentality to match. It’s this level of complete retardation (no offense to the disabled out there but the word fits so well here) that allows companies like Apple to survive and thrive. People will buy whatever the fuck Apple is selling because they don’t know any better.

Having said all that, I’ll give Apple some credit where it’s due. The iPod is pretty cool. Having 100+ gb of music at your fingertips ready to go wherever you do is fucking sweet. That’s where my interest in Apple ends and my loathing begins.

iTunes is a steaming pile of bloated dogshit. There’s other software that allows you to do the same thing with less Apple bullshit splattered all over it, much less. Google is your friend here. There are literally hundreds of mobile phones on the market that do the same thing as the iPhone AND MORE. Google this one too, compare results, judge for yourself. It like I’m just making this shit up, the truth really is out there.

Now for the iPad. Talk about not being connected to any reality we currently live in! What in the fuck is this giant block of shit? It looks like an iTouch (myself) that survived a nuclear blast only to mutate into a behemoth pile of bigger shit. No USB? Okay. I guess the 99.9% of us who have pen drives and other portable storage devices are fucked. Way to screw us (again) Apple. No Flash? That’s weird because the last time I surfed the internet the majority of websites used Flash. What in the shit were they thinking with this thing? I know what they were thinking. We’ll market the hell out of this piece of shit, and people will buy it because they are too stupid to know any better. Apple’s profits and “innovations” are all fueled by you the consumer. As soon as you start enlightening yourselves and doing the research and making informed decisions in regards to what you purchase, they’ll start to get the picture and eventually fuck off. Hopefully sooner than later.

I never bought a MAC and I never will. I build my own computers because I like to choose the parts and the software I want. I don’t want Apple building anything for me nor choosing what software I should use, ever. I think, therefore I am. The day I let Apple make any decisions for me is the day I cease to exist as a human being.

The best part? I know I’m not alone.

  81. Once again..My thoughts are the ipad is an epic fail..they will sell tons of them of course, but it is nothing but a WAY OVERPRICED itouch on steroids.

People, stop ragging on Sebastien….This is a GREAT blog…Great discussions..if you dont like Sebastien or tyhis blog then feel free to leave.

Do you know how ridiculous it makes somebody look to show up on a blog and rag on the blog or the author? You look like idiots doing this….if a blog or author is so bad in your mind, why spend 1 second posting?

Reminds me a bit of the EGOMANIAC NUTBAG @Geohot who literally showed up on Sebastiens blog to post a few times and then makes another post calling everybody posting a ‘TOOL’.

With such a high IQ did it escape him that HE WAS POSTING and had been posting, on the very blog he calls people ‘TOOLS’ for posting on it?

LMAO….Proof that even a high IQ is no match for simple common sense…..

  82. Suck my cock!

  83. I think that they took the iphone/ipod touch and made it bigger to make more money on a product they already created that they expect everybody to buy all over again. I’m going to get one, but I do think it’s pointless, My thing is that if you slap the Apple Sticker on it I’ll buy it.

  84. Dear Steve Jobs,

We have bad news for you. The factory in China already have thousands of new PC TABLETS with Window7. It does offer multitasking and FLASH and more.

    More detail at

    http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=3247916&id=691923258

They will arrive here in next few months or sooner. This will make you to eat your heart and die.

This is our sweet revenge for you. Grin.

  85. I do agree with almoste every reason you gave. Their going for the people who can’t use computers as it is right now because it’s too big to be a pocket device and too uncapable to be a pc. If the mac air and the iPod touh had not been released, then this would be a great product. There is simply no place in the world right now for this device. Given a beefier OS and a known CPU, output and input like optical drive and USB etc… It would be worth the cash their demanding. I am not sold. Extremely let down. I’m glad there are people other than isheep.

  86. But you have to admit, Apple is a Status symbol, if you can afford Apple, then you got some money, plus they are great products. If you like to flaunt your green around, you’ll buy Apple, no matter what the product is, if it’s new and it has the Apple Symbol, Buy IT!

  87. I totally agree with you..Thanks

  88. Oooo yah, a status symbol. Who gives a fuck what it does as long as everyone has one. You tools are the very reason Apple makes any money at all. They create bullshit products like this because they know ignoramus rejects who don’t know fuckall about electronics will come out in droves with their wallets wide open. The only thing missing for the iPad is an iDouche. I bet you idiots would buy that too.

  89. Everybody is experiencing “Future Shock” scared that the iPad will change everything. By the way “ITOUCH” is not a product it doesn’t exist. Since when have netbooks stirred up so much grief, since when has a tablet done this? I know NEVER. You people don’t get it, Apple gets it, they’re the smart ones not you. If any of you created your own product, it would’ve NEVER be as successful as the Apple iPad, including Microsoft. Hahahah, “my PC table has a virus!!!!” “It still runs .EXE crap, but it does has a 100 MP camera and you can load all your music because it has a TB 7200 RPM hardrive, oh and it has 6 USB ports for all my six cameras, but It’s slow as a three toed sloth cause it’s running on Windows 10″ Piece of S#it software on POS hardware. That’s why your favored companies have failed, get it into your heads, YOU SUCK.

  90. @johnnyrio are you mad because you’re not socially excepted, because you don’t have friends? Do you live in the arid dessert in Arizona, do you have cherokee ancestors, are that ugly? Maybe an Apple product can change all of that. People would at least look at you.

  91. I know electronics, I am totally into them, flaunting is not why i’m getting an iPad, and have an ipod touch, iphone, MacBook Pro, and iPod nano. I do it because I love Electronics, I’m just saying most people will buy it because they find Apple as a status symbol, I find Apple to be electronic genius’ with super powerful products and one of the top fortune 500 companies. They are Masterminds.

  92. when I heard about this 1st I was like “wow” another goodie from mac, then I was like “is that all there is?”

  93. I was having trouble trying to answer why it was even made, my friend got an ipad and my iPhone kicks it’s ass. The ipad is just an upgraded itouch. I’m still a bit anti-apple anyway, Quicktime and my iPhone are the only two connections I have with Apple. Windows tablets are better and cheaper and are easier to use.

  94. This iPad is complete Garbage. Point made.

  95. Are you kidding me? I accept that you have your own opinion, but I think that you were out of reasons before you started. Let me get this straight, 4 out of 16 reasons are superficial reasons that you would here from a school girl. “The name sucks!”, “It’s big!”, “It’s heavy!” and “It’s not pretty!”. Why not complain that it’s black and that it wouldn’t help you get the girls.
Personally, I never was amazed by the iPhone or iPod Touch. I’ve had a MacBook Pro for two years now, and I’ve always worked with the multi-touch pad. When the iPhone came out, I already understood that it was just a mix of GameBoy, recent technology and a multi-touch track pad. The multi-touch is a technology in itself that is quite complicated. It was an exploit to make it as versatile as it was on the iPhone, and now they made it quite bigger and more precise. I don’t see what’s it’s missing or the good points, I see a technological work of art that will sprout exponentially into something bigger in a few years.

  96. Well said. Thanks

  97. Upon further consideration, I feel there is more to be said that hasn’t been mentioned yet. Like a genuine n00b, I read every comment preceding my first comment and each one before posting this one.

The iPad doesn’t have a floppy drive or a telephone jack. Whoops, I meant to say a CD/DVD-ROM drive or USB ports.

See what I did there? Who uses floppy disks anymore? When the first iMac came out, all of the computer people denounced it for the glaring oversight of neglecting to include a floppy drive, the cornerstone of media storage at the time.

Now the cornerstones of media storage are optical discs and USB hard drives and thumb drives, USB cameras, USB keyboards and mice. What can we expect? We can expect optical media to go the way of the floppy and USB to go the way of the serial port. (I know all you PCs will immediately cry out that your computers still have serial ports, but look at a Mac.)

If the apps deliver as well as Jobs has suggested, then the iPad will provide a sustainable cloud-computing hardware platform. “It only has 160 gigs on board!” A pittance compared to the online storage that’s available. “It doesn’t have USB ports to connect a camera or a printer! Or a keyboard!” Eye-fi for the camera lets you import directly into your iPad photo apps, wi-fi lets you print directly to wireless printers, Bluetooth lets you connect your keyboard and (sigh) mouse if you simply must have one.

No multitasking? There’s no real multitasking on computers as it stands now. Graphical operating systems have just gotten very good at convincing you that you’re doing several things sinultaneously. This iPad is just going to be a little more honest about things; it will give you a 1ghz processor per application and offer seamless transitions from one app to another.

So you won’t be able to burn or rip CDs anymore. So you can’t pop in a disc and watch a movie only to trade it out for another one when you want to watch something else. You will, however, be able to stream television via Hulu, watch tons of movies with Netflix OnDemand, and get your fill of music with Pandora and Last.fm at your whim.

So you won’t be able to plug in your digital camera. Wireless transfer will get the job done, and imagine a Photoshop app that implements multitouch! No more single points of contact like we have to use now with antiquated pointing devices.

Let’s try to be a little more optimistic and save most of the criticism for when people have actually USED the device for more than a couple of minutes. Sure, it’s not perfect; it won’t cook you dinner or give you a blowjob while you watch the Lost season finale, but maybe (just maybe) it will surprise us with its functionality and the innovations that are sure to follow. Remember the iMac and how, after just a couple years of dorky colored plastic, we got some of the really nifty desktop machines that are now coming out of Apple.

  98. your a idiot , it has usb to plug into your computer and it works just like the iphone , 30 somthing pin to usb duh, do some research, on the apple website it says that it does work with the ipod video out dongle, i think it look great not ugly but that is a personal opinion. it is very light and the network is great on wireless and at&t has the best 3g network and everyone knows it! It does have multitasking as well and the source for all of these thing is (apple.com)
Hey author do some research before bashing or you will sound ignorant and your credit as an author will be worthless and is as far as i can tell. half of your list of things it does not do it actually does!

  99. and buy the way widgets are worthless and gay and the worst invention ever!

  100. YESSSS! People are starting to invade these stupid articles, widgets suck, why not dedicate all your resources to one thing at a time to do something RIGHT! Instead this clan of hoots who are happy with multitasking impotent stupid little devices and bash on everything that doesn’t, labeling it weak. Most of all my friends hate their phones, palm pres, Droids, Blackberries, quit defending junk people, just cause you don’t want to be different and anti-Apple. These comments definitely show how ignorant your readers are @Sebastian, constantly bringing up matters that have been addressed and continue to complain.

  101. Garbage article, it was bloggers like you that first hated on the iPhone, but eventually disappeared after it sold millions. What are you gonna do if the iPad is successful? Hide under your couch? And your complaining about the name, and you can’t hold 1.5 lbs because its too heavy? The bezel around the screen is so you can hold it without getting your god dam fingers on the touch sensors dumbass. Give me some compelling arguments, and keep hatin as Apple watches the money pile up.

  102. whoe ever posted this is gay you dont even have the item yet and yet your spamming about fake comments people like you have no life at all just cuz you think it sucks that proves that you are freaking nerds dont underestimate apple they will over come your comments and you will be sitting there thinking about how bad apple is when there isnt anything to think bad about

  103. You forgot to mention that it is running a non x86 ARM processor, which means no other pc based OS to turn too. If this was just a tablet running mac osX with iPhone application emulation, this would be totally different. But it isn’t its running apples crappy iphone style os thats as rigid and as minimalist as everything else they make.

Why go ARM? Why not stick in an atom, and allow people to run osX, and make it a tablet?

    Apple make no sense

  104. This thing will act as nothing more than a coffee-table conversation piece or an easy way to spot the elitist jerk sitting at Starbucks tapping away on his giant glass wafer. An over-sized iPod Touch is not revolutionary. It’s just… bigger.

  105. THANK GOD SOMEONE SAID IT!

Yes, the ipad sucks for all these reasons. Jobs has the nerve in his keynote to bash mobile laptops when his ipad (or ipod grande) can’t do half of the stuff my Sony Vaio can do.

What a performance from Jobs to sell this unessential product to boost his stock, P.T. Barnum would have been proud.

Hope the ipad tanks and Google’s tablet kicks their hippie butts!

  106. The funny thing is people buy Mac products regardless of how overpriced and shitty they are. I dont get it. Its like an addiction.

I suspect this will sell well due to the sheer number of macaholics who like to waste money for crappy products.

  107. I think you’re comparing the iPad to a computer which it is obviously not the point of an iPad; its just a device for books, music, movies, journal (notes). Also how would you ever know whether it would hurt your eyes or not and the keyboard is simply amazing, is a much bigger version then the iPhone/iTouch which people only complain about the size of it, and if you can’t use it properly I think you should go see the doctors and just stop complaining.

  108. ipad might be worth it if it was a large iphone but its worse no cam no phone etc. basically a big ipod

  109. People who point on Grammatical and English Errors are Douchy. To big of a tool to just admit they understand what the author was saying even if they accidentally spelled something wrong. I bet the ladies love a dude who can find grammar errors in a magazine. Aye Aye captain Douchies

  110. i would agree that the ipad is a very useless world and who will actually buy something that
browses the internet just like the computer you already have. lets face the fact no one needs it.
“its nice its entertaining” to the two hundred people out of the world but really i think its stupid
way for apple to amuse there users because they have no more ideas. In reality my computer can do much more its a PC by the way and i rather read and buy real books because they feel better and hold much more value than a machine that will be out dated in 2 years.

  111. Great blog post. Thanks for kicking this off.

Seriously … Apple is smoking something. I own 3 MacBook Pros, an iMac, 2 iPod touches and an iPhone. I love Apple products but this one just left me going … “what the ****?”

Dear Apple: Take a look at the Sony eReader … which rocks. Why would I ever read a giant iPod Touch after reading on e-ink? Are you trying to destroy my eyesight? Perhaps blind me to your next launch? No sir … no you will not.

Also … Apple … the storage limit is laughable … I get USB thumb drives at conferences for free with more space. Let’s face it … this product is a sad look backward at how expensive storage space once was.

Apple doesn’t have a handle on this market at all. I love the video with the person reading it with their feet on a coffee table. What are you going to do in a cafe? Ask for a foot stool? Are you going to lie it flat on a table? How are you going to type? You will look like a moron. Unless Apple quickly creates a giant spin the bottle app. I guess that might work.

For anyone who says that this product is inexpensive … really? You’re going with cheap? Last time I checked $600 for a small relatively useless device isn’t a bargain. Anyone who shells out $600 for this thing cannot complain about the economy … not even for a second. In fact they should immediately have their salary reduced.

Please enlighten us as to the unique aspects of this product:

  112. Let’s take a step backward and revel in Apples brilliance!

They created a ground breaking device. It is a computer and a sanitary pad! Cool! Okay … it’s not very absorbent and it sucks as a computer … but it is silvery and has an Apple on it! Hooray! I can’t wait to buy one so I can play .99 games on an even bigger screen! Sweet!

Whoah … and let’s not forget that Apple has re-invented the Calendar! Woo wee! I love me some dates and some notes and some times. What fun.

Don’t be so mad though Apple junkies if we criticize. We don’t mind if you buy one. Your money is yours to waste. It’s either you buy that or you will fork out some cheddar on a black “got root?” t-shirt.

It’s also good to keep the boys in Cupertino feeling confident that their giant iPod touch is revolutionary as they drive back to their over priced suburban homes in a Prius with failing brakes to their collections of Star wars bobble heads. Nothing says revolutionary like soda guzzling California nerds! Thanks guys! Thank you for the modern day Newton. Of wait … the Newton was a good product. Sorry.

Aperture 3 looks good though … but it won’t run on the iPad. So sad.

  113. Try to give Apple feedback on the iPad:

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/

    But where is it ???

  114. totally agree… each time apple is lauching a worse product. ipad is like a bigger ipod touch but worse !

  115. I am an apple fanboy. This is by far the worst product from Apple. It makes sense not to have multitasking on an iPhone/IPad. Now, I see the point of my mother buying a thing like this if she had no PC, nor an iPhone. I think that retirees might see the value in a product like this to be in the coffee table near the lounge sofa to take a look at their grandchildren and annoy visitors. Maybe drawing more retirees into iTunes Store with a product like this.

For the rest of people… it is so irrelevant.

  116. Tenth Grader says: February 11, 2010 at 4:06 pm

seriously apple you dropped the ball on this one! who was smokin what!? when they created this monster? I love apple gear but this is like spitting in my face… Apple did you realy think people would but this rather than a netbook. People want to use all apps available – content is king this is just landfill!

  117. Lack of multitasking is ridiculous. If you can’t think of a use for multitasking then you are immediately marked as a consumer, not a creator, of media. In order to create media efficiently you need to multitask. I can’t believe they’d release a device where you can’t run a spreadsheet and a word processor at the same time. This device is designed to be a small flat shovel to push other peoples’ created works (that were not created on said shovel) down your throat. Lack of Flash speaks volumes about who the target audience for this thing is as well. These are people who are not interested in user created content, global network news online content, or, let’s face it, porn. So what kind of uncreative, uninformed, non-social, non-sexual humanity will come of this thing? I think Steve Jobs created this device just for himself and decided to see who else would buy it.

  118. Gillian Seed says: February 17, 2010 at 3:03 pm

    Yeah!

    The iPad!
    What’s next, the iDiaper?

    could they be more creative?

  119. I want to run full-blown OS X – who the @#%$%! wants an big iPod Touch?

    Who wants the iPad?

The millions of buyers who have no idea what you are talking about in your post.

    HAHA apple

  120. Do we have apple red necks in here or something? Very valid points have been made but yet some muppets are focusing on spelling and language. Two words, grow up! The author has some really valid points and as an avid iPhone user I can’t help but think if the ipad as a glorified iPhone without the selling point of convenience. Take from it what you will but I ‘personally’ think the iPad is a flash in the pan without the necessary Flash. Best web experience? Steve you’re kidding noone. The fact that apple won’t use Flash on their site is enough. QuickTime will rule the world! Lol. Really? Let’s try and stop the damn corporations from dictating the direction of the web and maybe ask the users.

  121. it must be beamed up seperately, we can’t use it

  122. Well, I totally disagree with your views. iPad is a new category which will be super popular. We all grew up with the PC / Swiss Army Knife paradigm, where the PC is the universal tool for everything. Who says it has to be so in the future? It is more likely that the PC paradigm will split into 2 parts: Work and Entertainment. These are completely different scenarios involving different types of users, different functionality and different expectations.

  123. 100% true I hate ipad!!

  124. Hell yeah iPad sucks big time. It’s a shame Apple even came out and presented this product. It’s just a big giant iPod touchscreen. Seriously apple you need to live up to your high standards. There is definitely a need for an ipad like device.
    - First of all make the device fold able so that we can use properly the keyboard.
    - Improve battery
    - standard USB and SD ports : no adapters
    - video conference capabilities : face camera
    - multitasking
    - Widgets
    - better design
    - available to any mobile provider
    - better grip (it’s slippery)

    Chris.

    you covered major points.
    I never bought the iphone
and I will never buy this…ever
netbooks are wonderful, small light, and have
    good storage space.
    Apple products cost to much
very little bang for your hard earned buck!!!!
As far as I’m concerned, Apple is rotten to the core..

  126. 1. No camera
    2. Steve says that THIS IS REVOLUTION device, but I`m think that NOTHING ipad have revolutionaly NOTHING absolutly.
    3. to big black areas oround screen.
    4. no usb
    5. too havy
    6. storage fully sucks. What a 16-32 Gb its one-two not big blu-rays hidef videos.
    7. no super fast connections for informations from PC|mac to device storage transitions.
    8. no dvd|blu-ray|cd|minicd nothing
    9. no loop for rope neck
    10. no screen cover
    11. very low speed of processor and video card, you can not play in the banal directx games.
12/ and importantly it is almost complete absence of difference between the iphone and what ipad villain even hold a candle to mac book air

  127. It does have TV output! It is just that it is not good enough because it only goes up to VGA and everyone wants HDMI.

  128. This “thing” sucks balls and whoever has bought one or plans on buying one is a f*cking retarded. You don’t deserve to have money in your pocket cause your to f*cking stupid.

    There. I said it.

  129. Sebastien

Very good point. The much hyped-up ipad is all about generating cash revenue for Apple and Steve Jobs. I do not really see a practical use for this device. Apple keep saying you could surf the web and read books seemlessly, but we all know that this is bull. How the #### could you surf the net when there is no flash. Its like taking a picture without flash. You get pictures, but not good pictures. How the #### could you read books if this does not have e-ink technology. The kindle may be a bland device, but it serve it’s purpose and that is to allow readers read in a natural way.

The point I am trying to make is if you think it is cool and have the money to throw around, then buy it. Please do not support these corporations that try to use their marketing skills to manipulate and steer buyers to squeeze every dime out of your pocket.

  130. Agreed on all counts.

In terms of utility, effectiveness, and efficiency, Apple is horrid.

In terms of business savvy and not underestimating the general stupidity of the American public who buy iPhones as a status symbol, yet barely make rent, Apple is a genius.

Their market is the less intelligent, faux-hipster, mommy’s paying for it crowd, who generally don’t care about utility and function, more about brand name.

  131. I sold all my shares and shorted the stock today.

I agree with what you said.

  132. Can you use windex on “this” when you dump a load on it from looking at non-flash porn?

I can video tape myself having sex with my $299 DELL netbook that has 160GB hard drive and flash for all my porn sites.

iPad is going to kill Apple.

  133. The iPad was let down in a HUGE way. It is just a lite version of the macbook Air or an oversized iPhone. I had some time to waste so I called Apple and pretended to know nothing. I listed all the things I would need the iPhone Air iMean iPad to do.
*Presentations Yeah!!! Ahh :( no way to get the video into a projector. I have a video out for the iPhone but it only works with you tube and MPEG movies. Will not show a spreadsheet or any other apps.
*Do more than one thing at a time nope :(
*Video Skype nooo :( no flash
    *Watch Hulu no again :(
3G? :( AT&T ripped me off when I went to China. Said it was their mistake and if I pay the $1,500 they said I owed. They would credit me the overcharges on my next bill. WTF? AT&T kiss my feet. I hijacked my iPhone and a whole new world of apps became available. I use T-Mobile with my iPhone

I HATE Microsoft…But I don’t have $1,000 to spend on a computer that will do these things.

  134. Ye i totally agree apple just wanna make money i pretty sure they can improve the ipad or iphone to make it better but they make out a crappy iphone 2g than they improve it to a 3g making people throw out their iphone 2g and getting the iphone 3g apple just wanna make money they dont give a crap about getting people happy same things goes for At&t they dont care about people being happy thats why apple join At&t and not the other networks because they care.

I do believe that Apple has revolutionized the use of touchscreens in cellphones, and facilitating the use and development of open-source applications “Apps” has truly cemented the iPhone’s legacy in cellphone history. But, I would sooner call Steve Jobs a marketing genius than a technological genius.

Have you seen the media conference where they introduced this horrible thing? His cronies applauded an cheered every tiny and otherwise normal thing he did! That’s marketing for ya… Tablet PCs & Slate Tablet PCs have been out for a while, how is this thing new? That’s marketing for ya… Apple has such a dismal market share in everything they do (globally) but make it look as if they run the show! That’s marketing for ya… They can sell $75 million in revenue for a product no one has personally seen or used! That’s marketing for ya… They can sell you the same product a year later by adding a compass feature (?), voice dialing capabilites (something all other phones already have), and adding the almighty letter “S” to 3G! That’s marketing for ya…

  137. I agree with you on most points.

This iPad thing is just a downgraded iPod Touch.

Take an iPod Touch, make it less portable, increase the price and you’ve got an iPad.

The only thing it does better than the iPod is browse the web and use office apps, but if that’s what I wanted I’d buy a netbook or a decent laptop instead of this crap. I’ll be better off that way.

iPad is a new product that solves no problem and answers no real need that has not been addressed before (and better).

  141. Soon as I heard no flash I laughed my ass off.

I’ve always used PCs, I always thought macs were for morons and people who go to starbucks to write crap on their laptop and act like pretentious jackasses.

If you’re trying to make a portable computer, do it right. We have laptops, we have phones, we have mp3 players, we don’t need some mix of all 3 that doesn’t do what laptops can do.

The Ipod, cool invention. (Even though I use a regular mp3 player, cause F-mac and Steve Jobs and the whole pretentious bullshit accompanied with Apple.)

The iphone, yea cool apps, but I’m not a cellphon-aholic, I prefer the days when people just had house phones.

The ipad? A joke, it sucks, but eventually they’ll probably come out with the ipad 2.0 which can actually do what a laptop can do, but I still won’t waste my money on it.

  143. 13 year old PC user says: April 3, 2010 at 9:34 am

Sure, the iPad is supposed to be some awesome thing, but of course, Steve forgot all of the main points that make a tablet computer a computer. This thing is just a giant iPod like most say. The lack of a usb port really upsets me. do you expect the customers to use this thing like a computer if it doesn’t have usb ports? Every SINGLE computer I’ve been on, used, borrowed or worked on has had some sort of usb port. Steve just fails on that one. It seems as though Apple forces you to use their equipment and their equipme only. Maybe that’s why the PC controls over 90% of the computer market. Compatibility is abseloutely key when a product comes out. Also, the storage space is an abseloute JOKE. Sure, anywhere from 8 GB to 64 GB is a reasonable amount of storage on an iPod touch, but if Steve expected this to be an all out computer alternative, then he was very skimpy in this area. For example, the computers at my middle school even have 80 GB of space or more, and they store tiny files such as word documents and the occasional video AT MOST. Most of the home computer users know that computers are the ideal source for storing percious photos, music, and many games, so much storage space is necessary for storage (at least 160 GB). Steve knows that this tablet was meant for media, and if he knows anything about computers, he would know that 64 GB is nowhere near enough space for even the most rare user.
Overall, I do believe that the iPad will sell at least moderately well, even though there are many technical and hardware related flaws. The Apple name is so respected and trusted that regardless of the bad, the good side of this thing will atract customers no matter what. This is partailly due to ther fact that the average Person is very gullable.

  144. I admit, I was one of those Apple loving geeks that got in line this morning to purchase an IPad. Yes, it’s cool and I have one.. but… as I use it I realized very quickly the iPad is limited. My corporate web site uses Flash extensively, most of the sites I visit use Flash, the iPad does not support Flash as I learned today. I should have done my homework and just kept using my iPhone and my Dell Laptop.. iStupid.

Might need an update to 32 things, now that the dopey pointless device has been released.

  146. Apple really has the nerve to create a bullshit type of device that is similiar to it’s other devices. Yes Apple has run out of ideas and they don’t give a damn fuck on what they are making. They are now a cheap & money hungry company just like Microsoft. Now it’s fuck apple for life!

You write perfectly well; I find that you write much better then the typical American who can’t spell or do simple math. You ask them where is Germany, and they probably point s to South America. This Ipad thing is all about money. The almighty dollar. Phase 1 is to sell the product to early adopters to take market share from competitors. Phase 2 is to fix the flaws in the first product and sell more and more. Phase 3 is to refine the product and sell to main consumers. This is a cycle use by corporations over and over again. Look at Microsoft with its shitty operating system. Economics 101 and Marketing 101.

How does Apple make money? Make a garbage product the first round, hype the heck out of it….then sell the same idiots the next generation product a year later and make twice the money. I think they left much of the obviously needed stuff off this one on purpose. The drones will buy it so they can pretend to be cool. Then Apple gets their money again in a year when they give ‘half’ of the stuff the ipad 1st gen was missing. The other half will come in the 3rd gen….that way they can fleece the moronic sheep 3 times over. It’s BRILLIANT ! !

  149. ONE BAD APPLE REALLY DOES SPOIL THE WHOLE BUNCH! YOU ARE CORRECT SIR! THIS APPLE IS ROTTEN! IT’S NOTHIN’ BUT A BIG OL’ IPOD TOUCH! LOOKS LIKE APPLE, SMELLS LIKE APPLE, EVEN TASTE LIKE APPLE… BUT NO! IT’S A PIECE OF SHIT!

  150. I bought my iPad, used it for about a day and I’m RETURNING IT! IT SUCKS! I was at the coffee shop and the WiFi worked great, but I visited my favorite gaming website, but COULD NOT PLAY THE GAMES because the browser DOES NOT SUPPORT FLASH! I decided to check out the web site for the new car I’m thinking about buying, but that site also did not work because it was created using Flash. NO FLASH means I don’t get the entire web! NO FLASH = NO IPAD FOR ME!

  151. The iPad is a joke. If Jobs were truly smart he would have made it Apple’s April Fools joke and given us all a good laugh and retained his dignity and his company’s fairly solid, yet dwindling reputation.

Apple has been relying on their masterful marketing for so long that they have failed to develop a product that delivers the goods. They think, “Hey, if we make an OK product and then over-hype and market the sh*# out of it, all of the MacTards will buy it, right?” Well, they’re pretty spot-on with that assumption. Many of the Mac folks were lined up to waste the ca$h their parents gave them the day before it went on sale. Why? because it has an Apple logo, and they absolutely MUST have it!

I agree with all of your points regarding the iPad, and fully expect the large PC manufacturers to capitalize on Apple’s half-assed attempt at launching a truly innovative product that bridges the gap between an iTouch and a laptop. I just saw a preview for the HP slate and it looks wayyyyyy better than the iPad. Wait another year or so and we’ll all be saying, “The iWhat?”

  158. Its a N82…Haha

  159. Well, I was not particularly bothered about Apple’s iPad, release. However, when I saw it being demonstrated on a Tech TV Show, I was impressed with the slick way you can surf the web just like on the iPhone.

In my mind the iPad, fills a nice niche, where you want a tool to browse the web or check something on the net. I loved the idea that you can run iPhone applications on the iPad, so you can do a lot of the cool things.

Whilst people say you can’t run flash on the iPad, I have mixed feelings about this. Flash movies consume a lot of CPU and download time, some web sites tend to overkill with flash adverts. Of course, there is the other side, where some cool content may be lost.

As for multi-tasking, they said on the TV Show you can multi-task between Applie apps, but you can’t do the same with third party Apps.

The biggest annoying things for me, is the keyboard, which does not exist. I am used to a real keyboard and typing on glass just does not give my fingers the feedback.

I don’t think that anyone will be giving up their PC anytime soon…..

But I do think that it is a great little tool. For instance, I wanted to go on a backpacking holiday and I wanted to take the guide books for the various places I wanted to visit. However, if you take several travel guide books they are heavy. So having you books in electronic format is pretty cool!. You can just flick open your iPad, decide your travel plan and then bingo….

However, I do think that the iPad might rely heavily on having internet available everywhere, howeber in the UK, your can’t get Free Wifi everywhere. Most hotels, cafes etc… seem to want to charge you. Also 3G internet, is costly.

I do think the iPad has a lot of potential, yes I wish they gave a real keyboard. I never liked the iPhone touch screen keyboard. Also, no USB is a pain. I have enough trouble trying to move data between two PC, because Firewalls keep kicking in. So, how am I supposed to exchange files between my PC and the iPad.

At the moment, I am still after a netbook, but a future iPad, will be a cooler versions of netbooks…..

  160. Hi,
I work for apple and I think we shoud do this: with the reagular price of the iPod touch, which is 299.99, we should raise the price up 200.00 cuz I feel like it! The ipad is nothing more than a giant iPod touch. I don’t really work for apple lol. But seriously, if you Download an app called icall on the ipad, what the heck r u gonna do??? Ipad is a huge waste of money it should be called the iWaste

  161. Reasonable says: April 7, 2010 at 8:58 am

iPad is plowing new ground in the mobile device market. Apple is doing a smart thing by building incrementally, starting with iPod.. adding things to get iPhone.. iterating again to get iPad, etc. Building on a consistent architecture, with drop-dead simplicity, and a fair amount of cool factor. There are two measures of success that can’t be argued. 1. Apple’s soaring stock price 2. People are flocking to the Apple store to buy their products.

iPad isn’t a laptop replacement. It is a ground plowing, first iteration “appliance” that focuses on specific things that the market seems very willing to buy. And it packages them together in a way that is simple and fun to use and maintain. Don’t buy it if you don’t want it. Apple is happy to have the absolutely huge market that is attracted to it. Iterations will come along that will improve it. That is normal. If you don’t like it now, you might in the future. If you need laptop function – buy a laptop. If you need to compose a lot of data and/or need to access Flash driven web sites, etc. – do not buy it. If you want a highly portable device that allows you to read books and easily “consume” data, give it a look. If you just don’t like it for any reason, buy a competitor’s product.

Apple is a true marvel in its ability to innovate and achieve is technical and business objectives. Its market cap has now surpassed the likes of Google and General Electric. I only recently bought my first Apple product and thought it was good enough to look at buying Apple stock. I didn’t do it because it had gone up so much (was approaching $200 at the time) that I thought it just had to drop a bit first. This is just one way to measure how right their products are..

So, it doesn’t matter if iPad sucks in some people’s mind. That is irrelevant as no product captures 100% of the consumers. iPad does fill a need in the market.. a popular need. It is doing well enough to satisfy both Apple and millions of consumers. Apple would be nuts to change their ways at this point. Most of the negative comments in this forum are very naïve. I’m sure Apple, through forums, focus groups and other means, will decide on good enhancements to add into future models. Your inputs to forums should intelligently suggest what changes you would like to see and why.

  162. Aesthetically it looks clunky and dumb. Not very sexy at all.

  163. Anonymous says: April 9, 2010 at 7:30 pm

This article is totally true, a group of us gathered just before it came out to discuss how crappy it would be. It comes out next day, it’s worse than we imagined.

Seriously, stick with trying to get away from Apple regarding there tablet/pocket devices, excluding sole iPod devices.

  164. I totally like how many people, when discussing Apple and its products, are basically going “YOU’RE STUPID” “NO YOU”. Which is to say, not at all.

Personally, my main beef with Apple is that it’s not catering to customers and potentials, as is business-like, it’s telling its fans “here’s what we feel like giving you – now be happy about it.” Closed ecosystems and the fact that I couldn’t choose my internet provider would make me feel like I am serving my product (and its authors), not the other way around. Am I mistaken when I say it should be the other way around?

Because I think I shouldn’t be forced to pay money for a product which I’m only half pleased with. I do not and will never own an iPhone. Any phone that costs a shitload of money better have every other option every other advanced phone out there has. (IMO, iPods are slightly better, in that they’re nifty to use and have large storage capacities, so they fulfill their purpose nicely (still don’t own one))

My main compy machine is a hardy little Lenovo netbook (enough for me) and I will NEVER ever buy a device aimed at media consumption and networking which ties my hands when it comes to the applications I want to use and is so damn pricy. There are other, much better, MUCH cheaper options out there than Apple when it comes to certain products. Some stuff, yes, they do well. Why do consumers insist on using inferior devices and paying twice, thrice as much than for better products?

  165. Forget Apple. Stick with buying REAL computers.

  166. Jason Watson says: April 11, 2010 at 9:30 pm

basically the iMaxi is a idiot-proof device for the non tech saavy out there, anyone (non apple/steve jobs fanboy/girls) with a half spoonful of tech ability would wind up wanting to smash it within a week due to its stupid typical neutered abilities, made that way so apehole can charge extra for everything and keep people chained to their proprietary apps, etc. No thanks Steve Jobs, I’ll spend LESS on a sweet laptop with way more ability, bigger screen and more storage. This thing is just a straight cash in on the iphones rep, it does not one thing revolutionary to forward the tech in the industry like the iphone did. I love my iphone but I’m not a blind apple fanboy either. These days they could spit polish a turd and people would line up at 5am to buy it ‘ cause it would have the shiny apple logo next to some undigested corn kernels. And dont give me this ‘it has a purpose/ its great for some people’ crap, regular mobile computers are so idiot proof now even my 82 year old grandma has one and loves MULTITASKING on it. This thing is a waste of intelligence and creativity, it would be nice if it could have at least reasonably advanced the market a bit. Ah well….

Is your iPon not protecting you on your heavy flow days? Apple introduces: The iPad! Now, you can ride a horse or go biking and not have to worry!

  168. I have to disagree with two of your points ( and I’m not even sure I want one yet)

First, I personally would rather have a 4:3 aspect ratio and bars above and below hd movies as I personally would use this device more as a book/magazine/web reader and look at movies as a bonus. I can’t see a 16:9 screen being a comfortable “kindle” type device.

Second, I’ve never experienced headaches from extended reading sessions in front of my PC, so I seriously doubt that would be an issue with the iPad.

My top two issues would be the lack of multitasking and the lack of flash support. Those two just prove to me that Steve Jobs has no clue what the vast majority of us want.

  169. I think the ipad is going to crash and burn. It has no market except fanboys AFAIK.

It lacks the most important functionality of an e-reader: an e-ink or similar technology screen.

And it lacks the most important functionas of a netbook: multitasking and application freedom.

So it will be an inadequate substitute for either. And for the price you can buy both an awesome netbook (also with 10 hour battery life), and an e-reader. So why would I bother with this limited piece of crap that is the iPad?

And to hear that it has no USB! Well that is just ridiculous. I mean comeon, what decade is this?

  170. i dont have an ipad but really you critizes to much ok then, lets see you make a better one :D

  171. Whatever you say, it’s not gonna change my point of view that I think the iPad is probably the most innovative and intuitive product ever made. If what you’re saying that you believe in is correct, then I guess you can go for the hp slate since you seem to hate Apple so much lawl.

  172. will the ipad be updated like all the iphones and itouch with the generations 1G 3Gs blahhh??? if so well fuck it.

  173. I really dislike band wagons.

    3. Why the hell would you need a camera on a ipad, go get a cell phone or something
    4. There’s video out
    5. I have a bluetooth keyboard that works just fine
    6. For those with the “oh its just a big ipod” stfu, thats like hating on a big screen tv because you already have a 15in
    7. And seriously, $30 for usb is mafia-style? GTFOH
    8. And ohhhh noooo awwww it hurts my eyes to read, how about adjust the friggin screen genius.

I’m done with this. Ipad is awesome, haters are homo,
    Cidy

  175. Let me start off by stating that I am a learning computer security analyst and pen tester (security penetration tester). In regular speech, an avid hacker. It is to my understanding that the iPad is absolutely not intended for people like myself or other computer savvy techs. It is targeted towards people who do not like computers and do not have even a thought of delving into the more complex side of things. Simply stated, the iPad is a horrible investment with no use at all to a tech guy. We can’t hardly use it for anything other than a cutting board. Then again, it would wobble… Great for your average joe, not so great for all the exploiters.

  176. Jay Cidy… “Boo hoo my eyes hurt?” Are you a moron? I bet you have no idea how many cases of partial blindness, acute nearsightedness, macular degeneration and other debilitating optic diseases come from staring at screens.

    Read a damn book fool.

  177. Jay Cidy says: May 8, 2010 at 11:17 pm

So..ADJUST THE SCREEN. No, I don’t know the exact number of computer screen related eye deseases and no, I don’t read books often. I play video games and watch an HD television. And I stare at a computer screen for 8hrs a day at work…while surfing the web on my Ipad during idle times and my eyes are just fine.

However, if you can’t look at a computer screen without going friggin blind then yea, the ipad is obviosly not for you. Perhaps you should be reading a book at a retirement home or something.

  178. The IPad suks because is only for fun purposes, is not intended to replace netbooks or laptops, so what?, i need to carry my laptop for work and my ipad for fun???, for what? if i can do fun with my laptop, by the way, iPad sucks for reading books.

  179. Too right says: May 18, 2010 at 4:10 am

I agree.. Apple sucks.. And only people with no brains would buy it.. It is crapadelic..

  180. Sebastien,

I agree with you. This is why the iPad sucks. All those 16 reasons are HUGE flaws in the iPad.

  181. IMHO ranting:

For me the ipad not having a SD card reader built in was a major let down.

To prove my point please note the current shortage of the ipad SD card adapter. 2 to 3 week lead time. 3X Price mark up on Amazon. It would have cost Apple 1$ per ipad to include and they would have upped the price by $10, but it would have been worth it to me.

Maybe selling the add-on meant more profit, while lowering the unit cost of the ipad. Ok, they want ot increase their profit margin over giving us what we need.

Next mistake IMHO is the absence of a USB port. That is just plain stupid. The keyboard dock adapter doesn’t even have one.

Maybe Apple is leaving the door open for a third party company to make and sell a docking station that is superior to Apple’s. One that will support the ipad better by providing a wider base and support.

To make my point about the SD and USB ports, take a look at all the iPad copy cats coming out on the market, nearly all of them have both a SD reader and USB port, most even have a cheesy built in camera.

The ipad clones do not lock users to a single cell phone carrier, by allowing a external cell phone adapter to mate to the usb port. Like laptop users, the end user can use any cell phone provider.

Could that be the reason Apple dropped the USB port on the ipad? To keep the ipad user locked into AT&T.

I give Apple credit for being first with a lot of “thinking out of the box” ideas, but nearly all their products coral the consumer with built in limitations. And they ban what they think could cause them trouble. (iSlam app for example)

Keeping consumers and app developers inside the Apple virtual box is border on a text book dictatorship.

Over time Apple always loses in the end to the cheaper clones that provide want people want. For example, look at the history of the mac vs PC, or the laptop industry that Apple kicked off. Apple never looks to itself as the problem.

Oh well. Apple does what they want, they toss the dice and gamble with their future with each new product they introduce. They can afford a few misses here and there, because of the loyal Apple consumer base. (aka cult)

Let’s face it, Apple survives because of it’s marketing spin doctors. They could sell us anything, no matter how high the cost or how low the functionality and make us fell happy about owning the product.

Is that it? They sell us the sizzle and not the bacon. They sell us their idea of happiness.

    d2f

It doesn’t have E-ink to read, like Kindle
    Can It Print
Restrictions On How You Get Files

  185. Once again we see that apple has brought out an inferior product that caters to people that want to look cool in starbucks! This has got to be the most limited portable device available in its size,at&t only(worst provider on the planet and huge ripoff). And i cant wait to see how much its gonna cost the suckers that buy it to customize it to taste i.e. the apps are extremely inflated pricing. and best of all no flash support…whos lame ass idea was that,oh yah Steve “lameass” jobs.

The price is too high here in Philippines. It cost around P36000 to P42000 or $770 to $900.

  190. Shall we make a deal? Remove all the software parts like ‘no multitasking’. Because things like that can be solved. However, the hardware -dislikes are OK.

  191. The Notion Ink Adam is going to be a lot better than the ipad.

  192. you have 3 valid points…

    No Flash, really does suck!

No Multi-tasking has me longing for an Android based Tablet!

No USB and for those that aren’t thinking about this, the USB us for connecting devices to the iPad!

As somebody who owns one I can tell you it isn’t perfect and Apple screwed the pooch on their iWork apps (two out of 3 don’t support Exporting to MS Office format).

    As for the rest,

there is a VGA connector for 720P out to your TV…

there is a Blue Tooth Camera that does seem to work with it…

there is a card reader that can be used with the device for uploading stuff to the unit…

Oh and there is a physical Keyboard as well (No Landscape Orientation Really Sucks)…

The down side of all these things, they all cost between $50 and $70 which means that your device price just jumped through the roof!!!

Now as for those who dismiss it as just an ipod touch, that is inaccurate, there is no ipod touch with this powerful a CPU or Graphics Chip let alone a 1024×768 screen resolution.

So I guess most probably really want to know what it is good for… Well, honestly, it has some features that to me turn it into a great device for regular school work… It isn’t really any more capable than a Netbook but some of the Apps are better organized for school work and such…

I guess what I’m trying to say is that it works great as a Personal Organizer and for doing some Home Work or Taking Class Notes with but overall, it is just a prettier package for the old Palm Pilot Concept (remember that big old keyboard with that little old Palm III? Well, now it is a little keyboard with a big old iPad.

No let me make this clear as well, this is the only Apple Device I own and if there were Android Tablets worth owning right now I wouldn’t even have this puppy right now because… While it is entertaining it isn’t revolutionary or ground breaking…

Oh but one feature I do feel deserves noting is that the Device is capable of Stereoscopic Output so it is 3D Capable if they decide to release some Glasses for the unit.

  193. hey how are you guys i think that he,s totaly wrong about the ipad its a very lovely tablet and helpfull for kids in the future :P too .so we should all counsider what apple made for us to play listen and enjoy every thing about it …………..

A lot of websites don’t load right or won’t open at all and not to mention the little blue dice thing that comes up on the screen where the info I wanted should be. I like some of the things about the iPad and I don’t need a warehouse of memory for my use, but without flash, I don’t want the iPad. No Adobe Flash Player, so what? It still has YouTube. Want to watch videos on Hulu? Just buy the app. Want to play your silly Farmville? There’s an app for that too.
Hate the name? Get over your nasty perverted mind for goodness sake!! The name actually brings attention to the public and they remember it. I found out about the iPad because friends on Facebook were laughing about it and I started to wonder what this was, so I looked it up, and I fell in love with it. After I watched a video about it I knew it had to be so extremely expensive considering Apple. But when I saw the lowest price was only $500, I knew I would be able to afford it, I was actually thinking of getting a netbook, SO GLAD I DIDN’T!!! My friend has one and it’s so tiny and the keys are all squished, just didn’t seem enjoyable.
So the memory isn’t that much. But considering that I have about 1000 songs on my little Nano, I realized, half the songs I don’t even listen to or like anymore. When I organized my songs to go onto my iPad, it was only 500 that I had chosen. And it makes it that much more enjoyable on the iPod part of my iPad because I’m not scrolling through all the crappy songs I ignore.
The black frame is actually a good thing if you’re watching a movie, because then you can pick it up, move it around, or even hold it without covering up the action happening in the movie.
THE IPAD IS BEAUTIFUL, SO SHUT UP. Yes that may be immature, but it’s my honest opinion.

I could go on and on for how wrong most of these are. My main point, don’t judge something that you haven’t even purchased, you won’t know the full story. Many of the things you stated are incorrect or doesn’t even matter. The rest will surely be fixed in the next iPad generation. But honestly I love my iPad and I strongly recommend it to those with an open mind, not the ones already with a fixed opinion about how “Oh, it’s just a giant iPod touch…” that really annoys me.

  208. It’s basically just a giant iPod Touch. They left out so many good features. That Android Tab will be so much better.
