GeoHot Working on Unlocking iPhone Baseband 05.11.07 for a $10,000 Bounty
GeoHot, the little genius behind BlackRa1n is back at work and is reportedly working on an unlock for baseband 05.11.07. Baseband 05.11.07 is the latest baseband version of the iPhone OS 3.1.2 which is not unlockable for the time being.
The Dev Team has been working on unlocking 05.11.07 for a while without much success so let’s hope GeoHot will be a bit more lucky…
There is something that ticks me though. At first GeoHot said he would not work on an unlock for 05.11.07. Fastforward 24 hours later and GeoHot changed his mind when he was offered $10,000 by Jody Sanders to develop an unlock for the latest iPhone OS.
For those of you who don’t know Jody Sanders, he’s some asshole from the UK selling the jailbreaks and unlocks developed by the Dev Team to people who don’t know better. Yes, this guy sells jailbreaks and unlocks people can get for free. The Dev Team wrote about him a few months ago and said:

We specifically restrict the commercial use of our software, and yellowsn0w is included in these restrictions. This dodgy geezer is selling our software to you at a bargain £19.99 he says:-
So Jody Sanders offered $10,000 to GeoHot to sponsor an unlock by GeoHot and I think this is really wrong. It is not wrong to get paid for your hard work. It is actually a good thing to do. I don’t work for free and I don’t expect others to do it either.
What I think is wrong is that GeoHot will be working for Sanders, a scammer who’s been ripping people off for a while. As if it wasn’t enough, GeoHot is getting all cocky about it and pretends he can find an exploit in 24 hours.
Yesterday I put GeoHot on the spot by asking him on Twitter why he changed his mind:

I’m not a big fan of GeoHot. He sure is a genius but the kid is way too cocky, pretentious and has no ethic. So much for the community! The Dev Team is most likely really pissed at him too but can’t really raise their voice because they need his genius…

Almost two days it looks as if geohot is making some progress according to his Twitter post. We shall wait and see. I hope so still rocking a itouch right now.
Ok…. so at least this ‘Jody Sanders’ guy is actually paying someone to develop a hack for him… that is a step in the right direction.
Hopefully the rest of the community will still be able to benefit from it.
Probably not popular opinion, but while I don’t agree with him working for a scammer, how many people used blackra1n to jailbreak and didn’t donate to Geohot? What Geohot sees (in his young – mind you – mind) is an opportunity to make money. Think about it… at 18 10 grand is a lot of money! He’s working hard to give to the community – I appreciate that, but at the same time he can capitalize on the possibility of making real guaranteed money rather than relying on donations. Donations that I’m betting more than 90% of the users of Blackra1n didn’t contribute. I don’t like who he is allegedly “working for” but I can understand his mindset. It must be time-consuming to develop these hacks and why not get paid for it if you can? I agree he is a little cocky – but he’s 18 and has accomplished things that others have tried and tried. He’s entitled to a certain degree of cockiness

maybe those who pay to get their iphone jailbroken do not have the time and the skills to jailbreak their own… (it was hard for me, it took me 3 days of reading and trial and error to finally jaibreak mine)

I agree with you about the fact that GeoHot is a little bit pretentious, and he told everybody that he could find an exploit in 24h, what he didn’t manage…
BUT we don’t have to be too unfair with him. For months everybody was begging him to work on an unlock for the baseband 05.11.07, and today we’re discussing the reasons why he is doing it.
I really understand that the call of money is sometimes stronger than principles and if you want my opinion i think he won’t be paid by this scammer.
By the way, what do you think of ColdSn0w who affirms on Tweeter that he already owns a well advanced solution to unlock the Iphone 3GS with 3.1+ firmware ??

People already know what I think. GEO is a SCAMMER, plain and simple. Add liar to the list as he clearly said he was not CAN NOT do the unlock and even tweeted telling people to stop asking him because NO NO NO..He CANt..He WONT…..
Funny how as soon as he got the $10k bounty, he claimed he would do it in aday and then claimed he wanted to do it all along and it wasnt about the money.

Furthermore, people can call him a genius if they want…geniuses can be naive idiots and liars just the same. I have some other adjecyives to describe him and his actions, but will reserve those for now.
The FACTS are very simple….The guy SOLICITED for donations to do BR. He took peoples money and bricked god knows how many devices and caused serious issues for many, many people that still have not gotten these issues resolved. Why? because GEO will not respond to the many who used BR and are now BRICKED!! He does not care if you have a bricked device. he does not care if his BUGGIEST JB EVER has caused great harm to many.
The guy put out UNTESTED SOFTWARE that harmed MANY and then IGNORED the issues as he has done in the past.
People using BR or his soon to be coming unlock need to be aware that you are taking a huge risk.
Your device may be working now, but there is a HUGE chance that your currently working device will not be working one day when you go to turn it on or wake it from sleep mode. Furthermore, add in the fact he left HUGE HOLES in the BR exploit and you can now expect that one day when plugging in to itunes, it will BRICK YOUR DEVICE, send the data to apple and void any warranty you may have, leaving you with no warranty, a dead device and try asking apple for help when their records show your serial number proves you MODIFIED your device. Apple aint stupid and GEO left a huge hole in this exploit that apple will use against those that that used his exploit.
Worse though is due to the very sloppy and buggy work GEO did and the huge holes he put in BR, youyr device is now EASILY HACKABLE. So, to those that have personal info on their device, passwords and etc, can look forward to a major nightmare as using your device after the use of BR leaves you in the same state as if you were running a PC with no firewalls or security features and advertised this fact (trust me, the hackers dont need much info..a simple blog post can lead them right to your device) to the world. Even if nobody knows you used BR, you are still at a very high risk of being hacked, as the holes left make it very easy for hackers to find hackable devices and then hack them…….
GEO is a NAIVE KID and this is going to be a very rough lesson for him. he talks about his stellar legal team, but not even they will be able to get him out of these troubles that he brought on 100% himself.
Good luck GEO. IMO, you are going to need it and I feel very bad for all those that are currently screwed due to him and those who are not now, but will be soon enough.

Look at craigslist list. Tons of people selling jailbreaks and unlocks. I charge too. I mean, if you can unlock your own phone free, good. If you want me to do it for you, taking up my time, it’s going to cost you money. Money for my time. That’s not a scam

I also agree with some of your points.
1st, I suspect he got plenty in donations.
I would not expect anybody to work for free. In fact, it would not bother me one but if he charged 5 times that amount.
However, if you solicit $$’s or get paid to do something, you need to get it right without harming others.
Would you pay your auto mechanic for a Trany Rebuild only to have the new transmission not work and also causes you harm?
Pick out any scenario. People deserve to be paid for their work, but if you are paid to do a job, the job needs to be done right. If you are paid and pooch screw the job, you should ‘make it right’.
How would it feel to pay your Mechanic in full, have serious issues that could lead to even more serious issues and possible dangers and then have your mechanic ignore you while he starts work on his next trany rebuild, while your car sits dead in the road or worse?
I’ve also stated my displeasure with his obvious lies. Since I have already discussed this, I will try and keep it short.
The guy has ignored all issues BR has caused leaving many royally screwed and others who will likely be screwed, they just dont know it yet(see my previous posts as to why this is a likely scenario).
He made it very clear that he wanted people to stop asking if he was working on an unlock. he clearly stated he wont do it…he even said he CANT do it as he could not replicate something.
A day later when he asked for the $10k bounty to be made legit he suddenly claimed he could do it and would do it ‘in about a day’.
How does one go from going out of his way to tell everybody he wont and cant do it to a day later saying “It’s not the $$, I ALWAYS WANTED TO DO IT”?
Just remember people, Trust needs to be earned.

Many are waiting for the same. What you must ask yourself is do you want a safe and reliable unlock or one that bricks your device and/or causes you great personal harm/grief?
The DEV T have always been the best and most reliable.
I am dismayed that they seem to be ignoring PC users and focusing on mac users, but they are still the best and most reliable.
I will await something that I know works and is coming from a reliable source.
I will not put any of my devices in danger or myself, by using anything created by GEO. We know much more today then we did 1 week ago.
In fact, even if BR did work for me, knowing what I now know, I would take it off my device immediately and live with stock device(s) until a safe and reliable exploit is released by those who can be trusted.

Okay so let me get this staright, I just looked on Jody’s website and it said that all rights go to his company or whatever so does this mean that when geohot hacks the basband for the unlock the only way to get this unlock is to go through that website where they charge out of the ass for it or will geohot set it up like he did for BR? This is gonna be gay if we have to pay for something to that UK punk for something that usually is free from him! Anyone know anything on how it’ll work???

Hey I’m all for this guy getting paid and what not but its wrong to work with a guy who makes people like me(I hack iPhones and Touches as well as other stuff for people on my college campus) look like fakes because to an average joe free things might seem like a scam. Im a college kid who charges people like 5 bucks for guaranteed work that most people are afraid of or skeptical about. I’m also a little disappointed that geohot wasn’t willing to work on this thing until he was offered 10K. If I where him and I had the genius to unlock the new baseband I would do this for free to help out all the people who accidently locked their phones like a friend of mine did.
Props to GeoHot if he gets this done.
I think they both are doing a very smart thing (Geohot and the guy from UK). He is not a scammer or anything. It is just the world that we live in. If he gets a chance to make money on people who can’t find any information about jailbreaking/unlocking their iphone, and they are ready to pay for it, why not? I really respect everybody who is voulanteering with all that hard work, and realising their projects to public, but when you are doing your work and getting paid for it, it feels much better. So don’t blame the UK guy for scamming, and don’t blame Geohot, he is doing the right thing. I bet he has his own life, and it’s completely understandable why he changed his mind and decided to start working on an unlock.

I do understand people who may be upset about the fact that Geohot works for that scammer. That Jody guy is probably going to make profit if Geohot comes out with the unlock. I live in Brazil and down here if you can not jailbreak your iphone your self, you will have to pay to somebody to do this, because everybody who knows how to do it, will charge for this, even using Pwnage tool and others softwares that they did not created, but they use it anyway.
So, I believe in most of countries has people who are doing this, charging people who has lots of money and wants to get an unlock iPhone because is cool… there are thousand of Jodys out there, at least each one of us know one people who does it, everyone who is reading this, knows that is true.
But I Think there is something unexplained on this situation.
I dont believe the HotGeo is working for this guy, not for the money I think, but I believe that is a great challenge that He wants to win, do what nobody did until now and after all say to the world that I made it.

I have nothing against what he is doing. But why waste your time. Eeryone is wiring for an unlock when just get an android phone or wm phone and never have to deal with the dictatorship of apple again. Now don’t get me wrong apple has some great products but it seems everyone must have an iPhone or their going to die. The new verizon droid looks like an amazing phone. Best of all it uses java, no need to learn an entire new language for one device. And to even get your
app threw the app store guys who turn it down over all the little things but let pornographic apps threw. It’s almost as if apple is taking bribes.

Help, I used BlackRa1n about 2 weeks ago to jailbreak to 3.1.2. And it worked fine until one day it says I have no wifi and can’t connect, next I can’t use my lockscreen password because I can’t set one, and finally I can’t access my mail because the settings will not save my passwords. Can anybody help?

IMO, the above posters problems are pretty minor compared to the problems most will have that used BR. They just dont know it yet and wont, like this person, until it is too late.

Not good imo. But at least they are smart enough to steal DEVS exploits and not GEO’s. Or are they stealing geo’s stuff as well?
That would be comical. Steal exploits that GEO devoloped and re-sell them, which is in effect selling/collecting money for software that will brick most devices it is used on (if not right away, likely it will soon enough, like others have already started reporting) as well as putting the persons personal info, apple warranty, apple support and etc, in jeopordy.

Geohot worked extremely hard on blackra1n, the latest jailbreak, and asked for donations. I don’t even think he made enough for an iPod touch. In my opinion, the community is a bunch of fickle freetards, who knock EVERYONE unless they release a PERFECT product for nothing just so they can install pirated apps. Well its thanks to us that the community will be getting a free unlock, I don’t believe anyone was working on it until we offered the bounty?

THis is not an insult as I must assume english is not your native language. Quite hard to understand what you are saying but I will try nonethless to answer.
Yes, I have worked for free. Not full time or anything like that, but if I can help others without charging, I will attempt to do so. On the flip side, it is expected that if you work, you get paid and I certainly have no problem with that.
I disagree about GEO. Whose software had bricked all of these devices? Apples or GEO? Far as I know GEO developed BR, while asking for and taking donations, but providing zero support for the many bugs and issues BR caused. The only thing APPLE has to do with Blackra1n and the upcoming blacksn0w is they will have the code to brick devices using it since GEO left the exploit wide open.
If GEO put out a working and reliable exploit and provided support for all the many bugs he left in there (the guy readily admits he is lazy and prefers the easy way and has said many times he will not provide support as well), then I would agree he should be paid if that is what he wants.
But considering you are paying somebody to brick your device, or worse, I think he should be the one paying all the people BR screwed. And as we have already seen, some people who used BR and said it worked great are now finding their devices bricked and they are wondering why considering they didnt do anything other then go to sleep, wake up, go to wake up device and see it is suddenly bricked.
Furthermore, it is already known that APPLE is exploiting GEO’s exploits and will brick devices itself as well.
IMO, using BR is a no win situation with a bricked device being the most minor issue people will face. If you are all wigged out because your device is now bricked or if it becomes bricked in the days/weeks ahead, consider yourself lucky as it has been thoroughly explained what some of the more serious issues are that people may encounter.
However, I dont expect anybody to listen to me. Make your own decisions and roll the dice if you choose.
There is enough factual info available for people to use and make an educated decision/choice. if people choose to ignore the facts, that is their perrogative, of course.

The FACTS, not my opinion, are very clear. BR was a complete and total disaster for many.
All the people filling up the blogs and forums talking about the many issues BR has caused are not figments of your imagination. They are real people who were screwed by BR.
If all you people want to post how wonderful GEO is, then go right ahead. That is your choice. However, dont dare tell others that they cannot post their own opinions or experiences as well.
If you got bricked or worse by BR, I doubt you would be praising GEO as you are.

The fact of the matter is, and this is widely known, BR was a major failure that may have worked for some, but caused serious issues for just as many as those it worked for. And we are now seeing some who first said BR worked great now posting that suddenly their device is bricked and they dont know why.
I fully expect more and more devices to be bricked as the hours/days/weeks pass by.
Has anybody here even bothered to break BR down and do a thorough inventory/break down of the coding?
If you did or know somebody who has, then you are aware of the huge holes and very sloppy codding that was done. If you haven’t you will likely be happier if you are not aware.
The dangers in using this software are very real.
But as I said, nobody should listen to me. Make your own decision and roll the dice if you wish.

However, as I also said, if you are sitting here praising GEO and are thrilled with BR and are ragging on others that got screwed by BR, and you wake up one day with abricked device, you are going to look awfully silly posting and asking for help or questioning others as to ‘what could have happened’.

Well, the good news is that GeoHot has found an exploit and manage to unlock an iPhone running the 5.11.07 baseband.

Here in Belgium, the law does not allow Apple to lock iPhone on one carrier.
So they are sold factory unlock!
I don’t understand why Apple is wasting so much time and effort in locking their device as I’m sure they could sell much more if it was factory unlocked!?

People why you argue if this guy in uk charge for something that is free or geohot. This is simple charging someone for a job it’s how its done in life. for example you come home very drunk and notice that your light bulb its not working or molten and you are so drunk you cant change it, if you call a electrician and go to your house and change the bulb he is gonna charge you… anyone can change a bulb and if you have the new bulb in your house it’s free. But doing something that other one could do free doesn’t mean that you would do it for free. You charge not for what are you doing.. you charge for the service… With that said geohot can do whatever he wants and sanders can charge for his service what he shouldn’t do is tell people that the software he was ho invent it or that this is only something he can do, if people agree to pay for something they can do but are to busy or doesnt understand that’s Life!!!!
I don’t think Geo Hotz is cocky, even if he is, no one cares. I think he has the absolute right to be cocky. Dev Team kicked him out because Dev Team is too slow for him to progress.
I don’t mind paying a bit money for the iPhone unlock, Geo Hotz is like anyone else, need to make money to survive, or to have a better life.

I think that, like most people, you missed the point of this post. The point is not that he’s getting paid. The point is that he’s getting paid by someone who has been stealing from the Dev Team and illegally selling their jailbreak/unlock. Jodie Sanders is not your friendly neighbor charging you $10 to jailbreak (this is ok). Jodie Sanders just sells you a copy of PwnageTool or RedSn0w while you can get it for free anywhere else. Might be hard to understand because it’s software related. But replace the software by a car for example. Now let’s say Jodie Sanders sells stolen cars and he’s hiring someone to steal a car (GeoHot). Does that sound right? Of course not.
Now about the money thing. If you had read my post entirely, you would have noticed that I said the following: “It is not wrong to get paid for your hard work. It is actually a good thing to do. I don’t work for free and I don’t expect others to do it either.”
See, I think it’s cool to get paid for what you do. The point is you have to be careful of who you work for because that might send the wrong message to the rest of the community.

So, all the people blogging that BR2 also did not work or caused serious issues is not factual or current?
Do you think these people are figments of our imagination?
Do you think there is 1 person using hundreds of aliases to post?
Please explain why blogs and forums are filled with MANY people saying both BR1 and BR2 was a disaster for them?
All in recent days, which to me, seems pretty ‘current’.
I have my facts straight. Apparentely others dont or simply confuse facts with fiction or dont care to know the difference or care to actually research anything to see the ‘true and current facts’.
The very author of this blog has even commented about the many issues with BR, the fact he didnt like how GEO handled his quick turn around explanation as well as the fact that even he will wait for DEV to avoid any possible issues with GEOs stuff after seeing the many others with issues.
I really would like to suggest 1 thing. Do whatever you as an individual wishes to do. But flaming me, looking for a response is a pure waste of bandwidth. I must assume people have better things to do then read this type of drivel.
To make everybody happy, how is this.

I think GEO’s exploits are awesome and 100% safe to use.
I hope everybody uses his exploits and I hope everybody donates a big fat chunk of cash to him as he desrves every penny.

I fail to see why anybody puts such credence in to what a poster on a blog has to say. Whether I say GEO is great or he sucks is irrelevant. Do people really take advice from posters on a blog they do not know?
God gave everybody a brain. I would certainly hope people use their brains to make their own educated decisions. Taking advice, no matter what the advice is, from a stranger on a blog is not wise. If I say GEO sucks, you would be fools to believe me. If I say GEO is Awesome, you would be fools to believe me.

Does this mean if I have Bootloader Version 5.9 with 05.11.07 I will be able to downgrade my boot loader to version 4.6 if I wanted to change the IMEI?

How come everybody is moaning at Geo and that UK dude? iPhone is a nice device but apple is the one making all the problems here,and we all agreed by purchasing their device to have a life of jailbreaking and unlocking and shit. And the Uk dude is just seling it to the people who dont know how to do it themselves which is not a bad thing. I understand the people that love apple phones,i know i do,that they are angry that their phones dont work but it is not Geos fault,he is just a boy genius,not obligated to do anything. At least you UK and US bastards can get a contract,There is a million and a half iPhone users all over the world that dont even get contracts in their country,how about that? I dont see them here trashing Geo and others. Why? Because we appreciate anyone who takes from their time to do something for us and no matter the motive,money or whatever. So, will he hide the developments he makes? Will he not make a publicly available exploit/patch? Unless all of these are true, I have no reason to complain.
In fact, I applaud his financial wisdom. Get 10k for doing something that (I’m sure) he’d eventually do, anyway? I really can’t see how anyone sees this as traitorous; someone offered him a lot of money to do something and he bit the bait. Honestly, I think you’re just pissed that someone didn’t hand you 10k and said, “Find a hole for me”.
If anything, this whole situation is a double-edged sword; but a sword that will most definitely help us in the long run. Someone, it doesn’t matter if he’s a sheister or not, is willing to give a hacker 10k in order to unlock a baseband that is in a great many of phones. Do you not read teh Internets? How many things stay hidden online?
Grow up and look at the bigger picture: we’re getting an unlock on bb 05.11.07.
