GeoHot came up yesterday with an updated version of BlackRa1n called BlackRa1n RC2. This new release supposedly fixes a bunch of issues that some of you may have encountered, especially while trying to jailbreak an iPhone 3G.
This step-by-step guide and tutorial will show you how to use BlackRa1n RC2 to jailbreak your iPhone or iPod Touch, either on a Mac or a PC. This works for all iDevices, except for the iPod Touch 3G. This tutorial was made using an iPhone 3GS but again, it should work on all devices except the iPT3G.
I already wrote a BlackRa1n tutorial and the steps are identical but a few people emailed me or tweeted me asking to write a tutorial for BlackRa1n RC2.
Before we start, you have to understand that BlackRa1n is a jailbreak and jailbreak only. BlackRa1n will not unlock your iPhone. As a matter of fact, if you want to unlock your iPhone, do not use BlackRa1n as it will update the baseband and make it impossible to unlock for the time being.
If you want to unlock your iPhone, I suggest you use PwnageTool. PwnageTool will help you create a custom IPSW that won’t update your baseband, thus allow you to unlock using UltraSn0w.
How to jailbreak your iPhone with BlackRa1n RC2:
Step 1: Update iTunes to the latest version available and reboot your computer.
Step 2: Download BlackRa1n RC2 from our iPhone downloads page and install it, then reboot your computer.
Step 3: Plug your iPhone in your computer and launch BlackRa1n RC2. Click on “make it ra1n”.
Step 4: Your iPhone will enter recovery mode. The regular recovery mode image on your iPhone will be replaced by a picture of GeoHot (same as image above).
Step 5: BlackRa1n will run on your iPhone and then it will reboot.
A pop up will show up asking you to donate. If you successfully jailbreak your iPhone, I suggest you send $5 or $10 to GeoHot.
Step 6: Once your iPhone reboots, you will have a new icon on your springboard. This is BlackRa1n. Now make sure you have internet connection and launch BlackRa1n on your iPhone.
Step 7: Choose what installer applications you want to install on your iPhone and then tap “Install”. I suggest only installing Cydia but you may install them all if you want to.
BlackRa1n will download and install the selected applications.
Step 8: Once done installing, your iPhone will respring and you should see your installer app on your springboard.
Step 9: Once your installer app (Cydia in our case) is installed. You can safely uninstall BlackRa1n by launching the app and selecting “uninstall balckra1n”.
Step 10: Reboot your iPhone. You’re done!

However, I assure you that both these versions are buggier then hell. Again, you are lucky. Many others have tried everything under the sun and no luck or a very buggy device when done.
The widespread issues with this ‘rushed to market exploit with no testing’ is well known.
The blogs are filled with as many or more people that were screwed by using this b.s jb then there are for people such as you who got it to work without a hitch.
The bottom line is this software was rushed to market, was not thoroughly tested, is filled with more bugs then an insect convention and the developer is 100% ignoring the issues and has zero support for the many effected people/devices after soliciting $$’s and is now claiming to have an unlock ready in about a day after somebody put up a $10,000 bounty. Funny how he said he couldn’t do the unlock up until he saw the $$$signs. I wouldn’t trust that unlock if you paid me. It will be just like br rc1&2. It will work for some, turn many other phones into bricks while others will get a semi-working, buggy unlock that they will have constant issues with after spending 350 hours and trying 75 different ‘tricks’ posted by other users to get a semi working phone.
Unlock is far more important then a jb. People can live without themes, apps and etc, but who can afford to have a phone that may have many serious issues??? No way would I entrust my phone to an unlock developed by this so called genius. Look at EVERY exploit he has put out since 4 years ago or so. Every one had issues and he ‘abandoned’ each one with zero support.
He has yet to put out something that works good with very few bugs (reds0w comes to kind from deb team) and then have support. He asks for donations (dev team dies not),takes his money, puts out crap, and runs for the hills.
Good luck to all that try any if his exploits. If reading the many blogs filled with people with bricked devices are not proof enough then roll your dice and hope ta get lucky. If ya do, don’t be surprised if you wake up one day and your working unlocked/jb’d phone/touch is suddenly dead.
His software/exploits cannot be trusted. Nor can he be trusted to back up or support his exploits, as history has so aptly proven.

I tried the original Blackra1n with a brick as a result but managed to fix i was a Lil scared of trying gain with RC2 but all seems fine for now ,

Awesome I was away from my desktop all weekend and failed with RC1 for hours. My laptop is running Vista 64 bit and I have a 2g Ipod touch 8gb (MB model) and it would not work. Just ran RC2 on my desktop running xp and it worked first try. I even tried RC2 on my laptop earlier with no luck several times.
I am going to blame the problems on vista.
iPhone 3G – didnt work..
I did the blackrain RC1 on a month old 3gs, works great. Except i get an error in cydia cause I installed both cydia, rock and icy through the blackrain app that appeared on my phone after jailbreaking…this RC2 version should fix this – but will it swipe/delete all my installed apps and configurations if I use the blackrain on top of an already jailbroken phone?
Also, will it automatically give me the 3.1.2 or will it still have the 3.1 as it has currently? (i had to jailbreak cause my iphone died when updating to 3.1.2. via iTunes

Anybody donating to this guy is better off giving their money to charity where it will do some good. Why pay somebody who is actively soliciting for people to send him money when he gets the money, rushes out buggy software that bricks god knows how many devices, only to then watch GEO ignore all issues and all questions asked? Why is he busy responding to people patting him on the back or to those offering him money, while he ignores people who have bricked devices due to BR1??
I hope everybody that BR worked for continues to have a good working JB’d device. However, I do hope this ALBION NUTCASE wakes up one day to a DEAD DEVICE and lets see how fast his attitude changes.

Anybody wonder why the TRUE experts do not have an exploit for unlocking the new BB and why even GEO said he couldnt do it, but the minute he said he would accept $10,000 to do it, he then claimed he could do it in about 1 day?
Phones are critical. They are not itouches. Most can live without an itouch if they have to. How many can live without their phone or how many can live with a phone that is not working properly or one you have to mess with everyday to try to fix the bugs?
What will happen when you think your GEO UNLOCKED phone is working, but you dont get that very important VM from your boss, wife or kid?
What will happen when you have an emergency and your phone wont work?
What will happen if his exploits leave ‘backdoors for others to exploit’?
Dont think somebody can steal your passwords, bank info, identity and etc… by hacking in to your iphone? Think again!
GEO has proven, even going back years, that he cannot put out reliable exploits. Anybody trusting his exploit on their phone is taking a huge chance, imo.

GEO has already been called out by some very well respected people in the industry for accepting $$, putting out BUGGY $HIT and then ignoring the issues. The same people are also calling him out for putting a $10k bounty on the unlock and then claiming he’ll have it done in a day. The Author of this very blog even commented that if his UNLOCK IS AS BAD AS HIS JB, NOT MANY WILL WANT TO USE IT. The reply to that comment by @musclenerd, a very well respected person said “GOOD POINT”!!
If BR was such a total failure and ruined as many devices as it did, anybody is nuts if they send this guy 1 cent or even attempt to use his BUGGY $HIT.

Looks like the ante is being raised. Appears he pissed of some pretty good hackers that are claiming they are going to hack devices that used his exploits to ‘teach him and those that trusted him a valuable lesson’.

Alright, I’m completely new to this. I have the iTouch 3G. Everytime I try this, it erases all the data. I don’t see any Blackra1n icon when all is said and done, and “Set up your iPod” screen shows “set up as a new ipod” or “Restores from back up of . . .” I take it you have to set up as a new ipod? If so how do you get back all the data you had? I would like to jailbreak without losing all my data. Would appreciate any help I can get to resolve this issue.

do a update with iTunes when promoted do a backup. After restore from backup it’s done open blackrain rc2 click run wait 20 seconds and u are done. Install cydia from blackrain logo, and do whatever u please. That’s it. And I sugest u donate 2 or 3 dollars and don’t forget to thank geohot.
Does anyone use exchange with a 3G with firmware 3.1? Heard there were some issues with authentication, or something along those lines that was only supported on the 3GS..

Tried as suggested. Does not work. After restoring from backup, no Blackra1n icon. iPod is fully updated (3.1.2) . . . maybe this is only an issue using a mac?

First version bricked my 3G (16GB) twice. The RC2 version worked the first time. Excellent!
While I am not an iPhone/iPod/Apple developer I am a MS certified Windows developer.
People’s concerns over security are highly valid.
Alot of these types of hacks for devices (or even cracks of softwarez app’s etc) can easily have code that come 6 months from now ends up being used to extract personal information such as bank access, credit card info’s etc. Trojan horses in mobile devices is a completely new horizon. Anyone who reads industry journals in software engineering knows this.
With these new mobile smart devices its just as difficult to hunt down perpatraitors as it is with Windows Trojans and varied malware.
Essentially whats taken advantage of is the “closed nature” of the manufacturer of the devices or operating environments. Apple has a very closed nature aka: trying to lock folks into the App Store. Trying to lock App developers to the Apple Hardware which is essentially a “PC” with specific hardware, aka: OS/X not supporting a variety of hardware configurations.
This type environment is WHY you want Jailbreak your phone, to use things that are not at the App Store.
Would-be hackers see that as a PERFECT environment for them to thrive in.
People say, “Well they’ll get theirs, get caught, what-all… Seldom happens and here’s why.
Even IF authorities decide go after lets say Chia-Pet (just an example) he’ll have two code bases. One that is clean of any trojan/malware hack and one thats not. When accused they come forth with clean code, “See… its not me… must be something else folks are downloading to their jailbroken phone”.
Tis’ also why you’ll never see em’ release the actual source code. No BlackRa1n source code out there for you to download is there? Hacker’s will cite’ lots of reasons and none are valid. Any developer can shoot excuses right down.
“If I release the source code then Apple will examine it and stop future jailbreaks”. Complete Bull. Believe me, it’d take Apple engineers about 15 minutes (probably more like 5) to see how any jailbreak exploits the firmware.
“Others will take my code and make their own”. So what?
However… that does lead to a different legality. If a piece of software your loading up on your phone your paying for, even via a donation, it does not remove liability for a developer. Especially when one considers its a unlicensed hack. In other words, Apple hasnt went, its “ok”. Thus MORE than likely IF or When lots of people would be exploited by such a trojan or malware hack its not the individual that takes action. Its Apple. When the consumer is yelling at Apple saying, “Welp, last Apple iAnything I ever buy because of….” then APPLE can show direct damage and Apple can take legal action IRREGARDLESS of a iAnything Owner’s ACTIONS. Thats the key. Hackers will always cite’ “Welp, the consumer installed it”.
Thats like saying “I went to the auto store and bought a new gas cap. Then because of it my car blew up… and law says its my fault”.
In the case of OS/X which lay under the hood of the iGizmo’s the OWNER of an iAnything does NOT own OS/X, they own a LICENSE to use it on the device.
If ChiaPet makes a jailbreak, essentially “Hacking” that operating environment and are not licensed by Apple as a developer, Apple’s interests are damaged they can indeed go after it.
Lots of these types of things also state a legal disclaimer, “ChiaPet is not libel for the use or misuse of this software”. Incorrect when it comes to hacks that intentionally can be used maliciously or even outside again… accordance with in this case Apple licensing.
No different than say Windows. You dont see say Electronic Arts inc. putting out a application that hacks Windows 7 to avoid activation and selling it or asking for donations for it. You dont see JoeQDeveloper LLC releasing the “Activate Adobe Master Suite CD” for $30 or donation. Its not that he cant write the code, license hacks exist for the “trial edition” of Adobe Master Collection. Its that Adobe would kill him.
Essentially Apple has created an environment where parasites can thrive by limiting you the consumer. Imagine of Microsoft did this, “The only way to get Windows software is through the MS-Store”. There is where the problem lay.
THUS!!!!! Instead of allowing for prospect parasites to do as they do what we NEED to be doing is CONVINCING APPLE to open things up. So we dont need be locked down to the App Store. If a developer wants max exposure, by all means App Store. If not, oh well. No different than if Adobe wants exposure they need have retailers pick up their line-up.
Apple may well move that way irregardless.
Developers are not getting “Rich” via the App Store which has been widely reported in industry rags as well. Most are pretty unhappy not necessarily for the right reasons. Crap software is crap software, “Why isnt anyone paying $8 for my Othello pro game at the App Store?”… Why? Cuz’ its f’n Othello thats why. Assassins Creed, $5… People can tell “Good from bad” when it comes to the software, thats why. Yet… QUALITY software costs money to develop.
Apple should be moving towards RETAIL. So I walk into Staples, there’s a bunch of Mini-SD card applications/games etc that I can purchase. Wella. Money will flow.
We the owners of iGizmo’s need bitch at APPLE and let them KNOW that SHOULD Apple continue to try and “lock us down” to only that which they approve of the guess what? We’ll be dropping our Apple purchases in favor of Symbian’s upcoming OS or even Googles Android OS which pretty much every major provider has now went, “Ok, we’ll put it in our product line-up (happening as we speak).
Notice the difference. Google went Open Source Code on Android. Thats smart. Not just from a marketing perspective but from a SECURITY/Software advancement perspective.
Now lots and lots of developers will make applications, lots and lots of guru developers will find the flaws and wonderful ways to make it do even more.
I’ve read a few articles over the past few months saying essentially: 1. Microsoft is loosing marketshare in Windows Mobile (from 12.0% to about 9.7% currently), Apple has “Shot up” with the affordable iPhone. Symbian still has great marketshare but is now developing its own “Smart devices OS”. Google Android is at like 1.8%. BUT! It is anticipated that Google Android within 2 years will overtake ALL players and by this time next year Apple will feel “The bite” of Android and Android supported devices and watch its marketshare be drilled away.
Doesnt have to happen. Isnt Apple smart enough to know this? Yes. No.
Yes they are. But Cap’n Steve Job’s and crew still think “Macintosh”. They learned NOTHING from the near death of the Mac multiple times. They still like “Proprietary” while they claim, “See we set you free… our stuff is better”. It is better. But that doesnt mean crap.
Anyways… I digress. Apple isnt real bright in alot of ways when it comes to “people”. OS/X should be marketed on its own, “Want run Windows? Os/X? both? Ok.” Microsoft proven and continues to do so that there is more money in the software than hardware. Duh.
Who we need be BEETCHIN’ at is Apple. They have created the environment that allow the Chia-Pets to take advantage of people who simply want to do whatever they want to do with their iPhone/iPod. The parasites (good or bad) are simply taking advantage and/or providing a service of jailbreak or unlock or both because Apple “Pens us in like chickens”. We need all send a message to Apple that we dont like it and should they continue such practices then guess what? We’ll be looking for other iGizmo’s from other manufacturers. If they value us as customers they’ll allow us to run what we want to run on our iGizmo’s and at the sametime make a much better competitive environment for developers ultimately to the benefit of consumers, developers, providers and Apple. Sure… parasites will still exist but the difference is they wont be able to PREY on people TONS and TONS and TONS of people who simply want to be able to use their iGizmo’s as they so choose. Right?
So what we need is a website… Say… this one. Where a petition is started and people can leave a one line statement to Apple. Once nuff’ people have signed it, pissed off enough… then the site goes full public with it. Gets developer comments. Brings that to Infoworld, C/Net/Ziff Davis and before ya know it, there it is being reported on CNN affecting Apples stock and Board of Directors/Investors. Change often needs to be… hmmm… shall we say “encouraged”.

Good points, bit rambling, but good points. I’m just doing this as I would like to use my product to run presentations off of (ppt/keynote/etc.), and would like to even use the viewing the screen program as a way since there isn’t any presentation software out there I can hook up my product to a projector and play. With Windows PDAs there were plenty, not with Mac.
Very frustrated by the lack of proper Apps for such a thing consider what? > 85K Apps! Hope the Apps in Android fares better.

Blackrain will jailbreak your iPhone, I simply have not had the time to actually look at a disassembly of the application to see “just whats there”.
As I noted I’m not an Apple developer. I was considering developing applications for the iPhone which is how I have learned what I have learned. I’ve talked to several developers and essentially the only entities really making “respectable” revenues are big players, UBISoft/GameLoft for example. And even these are not “delighted”, such as TomTom etc.
The technology is not going to draw excellent developers of excellent applications unless Apple changes its ways, pretty simple. Same reason that many an application development house never hopped on the Macintosh.
When a entity such as Apple takes such efforts to remain proprietary at every level its a big turn off as businesses producing applications software dont like those levels of control essentially. If a development house is investing say $750,000 in developing an application for the iPhone and then needing rely on Apple’s App Store for SOLE distribution? And… Apple wants 15% of every copy sold? The alternative is writing an Installer which essentially is what Cydia is and the iGizmo needs be jailbroken in order to launch the installer (or the Installer again sits at the App Store). Why would any serious development house invest $750,000 for commercial calibur applications development knowing full well that they are going to need deal with exactly what we all see with every new firmware release? Tons of people where Jailbreaking is this rather “mystical” thing, works here, not there on and on. Thats a software support NIGHTMARE.
I know of at least 8 SERIOUS development houses that are already working with Android, Googles technology and my firm has begun the design phases for three similar SERIOUS applications for Android. Its quite simple, we know that Google isnt going to turn around and play these silly stupid games in attempting limit EVERYONE. They are smarter. They realize success depends on marketshare and marketshare is created by development houses making great applications for the technology. The ONLY reason Apple is “atop things” now in these smart mobile devices is that their platform is better than Windows Mobile and there are essentially no competitors. Its like when DOS was out there and wham, out comes the Macintosh.
Just as Apple lost its advantage back then with the Mac they are essentially doing the exact same thing with the iPhone.
Anyways… Blackrain does jailbreak the phone. If your using Win XP or Vista simply sync your phone, a backup will be created. Go into the folder where the backup resides and make a backup of that back up (just copy the folder someplace) as iTunes software does “one backup”, again, dumb). Then do a restore of the iPhone back essentially to its factory settings. Run Blackrain. If you get a “Waiting for device” and there it sits, unplug the cable, plug it in again… Blackrain has a issue syncing the USB port polling, shows a lack of knowledge on programming actually by Blackrains authors. Once it picks it up, just let it do its thing.

My iphone 2G is currently Jailbroken and unlocked at version 3.0. How do i get it at 3.1.2 with jailbreak and unlocked ? This is what i tried so far…. Updated to offical 3.1.2 but then i only get the connect to itunes logo. Then tried Blackra1n but its still at the connect to itunes logo. The phone is back on 3.0 with redsnow.
this is the easiest jailbreak i have used if you try and use this one and screw it up you don’t need an iphone
I’ve got a jailbroken iPhone that’s currently running 3.0 – I want to upgrade to 3.1.2 (for MMS) – and then jailbreak. Should I upgrade the iPhone OS first – then blackrain? Any guidance would be much appreciated.

You upgrade the OS first. However, I dont use MMS. One thing I noticed when I got done is that the MMS service went kaput.
I tried jailbreaking my 3g phone with the first blackra1n. I gave up after about 10 tries. First time trying this updated version, worked the first time!!
yea um, i have a 3gs on 3.1.2 firmware and i jailbroke it(blackra1n rc2) and it wokred and fine and now im benefitting from it. but one thing is that when i jbroke i downloaded cydia and tht was it. then i unistalled blackra1n. but now i hear word of the installer app “rock” being very good and i was wondering how i cold get blackra1n back on my iphone so i can get rock? please help
After many failed attempts with RC1 I was finally able to get my JB back for my 16gb 3G on 3.1.2. Thanks for this post. When running RC@ I did follow some of the advice posted around the web by running Blackra1n as an administrator. The JB worked on the first try and I have no idea if running as an admin made any difference.
I *THOUGHT* I was having trouble getting JB to take. After the third try I realized that the directions and picture describing the blackrain icon being on the quick launch bar are based on the quick launch bar having Apple’s default apps on it. Mine is filled with useful stuff
Point being, look through your various screens for the blackrain raindrop icon.
That aside, simple/painless install. Including my paranoia-induced slow movement, it took me about a half hour to do the jailbreak and to install Cydia. Of course it will take another week to sort out what apps/tweaks I want to be using.
I have an iPod touch 2g on os 3.1.1 I haven’t upgraded to 3.1.2. I tried rc2 on my iPod it said everything was done but then at the waiting for device to reboot screen I waited 10 minutes and nothing. Eventually I took off my iPod and restarted it using by holding home and standby/off after I had finished I had found no blackrain logo and everything was exactly the se as before

It’s just the way it is.
I’d imagine that as iTunes is updated the application program interface is also updated. That is to say, the software that both interacts with the iPhone itself through iTunes and that of how iTunes works with your computer (PC or Mac). As that “API” changes some of the jailbreak and/or other client side softwares may have issues.
Reality is one shouldnt need to jailbreak in the first place.
blackra1n rc2 worked fine – i first wipe the the ip3gs clean – formatted – i had backed up my contacts,mail account config settings, backed up no other data, no music – i can reinstall that later – i could not get the device to be recognized in itunes after i put the device in dfr device firmware upgrade – running vista,itunes v.9.02 – the itunes app would show an iphone device – so i could not install v.3.1.2 on laptop – usb ports have issues with the power that supplied ti the device – no problem – next to go ibm lenonova mini desktop – plug usb cable in the back of the machine – better power to iphone device – especially trying to put the device in dfu mode – thus ridding the device of the spinning wheel of death – swod – an iphone – with no data of firmware installed on it – to put a blanked device into dfu mode – getting rid of white apple logo – and plugging the device into usb to machine or pluging into usb cable ac – will not do – device will not even charge up but only show the battery icon and red – less than1 percent charge and after the white apple logo appeard – a dilema – all is not lost – plugging device into machine via usb cable will not put the device mode automatically – you must manual do a hard reset to get to dfu mode – hold home and power button till white apple disappeard and flashes off – release both buttons – hold power and home button both on – wait for white apple to appear and disappear twice and let both go – hold home button for five seconds and release – do nothing -wait 30 seconds – now hold power button on for 3 to 5 seconds and hold power and home for 10 seconds – release power button – keep holding the home button for 20 seconds – the restore icon will appear and device will beeo once at first and again a second time – you are now in dfu mode – itunes will stat and your iphone device will show in the left column – itunes will display that a new iphone is now recognized and that firmware is needed to be installed on device – select download and install – the trick is to have the firmware downloaded and leave in the itunes software updates folder – we downloaded v.3.1.2 – or if you prefer have the prior version of the firmware in thet directory – you use itunes v.8.2 for firmwares of version 3 or higher – install firmware on device – when finished – eject device from ituns – turn device off – unplug device cable – close itunes – shutdown machine – cold start machine – start device – plug usb into port on back of machine – do not use front or side usb hubs as this cause problems – attach device to usb cable – boot device – itunes starts – close itunes – now run blackra1n rc2 not blackra1n – only download blackra1n rc2 from http://www.blackra1n – now follow these steps – when blackra1n starts select dialog button make it rain – wait for device to beeo – blackra1n will put device in dfu mode automatically – close itunes if it starts – a message saying device is done jailbreaked, etc. – in fact it is – press okay or close window – device will rebooot – respring – close the blackra1n window – if device does not reboot then rern blackra1n again – the device will now reboot respring – close all blackra1n windows on the mac or windows machine – unplug device – set up wi-fi settings on device – remember to go to the blackr1n icon on device – tap icon – choose to install cydia,rock,icy packages – install pacages and any updates as prompted – when done shut deve off – now restart device – plug into usb cable – itunes will start – itunes will show device in left column and itunes will say a new devic is oresent – select new or prvious – make selection – if new device – itunes will display a carrier update is available for dvice – choose yes or no – nxt restore backup if you made one or disregard – synch device or choose not to synch device. so that it a way to intal from a blank wiped device – this example is from an iphone 3gs 32 gigabyte device. every things works on device, including cydia,rock,an icy. winterboard works – but here a few problems i have encountered – installings a couple of packages – the package or app could not install libgcc is require, this happenned when installing a c ++ compiler, another issue is all my apple store apps free an purchased are not working, the app starts an immediatly stops,such apps are skype, wedict, espn scorecard, google all these apps are in my applications in itunes on my pc, the message itunes displayed is my computer needs to be registered an authorized with the itunes apple store server, in fact my computer is already authorized with itunes, both my laptop and desktop machinines. any other experienced this issus the apps from the apple store no longer being able to run on the iphone, any fixs, solutions or so i ran the new blackra1n on my phone last night. I have verson 3.1.2 on my phone. It worked out fine, but i can not use any of my apple applications. Like Facebook, Weather, etc. It tries to open then it flashes on the screen like its going to, then closes. I have tried resetting the phone, turning it off. Im not sure what to do… thanks for the help..

So I posted earlier bout my apps not working. I took a day or two and they started to work. I don’t know what really fixed it. I tried resettting the phone, turning it off for awhile, tried downloading blackra1n again. Nothing had a immediate result. So I kinda gave up in it for awhile. And then the other night, it all starting working just fine. Crazy. Sorry I don’t have a fix answer to help anyone with this same problem. But figured I would let you know it works great now. Hello. I own a 32 gig 3GS running 3.1.2… downloaded via iTunes. This phone is in Singapore (purchased there), uses Singtel for a carrier, and is unlocked already by law here in Singapore.
So, I am confused by the baseband updates section. The phone is unlocked from the carrier and I certainly don’t want to do anything to change this.

I have 3 G that I used UltraSnow to unlock and jailbreak so I can use it for TMobile. It works perfectly now. But I have not upgraded to iTunes 9 or to any firmware past 3.01. I would like to know if I can and should update iTunes or my firmware or not? I have no idea. I really do not want to be locked out.
I can’t seem to find this information on what I should do, what I should use to do it, how to do it, what my options are and if there is any risk that address this in detail and specifically. I appreciate your wise counsel. Thank you!

Just delete and redownload the apps from the app store you had prevously to JB, and they will work fine. I did the JB and it work great for 2 dyas the i restarted my phone and went to restore mode. Now everythime i restart iphone after jailbreak it goes into restore mode. Anyone else with this prblem??

I usually don’t answer questions about jailbreaks or unlocks for two reasons:
1. I receive over 200 of these questions each day. Replying to all of them would take hours.
2. This is the main reason… people don’t read the tutorials and ask something that is clearly explained in the tutorial but they expect a quick answer.
For example, you ask if you should update to the latest iTunes. Well, if you had read the step 1, you would have found the answer to your qustion:
Step 1: Update iTunes to the latest version available and reboot your computer.

I tried to install the blackra1n RC2, but it never did the reboot. Just it turned off and when I turned on it never showed the icon for blackra1n. Is somebody know what happened? I want my tethering, but I don’t want to unlock it, cause somebody told me that I won’t be able to use the itunes programs.
I used RC3 on my iPhone 3GS and the image of blackra1n appeared for quite a lot of minutes and didn’t proceed from there. What could be the problem? My version is 3.0. Carrier is 4.0.
My Carrier is 5.6 and my iPhone 3G version is 3.1.2. What version and carrier it suppose to has for blackra1n RC2?
I don’t exactly what is going on, but I have used Blackra1n in 2 3GS’s , one acts normal the other one shows the “plug to itunes” everytime it restarts, so basically everytime you run out of battery if you dont have a computer nearby you’re f***d.
So, what could be different from one phone to the other? Also, is there a fix on that yet? Thanks
Everything went great except anytime I reboot it returns me to a new iphone screen/state which means I need to restore via iTunes or… I can rerun blackrain which boots me into my home screen and everything is fine.. until I have to reboot the phone again.

After running my iTunes and connect my iPhone 3G ver 3.1.2, (7D11), After running the black rain, after waiting for 4hours plus, my Iphone only display a black screen, i cannot even switch on my iPhone. this is the easiest jailbreak ever! Done 2Iphones, 3g & 3gs both on Vista and Xp, worked like a charm. Only problem I noticed that everyone else seems to have is that when you power the phone off, you have to run Blackrain again because it gets stuck in the Itunes connect picture. But not a problem, because when you run it the second time, it’s even faster because you don’t have to install anything. Everything is saved from before. (does not happen though when phone battery goes low and dies, only when you manually power it off.) Just a small litlle tweek. other than that, Awesome!

It worked for me, I have iPhone 3GS. But not from Mac OSX, but from Windows 7.
This is a procedure:
1. Update to 3.1.2 fw
2. Backup iPhone
3. Close iTunes and open Windows task manager and close ituneshelper.exe
4. Right click blackra1n.exe and run as administrator
5. Click “Make it Ra1n”
6. As soon as your phone goes black…right before it would normally show the restore picture on the phone, hold down the power and home button until you see the apple logo. As soon as you see the apple logo, let go of the power button but continue to hold home until you see George’s face on the iphone.
7. Leave your phone alone until it reboots
does this work for iphone 3g 3.1?? please answer

Same issue. 16 gb 3G using new software released today v3.1.3. Phone holds at blanks screen upon reboot and stays there until it powers off. Powering on works but blackra1n isn’t installed on phone. Ideas please?

How long should it take for your phone to reboot? I get through everything and get the pop up saying it is complete when your phone reboots but I have tried this several times and it will not go past there, I get a black screen and thats it. Im fucking sick of this fucking program it’s a piece of shit and doesn’t work for me.
I have tried EEEEEEVERYTHING. Airplane mode, on, airplane mode off, i’ve tried restoring factory settings, i’ve updated itunes, i’ve tried to download an older OS. update to most recent OS.
When running I’ve unblocked exe, run in vista, run in xp, run as admin, i’ve tried the home and power button trick, i’ve tried unplugging usb and replugging usb and running again.
I’ve uninstalled, reinstalled, rebooted. You name it I’ve fucking done it.
NOTHING works. All i get is either a hang up saying “wait for reboot” or the ONE time it rebooted by itself i still had NO change.
I’ve checked my iphone is compatible (non fixed) the serial starts 85002, the version is 3.1.3 (7E18), Model – MC131B. So I’m assuming piece of this piece of shit program isnt working, that my iphone is too new?
So my questions are….
Does allowing the iphone to resync to backed up settings affect the install?
Is my phone compatible?
Is it an OS problem?
Should I be using RC 1, 2 or 3?
I’ve spent 4 fucking hours with this turd of a program.
