With every new firmware comes a new unlock. Once again, it only took the Dev Team a few days to release an update to their PwnageTool and UltraSn0w to bring a safe and reliable iPhone 3.1.2 unlock.
This article is a summary of the different options you have to unlock your iPhone, iPhone 3G, or iPhone 3GS running 3.1.2.
How to unlock iPhone 2G 3.1.2:
- Unlock iPhone 2G using PwnageTool – Mac only. No Windows version out yet
How to unlock iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS 3.1.2:
The first step is to jailbreak your iPhone using PwnageTool. Once you have jailbroken your iPhone, you will have to install UltraSn0w from Cydia. To do so, follow these simple steps:
- Launch Cydia.
- Add the following source to Cydia repo666.ultrasn0w.com (note there is a “0″ in sn0w, not an “o”).
- After installing this source in Cydia, search for “ultraSn0w”.
- Install UltraSn0w and reboot your iPhone.
Or you can use BlackSn0w to unlock your iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS:
So am I right in understanding that the 3gs can be unlocked out of the box? In other words a 3gs with the latest os&baseband that hadn’t been previously jailbroken & unlocked

So i have 3.0 jailbroken and unlocked on my phone already. if i want to have my phone unlocked and jailbroken for 3.1.2 what would the steps be and is it possible.
I have a iPhone 3GS 32gb with 3.1 official FW, earlier today I followed the tutorial to Jailbreak the iPhone, which I completed well and jailbreaked my iPhone with 3.1.2 custom firmware and using Pwnage tool.
Now I followed all steps here, it seens to worked but when I insert the SIM card (from a non official carrier) it shows a message: “Searching” for long long time and after all it shows other message: “no service”.
I am not sure, but I heard before that we were weeks away from an unlock solution and today came all this together.
Or I am doing something wrong or I did not understand how these things work or might be both.
Any help will be very appreciated, thank you very much.
I’m currently with AT&T but am thinking about going to another carrier due to high cost from AT&T. When I unlocked the phone what r u downfalls of doing this and being on another carrier other than AT&T? Will some of the features of AT&T not work or my iTunes updates and etc.? Thanks

You did it right but you understand it wrong
First off you jailbreaked you didn’t unlock
Since you updated to the official firmware 3.1 you can’t get it unlocked yet as the baseband (the software that handles cellular network related stuff) was updated to 5.11 or higher which is not unlockable as of today
You can’t unlock and use with other service providers yet only AT&T for now
Jailbreaking is a different world from unlocking

If you have a Mac you create a custom firmware using PwnageTool and then Shift-Click and Restore to that custom firmware
If you have Windows wait for someone to post a link to a already created custom firmware for 3.1.2 and then Shift-Click Restore to that custom firmware
and then now your updated to 3.1.2 and unlocked and jailbreaked
Basically custom firmware preserves your baseband so it doesn’t get updated to the non-unlockable one everything else is updated except for the baseband
so what is the situation if you already upgrade to 3.1.2 through itunes, hence updating baseband? Can this be rolled back to the old baseband so it can be unlocked?
Hi Guys! For all of you that have searching after you jailbreak and unlock, unfortunatly there ins’t a way (at the moment – to my knowledge anyway) of unlocking your phone. Thats because when you updat to 3.1 it also uploads the systems bootloader (find out what bootloader you are on by downloading fuzzyband from cydia – search for it) to a level that can not be presently downloaded. This stops any sim from working (even O2 and AT&T).
This tutorial is for people who want to use 3.1 or 3.1.2 but have at present, have a lower firmware. The idea is that you can upgrade to 3.1 or 3.1.2 using custom firmware that does not update the bootloader at the same time. Once the bootloader has been upgraded it can not be unlocked (at present anyway).
Would be very happy if someone could answer poster #9′s question.

Answer to question 9:
If you updated through iTunes, it means you updated your baseband as well. This was a bad move as you are now locked. The Dev Team is most likely working on unlocking this baseband update but don’t expect anything anytime soon. Plus, ther eis no way to effectively downgrade the baseband.
The only baseband you can unlock is the one that came with 3.0 (baseband 04.26.00)

Thanks for your responses guys. I have also come to the same conclusion after trawling all the forums I could think of. It was just plain dumb of me to update through iTunes and I should have known better

what does the last sentence mean: .. even O2 and AT&T)..?

Need to know atleast the time frame for the updated itunes unlock. I updated as well to 3.1.2 and can’t use phone. When you say no time soon. What does that mean?
Have 3gs 3.1.2 jailbreaked with pwnage tool and unlocked with ultrasnow. some problems have come up. 1st the carrier logo in the upper left does not appear anymore. 2nd the battery life seems to be quiet a bit shorter now. But it does work..
There is no new baseband unlock since iPhone OS 3.0.1 software update if I’m not wrong…

Quit freaking out already I did the same thing and made the mistake of like half the iPhone users I jumped on the new download bandwagon regardless of thinking of the consequences. The dev team will come up with an unlock soon, these guys are pro’s and they are awesome at what they do. Unfortunately for now we just get to look at our iPhone (temporarily iPod’s) and wait for the unlock. Maybe just maybe for the week that this is going to take to update we could all, oh I dunno say go visit someone face to face instead of texting and going crazy cause “my phone is faked” “shit this and shit that” (poster #16, simmer down son)
TO conclude
a) No unlock currently for 3.1.* if you updated through apple, this over rides the baseband
b) visit someone face to face and say hello

What I would like to know is is there ever going to be an unlock for Iphone 3G for 5.11 modem firmware? Because I am having this modem firmware and, although, I am using AT&T in the States, I am planning on using the phone internationally. So just asking whether some we will be able to unlock our phones.

only 3.0 OTB can be unlocked. ur 3.1.2 is upgraded via custom firmware!!! please mention it otherwise many ppl will assume 3.1.2 can be unlock. the topic will also lure too many innocent to upgrade their iphone and eventually locked up!!

I have a 3gs OTB with 3.0 and used the custom ipsw from the pwnage mac tool now like many I have the same problem with the searching for network.(I did not use iTunes 3.1.2 update) I thought if you use the custom ipsw from the pwnage tool you would still be able to unlock using ultrsn0w from cydia. Was I suppose to update using 3.0.1 custom ipsw first then 3.1.1 custom ipsw then 3.1.2 custom ipsw in that order to enventually be able use the custom ipsw @ 3.1.2 and be able to unlock w/ultrasn0w? Now next ? is there anyway to downgrade back to 3.0 even though I never used the OEM update from iTunes to get to 3.1.2? Thank guys for any input!!!

I am pleased to hear such reassuring words from poster #22, Jon T. I haven’t even purchased the 3gs yet but i do plan to buy it tomo, even though I know it can not be unlocked at the present time. I know it has been a while and maybe something new may have come up. Also i have seen iphoneunlocking.com which is supposed to unlock the iphone, even with 3.1.2., plus provide you with a bunch of extras. Well again your wise words have helped me! haha I haven’t purchased anything but I was looking at this article last night that says this company has just released the software necessary to unlock it. Also, the guy i’m buying from says his is under warrenty till july 2010 and that i could technically get an att sim card, restore it to factory settings, relocking it, and complain about it being slow and dropping a lot of calls and apple will replace it for me. Any advice on weather that will work or not since i’m a t-mobile customer. Even if i have a buddies sim card that works with att, would they do a lot of digging to make sure i’m ACTUALLY on att?

Matt lol, don’t fall for that stuff, those are just websites created by the spamming companies to make them selves look legit. They scam a TON of people so they spend a lot of time creating stuff to make them self look legit. These companies are basically scams because anytime a new FW comes out (3.1.2) they claim they can unlock. Now don’t get me wrong on this one these companies CAN unlock phones BUTTTTT they can not unlock phones with new FW, they will just send you the latest version of ultrasn0w or blackra!n or pwnge tool. SO if you have a phone that is on 3.0.1 FW they can unlock it for you, however they can’t do anything further. Don’t worry about it, check this site out for updates, this is the legit one from the apple dev team, they are the ones who will let us know what to expect. http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ Any other questions let me know (also about a week ago I knew nothing re: iPhones as I’m new to them. Read around the blogs and get to know what’s going on, you will be a lot more knowledgeable and will understand more what you are getting into.
As for Balazs #36. There is no way for you to re-install 3.0.1 on your phone. The only way you can do that is by first of all jailbreaking your iPhone which you have. What you need to do from there is to boot up Cydia app and search for FuzzyBand, install fuzzyband on your phone and run the program. Once that program runs it will tell you 1 of 2 things. First of all it will tell you what bootloand and baseband you are using. If you have a bootloader of 5.09 (which most of us have) you are screwed and have to wait for the new redsn0w. If you are one of the lucky ones that has 5.08 you are made in the sun. If for some reason you have 5.08 you need to run cydia again and the load a program called bootneuter. Run that and downgrad your phone to baseband version 4.11.08 or something close to that i’m sorry I don’t know the exact number.

You seem like you have a lot more knowledge than your claiming by saying your new to iPhone realm! haha Maybe you just understand the whole concept of bootloaders and basebands more than i, but never-the-less, we move forward! I’ve also come across someone who lives in the uk and is selling 32 gb 3gs factory unlocked for 420. that includes shipping and he tells me i will be recieving an email from ebay with instructions on how to complete the transaction. I went to the dev-team blog and their info about factory unlocked iphones is that you don’t need to worry about the updates, and that it’s relatively easy to jailbreak it. Do you have any thoughts or more wise words regarding the factory unlocked iphones?

I’m really not to up on the factory unlocked ones. I’m a little hesitant however to get anything like this over ebay. You never know what you are going to get and you are out your money if its not right. People have a history on ebay of upselling and overselling stuff. I would just wait it out a bit, I know you want a phone bad, however wait until the right one comes up. I would also stay with an american phone (assuming you are in the states) that way you won’t have any problems. Also take a look at some of your local classified stuff, we have Kijiji here in canada or Craigslist that people sell phones on. If you look on there you can always meet a person and see the phone face to face.

Please read the following before asking any more questions in regards to unlocking your iPhone 3G or 3GS on 3.1.2…
In order to unlock your iPhone 3G or 3GS your need to “Jailbreak” your phone to be able to install “Cydia” a 3rd party applications installer.
This is possible to do in a few different ways: either trought “Blackra1n” or “PwnageTool”.
Now here is the thing, IF you use “Blackra1n” to upgrade your firmware you will also upgrade your “baseband” which will make your iPhone non unlockble at this time.
Only “PwnageTool” will allow you to preserve your “baseband”…
If you by misstake upgraded your firmware through iTunes to 3.1.2 you also upgaded your “baseband” to 5.11.** which means that you will not be able to UNLOCK your iPhone as of yet.
Jailbreaking and Unlocking is 2 very different things…
Now in order to unlock your iPhone 3G or 3GS with the firware 3.1.2, “Jailbreak” your phone using “PwnageTool” (you should be able to find the “Restore file” through any search on the internet. the file is called: iPhone1,2_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw) and install “Cydia”. After this is done, open “Cydia” and add the following source: http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com.
After adding this source, search for ultrasn0w in “Cydia” and intall the app through “Cydia”.
Now reboot your iPhone with you new SIM card in the phone…
The phone will display “serching” in the top left hand corner of your screen, and it will take about 15-20 sec to find your new nework. If it would to continiue to say “searching” just take your SIM card out of the phone “still switched ON” and put it back in and wait another 10-15 sec. This should do the trick.

I’m choosing the right iphone 3G(S) model in pwnagetool, i’m creating the custom firmware but when i alt-click on restore in iTunes and choose the custom firmware, it says it’s not the correct firmware.
What can i do? Please help..
Don’t do it just yet! Just wait until the Dev team puts out the proper unlock. If you are booked and bound on doing it right now then keep searching google for some answer. I would however recommend waiting because installing 3.1.2 messes with your baseband

For those of you who have installed ultrasn0w and are stuck in “searching” mode. Just go into Cydia and uninstall it. Your phone will still be jailbroken (but not unlocked) and you can use it on you home network. Not the solution you are looking for but at least it is not just an iPod Touch anymore.

Thanks again for all your advice. It turns out most everyone who is selling the ipnone for what WE would consider a good or great deal is all just a rip-off scam. I think i’ve decided that IF i do buy an iphone now, i will probably just buy a white 3gs on 3.1.2. with the upgraded baseband and just unlock it and pimp it out until the time comes when dev-team releases the unlock. This is just the one time i’ll have a little extra money for a while so i figure this might be a good time to make the investment. Do you know anything pertaining to the iphone becoming available on tmobile? I know the contract with att is almost up but do you know any details?

I’m sorry I do not know anything about the T-Mobile solution I am from Canada and we have different service providers. Best advice is to call T-Mobile and just ask.

Just in case anyone from Apple is reading this… I have always hated Microsoft because of their constant tendency for bad quality and unethical practices. I thought Apple was the good-guy. I was planning to buy all these Macbooks and Mac Mini’s, etc. But after owning an iPhone for a month and finding out how Apple is fighting so hard to keep us stuck with AT&T, I have no loyalty to Apple. Clearly, they are more than happy to hurt their own customers, just to put a few bucks in their pocket.
There is no good-guy, and I should have known that. I feel stupid now.
Apple is just as sleazy as Microsoft. Yes, they made a great product. I love my iPhone. And as soon as some other company makes a phone even close to rivaling the iPhone, I will jump on that, and Apple can kiss my ass!
hey… i have a iphone 3g on att with 3.1.2 software… not jailbroken yet… and the t-mobile rep in the mall got me to sign up saying i can switch it to tmobile carrier.. im not very familiar with unlocking and stuff and he said it can be easily done… anybody know how to switch iphone 3g (att) to make it iphone 3g for tmobile?

i was stupid enough to buy software to unlock my iphone from SWGEG for 25.00. They promised complete refund for any reason. They sent me pawnage tool which didnt even support my version of iphone and have refused to refund the money. I tried to involve Paypal
thinking it protected me and was told they only garuantee that you will get the product, not that it works. I called them and they said they would not get involved. it told them SWREG was illegally selling the pwnage tool on the internet, WHICH VIOLATES THE LIC POLICY OF THE AUTHORS. they could care less. I asked for the name of the specific company and their address and they said i could supponea it! Any recourse? Anywhere to post this so others are not scammed.

I am in the same boat as many of you, but im still not totally clear. I updated to 3.1.2 through itunes and its correctly jailbroken, but my phone isnt working even with AT&T. I thought that unlocking was only for use with T-mobile etc? Should I have to unlock my phone to just use AT&T? Thanks for any help!

There is currently no way to unlock 3.1 or 3.1.2 updated from iTunes, because the modem firmware and bootloader were updated, making all unlock solutions useless. There are a few out-of-the-box 3.1 phones and even 3.1.2 phones which still have the old modem firmware version which can be unlocked, but these are the exceptions. However the unlock for these new versions is on the way. iPhoneUnlockZone.com will be one of the first to offer the solution…coming soon!
Yay good news one of the comanies in the UK have put up a bounty to unlock the new 3.1.2 sofware and it should be avaliable sometime this weekend! they have made it clear that they will be the only ones selling this (basically they will have exclusivity to it) I know that Gohot the person who created one of the jailbreaks for this new software

I am also a victim to the basband 5.07.11, i tried all sort of method to downgrade, restore from previous firmware. They all not going to work. It seems like when u upgraded to 3.1.2 updated from iTunes, there is no turning back. So, I am going to try those shops which claim to be able to unlock iphone to see if they really able to do it. Otherwise, I am just praying everyday… that someone can save the world of iphone fans.

My situation (which appears to be the most common): iPhone upgraded to 3.1.2, with 5.11.07. I had a friend try and unlock it but of course it didn’t work; it is jailbroken though so I can use the non-wireless functions. It seems my only recourse is to wait for DevTeam to come through and bust this thing! I hope that this will be soon; I’ve checked their blog and it says that they have a tool that is 3.1.2 compatible. Does anyone know if this is compatible with my situation? I myself don’t know how to unlock but I’m hoping to direct my friend to a means to unlock this!
I’m in the same situation as most of you. I bought my used 3G yesterday from someone who upgraded to a 3GS. When I picked it up he told me how he upgraded it to the latest firmware for me. At the time that sounded like a good thing. I probably would have passed on the deal had I known how bad of a situation he created by upgrading FW. I guess I’ll attempt to jailbreak it and use it as an itouch until a solution is found.

yes you can downgrade and unlock your phone even if you are on the later bootloader it does downgrade your baseband but not the bootloader ive done this on 3 iphones with official itunes update 3.1.2 downgraded to 3.0.1 then downgraded to 3.0.
now this worked on 2 out of te 3 phones i did it with so wont work on all iphones but it is not easy if your intrested ill tell you how i did it

i finally found a way to get ur iphone back to normal even after u hav updated it to the official 3.1.2 from itunes and updated the baseband, mine is a 2g phone, what u hav to do is get the custom software 3.1.2 then run blackra1n only till u get the screen where the usb connect screen s seen, not the connect screen with the slide to unlock, so as soon as u get jst the usb connect screen without the slide to unlock u remove the usb cable 4rm d phone ,the iphone screen stays stuck there,now open itunes and do a normal shift+restore with the custom software this time.

Angel* the only way that I know to get your iPhone out of freeze and DFU mode is to just continue holding the reboot and home button for like 30 seconds, the screen will stay black, however just plug it into your computer and boot up iTunes, it should recognize the iPhone in recovery, from there you are just instal one of your pwned versions of 3.1.2 or you can now wait till Nov 4th (thank you ree!!) to unlock the phone.

Hello everyone good news the developer or balckra1n has done it again and the unlock is released ahead of schedule! It is today so today is officially snowday!!!! Blacksnow is avaliable as of today! As for daniels comments although they were very good can I just stress to everyone that unless you want to Jam your phone or cause it to have problems I wouldnt suggest doing that as it doesnt let it restore properly and can cause your iphone to have problems in the long run….that being said all make sure you follow @geohot on twitter who is the creater of the jailbreak and unlock for 3.1.2 on the higher baseband. MY PHONE IS UNLOCKED AND JAILBROKEN. and i have 3.1.2 i lived in san diego when i got it done. just look on craigslist and type in jailbreak and unlock iphones. and call and ask.
Blacksnow worked great! I just wish there was a UMA option for the iphone.
Phew- that was hard- the ONLY way I could get the unlock to work was to Un-install blacksn0w on my iphone (vis Cydia) and then install UltraSn0w. Once I did that and rebooted- I got the unlock and phone service back.
Here is what I did:
1. I did a JB using blackra1n (worked well)
2. I installed blacksn0w via cydia (since it did not show up). –> Unluck was unsuccessful: always searching for network.. I did all the tips and tricks, but none worked.
3. I Uninstalled blacksn0w
4. I installed Unltrasn0w via cydia (http://www.redmondpie.com/unlock-iphone-3.1.2-firmware-with-ultrasn0w-pak569/ ) starting at step 3
5. Reboot the phone
6. All Well!
BTW: I found that 3.1.2 hides the network APN setting to setup your data network- I found this online solution that helped me set it back to what I needed:

Very very helpful post, thanks so much. I did everything right (well…. I guess not….) but it still doesn’t work. Here’s a sum-up:
1. Updated with iTunes.
2. Dang.
3. Jailbroke with PwnageTool (awesome!)
4. Did something with blackra1n (?)
5. At one point I hit a button that would make “it” ra1n.
6. Also unlocked with ultrasn0w 9.2
Now my phone is accessible by itunes, I just can’t send or receive calls or texts.
All advice would be very much appreciated – I’m fairly new at this, please be gentle.
I have found a way to jailbreak&unlock the i phone 3G 3.1.2 5.11.7 for T-mobile a long procces but it worked ask me about it

Hi everyone, there are still people asking how to unlcock the 3.2.1 firmwire with 5.11.7 baseband….I recently told you all that it is now avaliable for jailbreak and unlock to do this you just need to go to http://www.blackra1n.com and install black rain (which is free) to do this you just plug your iphone into the computer and then LET IT RAIN (you will see what this is about when you do it) after the Blackra1n application has been installed on your iphone you have now jailbroken it after that you can go to the blackra1n application and there will be an option (which is the last one) called SNOW or blacksnow, install this and your phone will be unlocked, it takes only a couple of minutes and is the ONLY AVALIABLE UNLOCK AT THIS TIME, it is best to use this one although others can unlock as previous people have said…this is the only safe way to do it and it doesnt make your phone come into any problems. ULTRASNOW on cydia is only avaliable to unlock on the old baseband but not the new 5.11.7 baseband.
Hey everyone! I’m having some issues with my iPhone 2g MMS. I was able to do it with no problems what-so-ever up until about 2 1/2 weeks ago. I tried reinstalling an mms repo on my phone to allow it but now it wont allow me to set the correct apn of WAP.VOICESTREAM.COM. every time i put it in it, It just doesnt stick. Can anyone help me get this working again?
Hi everyone, Ree is right. My iPhone 3.2.1 also was locked with the SIM is not accepted and I jailbreak it using blackra1n and the using the application to unlock it and now it is working as normal. Thanks for the tip Ree.

Matt if your comming to an iPhone from a BB you need to switch your data plan with tMobile. They are actually very helpful and helped me get the internet crap working on my phone. Anyway the APN isn’t wap.voicestream.com, but epc.tmobile.com or internet2.voicestream.com and you will also need enable roaming. Once i had entered this and reset the network settings I was good to go.
Hey guys very wrong information posted here unltrasnow is only uptil 3.0 Os NOT for 3.2.1. Only geohots blacksnow is the availabe unlock for the latest version. the procedure mentioned above is for 3g and 3gs NOT for 2g phones

Can someone PLEASE help me!! I was trying to back up the contacts on my iphone because i wanted to transfer them to my new phone and i lost ALL OF THEM!! I followed the instructions on the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVzjoD6f4bA video that this guy posted and i tried to transfer my contacts to windows contacts, instead i transferred the contacts i had in Windows Contacts to the original iphone which was NOTHING and DELETED EVERY CONTACT I HAD!!! There HAS to be a way to get them back!!! Please someone help, i’m freaking out!!!!

Just a quick Thank You to all of the knowledgeable people on this site for posting your tips and experiences with regards to Unlocking the 3g. My phone was running 3.12 with 05 11 07 and was not accepting the blacksnow app. from cydia. I installed an app found on cydia called Fuzzyband which has a feature that allows you to roll back your firmware to 04.26.08 and after doing this, the searching for a carrier stopped and i could once again use my phone. This process seemed to work flawlessly..Thanks Again for your help and expertise.
I have jailbroken by 3G however it still has bootloader 5.9. Cidya will not downgrade to 05.11.01 unless the bootloader is 5.8 and below. Any ideas?.

Hi, I was using a old iphone 3g factory unlocked already jalbreaked. Now I just got an ebay 32gb 3gs with 3.0.1 firmware and modem firmware 04.26.08.
I just installed a custom firmware ACTIVATED, 3.1.2 and after little trouble everything seems to be in working condition, but PUSH IS NOT WORKING.
I tryed to install push it and no luck at all
I use ATT in USA but sometimes I travel overseas and need to use my iphone.
My question is, I really NEED the push, if I jailbreak with a non-activate phone (and use my sim to do it) will I be able after to activate it, unlock my iphone with ultrasn0w and use another sim with push working? Or I’ll be stuck on a non-activate firmware with no unlock via ultrasn0w?
