We already knew that GeoHot was up to something but we now have confirmation that he is this close to release a new jailbreaking tool called BlackRa1n.
First, he wrote a short blog post titled “I’m just going to leave this here“. The post has no text besides the title and shows what could be mistaken for an iPhone running a bunch of codes that most of us wouldn’t understand. Well, it’s not an iPhone. It’s an iPod Touch 3G. You can tell by simply looking at the location of the image, which reveals its name: ipt3_jailbroken.JPG. You can also tell by zooming in the image.
What does this mean? Well, this is a teaser to tell us that he has successfully jailbroken the iPod Touch 3G, which could be considered as the hardest device to jailbreak these days. And from what I understand, he’s using the same exploit on both the iTouch 3G and the iPhone 3GS. According to this tweet, he’s pretty much done with these 2 devices and will now get to work on the 4 others, which shouldn’t take too long.
GeoHot also gave us 2 interesting clues about the name of his new jailbreak. First, he said his new website was up, asking who could find it. Then he gave it all away by saying that “black is the new purple”. Have you connected the dots yet? His last jailbreak was called PurpleRa1n. If black is the new purple, then his new jailbreak is BlackRa1n (see BlackRa1n.com).
We still don’t know exactly when to expect BlackRa1n to be available but according to GeoHot’s own ETA, it should be sometimes today. One thing is sure though, I will be refreshing GeoHot’s Twitter page like a maniac for the next 12 hours.
This BlackRa1n jailbreak will be a huge release for many of us jailbreakers, especially those stuck at 3.1. Are you one of them?

No, I did mean 3.1. If you’re at 3.0, you still have the option to jailbreak using a custom IPSW.
However, if you updated to 3.1 via iTunes, then you’re locked out of the jailbreak.

Will this be a jailbreak for just Mac users or will Windows users be able to use it, too? Since this will be for “all”, am I correct to assume that my Touch 2G running 3.1.1 will be able to be jailbroken, too? (Crossing my fingers!)

it is amazing that he was able to successfully jailbreak 3.1 in 2 days (not to mention a jailbreak that while work on every device) seeing as I’ve been following the chronic team and iphonedev team for weeks and weeks and they still haven’t managed to succed.
I am very excited in seeing this new software and even more so since it will deal with the reportedly “unjailbreakable” 3.1 firmware that apple released.
geohot is the best, in the past I’ve never used purplera1n, but now that he has given us blackra1n I firmly beleive that he is a jailbreak god

As far as i know the blackra1n software only jailbreaks 3.1 as for unlocking, you might just have to buy a factory unlocked phone if you have already updated to apples 3.1 firmware seeing as that might remain still “unlockable”.

Blackra1n will NOT be able to UNLOCK. if you updated to 3.1 via apples itunes firmware you cannot downgrade or unlock any device due to the new baseband firmware. Blackra1n is ONLY for jailbreaking 3.1
man i just update my iphone 3g to 3.1.2 huhu and im still waiting for some program to unlock it hopefully this will work
My understanding is that the updating to 3.1 and beyond via iTunes store permanently changes your “baseband” firmware and makes it impossible to unlock the phone for different carriers. The new version of Ultrasn0w will allow you to do this buy only if you have a JB 3.0 or 3.0.1 you can update to 3.1 and unlock, but that’s it.

Does anyone know whether BlackRa1n supports Windows or Mac. It doesnt seem the Dev Team will be releasing a 3.1 JB for Windows anytime soon!

Blackra1n most defanitly serves windows users, as for the mac, I’m pretty sure it will, but I’ll have to check.

Sorry I sort of misread your question,
you can unlock your 3gs with geohots purplesnow. Though I am not sure if purplesnow for 3.1 is out yet. But it may be just seach purplesn0w in google

I would personally give george Hotz a blow job and post it on the internet, if it jailbreaks my iphone 3gs 3.1. The iphone is horse shiit if it isnt jail braked.,
However i have a feeling this will not be the savior we are all expecting.

Blackra1n is a jailbreak for allllll devices..which includes the 3GS.
so yes you will be able to jailbreak with it even if you upgraded to iphone 3.1 with itunes. As for the baseband, blackra1n is currently only a jailbreak software, not an unlock.

Blackra1n is for jailbreaking all iPod touch/iPhone devices including the newest iPod touch 3rd Generation and iPhone 3GS
It jailbreaks even iPhone OS 3.1 but this is already possible with iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iPod touch 1G and 2Gs as you can just Shift-Click and Restore to 3.0 firmware in DFU Mode (It will give you error 1015 because Apple isn’t signing it anymore but it is already downgraded you just have to jailbreak it using redsn0w)
As for unlocking… Users who have baseband 5.11 can downgrade using Fuzzyband depending on what bootloader you are using (highest is 5.08)

The thing i dont understand is, i have 3gs os 3.0 jailbroken with purplera1n now and if i upgrade to the newest 3.1.2 i guess? with itunes now, will blackra1n be able to jailbreak it then?

yes you could update to 3.1.2 with iTunes and JB ( once released and confirmed working) but you best bet if you have never upgraded past 3.0 is to use latest pwnage tool by dev team which now supports 3gs, it will give you 3.1 (not released for 3.1.2 yet) features but with the older baseband allowing you to unlock as well.
Blackra1n is of most benefit to people like me with 3gs 3.1 OTB because we can’t use pwnage as we can’t downgrade first.

yees, i also have an iphone 3gs which i have updated by itunes by mistake and according to what Geohot have said, ALL devices will be included. which means that the iphone 3gs on firmware 3.1 till 3.1.2 will be included.

Hi. I downloaded Blackra1n (+Cydia) on new – never unlocked/jailbroken 3gs 3.1 and still can’t access root folder. Msg says Iphone not jailbroken! Everything seemed to go as planned! Help?!!

Same Problem here… Successfull jailbroke 3gs 3.1.2 installed cydia and winterboard but cant access the root folder in every usb app. Iphone Explorer, Disk Aid, Íphone Browser… nothing works Q_Q

After i updated to 3.1.2 and jailbroke it with blackra1n, my camera is now slower when looking around in a room. Do somebody else se this problem or is it just for me?

If I understand correctly there is no program to re-jailbreak/unlock a 3gs iphone thay has downloaded 3.1 from itunes.

This blackra1n is a tethered program meaning if you shut down ipod or if battery dies,you need to redo blackrain again
um well i think i download the 3.1 on my new ipod touch i just got it for christmas does that mean i cant do the jail break ??????
