Unlock iPhone 3.1
Every time a new iPhone OS comes out, it gives headaches to jailbreakers and unlockers. This time is no exception to the rule… The new iPhone OS 3.1 has been available for a few weeks and the Dev Team has successfully been able to unlock it.
It took a while but all 3 iPhones (iPhone 2G, 3G, and 3GS) can now be unlocked. You will either need to use PwnageTool or UltraSn0w to unlock your iPhone, depending on the model.
In order to unlock your iPhone, you will have to jailbreak it first. Click this link for more information on how to jailbreak iPhone 3.1.

Unlock iPhone 2G 3.1
So far, there is only one way to unlock the iPhone 2G running the 3.1 firmware. You have to use PwnageTool, which only works for Mac OS X. Follow this step by step tutorial to unlock your iPhone 2G with PwnageTool. A Windows version is in the works and it should be available in a few days.
Unlock iPhone 3G 3.1
You can unlock your iPhone 3G 3.1 with UltraSn0w. First, jailbreak your iPhone then:
- Launch Cydia.
- Add the following source to Cydia repo666.ultrasn0w.com (note there is a “0″ in sn0w, not an “o”).
- After installing this source in Cydia, search for “ultraSn0w”.
- Install UltraSn0w and reboot your iPhone.
Unlock iPhone 3GS 3.1
Just like the iPhone 3G, you first have to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS (see tutorials) and then install UltraSn0w from Cydia.

there’s no way to unlock Iphone 3G upgraded to 3.1 yet
indeed, the baseband related to this FW is 5.11 which is not ‘unlockable’ for the mo’
The only way you can do it, it rare case is by using Fuzzyband
Indeed, you can downgrade your baseband with fuzzyband if your bootloader is 5.08 (which is almost rare)
So follow the steps below
Install Fuzzyband(not 3G fuzzyband) from Cydia
launch Fuzzyband
check your bootloader, if it’s 5.08 then it’s gonna work properly otherwise, just give up until the next jailbrak will be release
downgrade the baseband by clicking ‘Downgrade’ from the fuzzyband main menu
Once done, you can downgrade your iphone to version 3.0 using Itunes & Quickpwn 225 (check on the web, there’re many tutorials)
Then you can easily jailbrake & unlock it

I got screwed with the 3.1 update. My iPhone crashed and I tried to do a restore from back up in iTunes 9 and it upgraded my baseband >:-( Now I can only install 3.1 and I cant use Fuzzyband either as my bootloader is 6.08

Another way to downgrade is to download firmware ver 3.0 (if you havent got it already). Open iTunes 9.
Put your iPhone into recovery mode
Hold down alt and shift and click the restore button in Itune
Select firmware ver 3.0 from the open window
iTunes should now restore your phone with Ver 3.0
Once restored use your unlocking s/w to unlock again

So I’ve jailbroken my iphone 3G, and followed all steps, each going smoothly. Now I am getting a “waiting for activation” message, followed by a “no service” indicator in the top left corner…this is with both my original ATT sim (from the US) and my o2 sim (needed in the UK)
Am I doing something wrong? When I was jailbreaking I unchecked activate, but should I have left this checked?

UltraSn0w is the only software unlock for iPhone. If it doesn’t work, it means you did something wrong.
If you have T-Mobile, make sure you turn off 3G in your iPhone settings.

As the other guys wrote: Phone is searching, but does not find any provider and jumps then eventually into “no service”. help is very much appreciated. removed ultrasnOw, left jailbrake on. Now the phone works again, but obviously still locked.

There is NO unlock for 3.1 yet. I think Seb. should delete this thread to avoid users from updating. The only way to use 3.1 with unlock is through a custom firmware. The custom 3.1 firmware will not update the baseband therefore you can keep your unlock. If you update through iTunes to 3.1 that mean your baseband also update so now you can not unlock your phone anymore. You can only hope the Dev. Team release an unlock soon in the near future…

with pwnage 3.1 I just tried to unlock my I phone 3G which was running fine before with O2 Genion. Now it doesn´t recognize the Sim-card anymore. What can I do?
I always hate the dumb questions on forums. But I think I may have one. And I appreciate the help, even if you just contemplate giving it to me.
My fiance bought my an Iphone 2g that was unlocked. He Brought it home and I hooked it up, Not knowing anything about Iphones (previous blackberry user) and I updated it to 3.1 without during any research. My bad, I know. I’m an idiot. Anyways, When I plug my phone in without a sim card or with my tmobile sim card, it says “Sim card not supported” which leads me to beleive it is blocking my access to the restore button so I can load the custom ispw. What in the hell can I do to fix it or atleast be able to see the restore button. Please help! Without being mean.
and ps: I’ll never go back to blackberry after spending the 10 minutes with my iphone.

Samantha, sorry to tell you but you will not be able to unlock your phone again. I am glad you understand that you must wait to upgrade since you have to re-unlock every time. No matter what anyone tells you the 3.1 cannot be updated. You will have to wait until the unlock is released which could be any day now. Just be patient. OH MY GOD… what idiocy. I will say it ONE last time. TETHERING with the Iphone 3G and 3GS with official apple 3.1 upgrade or out of the Box 3G or 3GS IS DEAD..DEAD..DEAD. The Dev team WILL NEVER…NEVER…NEVER bring it back. A few and I mean a VERY few people either updated using ONLY Dev-team software or did not update at all. Those people can still tether. But NO ONE and I mean NO ONE else (which is pretty much all the rest of us) can tether ever again. There is NO HACK, NO WORKAROUND, or NO TRICK that will ever bring tethering back. News flash I work at apple so I know what I’m talking about. The ONLY important thing about any of these phones is tethering all the rest is bullshi*t…AND TETHERING with and up to date iphone is DEAD..PROVE ME WRONG..
Sorry, i have 3GS and 3.1 with T-Mobile and it works perfectly. It seems to be connected solely to the provider.

my comment concerned the issue “tethering”. re unlock: You need to delete untrosn0w so that you can use the phone again (locked though).

I have an iPhone 3G 3.1 (AT&T). I just moved to Europe so I wanted to unlock my phone so that I can use a European Sim Card. I jail broke my phone using PwnageTool then used UltraSn0w from Cydia to unlock it. I have tried 3 different European Sim Cards and my phone won’t register any of them..it just says “Searching” in the upper left corner. What can I do? Did I do something wrong? I need my phone to work ASAP…can someone help me?
Alex & everyone else. You cannot unlock your phone at this time that is why you keep getting the searching when you put a sim in. This only applies to the firmware 3.1. There is a software issue and apple is exchanging new phones out with 3.0.1. You just have to know what to tell them I had all mine exchanged (3) and now they can be unlocked. The reason why it won't unlock is because even if you do downgrade to 3.0 your baseband is still stuck on 5.09. One of the reasons why dev team has not released an unlock for either 3G or 3GS is due to the baseband upgrade that comes automatic with the 3.1OS upgrade.
News flash!!!!!!! There may be hope GENIUS!!! GeoHot just released a jailbreak for all iphones running 3.1OS. So while in your grim world there is no hope for tethering….I would bet money on the fact that an unlock may be possible and released within the next few weeks. So I'll sit back and relax while the true geniuses set out to prove you wrong……

Sorry to tell you this but there is currently no unlock for the 3.1OS. This is version is currently only jailbrakeable only. However, keep watching news from DevTeam as I do foresee an unlocking option for some of US who are stuck with ipod touches instead of iphones. But as for now there is nothing you can do. The only option you have is to download fuzzyband from cydia and run it to see if your baseband is 5.08. If this is the case then you can downgrade the baseband and then jailbreak and unlock with ultrasn0w. But from what you are saying I would bet money on the fact that you are running on 5.09 baseband or higher. Currently there is no unlock for this….hope this helps.
If people want to continue using their iPhones on any network besides AT&T, they will need to NOT update from their unlocked 3.0 version. All these articles claiming to unlock 3.1.1 are not true. At this time you cannot unlock 3.1. You can Jailbreak with the dev team pwnage tool. But NOT unlock.
If you have an iPhone and want to save your unlock, DON’T Update to 3.1 Period end of story.
Until someone comes up with a solution to Apples Software changes, Your update will render your iPhone usless with T-Mobile or any other GSM network besides AT&T with a iPhone account.
Please if you have an unlocked phone, do your homework and do NOT Update it.

I do jailbreaking on the side, and in all my searching (months if you accumulate all the hours) there is NO unlock for 3.1 ON WINDOWS. The new version of quickpwn will jailbreak and unlock but that’s only for MAC users.
For us windows users, your best bet is to NOT update to 3.1 if you’re already unlocked, stay at 3.0 or 3.0.1. Dev Team is working on a windows update to redsn0w.
HOWEVER, use blackra1n, http://www.blackra1n.com, and download his program to ONLY jailbreak iphone 2g, 3g, and 3gs as well as ipod touch 1g, 2g, and 3g (but it’s tethered for 3g)
It’s easy and it works.
If you’re already unlocked, stay that way till the dev team releases their update.

I got mine iphone 3gs 3 weeks ago from the UK. I charged and never used it, as is must be locked or jailbreak. Even if i inserted a european sim card it only says “No sim card installed – Insert a valid Sim with no pin lock to activate the phone” I can only use it for emergency calls.
Could you please help me, i dont really know what to do? I cant even see what firmware/version is..

My friend just bought me a new Iphone from Ireland as a gift (I live in Canada)… I’m being told that there’s no unlock for the lastest Iphone 3GS … I’m not even sure of what firmware version I have as all I can do is emergency calls … I’m assuming it’s the latest one … Does anyone know if there’s a unlocking for 3GS 3.1 now?
