Tutorial: iPhone 2G Unlock Using RedSn0w

by Sebastien on June 20th, 2009

This RedSn0w guide & tutorial will show you how to unlock your iPhone 2G using RedSn0w. This guide is to unlock the iPhone 2G only. If you want to unlock the iPhone 3G, you will have to jailbreak your iPhone first using this guide, then run UltraSn0w, the unlocking tool for iPhone 3G.

This tutorial was originally written for jailbreaking firmware 3.0 but it also works with firmware 3.0.1. I just updated this guide with the latest information.

Note that this RedSn0w tutorial is for Windows users but I assume the steps are similar on a Mac.

1. Before doing anything, make sure you have the latest version of iTunes and the latest firmware 3.0 3.0.1 installed on your iPhone 2G.

2. Create a new folder on your desktop. In this folder, download RedSn0w as well as the 3.0 firmware (not 3.0.1) for your iPhone 2G from our iPhone downloads page (make sure you pick the right firmware). Also download the following bootloader files: BL 3.9 and BL 4.6

3. Unzip and launch RedSn0w.

4. Click “browse” and select the 3.0 (not 3.0.1) firmware you downloaded in a folder in step 2.

5. Once the firmware has been successfully identified, click “next”.

6. Select “install Cydia” and “unlock”, then click “next”.

7. Browse for the bootloader files you downloaded in step 2, and click “next”.

8. Make sure your iPhone is plugged into the computer and that it is off. Click “next”.

9. RedSn0w will then guide you to put your iPhone into DFU mode. Hold down the power button for 2 seconds. Without releasing the power button, also hold down the home button for 10 seconds. Without releasing the home button, release the power button but keep holding the home button for 30 seconds.

10. If done correctly, your iPhone should reboot and the jailbreak process should start. This step may take up to 15-20 minutes so be patient.

11. Once this process is over, you will get a message saying that it is “done!”

12. Click the “finish” button and reboot your iPhone. The reboot may take up to 10 minutes so again, be patient.

13. Congratulations, you just jailbroke and unlocked your iPhone 3.0 3.0.1 with RedSn0w.

  1. clear and simple instructions.. thx a lot

  2. Could not be simpler. Thanks for the tips!

Slightly different on Mac than Windows, but still, very easy to follow. Successfully unlocked iPhone 2G on T-Mo USA.

  3. Been waiting for phone to reboot for over half an hour. Is this normal? Never had to wait that long with previous versions.

    • I’ve been waiting for like an hour now… Should I just give up and try again??

    • Thanks so much! This is what I was looking for! Worked like a charm! I was getting worried about the freeze at “waiting for reboot”…

  4. Found this while looking for the BootLoader 3.9 and 4.6 thanks for posting it, very useful.

Just upped my old 2G to 3.0 and unlocked it for the Vodafone SIM I’ve been using for years. I’ve just got a 3GS too but I’m still stuck with the O2 SIM for the moment, just waiting patiently for the 3GS unlock.

    Thanks again,

  5. I’m trying to use redsn0w on a mac for iphone 2g after unsuccessful attempts using pwnagetool 3.0. I’m already running into problems. I’ve already downloaded the 3.0 firmware for 2g from your downloads page. Yet, when I try to select it when using redsn0w, there is no .ipsw file in the folder and it will not let me select anything from the folder I downloaded. I’m downloading it again, but I don’t see how that will help as I’ve already downloaded it once.

    ugh.

    • You have to remove the zip extension from the ipsw file. Go into folder options and uncheck hide extensions for known file types, then remove the zip extension from the ipsw file and you should be good to go.

      • how do you do that? on a mac? cannot figure it out and having same issue..downloaded the firmware but when i go to browse through redsnow i cannot select anything to open from the firmware file…please help

  6. @Jacob – you have to download the IPSW (firmware 3.0) as well from the download page… It doesn’t come with RedSn0w.

  9. @sweetlittlehugs – I updated the link. It’s working fine now.

  10. thanks sebastian… as always the instructions are clear like the water… thanks a lot for yor work

Sorry to keep bothering but this is my first time doing this myself. I was able to get red snow and the 3.0 firmware but I cant get the bin files to download. It only gives me the option to save or find and find does nothing. Am I doing something wrong? thanks

  12. this works great!!!!!! im am so i finally read about redsn0w. so easy!!! Thanks a lot

  13. When it says ‘Downloading Jailbreak Data…’ on my iPhone (1st gen), do I still click Finish on redsn0w? Or am I supposed to wait? Right now, redsn0w says ‘done’, but my phone still has the ‘Downloading Jailbreak Data…’ message with the loading symbol under it.

I tried two times before, with no success.

  14. sweetlittlehugs says: June 20, 2009 at 6:06 pm

WOW! It worked! If i can do it, any one can… Thanks Sebastien!

  15. sweetlittlehugs says: June 20, 2009 at 6:08 pm

@Tony, It took me three times before it worked, If you dont hold the buttons down for the exact amount of time it messes everything up.

  16. for the last step of holding Home, it says hold it for 30 seconds, but the message goes to the next screen before the 30 seconds are even up. i tried both holding it and letting go, but no success. gonna give it another go.

  17. forgot to mention: after the phone reboots, i get the itunes logo with the usb plug.

  18. i too am having problems with there not being or me not seeing an ispw file in the 3.0 firmware for 2G phone.

the link i am using is this one: http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-6580.20090617.XsP76/iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw

but it saves as zip. am i supposed to change the file type or is there supposed to be an ipsw file inside the zip?

    thanks for the help

  19. Just to provide an update:
If you have the itunes logo on your phone, you need to restore it first with itunes. Then you do the above steps.

  20. Hi all. Just letting you all know the answer to my question. IE was autoassigning the download to a zip archive. Changed the save as file type to .ipsw and everything went exceedingly smooth from there. Used the How to for the apn changer on top of that and it both guides worked like a charm. THANKS A MILLION!

  21. im not getting the option to unlock, only to install cydia

  22. @dony yeah thats what is it

  23. sweetlittlehugs says: June 20, 2009 at 7:52 pm

@Tony did it work for you finally?

  24. @dony by bad you got 2g or 3g?

  25. sweetlittlehugs says: June 20, 2009 at 7:54 pm

    @dony, Do you have a 2G or 3G? 3G cant be unlocked with Redsn0w

  26. @sweetlittlehugs

Yes, I got it to work. I had to restore my phone then jailbreak again. I think it was an issue with the phone never going to DFU mode because the iTunes logo was showing on the screen.

  27. I’m trying to use this to jailbreak me iphone but for some reason its not working rite it stop half way never goes al the way but the phone reboots anyway…….is it something that im doin wrong? NEED SOME HELP PLEASE

  28. Ok guyz i got it done i was to hold down the home button little longer…..im back in business thanks guyz

  29. I’ve been waiting for the reboot for over 30 minutes. :(
    Starting to get worried.

  30. What you got to do is keep holdin down the home button till it reboot dont let go at 30 sec keep holding till @redsnow say done then it will reboot

  31. Are you using Vista x64? Try to use windows xp instead.

  32. I’m using windows

  33. The trick is to keep holding the home button as long as it reboots!
It takes just a seconds to reboot then

install 3.0 and jailbroke, on ATT but no data service??? any ideas?

  35. Firemedic says: June 21, 2009 at 7:53 am

    Sorry iPhone 2g

  36. Hi, I’m completely new to this but find this forum really helpful. I want to unlock my 1st gen iphone which is running the new 3.0 software.

I’ve downloaded the redsn0w software and the two files BL-39 and BL-46. I’ve also downloaded the firmware file iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw.zip

When I run redsn0w it asks for the IPSW for my current firmware. That’s OK, but once the Phone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw.zip file has downloaded, it changes into a folder called iPhone1,1_3

When I browse in this folder for the IPSW using redsn0w, I can’t find anything that looks right.

Can anyone help me out, please?

  37. Further to my last posting, perhaps I should have said I’m using a intel MacBook

  38. Me again – I’ve worked out the problem, it was the way my computer dealt with downloads. I’ve followed all your simple instructions and now have an unlocked iPhone !!!!

Thank you so much for this – you guys are incredible !!!!

  39. What would be the possible reasons why my phone shows a white screen right after releasing the home button but then it goes to a black screen. After the rebooting process is done the phone goes back to the USB connect image and never gets unlocked.

    I have tried all.

    Thanks.

  40. I have no option to “unlock”. Just install Cydia and Icy. I follow the instructions exactly from REd Snow and even tried holding down the power button longer than 30 seconds. Way longer. I am getting stuck on “Waiting for Reboot” and have left it for up to 1 hour. I have tried hard reset as well. Howard forums indicate many people have had this problem but there is no real solution. Any ideas?

  41. Hi Brad,

I’m a complete novice at this, but managed to unlock my 1st gen iphone running 3.0 last night (see my comments above).

If you’re sure you are using the correct firmware version (see my comment above for the name of the one I used) then the only difference between us is that I was using a MacBook. Perhaps you could find some one with an Apple, and try it on their machine?

    Matthew

  42. I have been working on trying to fix the “waiting for reboot” problem since Saturday 1400 hrs. EST without any luck.

I have done some extensive research through the net only to find out that about 1/3 of the iPhone hacking community are having this problem without any solution other than “follow the instructions”, “read carefully”, “restore your device”, “are you a retard??”, and the list goes on and on.

I am starting to think that there is some sort of flaw in the program. But then again, if that was the case then likely it would not work for everyone not just some people.

Reality is that I have a 1st gen brick and no idea on how to fix it.

If anyone comes up with a real solution be kind to post it here.

    Thank you.

  43. I always get to the part when it says downloading jailbreak settings and then the USB and iTunes picture thing comes up again. All files are in the correct folder and I can’t see that I’ve done anything wrong :(

    Any help greatly appreciated

  44. Ditto Fonz. Hopefully someone way smarter than us figures this out and would be kind enough to post on here. As for now, my brick is collecting dust on my CPU desk while I am using the “free” Nokia phone that I got when I first joined T-mobile. :(

  45. I downloaded the 3.0 firmware for iphone (2g). but i cant reach it on red snow

  47. Now I am more inclined to think that the redsn0w 3.0 program has some sort of glitch that affects only certain 2.2.1 firmwares.

    Hear me out.

I have not been able to pass the ‘waiting for reboot’ and black screen stage of the unlocking process. But now I have discovered that, even though my phone says ‘emergency calls only’, I can make and receive phone calls. My phone actually recognizes the t-mobile sim card, but it won’t let me pass the ‘usb to itunes’ screen.

    Has anyone encountered this?

If you have been having problems with the ‘waiting for reboot’ screen, do yourself a favor and check if you can actually receive/make phone calls with your >>non designated carrier<< sim card.

    Post your comments please.

    • ShannonRose says: August 13, 2009 at 7:54 am

my phone only says emergency calls too. it doesnt say Tmobile at the top of my phone either….what can I do?

    • i have the same problem, tryed to unlock but it stays at waiting for reboot and the same as you, my phone says only emergency calls but i can make and recieve calls i only cant go to the apps and i cant find any solution on the net. if you find one please contact me.

      thanks

  48. The instruction is great!

    Works like a charm!

  49. Reply to Henrik

This is the same problem I had, that there was no .ipsw file after downloading. I then discovered that my computer was set to automatically unzip downloads. Once I turned this off, and downloaded the file again, I had a file with the ending ‘.ipsw.zip’.

I then used ‘save as’ to remove the .zip ending but leave the .ipsw ending. Redsn0w then recognised the file and it all worked fine.

Try this and see if it helps.

    Matthew

  50. Well, version 0.7.2 has been released. Has any one tried it yet?

I have with the same exact results.

I am not so freaked out since, at least, I can make and receive calls.

Sort of disappointed that I have not been able to unlock my iphone as easy as it was with 2.0, 2.2 and 2.2.1.

  51. Thanks for this great website..One of the most easiest and to the point reviews i have come across.. please include the issue about IE saving the file as a .zip in the list of instructions.. i believe that it will be very helpful to a lot of people…
BTW… does anyone know how to mask the ip address of your iphone.. i am not in the US and would like to listen to pandora..

  52. Rasta Fari says: June 23, 2009 at 8:41 am

Followed the steps to a point, got in done first try in less than 10 minutes. I installed cydia and icy, which caused both programs to not work, so I re did the jailbreak with just cydia checked and not icy, and then when I turned on the phone, both programs were there and they worked SUPER! Thanks to the person who posted this, good karma awaits you. ~One Love

  53. I’m a newbie at this too…

so before I do anything I have to plug my 2G iphone into iTunes and upgrade to 3.0 first? The phone is currently unlocked and jailbroken so upgrading will lock it again. I don’t wish to do this unless I must in order to upgrade to 3.0 and then unlock/jailbreak using the instructions above.

so after upgrade to 3.0 then proceed to using redsn0w etc to unlock and jailbreak?

    iphone 2G
    windows XP

    thanks

  54. @Joe

Joe, if I could do it all over again, I would wait for the bugs to be worked out of this redsnow thing.

If you research you will find out that half the people are having problems with ‘waiting for reboot’ and the phone never really gets unlocked.

In my opinion, if you try to unlock the 3.0 version you have a 50/50 chance to succeed.

  55. There is a problem when i download the the redsnow and reboot my device it worked correctly but then again when i tryed to call sumbodi i cant hear them nor they can here me!! Can sumbodi help me!!

  56. Success at last.

While testing some program under Windows 7 I took a stab at running redsn0w 0.7.2 to try (for the millionth time) to unlock my phone. And g/d it worked!!

    I love Windows 7!!!!

And thanks to the dev team of course!!!!

  57. I followed all steps. After all is done I get the bootneuter screen and tells me that there is a communications pThe phone is activated and cydia is installed and works after updating itself but no tmoblile love. Any suggestions?

  58. For all MAC users who are having trouble with the “waiting for reboot” issue, I had the same problem and followed all the instructions i could find on Google with no avail.

I did however, realize i was using Mac OS X 10.5.6

I immediately updated to 10.5.7, restarted my Macbook Pro and tried the whole process again and it worked flawlessly.

So i recommend all you Mac users with the reboot error to check that you have the latest Mac OS X update (10.5.7)

    it should work!

    cheers!

    -R

  59. When unlocking, does the SIM need to be in the phone?

  60. LOL guys… I had the same reboot problem. All I did was restart the computer and switch USB ports!!!!!

    Try it!

  61. Hi,
I just want to know fom those who jb your 2G with Redsn0w, i that HD picture at Downloading Jailbreak data appears before or after the programm says DONE!.
Cause for me it keeps comming after and when the reboot finish, my iphone enter in recovery mode.
Can you explain me what should I do?

  62. Os..Other question….I need to process again the redsnow, but my iphone is on recovery mode. How can I put it off to Redsn0w let it ino DFU mode?

  63. Hey,….anybody here??? Can some1 helpppppp!!! (I post my issues right up)
    Pleaseeeeeeeeeeee…urgent!!!
    I´m getting crazy!!!!

  64. I got past the Waiting for reboot issue by using iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw instead of iPhone1,2….

  65. I got the freezing everywhere issue, without the uploading ramdisk message, or got a white screen and an instant DONE & Finish, and the iPhone was in a zombie state, not awake but not off (with a dark blue backlight). I started iTunes and entered recovery mode and suddenly redsn0w was able to reboot and upload ramdisk and got the Finish screen (had to murder iTunes instantly) and I am still waiting for my phone to wake up (same as before) … I am patent, but should I be naive? iTunes sais the phone is in recovery mode (if I hold the two buttons down for a long time I can start the whole thing again).
I’m using the latest of almost everything (vista 64 sp2, iTunes 8.2, iPone 2G, and had the 2.2 software installed on it previously).

  66. TidleyWinks says: June 26, 2009 at 7:50 pm

DO NOT use redsn0w 7.2 to jailbreak 3.0 on 3G – it is BROKEN. Your phone WILL BE BRICKED. Both iTunes 8.2 & redsn0w 7.2 are unable to recover in DFU mode after attempted upgrade. Wait until a legitimate version of QuickPwn is made available for Windows.

  67. Okay, so I’ve seriously yanked hair out with this update.

I’ve had the bootloaders, I updated to 3.0 via iTunes, and I’ve downloaded the 3.0 firmware to my desktop. I’ve downloaded redsn0w.

When I open redsn0w and click browse, I find my firmware on my desktop which LOOKS normal, but when I select it, it reads “Unable to recognize specified IPSW”.

    Help?
I’ve downloaded the firmware from like, 3 different sites. All are 229mb, so I’m pretty sure it’s legit.

    • ShannonRose says: August 13, 2009 at 7:57 am

even if your phone is 3.0.1 firmware (you should update to this) you still need to select the 3.0 firmware when redsnow asks you

  68. @Rob

    0) Get a windows XP, don’t use it on vista (especially 64x)!
    1) Download the firmware (it has direct links to apple) and the bootloaders from http://iphonefreakz.com/iphone-firmwares/.
    2) Get redsn0w 7.2 from http://theiphoneproject.org/windows/redsn0w-win_0.7.2.zip
    3) Update to iTunes 8.2
    4) Plug the iPhone directly via USB, DON’T USE THE DOCK (EVIL way: http://www.ilikemyiphone.com/wp-content/uploads/6_20_07_iphone_dock_1.jpg , OK: http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/5272/19987761.jpg )
    5) Update in iTunes with shift click to update and select the downloaded firmware, just to be sure that it matches the one you will select from redsn0w (took me about 5-10 minutes).
    6) Update with redsnow (~10 minutes), select Cydia and Unlock, if you have 2G (some report Icy is buggy, don’t select that). You should see the iphone rebooting several times and pictures of a cute walking [pine]apple, even after redsn0w shows finish.

I guess that should do it!

Thanks for the comments that helped me from 2AM to 5AM, ’till i figured it out :) ).

    • Hi i have tried it you way still no good. The ipod just says ” no sim card installed insert a valid sim with ni pin lock to activate iphone”!!!! help please

  69. redsn0w 7.2 is NOT broken – if you un-click Cydia and clicked Icy, then you run into this problem where the iPhone just hangs and repeated reboots. I would suggest to install both Cydia and Icy. Also, you must have iPhone OS 3.0 already installed before you run redsn0w 7.2.

  70. Muchas Gracias¡¡¡¡

    Excelente y facilisimo pude recuperar mi Iphone 2g y actualizarlo……..Thanks a lot

  71. after the unlock, its been trying to restart for 20 mins……did I do something wrong? the unlocking went fine, it just wont turn on at the end

  72. Done!. It worked at the secont try…

But now, with itunes 8.2 it says it can’t recognize my iphone, so i can’t sincronize music and applications… (email and contacts is made via exchange…)

I downsized to itunes 8.1… and says that I need itunes 8.2… we have a loop =8-O

How can I restore my music and applications? Must I keep stuck to iphone 2.2?

    Please, any hekp?

  73. Thanks sebastian for the post. I’ve jailbreak my iphone 2g. Didn’t had to take it to the shop and spend X amount of money.

  76. Hi-

I have a 2G iPhone with the latest version of iTunes, the 3.o FW installed, the ispw file and boot loaders downloaded however when I try to jailbreak my phone it just hangs on the first “waiting for reboot.” I’ve let it sit overnight now but no progress. Any idea what I might be doing wrong?

    Thanks!

  77. @mk
you have to hold down the home button untill you see the phone reboots. After your good to go

  78. @stephan

thanks for the quick response. holding home doesnt do anything. if you are talking about the last step on the sequence of timed steps (power 2 sec, power + home for 10, home for 30) i’ve done that and it seems to work through that step. thereafter redsn0w 0.72 runs a series of actions and then gets to waiting for reboot stage. thats where it hangs. i’ve read on a few sites that this can get up to 20min while the ramdisk uploads. i’ve let it still of hour(s) on more than one occasion and nothing changes so i presume its hanging.

this morning i pressed power and home for a ~15sec and then power again and the phone started normally but no cydia or icy so i assume its not jailbroken.

    thanks for the help!!

  79. Hi everyone!

I have a brand new original 2g iPhone right out of the box. Took an old one I bought the first day that I later cracked the screen to the apple store, paid $200, and they gave me this. (I have upgraded to a 3g iphone sometime ago for my att service.)

I want to use this one as an iPod touch via wifi (contacts, email, app store, etc) and in a few months go out of country and use a digicell sim in it.

My question is, Where do I start? When I turn it on it shows a plug pointing to itune logo with “no sim card installed. Insert a valid sim card with no pin unlock to activate iphone” message over it.

I don’t want to mess up. don’t know what firmware etc. is there.

    What do I do first?

    Thanks,
    Jim

For all people who have problems with “Waiting for reboot…”. I had this problem and my solution is disconnect the usb cable and then reconnect again while is waiting for that. Then the jailbreak process will start.

    Try it, and good luck.

Looks like I’m going to be making a trip to AT&T

  89. Redsn0w crashes right after it asks me to hold the home button for 30 secs.

After reading the problems here, I think these people that wrote this crack should have tested it more before releasing it.

I Jailbroke my iPhone 2G 8GB with redsn0w, and checked off Cydia and Unlock while going through the process. It wasn’t unlocked. It just sais Locked SIM. I tried Boot Neuter, It would just make it do the _ _ _ _ 0 bars thing, without a carrier name beside it, then switch to no service then switch to Locked SIM. Are there are settings I’m forgetting, or missed? My Boot Neuter settings are : 4.6 , Neuter On , Fake Blank Off , Unlock On. I’m running 3.0 FW by the way.

  94. I have a question… I already unlocked my iphone 2G a while ago and I want to update the phone with the new updates apple is offering. Can I update my phone and reunlock the phone. I had to with witht the last update. )I dont want update and then not be able to unlock the phone.)

  95. GUYS! THIS INFO IS FOR THE ONE WHO’S HAVING PROBLEMS WITH NOT REBOOT AFTER JAILBREAK STARTS. I SPENT 2 DAYS FOR THIS PROBLEM, DID A LOT OF DANCES WITH THE TAMBOURINE ON MY MACHINE, NOTHING HELPED. BUT WHEN I TRIED IT ON MY SISTER’S (OLDER) MACHINE EVERYTHING GOES WELL FOR THE FIRST TIME, SO, THERE IS FOR SURE SOME KIND OF SOFT\HARD INCOMPATIBILITY WITH SOME PCS AND iPHONES (MAY BE USB 1.1\2.0 CONNECTION MODE?). SO BELIEVE THAT YOU CAN, DOWNLOAD ITUNES, REDSNOW AND THE FILES AND GO FOR ANOTHER MACHINES FOR LUCK. LUCK ALL OF YOU GUYS FIGHTING WITH JOBS’S SHIT IN GALOSH.

  96. Sebastien, thank you for your guide! The installation process was quick, easy and painless!

  97. HI . I’ve unlocked my iphone 2g with redsnow but after that, I’ve been having problems with Wifi, it does not working, and it’s not even detecting the networks. Somebody told me the problem was with the baseband but I don’t know what to do.

    All comments are helpful.

    thanks!!

  98. Hi .
I’ve unlocked my iphone 2g with redsnow I have the 3.0 installed.
I’ve been having problems with wifi, it’s not working anymore . I run the process again and nothing.

    Help pleaseee

    thanks!!

  99. when it hangs at reboot, unplug and plug back in.

    Sorted

  100. how do i install the firmware 3.0 to iphone? my phone is already locked : (

    • Put the phone to the DFU mode and then upload using Shift + Recovery the needed firmware file …

      • i got to DFU mode, but my itune does not seems to response. : ( and one more thing, how do i put my phone out of the DFU mode? and don’t i need to have my phone already in 3.0?

      • DFU mode is hardware specific mode … to get out of it you have to push together power+ home buttons and hold for more than 10 seconds …
        > i got to DFU mode, but my itune does not seems to response. :
try to do the same as written in the manual above just until the moment phone hangs, then disonnect the cable, close red snow, open i tunes and connect cable …

  101. Redsn0w’s first step in getting you to enter DFU mode is to hold down the power button for 3 sec. This is turning the phone on, preventing you from entering DFU mode. I was having the same problem, with it being stuck on “downloading jailbreak data…”

TURN THE PHONE OFF, as redsn0w tells you to, but ignore the first step on the nest screen. DO NOT HOLD DOWN THE POWER BUTTON FOR 3 SECONDS.

Just be ready to do the next step of holding down the power and home buttons for 10 seconds and step 3; releasing the power button, but continue to hold down the home button. Then you’ll be in DFU mode.

They should update their software, because it’s giving people the wrong instruction.

  102. Cool gravitar worked. OK guys, based of bits of information and the main guide itself, I am writing my own guide on how to do jailbreak a 3gs with 3.0.1 OS usi9ng a PC w/ windows vista home premium and internet access. It should be pretty complete. I am writing it for myself to avoid all the problems you guys have run into – not that this guide isn’t good – it’s fantastic I just understand my own writing better. When I am finished with it I will jailbreak the phone and (assuming it works) anyone who wants a copy is welcome to it. It is just a txt file so when I finish it I will let you know and you can email me to request a copy. Hope I can be helpful. Let the noob gather all the info and figure it out LOL – there are even links to the software. And warnings about how to avoid little problems. Actually if it works I’ll be proud of myself, I haven’t been a hacker since high school LOL. Um yeah and I am still waiting for a knowledgeable person to email me for correspondence.

  103. I’ve being waiting for more than half and hour aat “Please wait while your device is being jailbroken. Waiting for reboot.”

    What can I do now?

  104. I cannot locate the ipsw file and I have tried EVERYTHING. I have the zipped (compressed) file on my computer. I have tried unzipping it, and even opening the zipped folder with redsn0w. Where do I go from here??? I have windows.

    • Use the Mozilla FireFox browser to download the firmware (software update)! It will retain the file extension (.ipsw) and not associate it with any compression utilities (.zip) you may have installed on your machine. Hope this helps!

  105. thx alot guys
I tried a lot of stuff and this worked from 1st time
    great job thx again

  107. I am very bad at following written instructions* and I found this VERY easy to follow and helpful. Thanks!

  108. I followed the instructions and it was freezing on rebooting first 3 times. Finally it worked and after it said “done” and i pushed finished i could not reboot it or do anything to it. It doesn’t charge and doesn’t respond to anything. I tried holding home and power buttons and nothing happens. Do you have any suggestions?? I can’t put it in DFU mode.

  109. I am tryging to upload the firmware that I downloaded on the browse section but it is saying that it can’t recognize it and sometimes I search the firware on the folder that I saved it on but I can’t find it.Says that no items match your search. Help please

    • Did you unzip the file? redsn0w can’t read the compressed (zipped) file. Unzip the file with a winzip related program and then search and select the file you’ve downloaded.

      • now it is even weird…my iphone 2g was upgraded through itunes to the 3.0.1 firmware and just after the upgrade it said the it could not support my carieer( tmobile). It only always emergency outgoing calls but allows incoming calls from anyone. I don’t understand, what can I do. Does it need jailbreak or unlock or both? Still wen I try download the firmware and add it to the browse section it says that it is not being recognized or no item matches the search. Can someone help please…

      • Use the Mozilla FireFox browser to download the firmware (software update)! It will retain the file extension (.ipsw) and not associate it with any compression utilities (.zip) you may have installed on your machine. Hope this helps!

  110. Hey i need some help! I’m trying to update to 3.0.1, ive downloaded the software from itunes- but you said to download the 3.0 firmware and not 3.1-wont this keep my version at 3.0?
So my question is, use 3.0 firmware or 3.1?

  111. i hacked my phone and got it working with the 3.0 firmware…..the only problem is whenever i install from cydia and have to reboot my phone, it freezes…..any ideas?

  112. I ran redsn0w with out issue. But after the reboot I get a bootneuter cannot talk to the bootloader error. Any ideas?

  113. well i think i figured out what was wrong…..when i ran redsn0w i ticked the “unlock” box as well but my phone is previously pwned so that wasn’t needed. also i’m purty sure after i downloaded mipatch 2.2.1 from the cydia repository it would freeze my iphone. so far everything is working fine and my iphone hasn’t frozen and i’m running 3.0 like a champ

  114. I have this really nice motorcycle I bought in 2005. It is a Suzuki Hayabusa. It’s a nice enough bike on its own, but I’d sure like to put some custom stuff on it; say; a two stage turbo, some nice chrome handlebar grips, and maybe some alternate foot pegs.

Oh, wait… I can only buy parts from my Suzuki dealer and they don’t stock, nor can they order any of these items I want. The dealer wants $230 for a front tire… http://www.ronayers.com/ can ship the same tire for $130, and I can dismount/mount/balance all my own tires with a http://www.nomartirechanger.com/. What about other replacement parts or standard consumables like brake pads? I don’t want to pay dealer prices. Why should I have to? I enjoy and know how to maintain my own motorcycles. Not everybody does. And that is fine.

What does this have to do with Apple and iPhones? A lot! Ever since the day we figured out how to make interchangeable parts, we created diversity, corporate competition, etc. Just think about what that did for us. Now Apple wants to undo that. Are they the first? No! IBM tried this very same thing with the PC; Dell tried this very same thing with their servers. Proprietary hardware to lock the customer in to not having any other avenue for support or extending their options. Our government is trying to do this to us in the realm of health care. Capitalism.

I read a discussion yesterday and a commenter stated that most ‘JailBreak’ers were juvenile and had no reasoning skills to defend why they JailBreak their iPods/iPhones. What a narrow minded dope addict he is. He is the kind of person that operates at the same level of a wild beast; with a proper fitting bridle, his head can be turned and his mind bent into believing his captivity is freedom.

  125. POSSIBLE SOLUTION TO BEING STUCK ON REBOOT. I tried everything else I’d read here and other forums. This is an odd solution; but it worked. I got stuck on reboot and started iTunes. It immediately said that I needed to restore; so I did….after the 3.0.1 restore image downloaded and got to the “preparing image for restore” (or something like that) the iPhone booted and immediately, redsn0w continued it’s loading process (i still had it open!). I quickly opened task manager and killed the itunes process to allow redsn0w to finish. it worked fine after that. PS: it took 20 min to boot after the “done” notification.

  126. Worked like a charm! yay (3.0.1 isn’t THAT important but I don’t wanna take risks)

  127. Hi all,

I am a noob. I have an iphone 2G that has just be updated to 3.0.1 firmware. I want to know if I should choose the 3.0.1 ipsw or still use the 3.0 ipsw. I also want to know in case it does not work, can I still hard reset the phone to the present state, i.e., before applying RedSn0ow. Finally, do I need to do anything with the bootloaders or does RedSn0w automatically access them? TIA

    Cool

  128. THANK YOU!!!!!this worked out so well…no drama at all!!!!!thank you much!!!

  129. Total noob, here.

    Had to try twice.

Following the instructions exactly on a friend’s old phone, fully loaded with all his stuff, but no SIM, it seemed to work fine, but on the final reboot, the iPhone hung at the apple and never restarted.

After restoring to factory settings, it worked like a charm on the second try.

You really should add a note about the IE issue with the firmware image downloading as a .zip file instead of a .ipsw file. (Renaming the file from .zip to .ipsw works fine.)

    Thanks for the simple guide!

  130. I just upgraded from 3.0 to 3.1 on my old workhorse 1st gen iPhone and it went without a hitch.

I’ve done it a couple of times before but this walkthrough was a very useful guide to keep me on the right path. Thanks!

  131. Unplugging the USB cable and plugging it back in worked for me too. Great hint!

  132. Mac users, when restoring your phone on itunes and updating to the newest firmware, are we able to do the “shift + restore”? It doesn’t seem to work on the mac because after i push restore i do not get the option of restoring it different firmwares.

I have a 2g phone and i’m having difficulty unlocking it. I wonder if it has anything to do with the newest firmware being 3.1 instead of 3.0. can anyone shed some light?

  133. I am getting a problem with redsn0w 7.2 hanging on the “waiting for reboot” I’ve tried to un-plug the USB and plug back in but that doesn’t seem to work – How long do you wait after un-plugging it then plugging it back in??. Should I try the suggestion to skip step 1 and NOT hold down the sleep button for 2 sec. and just do step 2 & 3?? Please help, ANY suggestions?

  134. if you have any problem with redsnow not recognizing ipsw files use firefox to do the download and redsnow browe will have no problem.
I have not been able to finish because I stll hav the ” please wait while your device is beiing jailbroken. and the waiting for reboot messages

You said you waited 20 min after redsnow was done, how do you know when the reboot is finished?. I did what you said and am still waiting.

  137. Don’t know if it has worked, although suspect not.
When going into DFU mode the iPhone starts doing stuff before 30 seconds are up
All stages seem to have taken place
Done message comes up before Jailbreak data fully downloaded

Try 2 Rebooted after the Downloading Jailbreak data stage finished.
Both the above resulted in the request to connect to iTunes and activation through AT&T.

Questions previously asked on some of the above items not yet answered (I couldn’t find them anyway), and still would like to know which, if any, SIM card heeds to be in the phone.

    Cheers all

  138. Hello, have followed this guide step by step when i run redsn0w it gets to ramdisk then comes up saying redsn0w has stopped working, i am running win vista, not sure what i am doing wrong, but feel like throwing my iphone 2g against the wall, please help me

  139. Hey,

Downloaded everything and followed the steps, everything went well and it said ‘done!’ within about 45 seconds. But my phone is stuck on the screen with a hard drive, ‘downloading jailbreak data’ and little spinning circle.

  141. EDIT WARNING :
not100% sure but I think that advice here which was good at the time is now dangerous. previous blog entries have suggested that you need to restore via iTunes to get a clean base for the unlock. I did this and now assume (no way to tell) that 3.1 is now installed, and this at the moment is not unlockable.

    See http://forum.theiphoneblog.com/iphone-jailbreak-unlock/178397-urgent-all-jailbreakers.html

  142. i followed all step and it is done and finised! but after reboot my iphone 2G… it still the same problem… locked… what should i do?

  144. Hey I have an IPhone 2g 8gb that I was using with T-Mobile, I hooked it up to my friends computer and now it says emergency calls only, I messed with redsnow and all that stuff ya’ll are talking about and now it’s stuck on the connect to itunes screen, what do I do, a guy said it was bricked?

  145. Bryon, I had the same problem with it being stuck in reboot (I have a 2G). Someone else mentioned to unplug and re-plug the iphone usb cable. This worked like a charm. Hope this helps.

    FOR THOSE HAVING TROUBLE STILL:

I am a newbie with this, and I at first had trouble finding the firmware, after locating it in my downloaded section, i made it into a shortcut on my desktop and it was easy to then locate.

YET…after the whole JAILBREAKING process finished, it still showed me the connect to Itunes image.

SO finally I decided to look in Youtube, and lo and behold, this video appeared:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyg8NKl01Sc&feature=fvw

FINALLY have my phone unlocked. When the guy tells you to open Quickpwn (cause that’s what he uses, you redo the redsn0w version. it’s the same thing)

Then you get a pineapple image and when you see that, the process is going right.

I hope this works for those who still have trouble.

My only issue im trying to figure out is Itunes is telling me if I wish to sync up with the computer. Yet I’m afraid doing so would cause the phone to unlock. I’m still asking about it, so if i find the answer I’ll let you all know!

    Good Luck!

    Hope this helps!

  147. I jailbreaked my iPhone 2G OS 3.0 using redsn0w and above method. At that time, I chose only install Cydia (& left install Icy and Unlock iphone unchecked). Now I want to proceed with the unlcok. I have downlaoed the 2 bin files. Should I follow the same procedure and now just choose unlock phone (& leave install Cydia and install Icy unchecked)?
Also, is it okay to sync a jailbreaked (& potentially unlocked) iPhone using iTunes? Just sync (not update).
    Thanks. -BJ.

What I know is you are suppose to check both cydia and unlock. I never tried it separated. You could try, if not do both again, together this time.

Yeah you could sync, not update. But what will happen is you might get a warning saying that if you wish to restore your old settings. That means iTunes still recognizes the phone, and you have to remove recognition, so it wont ask you that again, and just let you sync. what you need to do is go to EDIT >PREFERENCE

    then this window pops up:

    http://i38.tinypic.com/2ueilo0.jpg

You click on the tab that says Devices.

You click on the info it has on the box, and then click on Delete Backup.

Finally, if you wish, you can check on prevent iPods and iPhones from syncing automatically.

That annoys me. But again up to you.

    Hope this helped!

  149. Okay, so I did manage to unlock it. This time I just clicked Unlosk phone (left Install Cydia & Install Icy unchecked). I think it jailbreaked the phone again and also unlocked it. I tested it with T-mobile SIM card & that worked. My already installed Cydia (during the 1st jailbreak) & Icy (after the 1st jailbreak) remained intact. Just FYI for others.

  151. i have the iphone 2g. i unlocked and jailbroke it a few months ago. i stupidly decided to try and update it on my itunes (to get pic msg) etc. now the phone recognizes my tmobile network and sim card but will not let me get into the phone. it will only let me “slide for emergency” – so it is no longer jailbroken. i have tried to jail break again…and again and again with no success.

any suggestions? what can i doooo??

  152. hi guys, after running redsn0w it goes through the downloading jailbreak data screen and finishes and then the itunes logo appears with the usb and the symbol of the lock above it is still locked..should it not be unlocked by then…I’m trying to unlock my friends phone but its not working and when connecting to itunes it says “sim card is not supported, etc etc”…please help…I’ve used redsn0w before to unlock my iphone without any problems and I remember when doing mine that the little lock symbol was unlocked when I did it

  153. Clear and easy to follow instructions. I was lost until I found your page. I had to downgrade the 2G from 3.2.1 (accidental upgrade) to 3.0 first then used these instructions and links to jailbreak and unlock. Worked great. Thanks!

  154. I have successfully completed all the steps but the phone reads the t mobile sim, but the screen is still on the itunes and usb cord. any ideas what to do next.?

  155. nervous to lock up i-phone back to og settings
and then perhaps I’ll be F••KT not having my unlocked freedoms I have become so acustomed to….. if anyone can help Re: (not a 3g)!!! Cheers mates…. Z

by the way for the people who get the stupid itunes activation icon on their screens u need to find a way to by pass it and sync the iphone on itunes.. i found a program but i dont have the link its called iH8snow

  157. It says unable to recognize IPSW any ideas

  158. Help,
I followed ur instructions and when Redsn0w said finished a russian guy showed up and is saying something in russian. from then on it keeps rebooting !! heeelp

  159. very important thing what is missing in this tutorial…(for me because i had restored iphone locked with unnamed firmware) is that you have to get your iphone into recovery mode (push home and power button for about20 sec maybe longer) and get shift+click on restore and find downloaded firmware 3.0 or 3.1 …i had issues, but after i realize this it worked…so i was succesfull…jupeeej :D

  160. Redsn0w will not unlock my phone. I used blackra1n and did a jail break but I cannot complete the unlock because I get no signal from my sim.
    I need help please

    IMPORTANT: ( for 2G on 3.2 onwards):

    I had problem unlocking using this procidure as my 2G phone was running on firmware 3.2.1;
    Later I downgraded my firmware to 3.0 and this procidure worked fine;

For downgrading to any other firmware fire the iTunes and hold SHIFT and click update and update the firmware by pointing to a correct firmware (ipsw) file.

    Cheers :)

  162. I am trying to unlock an iphone 2G. When I switch it on it says that I need to put a SIM card in in order to activate the phone – and wont do anything else – which is preventing me from understanding the firmware version it has installed.

The phone was originally purchased in late 2007.

I just put the phone in dfu mode connected to itunes and restored it to factory settings.

Suggestions on how to proceed now using the instructions above? which version of firmware should I use?

    Tim

  163. I’m having a little trouble with this. Can I please get some help? I have a 2G running 3.1.2. I’ve already upgraded to a 3GS so this one has no AT&T account (unless I swap sims) and doesn’t sync to iTunes. I’ve tried running the program, select the right ispw file (I believe), select the two bin files, and go through the DFU process. Things seem to start, and the iphone says “Downloading jailbreak data.” The software tells me it’s done after like 45 seconds. I select finish and wait for the iPhone to do its thing (usually another 5-10 minutes). After it reboots, there’s no sign of Cydia. It’s as if nothing has happened.

Anyone have any ideas? I’m pretty novice at this sort of stuff and have been reading forum after forum trying to figure something out.

    Greg,

I had the same issue; see my comment above, let me know if that helps.

  165. I have an unlocked 2g phone which I upgraded to firmware 3.1.2 by mistake.
I tried blackrain to unlock it but it didn’t work.
I finally unlocked it by downgrading to firmware 3.0, thereafter using redsnow and bootneuters 3.9 and 4.6.
Initialy the Notes facility didn’t work but I corrected that by downloading Mobile Terminal, afterwhich I deleted the corrupted files.
I tried a similar idea to rectify the problem of text messages that when replied to are returning to a new screen, preventing an on screen multiple text and reply conversation to take place.
Is there a wizz kid out there that can resolve my problem?

  166. OK, this is a good site but the instructions are not exactly correct. For the jailbreak and unlock to work (it worked for me on a first try) one has to do these EXACT steps (i figured if out by reading the above almost 200 comments):

Upgrade to newest 9.0 itune on a XP PC.
    Download 3.0 ipsw, BL39, BL46, and redsn0w 0.7.2
Connect iphone by USB and turn it off (note: there should be no SIM card).
Do DFU restore (10s power/home+30s home).
In itunes, when a window notifying about reset iphone pops up, click OK to close and then hold SHIFT KEY and hit RESTORE icon, then select the saved 3.0 ipsw.
It will take a few minutes to load 3.0 FW to iphone, then turn it off (keep it connected all the time).
Start the saved redsn0w and select the saved 3.0 ipsw.
Check Cydia and Unlock boxes, select BL39, BL46 files when prompted.
Do proper DFU restore when prompted by redsn0w, forget the onscreen instructions (wrong) use the 10s power/home+30s home routine.
The redsn0w will finish in a few minutes, but iphone will keep loading files and restarting a few times. Dont touch anything or disconnect. I did not click finish in redsnow until it was all over (~20 min).
When the iphone shows earth picture and No sim comment (but not the connect to itunes picture), the phone is unlocked.
Turn it off and load your GSM SIM card.
    That’s it.

  167. I have accidentally upgraded iphone 2G 3.1.2. Now I am not able to make calls due to “No Service”.

However, my phone is unlock and jailbrack. Everything is working fine except call service.

    Guys, please help?

  169. I have an unlocked 2g phone which I upgraded to firmware 3.1.2 by mistake.
the thing is the is lock and unlocked!!!! it says only emergency calls but I called any number and talk without problem. the problem is that I can’t see the menu neither get access to anything. It shows to plug the iPhone with iTune like it’s not unlocked. I tried this process three times in the correct way (I jailbrok many times the iPhone coz I have like two years now) and the result like nothing happening.
I didn’t try yet any other method so far but thought may be somebody had experience something similar.

  186. I’ve just finished everything up to Step 11 and on the iphone it say “DOWNLOADING DATA”, do i have to wait??? Also in Step 12 where it says “reboot your iPhone” does that mean restore it on itunes or just turn it on and off???

    It’s not possible Jonny

  188. You’re all a bunch of noobs and alot of the information is wrong!

    1. Im using Windows Vist 64x

    2. Save some time and put your phone into DFU mode before you start.

    3. Have all your files in one spot ready to go.

    4. Start Redsnow

    5. Select firware (2g 3.0 which you will have downloaded before hand)

    6. Select both corresponding boot loaders (also downloaded before hand)

    7. Upon clicking next it shall skip the DFU mode tutorial as it will recognize your phone in DFU mode immediately.

If you dont know what DFU mode is, GTS! (Google That Shit)

    @ Buy Flowers N Cakes:

Why begin a task without knowing what you’re doing. Reasearch it. If you want to save your misses phone. Put into DFU mode, open itunes, goto iphone, hold shift (Windows) or command (MAC) and click restore. Then surf to the firmware you downloaded (3.0) and start again.

The level of stupidity most people asking questions here can be solved with a quick search on google. F**kin lay abouts, sometimes you actually have to do the work yourself. Go figure.

  189. Hey Great work “RUSTY”

    Buy Flowers N Cakes –

    Steps to down-grade!

    1. Download the correct firmware i.e ipsw file from the internet to your desktop
2.Fire the iTunes and hold SHIFT and click update and update the firmware by pointing the downloded firmware (ipsw) file

I didn’t have to put my phone to DFU mode to downgrade.

  192. I’ve read every comment and am still stuck as a few others have been.

2g phone. I’m not sure what firmware is on it, but everything seems to point to 3.0. I’ve done everything and it gets me to the HD with the arrow and Downloading Jailbreak Data… with the spinning wheel then I wait 20 mins and it re-boots but puts my phone into the Itunes logo with the USB plug but no “slide to unlock” Just the logo and USB. Any suggestions?

  193. Nope, i aint someones dad thankfully, just a 24 year old with a passion.

    @ Houser:

Dude, how can you tell if you cant get past itunes logo. Forget what you think it has and put 3.0 on in DFU mode.
Then start the steps for redsnow…

  194. Kill me now with nasty but clever put downs but this makes no sense to me: “download RedSn0w as well as the 3.0 firmware (not 3.0.1) for your iPhone 2G from our iPhone downloads page (make sure you pick the right firmware).” Confusing because at the beginnng of the post, it says this jailbreak works for 3.0.1 on a 2G phone; to add to the confusion, 3.0.1 firmware is made available on the download page. So what to do? Am I downgrading from 3.0.1 to 3.0 to make this work? I have and old iPhone with version 3.0.1. Perhaps I’m mixing up firmware, versions, whatever, but aint crystal clear.

  195. @ Jack Comment #195 December 5th, 2009 at 4:49 pm Thanks man ur post really helped to the point. I read almost every post and couldn’t make sense of anything that was being said. Happy Iphoning

Hi my 2G iphone is currently jailbroken, my sim card reads on the phone.
However after I factory reset the phone, my phone is now bricked ( has the connect to itunes sign).

Must I jailbreak my phone again, or is there some way to just allow the phone to be recognised to itunes and the software installed in the phone.

Your help would be greatly appreciated :)

  204. Again, I can guarantee this guide works 100% as well as the previous Sebastien’s “Unlock your iPhone 2G with QuickPwn (2.1 firmware)”! Now I “updated” my 2G from 2.1 to 3.0.1. firmware :) .

Unlock & Jailbroke my iPhone 2G under 5 minutes, flawlessly! Just follow the steps carefully!

Clear & pure quality – Thank you so much for this :) !

  206. perfectly done, thank you very much

  207. got a question here.

how about the 3.1.2 firmware? should it work with this step?
i.g my firmware is 3.1.2 and then i take the step above instead of
3.0 firmware i should change it to 3.1.2 firware so that its updated?

please reply if its work. thank you

  208. SO, here’s a question for everyone. I am not very intelligent when it comes to this stuff (I have a massive collection of “For Dummies” books. I have an iPhone 2nd Gen with the 3.1.3 firmware. WHat do I need to download from the download page to jailbreak and unlock it? One part says 3.0 redsnow, one says 0.9.3 and I am now officially confused.
Or should I just fork out the money to one of these sites to pay for the software and instructions to do it?

  209. For those who relentlessly get the USB connect to Itunes after running the resn0w… When it is stuck on slide to use for emergency screen limited use after jailbreaking… I found a solution. You must restore the 2Giphone to an older (3.0) firmware first, using the method of restoring with Itunes and pressing SHIFT while pressing the restore button, and when it brings up the options you select the OLDER version you downloaded for the older firmware.
Once it restores it to the older (3.0) firmware you can then run the redsn0w again and choose the same firmware, and it will work this time. I did it every other way imaginable, but the only way it worked was to use the Itunes restore, and restoring to older version.
To do this, open itunes. Hold the Power and Round (Home) button BOTH together for 10 seconds and when it restarts you hold ONLY the HOME button. This will show you a simple USB and itunes logo, which is the restore screen. Itunes will give you the message of needing to restore it, and you say OK. Then WHILE PRESSING SHIFT you select the Restore button, which will bring up the browse box. YOu then find the previously downloaded firmware.
    It finally worked.

  210. I attempted to restore my I phone 2g but after I thought I was done,it went off and the message saying my ”sim card is not supported” appeared and it has continued to be so.It also says that I should ”insert the SIM CARD which came with my i phone ”while of course there was non! How do I unlock my phone or sim card/jailbrake in order to use the phone again. It is even difficult to know whether there is a firmware in the phone since I cannot even access it!
    Please help me?

  211. Chris, I paid for one of those website’s “unlock your phone” softwares and I’m here now. I thought it would be easier than having to follow such a tutorial as this, but three hours into it and $29.95 poorer, I ended up here. The “software” I paid for is just a tutorial like this one, where you have to go through all of these steps, so it is basically a scam. Unfortunately, I tried this redsn0w one twice and it also has failed to work for me. Feel lucky for all those guys who get it to run perfectly on the first try!

  214. do this progress with or without the sim card in?

  215. thanks,

this is exactly what some people are doing and charging for it !!!

    thanks !!!!

now I need to get my TMOBILE SIM to work.

    any ideas ?
