381 CommentsThis RedSn0w guide & tutorial will show you how to use RedSn0w to jailbreak your iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, or iPod Touch 2G. Note that this step is required to unlock your iPhone 3G using UltraSn0w later on. For more information about the latest jailbreak methods for each iPhone, I recommend you read this before doing anything.
This guide is for PC users but I assume the steps are very similar on Mac. If you want to build custom firmware files with more flexibility it is suggested that you use PwnageTool on Mac OS X (PwnageTool jailbreak tutorial – PwnageTool unlock guide).
1. Before doing anything, make sure you have the latest version of iTunes and the latest firmware 3.0 installed on your iPhone.
2. Create a new folder on your desktop. In this folder, download RedSn0w as well as the latest 3.0 firmware for your iPhone from our iPhone downloads page (make sure you pick the right firmware).
3. Unzip and launch RedSn0w.
4. Click “browse” and select the 3.0 firmware you downloaded in a folder in step 2.
5. Once the firmware has been successfully identified, click “next”.
6. Select “install Cydia” and click “next”.
7. Make sure your iPhone is plugged into the computer and that it is off. Click “next”.
8. RedSn0w will then guide you to put your iPhone into DFU mode. Hold down the power button for 2 seconds. Without releasing the power button, also hold down the home button for 10 seconds. Without releasing the home button, release the power button but keep holding the home button for 30 seconds.
9. If done correctly, your iPhone should reboot and the jailbreak process should start. This step may take up to 15-20 minutes so be patient.
10. Once this process is over, you will get a message saying that it is “done!”
11. Click the “finish” button and reboot your iPhone. The reboot may take up to 10 minutes so again, be patient.
12. Congratulations, you just jailbroke your iPhone 3.0 with RedSn0w. Cydia should now be on your springboard

One step to make it easier – if you have updated your iPhone with iTunes you can get the “right firmware” in the C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates. Just that you dont have to download it again!

Shouldn’t you take your sim card out before starting the process? If I remember correctly I fried two sims when I didn’t take them out. Stop me if I’m wrong.

@Simon – not sure you have to remove the SIM. I didn’t and didn’t have any problem.
@Phayzer – I don’t think the Dev Team is going to release QuickPwn. RedSn0w does the exact same job as QuickPwn so there is no reason for the Dev Team to create a duplicate tool. I might be wrong though.

Okay. I might be retarded. This is my first time jailbreaking a phone. Can’t even count it as a first time because it was unsuccessful. I have a few questions. I have the IPSW but I’d downloaded it somewhere. Due to the numerous amounts of pages I visited, I can’t recall the exact location. I’m pretty sure it’s the correct one because it takes me all the way to the reboot option. First question, in case it isn’t the correct one, WHERE CAN I GET THE RIGHT ONE FROM? Now for my second question, I have tried and tried again to correctly reboot it into jailbreaking mode, but was unsuccessful, now I may just be a retard, but this retard needs help. I’ll be on step three and holding down the home button. Am I supposed to hold it for 30 sec? Because it keeps changing to the reboot screen about 10 seconds in. I’m so lost. HELP ANYONE? Please.
Amazing how the “waiting to reboot” hang-up is skirted as a non issue huh Sebastien? Seems we’re not alone with this ise so if you don’t mind…. how bout addressing it and give us all the lowdown on how to fix this failure at the very END of the jailbreaking process using Redsn0w?
I am having a hang on 2nd reboot consistently. Unplugging the USB cable and replugging it does not fix the problem.
I’m using a new iPhone 3GS with 3.01 loaded on it and iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore as the IPSW

err scratch that no Cydia icon on my springboard..
Try Restarting ur iphone. if it doesnt show… download a free app from the iphone app world, then after that restart ur iphone, then cydia show appear on ur springboard
@Jeff – did you make sure you checked “install cydia”??? Also, apps are now installed on the second screen of the springboard (or third screen if the 2nd is full). Look there!
Same problem as Jeff, cant get the icon to show. I had a snafu at the Waiting for Reboot, and got past that with some help of messages (power+home, apple logo up, release power, hold home). This then showed that it was installing the ramdisk and kernel, and then redsn0w says its done. The phone goes to a black, but still on state, and I must restart to get it to a menu.
At this point, there is no Cydia on any page, and I KNOW that Cydia was checked on install (its checked by default). Also tried above to instal a free app, and reboot, also tried going to Settings > General > restrictions and turning it on and off.
I cant even tell if the jailbreak is done or not. Is there a way to tell in the Settings>About, or elsewhere? Maybe I can try SSH’ing into the phone with the ‘media’ user…
Any tips are welcome.
never mind on that SSHing…you can only do that once you install OpenSSH package from Cydia :-p
Also, I think you login as ‘mobile’ user or ‘root’, NOT media.

It told me to use a different tactic for the Waitinf for Reboot issue. It said to wuickly unplug and replug the usb cable. That worked and this time around a HDD icon on the full screen came up, and now a progress bar with the running pineapple (quickpwn) icon. Now its restarting with the apple logo.
AND CYDIA IS THERE. yay. I had to go into Cydia, wait, and then it went to lock screen and I went back in to Cydia and now its working! First thing cydia had me do was upgrade some packages, i did a full upgrade. They were all good core packages like OpenSSL, disk device commands, etc
Hope I helped someone else! This 3.0 jailbreaking is too young man.

I was having the same issue as you were. For some reason Redsn0w was not prompting the device to reboot. Here is what I did.
While redsn0w was at waiting for reboot I held the power and home buttons down while connected until I saw the apple logo. I then released the power button. The process then continued!

Waiting for Reboot fixed!
Holy he\\ man, I spent 2 nights and endless hours away from my wife trying to figure this out. I thought it was because I was attempting it with 3.0.1, then I tried going back a version, then I tried installing the various old IOUSB drivers (dev-team site has section about DFU mode not working under certain drivers). I also stepped through 3-4 tutorials, tried it with redsn0w and with quickpwn!? How is this not a note on ANY of the freakin upgrade or jailbreak tutorials?! There seriously needs to be a documentation and instruction person over at dev-team to coordinate how and when instructions are given out. Either that, or tutorials makes should be updating their tutorials. I think I will try to email this guy about his.
If anyone else has this issue, add it to here, no login needed. The more people with the issue, the quicker it is resolved and mentioned.

Are you sure you are holding the correct buttons? and the correct amount of time? cause i just did mine and really there is nothing you can do wrong other than selecting the wrong FW so….

Didn’t work for me either. Everything went through….but don’t see Cydia. and yes i check the other pages and it wasn’t there. i guess i’ll just have to wait for another method to be released.
Keep trying… i tried twice and i was using the wrong restore file. Try using the same one you installed the restore file from Apple.
For VISTA:
C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
There you will find the recently downloaded IPSW
iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw
Then run RedSn0w. and it should work.

I’ve downloaded redsn0w, and the 3.0 version of firmware (because i cannot find it in my own pc, i have updated my iphone with all the new software a few months ago)
then when i open the redsn0w program and “browse” my folder for the firmware, i open the folder and in all the sub-folders they are blank, like there are no files that come under (*.IPSW)…………………….where am i going wrong???
Download the files using Firefox and not Safari. Safari unzips and renders the IPSW useless. But that’s the easy part. Wait until you get the “waiting to reboot” hang-up…… then yer cooked!
I am using explorer. Do I need to use something else? I am also having problems with no files under the folder under .IPSW.

Here is a problem I ran into but resolved after reading.
READ THIS IF YOU KEEP SEEING WAITING FOR REBOOT AFTER SECOND STAGE
I was pulling my ispw off an external hard drive because that it where i keep all of my files.
Try having the correct ispw file, like the post at 5:21 says and make sure it is on same hard drive as where your windows install files are and redsn0w together.
Run redsn0w after doing this and it worked.
Also, at first when I got held up at waiting for reboot, it would only give me the option to “Install Cydia”. After my process,I then saw the “Install Cydia” and “Unlock iPhone” option.
Get your bootloaders in there and you are done.
This was done on an iPhone 2G 8G running iPhone OS 3.0 …build 7A341.
sweet worked like a charm on vista and iphone 3g didn’t delete anything either, it just added cydia

Make sure you EXTRACT redsn0w to desktop
then follow Eleven8′s advice
but the AppData file is hidden, so when it comes time to find it, enter it in the address bar instead of clicking on a folder, it’ll take you right in.

I have a iPhone 3g OS 3.0 and jailbroke it using redsn0w. I am having alot of problems with fontswap and winterboard. Winterboard is not applying my selected themes, it looks like it’s not respringing properly. With fontswap it’s not activating the font I’m choosing. Is there a fix for this?

Damn, I thought this was gonna work man. I finally got past the Waiting for Reboot and I cant get the jailbreak to show. Restrictions on / off didnt work for me.
Tried 3x times on Vista but it wouldn’t reboot. Worked first time on XP.
Started the process to use redsn0w on my iPhone 2G, I unlocked it over a year ago with a software unlock. Funny thing is I updated to latest version of iTunes and then updated my iphone to 3.0 and evetything seems to be working fine, no jailbreaking, just seems to be working, the only thing noticeable is that youtube doesn’t seem to be working.

Yes I found alot of problems with winterboard and fontswap applications and utube. I think this is occuring with alot of people. I read a blog that said with thus jailbreak not all cydia applications are working well.

Listen, all those having trouble with redsn0w freezing and the iphone freezing at points in the upgrade, sure i did the winxp capability mode and run as administer, but that didnt do it for me. For me, Redsnow would not work in my Vista 64bit. I tried it in another vista 32bit computer and worked perfectly. I think it really doesnt like the 64bit vista…
Hi, I’m unlocking and jailbreaking my iPhone 2G on vista. When i use redsnow it gets to the end and says done but on my iphone there is just the icon saying downlading jailbreak data :S What should I do? I don’t think all the bootloaders, restore file and the redsn0w files are in same folder. Is that the problem?

I tried several times on my Vista 32 Bit and it did not work. I moved to a Winodws XP laptop and it worked the 1st time.
k. works like a charm. took only 4-5mins to complete installation. Only thing i having a problem is the apps inside the cydia. I’ve tried to dowload some of the apps example “MiVTones” but it’s saying that, under NOTE: “The requested modifications cannot be applied due to required dependencies or conflicts that cannot be automatically found or fixed.” MODIFICATIONS: ” Install – MIVTones,Mobile Substrate …. Easy to JB! Buut i’m also having some troubles with some apps in Cydia. Can download and install the “iPhone video recorder”, but it crashes when I try to open it :S. Anyone having the same trouble?
Good program. Worked for me on first try. Just make sure your ready when the countdown starts.
I was able to get it to work on Windows 7 x64. I right clicked the redsn0w.exe and went to properties, compatibility tab. Set it to run in Windows XP Sp3 mode and checked the box to run as administrator. Then I right clicked the redsn0w.exe file and selected run as administrator and then followed the instructions. It was done in about 5 minutes.
hey quick question? i just recently downloaded redsnow for my iphone 3g using the 3.0 firmware, i installed cydia n icy,, so finally my phone is jailbroken but everytime i open cydia it tells me to “upgrade essential?” so i follow through n upgrade but there’s n error before the download is done… it wont let me upgrade.. anyone know why?

I need some help I guess. I have done many JBs with my iPhone 2g. However every time I try to enter DFU mode it tells me that no device is detected and that I misunderstood something. I am doing everything correctly as far as I can tell. Am I missing something??
also sometimes i get recovery mode instead of DFU mode. I am really lost here as I keep following instructions to a tee (I have also tried other methods demonstrated in videos and stuff…)

i may have found a solution for those who are stuck at the “waiting for reboot” screen. i believe that updating through itunes is a different file from what other websites are distributing. in that case, if you’ve had the “waiting for reboot” problem as i did and none of the suggestions worked, i.e., plugging into a different usb or DFU mode before starting redsn0w, start over.
1. – start redsn0w (DFU mode before or after. doesnt matter).
2 – locate the .ispw file itunes updated your iphone with. (located C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates).
3. – follow the rest of the steps.
theory is that the files other websites are using vs. the itunes update are different thus redsn0w does not recognize the .ispw.
Ummm, i successfully jailbroke my iphone 3g in under 5 minutes and then tried to install SBSettings using cydia.. this requires a respring, but it has been just a black screen on my phone for over 20minutes. Anyone have any reasons why this is happening or how i can fix it????
im using redsn0w with a iphone 2g. when i run redsn0w i cant find the .ipsw file. the firmware file i downloaded does not have anything redsnow will accept and i couldnt find it where i was supposed to it in the itunes file. noting that i couldnt not register the phone after i upgraded it to 3.0 cuz i didnt have a proper sim. help !

Installed, got it working completely fine, but if I try to open any downloaded app, it opens for 1-2 seconds then crashes. I tried downloading an app off the app store that was “3.0 Tested” but the same thing happens.

I have downloaded the firmware from several different sources and each one simply gives me a folder called ‘iPhone1,2_3′ with several .dmg files (all password protected) and other stuff. None of the files are .ipsw files. Can anyone help with this problem?
In a previous jailbreak wasn’t there an app for the Mac that took the firmware from the iPhone instead of needing to download it from a web site?
Never mind. I see the problem now. I downloaded the firmware with Safari 4. Once I downloaded it with Firefox, it worked perfectly.
I’m stuck at the 2nd waiting for reboot as well. I tried the ipsw from itunes/software updates folder, but got the same result.
I’ve done this no less than 8 times now and everytime it hangs at 2nd waiting for reboot with a black screen iphone.

Followed the steps to a point, got in done first try in less than 10 minutes. I installed cydia and icy, which caused both programs to not work, so I re did the jailbreak with just cydia checked and not icy, and then when I turned on the phone, both programs were there and they worked SUPER! I have successfully unlocked one iphone 2g 3.0 but am having problems with the 3g. It keeps saying “Waiting for reboot.” I have left it for 30mins and nothing happens. I have been trying this since morning without any success. Help please. I have tried all the tips that people have everywhere online and they dont help.

Can’t get it to work, and I’ve tried on 2 laptops and 1 desktop – all Win XP 32bit. Goes through all processes fine, and then reboots after the jailbreak to the “iTunes” logo. The only way to get it to boot again is to restore it with iTunes again – to an unjailbroken state.
Anyone else meet this problem?

I found that if you hold the power button and home button wait until the apple logo comes up let go of the power button and it will finish the installation and the waiting to reboot comes up again.

Got it working, WOOHOO! Had to build a virtual Mac OSX system though – Windows Jailbreaking may need a small bit of tweaking.
Though the Dev Team are so good, I’m sure they’re working on it as we speak!

hey i tried to jailbreak my iphone 3G i updated to 3.0 in itunes and i had a t-mobile sim in and when it was done it went right to plug into itunes. so i decided to try and jailbreak it wih redsn0w and it worked fine but when it turned on it went right back tio the plug into itunes picture and so when i plugged it into itunes it said that the sim was not compadible so it would not show up on itunes so i dont know what to do now??
No question – it did NOT run on my vista but ran fine on my xp computer. Find an xp comp and follow instructions and you should be perfectly fine.
yeah i have an xp . but ok thanx ill just try again. so should i keep my sim card in and is it going to come up with the plug in to itunes thing again?

ya so i have a problem. it finally worked and i jailbroke it but my wifi wasnt working before so i figured if i restored it it would work now but it doesnt so there is there any way i can still get on cydia and add ultra sn0w?

Heres the prob. Its stuck on Itunes screen.
Rebooting it, it comes back to iTunes screen. Its not auto turning off or anything, its a constant.
I googled the Restore error 1602 and the fix by Apple, assumes that a reboot clears it.
Thoughts? please?
*Addendum* – At this point, Itunes doesn’t recognize it. It is latest version of Itunes.
Well, installed Itunes on a laptop and forced a restore. Certainly doing more than what it was, but for now it seems to be correcting the issue. I’ll let any interested parties know the results.

I was having problems with RedSn0w crashing after putting the phone into restore mode. I finally tried it with install icy unchecked and it worked. Vista 32bit Iphone 2g. My 3g phone worked perfect.
i did it i was sucssesful and it took only 10min awsome bro thanku.
Done in < 5 min! Using Win XP Pro SP2, iPhone 3g w/ OS 3.0.

maybe it works better with 3G, and maybe it works with 2G on XP.
with all my respect to the DEV team, this time, they screwed, big time.
if it works some of the time, on some of the iPhones, it doesn’t register as being a valuable app.

the clean .ipsw fetched directly from iTunes download folder.
after several attempts, redsn0w got tired apparently, and displayed a message that the thing was jailbroken successfully, and the Finish button, but it was all crap. I knew it can’t be a real jailbreak, when I got the msg in less than 10 seconds..
I’ll give it another try tomorrow, from my PC running XP at work.
it might have a lot to do with your platform.. and the iPhone generation you have.
it’s quite obvious it’s having a lot of incompatibilities with 2G, and it’s failing big time with those series. working better with 3G iPhones.

tried the ipsw file of iClarified, and the original one from apple. both did not help.
I ran compatibility mode on .exe
I even put all files in one folder, which is ridiculous, and has nothing to do with have it working or not, but just for the fun of it.
changed the USB location.
used different combinations of keys to get to DFU mode (there is more than one method), trying to trick the app. or anything, also didn’t help.

For the people that are stuck at the “Waiting for Reboot,” try disconnecting and reconnecting your iDevice during this process. Redsn0w should keep churning at your phone. hope this helps

If your downloading the firmware from this website you get an .zip rename it to .ipsw that works for me. and it’s so far as i reading, not been wroted.
It looks like i’m the only one who is running into the problem i’m having. Ok here goes: I had my iphone 3G jailbroken, then updated to OS 3.0. Everything went ok with the upgrade. I want to jailbreak my phone again so I followed the steps to download redsn0w. I have tried several times to download it and everytime it downloads as “word” I thought it was a “zip” file??? For those of you guys who are stuck at the “Waiting for Reboot,” if you’re running windows Vista, then it’s probably not going to work, especially with 1st Gen and 2G iPhones.
what you should do, is connecting your iDevice to windows XP or another version of windows, with iTunes 8.2 and latest version of Redsn0w (0.72 at the time of writing this post). follow the same process of jailbreaking and unlocking, and everything should go smooth.
after jailbreaking and unlocking, revert to your Windows vista, and do the backup if you want to restore your old contacts numbers, music files.. videos, apps etc..
Again, Vista seems to have some sort of incompatibilities with redsn0w.
it’s not the ipsw file, and it’s not about putting all files in the same folder, you know it’s a lame thing to think of.
it runs like a charm on windows XP and windows 7

C’mon!! What I did wrong this time!!! When my iphone was jailbreak…I put it to sync with itunes 8.02 and both crashed… The sync was about 45 min. I had to stoped the itunes and when I saw my iphone..It stucked too.

I have jailbroken my phone using redsn0w with the new firmware (3.0) BUT most of my apps wont sync to my phone anymore (The apps where downloaded from appulo & some from itunes store)! Only 2 did and i have around 80 apps. Im at a loss as to why this happened. Can any one shed some light on this for me please??

Did you make sure that Redsn0w and the ipsw (Firmware) file are in the exact same folder? You are having the exact same issue that I was having, but copying the ipsw to the same folder fixed it for me.
For some reason the “Browse” and selecting it from a different folder doesn’t help – I have jailbroken 4 3G’s since, and all worked great
Like other people I have the same problem with “Waiting for reboot” . iPhone 3g, Windows XP, tried several times and get stuck at the same point…..”Waiting for reboot” and nothing happens….appreciate help on this…..

what fixed the problem was this.
I was on 3.0 firmware, i downloaded 3.0 from a torrent seed. I was stuck on that screen. I figured to get the one from iTunes. I downloaded the firmware, follow the redsn0w instruction and works like a charm baby! yeah!
i ran this on a windows vista prem 32 bit. I had set the compatibility to run on windows xp and set admin rights to the program.
I followed the same proceedure on another unit I have for my brother-in-law, worked the first time around. I guess the freakin firmware i downloaded was the culprit of this dreaded “waiting for boot” issues. That got me workin baby!

my phone had been seriously fucked up from the sega genesis mock game i downloaded in cydia. it wasn’t reading in itunes and it only had the loading circle and the apple logo on the screen.
if anyone experiences this terrifying problem again and thinks you’re going to lose your phone… don’t panic. do the whole redsn0w process, then in the middle, when your phone reboots the second time in DFU mode… before the phone starts to run the jailbreak, hit cancel so that your screen is just black. unplug your USB cable, and replug it so that your phone is detected in itunes then do a regular restore and your phone will be back to normal.

STUCK On WAITING TO REBOOT FIX… spent 2 hours and finally someone said check the firmware and provided a path to find it.. i realized I was using the wrong firmware!!!! as soon as I selected the corect firmware I got a check mark to unlock phone which I haven’t seen before…

hi, i believe i mess up very bad. I installed an app from cydia and it just realease today, it’s about mms, i dont remeber the name i think it was “ActivateMMS2G” and now it doesn’t boot up at all. The only thing i see in the screen is the apple logo. and after 5 mins u see that is trying to load something but then screen goes black as if you restarting the iphone again and logo comes out again, it keeps doing this over and over, so now i dont know what to do… any suggestions..

i insttaled the Makeitmine from CYDIA and remove it to see how is everything will work…

they restored the new 3os from there imack and my phone came alive again.
i came home and i installed back the redsn0w again but with onlu the CYDIA checked,
i did not install ICY. Do not install it with the CYDIA
never install the ICY with CYDIA
just indtall one of them
and my iphone is working more than perfect with the ultrasn0w unlock program
i have an alive iphone now.thanks for the people whom made this redsn0w and that ultrasn0w.

Nothing more in the 3G 16gig than the gig just the size of storage, nothing techs.
From what I know now, I think it will work at any where with any sim card. Just leave the sim in there and jailbreak using the redsn0w and leave your iPhone connected to the pc until it done and you see the homepage with no sim or no service on the upper left hand side.
Do not ever. Or never install CYDIA with ICY. Install only CYDIA.
From CYDIA go to sources and add that source for ultrasn0w and then install it from CYDIA same as I did. Restart your iPhone. It will start and search for service. It will see your sim and get working the way which will make you happy. By the way I am using my iPhone to reply to you and post this now.

The first time ran into a problem after entering DFU at stage ‘Updating RAM (Downloading JailBreak Data)’ . A Windows message – ‘redsn0w has stopped working’ appeared. I had to close the program.
Read from an earlier post to right click on redSn0w, and choose options
1) Run as administrator or Properties > Compatibility tab > Privilige > Run as Administrator
2) Properties > Compatibility tab > Run this program in compatibility mode -> Select WinXP Service Pack 2
Reran redSn0w the next time and I have an unlocked phone! Thanks a lot guys!

I also got stuck on “waiting for reboot” for a couple of hours until I compared the firmware file downloaded automatically by iTunes and the one downloaded directly by me from some website.
The first had 229 MB (240,394,111 bytes), the second had 230 MB (241,229,233 bytes). I haven’t noticed the small difference in their names: iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw vs iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw
So the mistake was that I updated my iphone with the first one but in redsn0w I was loading the second one. Curiously, redsn0w accepted the wrong file and said … “successful” … then it got stuck on reboot.

@Sebastien: I was under the impression that if you have a jailbroken phone and then update it with iTunes, then you would ruin your iPhone. Am I wrong? My phone is cuurently jailbroken and has 2.2 software. Would updating from iTunes to 3.0 sofware kill my already jailbroken iPhone?
@Lamin yes, if you update the firmware, then it will remove the jailbreak. But you can update the firmware, THEN jailbreak it again.

I had the same problem with the phone hanging at the first reboot. I finally tried it on my old ppc ibook and it worked. For some reason it didn’t work on my intel imac. Guess the answer is to just try another computer.
For all who gets the Waiting to boot messages should check the if they are jail breaking with the correct OS .

I tried the default download redsn0w .8 ten times on my 3G and would always hang at “waiting for reboot”.
Then I noticed this site said .8 was for 3GS so I tried .72 and it worked right away!

I was having the issue where it was hung on ‘waiting for reboot’ Finally I got frustrated and pressed the power button, which immedately installed the software and took about 2 minutes to complete the rest. If you are stuck at ‘waiting for reboot’ just keep the phone plugged in and press and hold the power button for 1 – 2 seconds. Worked for me

Im experiencing a similar problem, that when i atempt to unlock and jailbreak my original first gen iphone it gets stuck in “waiting for reboot”
i have the correct firmware, and correct boot loader files, and dont have any problem getting it into DFU mode.
my iphone already has 3.0 on it, but doesnt have an active sim card, as i just bought the new iphone 3GS a few days ago.
the original iphone now doesnt have anything, its stuck on the screens that say plug phone into itunes, or make an emergency call. similar to when i first bought it and it wasnt activated yet.
it got stuck like that after i tried unlocking it with the pwnage tool, and not itunes doesnt even detect it, but somehow iphoto does.
does anyone have any ideas?
alright, so now i tried holding the home and power buttons, and i got past “wating for reboot”
went through to the final steps and got to the finish button, clicked it, and it rebooted.
but when it rebooted, all it says is to plug into itunes, and still has the emergenty call pad, and there is a lock in the top center of the screen between the power bar, and the service bars, no sim card is installed though.
also, itunes isnt detecting it

- no sending MMS function
- do not support bluetooth for stereo music
- no internet share function (use my iphone as modemn)

the iphone thru itunes (2.2.1 to 3.0) the way u can get this
is following this if you have updated your iPhone with iTunes you can get the “right firmware” in the C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates. Just that you dont have to download it again!

- no icon of sending MMS
- don’t support stereo bluetooth
- no internet share function

I cannot find a tutorial that tells you what to do after ur iphone is jailbroken to sync cracked apps.. I remember last time I needed to install something from cydia and download some free apps?? Can someone tell me plzzz! Thanx!!

My 2nd gen 3.0 is stuck at “Waiting for reboot”….please help. I copied my Firmware file to my desktop from where ITunes put it. I’m running the redsn0w 0.72
I tried holding the pwer button agfain for a few seconds and nothing happened.
OK……….
I unplugged it and then plugged it back in while holding Power and Home. It started….it got to about 3 bars of the RAM part and Windows Error popped up stating that Redsn0w.exe stopped working.
OK…..GOT IT!!
I got everything back to normal. I verified that my Ipod still worked, shut down Redsn0w and then went throught the whole proccess again, this time it work immediatly the screen flashed white a couple of times and you could see Redsn0w continue to do it’s thing……
Works great done in 5 mins AND I didn’t realise that you got to keep all of your cracked apps that you download from apullous

A warning for you guys DO NOT download Icy within redsn0w when you jailbreak your iPhone or else your cydia will get an error message everytime you try to download anything and at the homepage it says:
Your copy of Cydia does not know
what version it is, itself running.

I got the same problem as some people got iphone stuck at reboot, when jailbraking with redsnow. I think it is the problem with USB ports. I have old laptop with USB 1.0 when i am trying on my laptop i got the problem of hanging at reboot. When i start doing at again on USB2.0 laptop it went though. If anyone getting this problem please try on USB 2.0 ports.

I tried to jailbreak and it seemed to work except that I now have no service and can’t seem to get it to detect my network provider, O2 Ireland.
I have tried restoring but still no service.

it works but the instruction is so poor that it is easier to escape from the land of the lost than bringing your iphone back to life.
here’s what i did:
1. folowed all instructions up to the point where you need to boot the iphone in install mode
2. unfortunately, redsnow didnt say “when you press next a timer will start to guide you so hold th phone now”, i lost timing, but i still had it working…
3. blah blah blah long story cut short, it says “done”, i click the button, and my phone is tuck on ““Downloading Jailbreak Data”)”, hell i cant even turn the phone off.
4. i unplug it, and after minutes of just looking into it it turn off.
5. i put it back on and its in restore mode
6. i restore pressing shift restore on itunes using the firmware
7. when it reboot sit locked.
so i redo the redanow installation, sign of hopeless actually
1. redo everything, this time i know that there is a time guide on rebooting in install mode
2. but wait something seems wrong, so i unplug the iphone, and click next again, at redsnow continue
3. its so fast like just 3-5mins and “DONE”, that damn button again, but this time, i didnt click it. im afraid that clicking it will hung me up on ““Downloading Jailbreak Data” again… after like a minute, i saw the pineappleman on my iphone.
4. it seems like, you dont need to perss “DONE” as soon as it says its done, leave it a couple of minutes before the iphone respond
now it workks for me
I’m not clear–what is the iPhone supposed to look like while it’s in DFU mode? The info I found elsewhere said that the iPhone should be black screen in DFU mode, but several people have mentioned a pineapple.
With the iPhone having a black screen, and RedSn0w “waiting for reboot,” how do I know if anything is actually happening? There’s no progress on the RedSn0w progress bar.
Should I restart the process? How do I do that, just turn the phone back on by holding the power button?

Tried on Vista Ultimate SP1 12 times and got stuck on 1st Waiting for Reboot every single time. Tried it on an XP laptop and it worked perfectly first time.

OMG, how hard does this need to be. i’ve got a 3GS running purplerain, worked like a charm coz i could never find the ipsw file before.
upgraded to 3.01 and not phone locked again, d/l redsn0w, followed the instructions, found the ipsw file and now “unable to to recognize specified ipsw file”
what the feck is the deal with this, i’ve tried d/l the firmware file iPhone2,1_3.0.1_7A400_Restore but there is no ipsw file in the extraction? what the hell am i doing wrong?
you want to download the 3.0 restore not the 3.0.1 even if that is the firmware you have on your phone. I was soo stuck on that, but then I DL the 3.0 firmware and it said IPSW recognized and proceeded, now I am on Waiting to Reboot, hopefully it works!!!

I was getting through the first and second stages, but then hanging on “waiting for reboot”. I unplugged the usb cable from the iphone for a second, then plugged it back in. screen went white for two seconds, then redsn0w continued. seems to work. good luck.

After many tries on my Windows machine and my mac mini I got it to jailbreak and install Cydia. Seems Redsn0w crashes on my machine with Icy option checked.

Here’s what I did:
-Changed Redsn0w compatibilty to Vista SP2 and Run as Admin
-Followed instructions exactly
-If “Install ICY” option shows, uncheck
-Hold power for 3 secs
-Hold Power and Home button 10 sec
-Release Power/ continue to hold Home for 30 secs – (should only take about 5 secs before entering DFU and Firmaware install – I kept holding it another 10 secs for good measure)
-Couple of white flashes- Reboot happened almost immediately.
-The familiar color Pineapple Beach scene while files are downloaded and installed
-Then final reboot
-My familiar background shows up and I know I’m in business.
-Search for AT&T – found and done.
-Cydia on 2nd page
I’m having issues with the jailbreak. I’ve been using a 16GB 3G (one of the ones that came out at launch for the 3G) and am using WinV64. I have the IPSW and everything is right to my knowledge. Everything extracted, running as admin in compatibility mode. Sometimes I get stuck on the “Waiting for Reboot” and sometimes I don’t. Even when I get the waiting to Reboot screen, a simple unplug + plug back in does NOT work. Nothing shows up on the screen (essentially just black). For the few times it has “worked,” the screen goes black, but the backlight is on (so it’s a weird off-black color — almost a dark shade of purple from some angles). I give it time (still leaving it connected to the computer, not closing out redsn0w, even though it’s “finished”) for the backlight to go off. It eventually does, but no matter what, I can’t get Cydia to show anywhere. I chose to ONLY install Cydia. I’ve tried this process before to ONLY install Icy too, but neither honestly work.
I jailbroke back on firmware 2.2.1 with Quickpwn, and that went forward relatively easy on the first try. This isn’t working at all…

I figured out the issues, which everyone should take note of on the iPhone 3.0.1 flash.
Here are some additional steps to take to “fix” it.
Make sure that you have an ****OLDER**** copy of iTunes (***8.2*** — don’t get 8.2.1.6). You can google for an older version to find it.
Also, make sure that your firmware is CORRECT. For some reason, some dummy out there posted a firmware for the 3G 3.0, but in reality it was the 3GS. It’s the top result on google — so watch out. 2G = 1,1; 3G = 1,2; 3GS = 2,1
Once I had an older version of iTunes (8.2.0) and the correct firmware for 3.0, everything went EXACTLY as it should have. No need to even “unplug” and “replugin” your phone.

for peeps having the redsn0w program stop working during the jb (windows has to close it etc) on vista, i right clicked redsn0w and set it to run as administrator AND compatibility to win95.
then when ur doing the jailbreak, i kept the home button held ALL THE WAY through til the phone rebooted and had the pineapple logo come up.
it says 30 secs but as soon as i let go the program crashed…..
anyhow, thats how mine ended up working successfully.

#1 make sure you have the correct firmware
#2 Make sure if you downloaded redsn0w from a torrent, that when it gets stuck on the jailbreaking stage, you UNPLUG the device, and plug it back in shortly after. (like 3 secs) this should reset it and it will continue with the boot.
#3 if you cant find cydia then follow what Greg suggested:
“If your Cydia icon is not showing up, go to general, settings. Enable restrictions, then disable them. This should bring up cydia.”
#4 dont get frusterated. I have only had time to try this on Mac OSX. For you windows users out there, i would say the sedsn0w app is probably about the same. just try all the suggestions. couldnt hurt.

Alright, I can’t even get started on this process, because when i go to “Browse” for the firmware after i have unzipped Redsn0w, it doesn’t show up!
I don’t understand why it is not working for me now. I had used this process previously before i had to restore my phone earlier today.
make sure you choose 3.0 firmware not the 3.0.1 firmware that is on your phone. the program won’t recognize the 3.0.1 firmware for some reason. i was stuck on this for soo long, so be aware of which IPSW you are choosing
its simple. if you get stuck in “waiting for reboot” unplug your USB cable and plug it back in again. it will jumpstart it.
Okay, well i figured, that i should probably change the extension from .ipsw.zip to just .ipsw
Which allowed Redsn0w to recognize that I had the software update. But when i select it and it tried to identify that its the right software, it says its unable to. Im just simply at a loss here.
@ Alexx, crazy as it sounds, you need to download the firmware (software update) with Mozilla FireFox! Once you begin the download you’ll see the file extension is .ipsw and not associated with WinZip, WinRAR or one of those other compression utilities. Hope this helps!

just follow the directions above….restore your iphone with the 3.0.1 firmware (go into Itunes, plug in your phone and click Option Restore, so you can choose the 3.0.1 firmware or you can just click the Update button and it will restore it to 3.0.1 which is the latest firmware, find the link above in the article to download. Also download the 3.0 firmware which you will select once you open redsnOw. then just follow the directions above.

Depending on what version of redsn0w you may be using, that could be the problem right there. I originally successfully jailbroke my iPod Touch 1G with redsn0w 0.7.2. Once 0.8 came out I thought I would try again with that just to rule out any instabilities. Well the true instability was in software version 0.8. All I did to fix this was download 0.7.2 again and rejailbroke using that, and it worked exactly the same as the first time.

If it freezes during reboot you need to either quickly unplug and plug in usb( didn’t work for me) or hold down the home and power buttons until you see redsnow respond.(worked) …..
Agh, it must just be the computer im using.
I jailbroke my phone on my dad’s computer and it worked just fine, but i had to restore my phone earlier today, and now my dads computer is not a my disposal. So im stuck using the one im on right now.
My phone never reboots during the process, yet it always seems to get passed the “waiting for reboot” and goes on to be stuck at “Uploading Second Step” or something like that.
Still, it never turns on.
I’m having so many issues, im thinking about making that trip back down to visit my dad just to use his computer!

Alright this is probably where your problem starts; see redsn0w hasn’t even hit 1.0 yet, it is still currently in 0.8. What you need to do Alex, is to download 0.7.2 on Mac, and 0.7.1 on Windows.
I have had the same problem you are having with my iPhone 3G, my 1G iPod Touch, and my friends iPhone 3G, all of it was solved by downgrading my version of redsn0w. So do you follow me now when I say that you most likely are having problems with the current version of redsn0w?

Hi all, I’ve recently got my phone unlocked by ringing up vodafone and paying $50.00 to unlock to any networks they gave me instructions on how to do this and the instructions were to go into intunes and restore and backup now once doing this i had previously jailbreak my fone before now i’ve lost my jailbroke and am afraid if i do the update and restore again via redsn0w will i lose my unlock network feature??!!? as in unlocked to any sim network to which it is working fine i just want cydia back and my apps but am afraid i will lose my network features ?? any ideas?? am running 2.2.1

Okay, had the ‘waiting for reboot’ thing for 2 days now.
I followed OK-Done’s instructions for Win7 RTM 32bit, but I was still getting the same wait. I discovered that I had my cable plugged into a USB hub, it doesn’t seem to like that. I plugged it directly to the computer, and it worked first try. Before I changed the plug, I kept getting ‘Windows does not recognize this USB device’ pop-ups. I was in the middle of a ‘wait’ dialog when I unplugged the USB cable, and once I plugged it in to the computer, it started loading perfectly.
So here is everything EXACTLY as installed.
Windows 7 RTM 32bit
iPod touch 3.0 (A341)
redsn0w 0.8 with Vista SP2 compatibility mode and run as administrator.
USB plugged directly to computer, not hub
redsn0w and the ipod firmware were both on the desktop
“Install ICY” unchecked
3 second power
10 second power and home
The third step says 30 seconds, but the countdown disappeared at 20 seconds.

Hi ive tried to jailbreak namy times now and still no luck im doing everything fine with all the firmware n what not but when it comes to reboot, it goes to the second stage and then on my computer, this can be performed faster with USB 2.0 so is my USB to crap for the jailbreak, and it regonises its in recoervy mode, it says take out apple device and pulg back in selecting the usb port but it doesnt let me choose a bloody usb port, help would be greatly apprieciated, thank you very muc

For everyone that is having problems…. make sure you haave the correct 3.0 software for your phone. The ipsw files that are most prominent seem to be 3GS files. Which is what my problem was. I have attached the direct download to apple for the correct downloads.

Hold down power button 2-3 secs, dont let go of power hold down home until it tells you to only release the power button then keep holding home for 30sec should work fine.

Hello, I am new to this site. I am totally aware that this is a topic about Ipod Touch BUT I have the same problem with my Iphone 3g. I just used purple rain “to make rain” and after that it showed me that I have to restore. I didn’t know that purple rain is only for 3GS. Anyway, after that, I used redsnow( 0.7.1,0.7.2,0.8 – u name it) and the 3.0 firmware file to jailbreak it because it was stuck at insert SIM+ connect to Itunes. Although everything goes well, redsnow says – DONE! – bla bla bla – I get the same STUCK SCREEN “Downloading Jailbreak Data” and the spinning wheel – I tried a million times – all the versions on different PC’s, OS’s – u name it. NO chance at waiting, or restarting, reconnecting cable.
Any further advice?

bastic 003 considering no 1 else helped me i have worked out why people on 3.1 cant jailbreak there iphone 3g. the reason is the jailbreak software cant jailbreak version 3.1 firmware so you have to wait untill they come out with a software to complete this operation.

Everything seemed Ok,….. it’s “downloading Jailbreak data” (but for HOW LONG). I’ve done this twice now and still same problem. I’ve waited 45 minutes and it just spins there, when I try to reboot it goes back to it’s “locked position” (without even the “emergency call option”). What is the problem?
Nice tutorial, at first I forgot to install the firmware via iTunes before, so I was getting frustrated lol. Then I did that, and it installed perfectly. Now, I finally have an untethered jailbreak

I am using my IPhone 3G in Egypt. The carrier is etisalat. It worked in less than three minutes. But, My IPhone does not see the 3G. It sees only E. Also, there is an error about one kilometer in the GPS applications. Anything to do to recover that. Anyway, thank you for resurrecting my IPhone.

downloaded it but cydia icon was not there
you wont see cydia at first, you will see an icon of blackra1n click it and you will see cydia, rock and blacksn0w thats how you will install cydia and unlock your iphone
That worked like a charm! Though my phone rebooted automatically when i am trying to install any packages in Cydia (could be an issue with the package itself)

Noobie needs help here… The computer where I had my iPhone backup crashed. Now, I want to upgrade my iphone 3g from FW2.1 to FW3.0. Is there a way for me to keep my data especially my applications?
Help!!! I have the original 8GB 2G 1.1 or 1.2 firmware?? ( i upgraded the firmware once from the time i bought it) jailbroken and unlocked using a T-mobile sim. Today, I attempted to install the iphone 3.0 firmware. I installed the latest itunes software which was 9.0, however, I did not install the latest firmware on my iphone with my MAC (#1 of instructions: Before doing anything, make sure you have the latest version of iTunes and the latest firmware 3.0 installed on your iPhone.) The reason being was that the latest available update from Apple is now 3.1 and from what I was reading, the Redsn0w will not work for this yet…and I didn’t know how to download the old 3.0 to my phone. Anyway, aside from this I followed all the directions using Redsn0w .72 and I kept getting the itunes and USB icon on the iphone now. I tried this several times and even tried the Redsn0w .8 software. Someone, please help!!!

I ended up using PwnageTool 3.1.4 and that worked! Hopefully you have a Mac cause i don’t think they have this for Windows yet.

I downloaded redsnow and Firmware Ipod2 3.1.2 for my Ipod touch. I renamed the zip file to .IPSW but when I hit browse and chose it, all it says is “Unable to recognize specified IPSW.” Is there something I am missing to complete this? Since I have previoulsy used ITunes 9.0.2 to sync my Ipod Nano would this cause an issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So, I never used the Redsnow or whatever, but somehow I clicked on the directions for this Blackra1n one. I had ABSOLUTELY no idea what I was doing! I’m in Germany and my husband is in Afghanistan and we need to be able (esp.him to use the Afghanistan SIM’s) in order to even talk to each other for the next year – or to his four kids mind you.
So, having no idea what I was doing I followed the steps, but long story short ended up with the image some others have had where it wants you to plug your USB into iTunes. The USB device is not found, you can’t reinstall the driver, reinstalling iTunes doesn’t work, and apparently reading every forum in the world doesn’t work. There aren’t Apple stores here and they won’t call Germany. Besides, I still want it unlocked (btw, just learned that jailbreak was a frequent term around here, lol)
SOm should I go back and try the Blackra1n again? Or am I just screwed?

Ok, I personally didn’t solve this but a couple of people have already said this, and they are right. Put the firmware in the same file as redsnow. It worked beautifully after days of headaches from this crap. Need help? feel free to email me, lex_nyy @hotmail. com
i don’t have cydia in my springboard.. it was a brand new iPhone.. no cydia in second page, nor third page.. not even in the home page.. what’s wrong? i ticked the “install cydia” and “install icy” box but not even a single thing happened.. no icy nor cydia appeared in my springboard.. can anyone help me?

For those people that are having problems with their Wi-Fi and Youtube
there is a simple solution..
To fix Wi-Fi all you have to go is go 2 General Settings/Reset/Reset Network Settings
and poof it’s all fixed for you’re youtube
Open Cydia and add source http://www.cydia/iphoneil.net
and download Push Fix
After it reboots you’re youtube will be working

and keep having the same problem.. It downloads, then starts to reboot…

yo ok i just tryed to run redsn0w i just did everything it told me to do then it said my divice would do the rest no iv been waiting all day it installed it but its stuck at an apple icon
hey hey… I know I shouldnt be suggesting this at all.. But I got right up to the point where jailbreakin files were installing and I accidentally pulled the iphone off the pc cable.. but it continued to install… and cydia showed up etc. it all looks fine … =/ ill be back if it blows up
is anyone having a problem with redsn0w not recognizing the ipsw file, even if it’s in the same directory as the exe for redsn0w? i’m running vista, moved the file from the apple computers/itunes/iphone software folder, and still cannot get it to go. redsnow refuses to recognize the file.

im in the process of jailbreaking my ipod touch 2g. i followed the instructions and now the screen of redsn0w is the same as when its telling you the times but all the writing is faded

This is how it worked for me to fix the whole “Wait for Reboot Thing”.
What you need to do if you have an Ipod Touch is make sure the FIRMWARE that you downloaded is FOR the Ipod Touch, Many sites link directly to the Iphone Firmware which IS different.

Note I had to do it twice since my touch was not connected to the net (which I think does affect the DL)

let t run its course. if you chose the correct firmware it will work just follow the prompts. and be patient. after the program on my computer said it was” done” it took a few more minutes then it continued to install.
Ok so i followed all the instructions, but now all i get is the Apple Logo, and my itunes cant even recgonize my iphone, and i cant turn it on or off, or do anything, any ideas guys pleease

To everyone who has been having problems: Place the redsn0w folder on your desktop, and place the IPSW in the same folder. Follow the directions exactly – LETTER BY LETTER, and complete them. Don’t click out of redsn0w when it’s uploading files to your device, it can cause an error, and freeze the program.

i downloaded the “iPod2,1_4.0_8A293_Restore” (iOS4 for touch2G) from the link provided in step-2 above, and the RedSn0w 0.9.3 (also tried 3.0) but wen i run it, it says “Unable to recognize specified IPSW”. Yes both files are in a folder on desktop. any idea what im doing wrong?

I did the whole jailbreak process up to when it was downloading jailbreak data, then after that the apple logo came up and it just when back to an unactivated phone! the pineapple didnt come up or wtv.
any idea why?
