Since firmware 2.2.1 came out and updated the baseband from 2.28.00 to 2.30.03, many people accidentally updated, and are now stuck on baseband 2.30.03. I wonder how you can “accidentally update” your firmware as it takes a few steps, but anyways… I’ve had a few emails from people asking me how to downgrade baseband 2.30.03 to 2.28.08.
If you’re looking to unlock your iPhone with YellowSn0w, you can’t do that as long as you will on baseband 2.30.03. Unfortunately, you can not downgrade baseband 2.30.03 to 2.28.00! Sorry folks but you should have read the Dev Team’s warning!
Now the good news is that I’m very confident the Dev Team is working on updating YellowSn0w so it works with firmware 2.2.1, baseband 2.30.03.
You can still downgrade your firmware from 2.2.1 to 2.2 in iTunes by hitting SHIFT + RESTORE and selecting firmware 2.2 but you will most likely have errors and even if you manage to downgrade, you still won’t be able to downgrade the baseband.
UPDATE: It’s now possible to downgrade your baseband thanks to pHaseBanDowngrader
pH (Pedro Henrique Franceschi) created a tool to help you downgrade your baseband from 2.30.03 to 2.28.00. To use this tool, you have to have to have an iPhone with bootloader 5.8. If your iPhone was manufactured before September 2008, you’re good. If you bought your iPhone after September 2008 with firmware 2.2.1 out of the box, then you can’t use pHaseBanDowngrader because your bootloader is 5.9.
Here are the instructions on how to downgrade using pHaseBanDowngrader:
1. Download this file
2. SSH into your iPhone and put the downloaded folder (phasebandowngrader) inside the folder /Applications/
3. In MobileTerminal.app, type “login” and enter “root” as user, the default password is “alpine”
4. Now, type “cd /Applications/phasebandowngrader && ./phasebandowngrader”. Follow the screen instructions
5. Done!

The loophole in the software which allowed the yellowsn0w proxy software to work has been patched/fixed in 2.30.03.
Even if the Dev team find another way to exploit the iphone, it’s gonna take some time.
so you publish an article that make you really couse the attention of people that have this problem, for say to then that cant help…………..i think its very bad taste what your doing, may consider to change the title something like…….still imposible Downgrade Baseband 2.30.03 to 2.28.00……….but with that title you may lost the people that enter this fraud article couse already in the title will have the HOLE INFORMATION.

Buy a no-cut piggy back sim for the 2.2.1 firmware off ebay.
There are loads and they work fine.

Hey folks well yes unfortunately if you upgraded on itunes to version 2.30.3 you cant use yellowsn0w as of yet but you can jailbreak the iphone 3g with firmware version 2.2.1 and purchase a turbo sim on ebay make sure you type turbo sim 2.2.1 on the search and that will work with any carrier . i suggest buying a sim that is already cut since you have to insert the sim behind your own sim card. I upgraded with itunes to 2.2.1 firmware and 2.30 baseband. could this be the reason that cydia errors and can’t upgrade when starting or can’t add source like isapzio.

Why on earth would you publish this with that title? Also, you might consider changing the body on it because not everyone “accidentally” upgraded. Some (such as I) purchased a phone after the 2.2.1 and 2.30.03 upgrades and are now seeking info on how to unlock.
As far as the “piggy back sim” or “turbo sim” cards:
They work. Just make sure you read the description on ebay to make sure that the one you are buying works for this firmware and baseband. Some of the older sims only work for the 2.2. I purchased one for $12 shipped. Just search the title “Turbo SIM 2.2.1″ and you should find loads of them. Just gotta wait 3-5 days for shipping, but I bet it takes the dev team longer then that.
A side note about the turbo sims:
Some people say they loose signal when your service is switching from tower to tower (I guess, when you are on the move). Just FYI…

this way you can not downgrade the baseband. iTunes upgrade your baseband in the same way. But bootloader doesn’t allow use baseband lower than your current, so for that moment the one way is to wait. Hopefully yellowsn0w will appear in nearest future. I get back my old phone and waiting waiting waiting…
i excidently upgrade to 2.30.03 fromt he logome app that Fuk up my iphon 3g. i went back to quickpwn to jailbreak and it work!!! u have to use the 5H11 restore ipsw. follow the tutorial then you are set!

Why are there people on this forum laughing at people who have updated by accident. These things happen, we just want our phones working.
In my case my phone bricked coz apple didnt think the website i was one was worthy of their approval! I had to place the phone in restore mode, which as you most probably know means that itunes restores the phone and automatically updates the baseband! I had no choice!
Lets just hope that devteam cracks the problems.
To Neil… I’ve lock my phone in the same way, BUT there was my mistake, and your, and many other people who have make the same thing. Instead of dummy clicking “next”…”next”…”next”… we had to select custom firmware(or 2.2 firmware) by clicking shift+”Restore”(for PC’s). But… what was done that was done and there noway to change it.

Maybe there is a solution there. I can’t test it since I don’t own an iPhone. But the idea is pretty simple. The bootloader seems to forbit a downgrade of the baseband. Now, what about cheating the bootloader? If you want to restore it to the baseband 02.28.00 why don’t downloading the files from http://www.zshare.net/download/53568717c6580e23/ and opening the .fls file with a hex editor like HxD (http://www.mh-nexus.de) and searching for the string 02.28.00 and replacing all the matches to 02.30.04 (an upper version than the one you have 02.30.03). Then doing a manual “update” of the baseband:
Open a Terminal on the iPhone and update the baseband with your new modified .fls.
login as: su
cd /var/root/
password: alpine
chmod 755 BBUpdaterExtreme
launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist
./BBUpdaterExtreme update -f ICE2_02.28.00.fls -e ICE2_02.28.00.eep
reset the iPhone
If it works, just let the others know!!!!!

As far as I have read and understood the Rebel SIM is working for a few people (but not many), and some people have stated that the MAXSIM should work, but here are others also.
It would be nioce if you can use a SIM unlock until our friends DevTeam has a solution to our problem.
Btw, I bought a new Iphone and made the mistake not to read up on the unlocking business before upgrading upon the first connect to itunes… Maybe stupid but stop laughing at us morons, we are sad enugh as it is
Uh, there still one way to make your iPhone work with BaseBand 02.30.03.
Use the i-smart card. Though it works not so soundly, it works.
And one more thing, turn Airplane Mode on and off will NOT result in signal loss.

I am pretty sure that you CAN unlock your iPhone with baseband 02.30.03. The thing is to find out how. Cracking and hacking has been always successful despite of big companies trying to do the opposite thing.
If it where only people saying to themself “it is impossible to crack it”, then it would be obviously no success and DevTeam would be no DevTeam and never had released cracks for us.

turbo sims are a joke, i bought one the other day and the shit stops working, it just cuts off and says no service. so i have 2 reset it which if i get lucky, i can get it to work again. i recommend not wasting any money on that garbage.

Good thought on editing the .fls with a hex editor and changing all of the string values from 02.28.00 to 2.30.04.
I tried this with khexedit, copied the files to a phone with firmware 2.2 and baseband 2.30.03.
BBUpdater appeared to go through the usual process, with no errors, and the phone rebooted, but after reboot it was back to baseband 2.30.03, and not carrier unlocked. For good measure I checked the .eep file in khexedit as well. There are no instances of the version string in this file that I could find, so it did not appear that this file needed to be edited.
Hopefully someone else can point out another idea. Maybe I’m just missing something.

Im also stuck with 3g baseband 2.30.03. I have searched with local mobile repairers and also searched almost every single Forum available online.
To be honest, i dont think dev will be able to unlock this one, cause this 2.2.1 versions is released from the apple to cease the ability of yellowsnow to unlock iphone 3g ( New safari stability etc are just to bluff) .
As, our beloved DEV team has been taking advantage of some holes and flaws by apple in their previous versions. It will be very difficult for any one or any organization to unlock the new baseband.
However, my aim is not to make all of you hopeless but i want you to be focused on real solution to this common problem. The only solution available at this time is to used Unlock sims, i have tried universal, turbo and Rebel sim card, but they are all of no use.
All thease sims are origninally manufactured in China. And then been sold in uk, USa etc with different claims.
But the best among them is Rebel sim card with it i got signals for one day but then no service. The reason why im saying Rebel is good because rebelsimcard.com which claims to be original manufacturer of Rebel sim Card as UK based firm is working to make rebel sim card work properly by offering upgrade to all their sims owners. And i expect they will shortly find a propoer solution to make it work properly.
Meanwhile, my studied showed me that rebel does work for people in different countries with different carriers. So it might work for you.
And i dont mean to hurt anyone feelings, but i have to tell the truth that dev team is not likely to come with the solution this time. If they do, then they deserve to be called Apple Matser.
Meanwhile anyone with a real and fruitful information regarding ecpected solutions, current solutions or any other idea regarding 2.30.03 can discuss with me. I will keep on checking this post will answer in the comments. Please feel free to ask anything.

to someone: this method will not work, because all files have digital signature, so if it doesn’t equal to signature on bootloader it will be ignored.
just a note on rebel sim:
it works fine on e-plus (2.30.03, etc…) in germany, but only on 2g mode.
if u use 3g mode, you wont be able to receive any calls (sms and outgoing calls seem to be ok). in 2g it works stabel for me, except that i am not able to use internet (great !!!!).
we´ll just have to wait 4 the dev-team
Hi guys, I’ve tried out just about every method on downgrading the baseband 02.30.03, and I mean EVERY METHOD PUBLISHED, and as of now, it can’t be done. I have cracked iphone’s firmware 2.2.1, but I really don’t know what files refers to the baseband upgrade (I hope someone does!). If I know this, I might have a method to update or install 2.2.1 firmware overwriting the baseband 02.30.03 with the 02.28.00 and use yellowsn0w to unlock.
So I ask you guys, does anyone knows this???, if I’m successfull (which I will be) I’ll publish the solution on every single site so that the guys from apple can go to hell!!!

As is asid earlier it is very difficult to unlock 2.30.03 as apple as signed it without any holes unlike the previous versions.
The only solution for the moment is to use a unlock sim card cause i think Dev team will need to work really hard to find a cure for us.
The only solution which i suggest is likely to come ( software unlock) is new baseband designed by someone and injected into the system. Thats how it will work other wise all the previous baseband 2.28 etc will be ignored by the baseband itself. So in simple words Dev team needs special softwares and hardwares to introduction new better baseband than 2.30.03 then only it can be accepted.
I suggest you all should start using unlock sim coz this one gonna take a long time.

Just follow these steps.
Download the firmware of iPhone 3g 2.2 and restore it manually using itunes after it is done you can jailbreak it using pwnage tool .
And Then you will b able to Unlock But Please be confident dont loose your confidence. thanks.

First of all jake u can buy any unlock sim u want coz they are almost same as I wrote earlier they are all manufactured in china, no matter wat one says they are same . I have used turbo, rebel , and now I m using a unlock sim from BIT.
Second to Waheed bhai please don’t post comments like a jerk first search a bit and then.
Third to peterpan u can use edge on unlock sim. And it will work fine all you have to do is put ur sim into another mobile(other mobile should be 2g not 3g) and reset network keys, after that open a web browser on that mobile, browse a bit. You are set now,switch on your iPhone 3g without sim and go to settings turn 3g off and turn data roaming on. Switch off 3g. Now put the newly reset sim back into 3g iPhone along with the unlock sim and u r set to use egde.
Fourth to the person who was the only person making sense in this thread until now, mr.panchucks. Yes bro u, wat are u saying I am not able to understand? We are close to what?

I agree with Mr Umer. I`m testing different firmware that I have managed to put together. As of now, I`ve created a firmware that substitutes the modem`s baseband name from 02.30.03 to 02.28.00, but yellowsn0w does not work yet among other software. So, I am testing by my own now, and I`ll be posting in this blog my advances and a possible solution once I get it.
Finally, does anybody knows exactly where are the baseband files placed in the firmware file?

First of all I really appreciat you interest and personal effort to solve the problem. I’m not a hacker nor an softwAre expert neither hardware. I’m a simple iPhone 3g whose foolish friend updated his iPhone.
As I studied online that baseband is a software for the modem which improves the stabiliy and overall connection. Also it is responsible for recognizing whether u r using a valid contractor sim or not. Baseband is signed digitally using cryptological codes method by apple Corp.
What dev team had being doing is finding a hole in the baseband and uses the yellowsn0a to inject that hole and hack the baseband itself.
Now as these holes have been filled by apple yellowsn0w is not likely to find New ones. Also if you propose a baseband than it has to be approved by the existing baseband itself. As 2.28 is lower then 2.30.03 it will be rejected even before comparison.
So in my view the classic yellowsn0w method of unlocking is not likely to work neither u or dev team is going to sign new baseband digitally. So as far as I think it is better if you find other methods and forget yellowsn0w.
So keep on trying who knows panchunks team is going to be the apple next rival.
By the way have read post regarding tsamba method? It is something hot.
And please all of you including panchunks please keep ok posting your ideas or solutions on this thread. By the way is there anyother who is using unlock sim?

That’s it, basiclly the hole is in the name, all the encrypted keys have the 02.30.03 on, as I found out, but if we’re able to change this to 02.28.00 or play with this beween the phone and baseband, I believe it’ll work!!!
I just have to make all changes and decrypt all files, that’s the hard work, once done, we’ll have a new modified baseband.
It’s hard, to be honest, but has to be done!!
And the tsamba method, it’s fine, but didn’t work for us…. but I’ve heard it worked for several people… so it’s up to you guys!!!

First to falcon this tsamba method is working for unlock iPhones like in hongkong Singapore etc. Please keep us updated with ur progress. Who knows if work for u.
Second to panchunks u can’t downgarde the baseband. Yes this is the first basic rule, u can only upgrade it , after replacing all 2.30 files with 2.28 nothing will happen. That’s wat I have been saying coz these files will be rejected as they are lower then the present version.
So u have to upgrade it not downgrade. For uptradtion u need special software and hardware to propose a new better baseband.
I think try to do something else like dogding the baseband like the unlock sims which make the baseband think that we are using the contractor sim.
Hoping that panchunks, falcon and other eagles come with a positive result soon

First to falcon I was addressing dumb not u. And Try to use nice language. I meant to tell the truth. I don’t want u people to save a few bucks and not find solution. It is very good that u found it near you. Secondly, the edge will work follow the instictions I posted earlier for peterpan. Follow all steps carefully and u should be able to use edge.
And to panchunks wat r doing making 2.2.1 with 2.28 baseband man that’s not possible once u have upgraded the baseband to 2.30.03. What r doing is making a firmware with 2.28 baseband, bro it exist already all u have to do is to restore back to 2.2 but the baseband will not change. Firmware can be downgraded but not baseband. That’s the basic rule.
Try to find some other solution, however if you still want to that then search iPhone dev team in wikipedia and in that article their are external links to codes, sources and projects of dev team, this should help.

I know I can’t downgrade, that’s not what I’m doing. What I want, and I’ve made some progress, and I am serious, is to somehow “upgrade” the baseband with an older one, I realize it sounds crazy but it can be done.
I’ve done that with a 2g iPhone. It works but gives me trouble with some apps. Somehow I have to fool iPhone’s firmware.

Second to panchunks that’s sound great, yes u r very right this time, in my view, this the only soft solution by making the baseband fool and upgrading it. Keep on doing hardwork and you will find a positve step forward soon.
I know we all support the Dev team but keep in mind the sooner they come out with a baseband fix or way to downgrade the Turbo sim venders go out of business. Put 2 and 2 together If I sold turbo sims I would ask the Dev team to put off as long as possible maybe even offer them % of sales. I have no proof of any thing just making up theories to ponder.

Thats sound very interesting Stephen but Me, on my personal level, thinks it is not possible cause dev team is not a group of school friends. Infact this group has some ethics and is open to join if you have talent And follow these ethics. The very goal of the team is to make apple software free from signature binding feature, which a problem in baseband 2.30.03. I think they are fair but limited as they a bunch of hackers against apple Corp.
And this time apple has studied the yellowsn0w completely and upgraded it’s firmware to complete the holes which yellowsn0w being using.

Ok this has noting to do with unlocking the baseband but you guys seem educated enough to maybe help me….. I started to download an app and now its stuck on LOADING i tried synching and turning the phone of/on but it still stuck there. Tried turning on wifi and of but no luck. What i want to do is SSH in and manually erase…. does anyone know where i can find the file?
Falcon have u tried soft reset by holding home and power button together for abt 10 seconds.
By the way were u downloading a free app from appstore? Or what?
yea a free app in the app store on my iphone…. i was able to do this yesterday before i replaced the mobleinstallis file (cant remember the exact name. file that lets u install cracked apps) Its just annoying having an app that says loading and you cant delete

My next step was that I updated to 2.2 offically using itunes without custom firmware and told the phone that it was updating the baseband to 2.28.00. I used yellowsn0w and got a signal working. downgrading is not as easy as it seems. continuous commands thru terminal and took me a good 2 hours to downgrade and upgrade. Once my process in release stage, ill will release it

Haha my bad brother, it was a total accident. well it worked out for me I updated to 2.2, baseband got updated, still no signal, i realized I had to modify the bootloader so im running some terminal commands right now to tell the bootloader that 2.08.01 is the one right now, then i updated it again to 2.2 and voila, i got my locked carrier signal, used yellowsn0w to unlock and it work. Time consuming process, to modify the bootloader and to send it back to work too me a good 1 hour. this downgrade to 2.28.00 is gonna take a good 3 hours and a lot of patience

First to falcon the problem with loading app is nothing infact it is your impatient which caused you the problem because when you download a app directly from appstore it usually keep on showing loading with no progress and installs when completely load.
Have to tried to pause the loading app by clicking on it.
Second to jay i don’t think it is possible.
Ha no brotha i started the download last night and it said loading the whole time… then i went to sleep woke up and still “loading” so i turned it on off reset and even tryed to delete it…. then about 1 hour ago(24 hours later) i tried to delete it and it actually let me and the app wasn’t installed….
o yea and i tried pause and starting it over.. pause turn if off then unpause i messed with it in every way and it was stuck… now im scared to download anything from it

Yea it works on the Iphone 3g….not sure about the 3g network if thats what you asking…I have t-mobile and with this sim everything works fine. make/receive calls send/receive text the edge works. Everything i was able to do with baseband 02.28.03 i can do now with this sim. Its totally worth it.

Its APN i never messed with the Vpn and i dont think you need to. Go to setting then general then network and tell me if you have something called Cellular Data Network. If you do you can enter the APN there( epc.tmobile.com). If you dont ON your IPHONE
1. Go to Unlockit.co.nz and click continue
2. custom APN.
3.On the APN enter epc.tmobile.com
4. leave the username and password blank.
5. dont mess with anything eles and click create and it will then install.
Let me know if you get it or have anymore questions

I actually got it working but i am now discovering a shorter method. I dont want to post a long three hour guide with the files since its real pointless. Im looking at a quick process which modifies the bootloader which makes the phone feel its brand new with the oldest baseband 1.43.00 and then restore it using default method via iTunes. What i basicly did was modify the bootloader to confuse it. Once i flased the baseband 1.43.00, id have to confuse the loader to believe that its current baseband update is 1.43.00 by rewriting the new one with old one with bootloader modifications. Once i restore, the bootloader sees the update and then goes to 2.28.00 and it works. Im working on that process but my three hour one is all manual work and it is way to difficult to do by an average user. I will let you know because so far, i got it to work really well. It works but its still a pretty long method of 45 minutes. I want to create a daemon that does this all for you.
He definitely doesn’t work for apple…. he has given me some good advice . also he hasn’t been spamming links to turbosim or anything so i dont think he sells them. He may just think if the Dev team cant do it that it must be almost impossible to do by what is been said about it
I trust Umer doesn’t work for apple or sell turbo sims but Ill state it that my method works, lots of time required, patience, because its really hard to type a million commands on an iphone like that. Im going to work on a daemon and find a shorter method.

I was reading these comments… It is great that someone is trying to do something for this baseband downgrade possibility – even i could do something but i’m always too lazy after work.
Jay if you really managed to downgrade, please dont bother to write any daemon (the process you described has to be done only once). Write only a shell script file and package it with other required binaries/files.
…jay: the reasons why simple shell script would be just about to be enough:
1. iphone is uniform platform
2. it would be possible to review (to increase trust)

About the Edge Fix. I have two Tmobile Sims. One of them The Edge comes up and works with ept.tmobile.com
the other Tmobile Sim does not have edge for some reason.
One is Calif Area code other is South Florida.
Any one know why that would happen with a Tmobile Sim ?

I hope all of you enjoying the best of health and life. Falcon, jay, lippi and all I need your proper advice on this one. As I have been messing with my iPhone 3g for a quite a time now. So all my friends and relatives possessing iPhones asks me for advice.
Today one of my friends asked for a advice and I don’t know the exact solution, I mean I know, but I have tried this thing on my iPhone so far. So I need your answers to suggest him the rite solution. Here is what is the situation:
My friend has a 2g iPhone running 2.2 jailbreaked and unlocked. He has not installed any jailbreak app except 2.2 mipatch to install cracked ipas. He has installed a lot of cracked app stores apps, songs,vdos, etc. Now he want to upgrade to 2.2.1 then unlock and jailbreak it.Is it safe to restore using iTunes and then jailbreak using quickpwn? Wat is the best method to upgrade from 2.2 to 2.2.1?
Second there are two versions of quickpwn that is 2.2.1 and 2.2-5 what is the difference? And which one is best?
Now third and the most important and difficult question. He wants all his data including songs, vdos and most importantly data stored by cracked ipas like rss readers, email apps, games, to be restore when upgrade to 2.2.1. Is it possible? Remember no jailbreaked app is installed except mipatch. Will the iTunes backup will work?
Also iphone 2g owners have written on different forums that they have updated to 2.2.1 as dev team instructed but they are experiencing problems. Like invalid sim, signal loss etc. Wat u people say is it true or these people are too dumb to do a little work perfect?

Umer i would just explain to that person to hold off on updating…. more problems will come out of it then joy. Why does he want to update so badly?
Umer: latest quickpwn is ok for the jailbreak, but the update requires custom fw – not the one which would come from itunes directly… you can make the custom fw (where is not fw for baseband) using pwnagetool and then use itunes to upgrade using that file by holding shift (in win) or option (in mac) when pressing restore button.
yea but there is no point…. not much was updated in 2.2.1 other than the baseband so what is the big deal in updating if you got everything you want on 2.2. You would basically be making a 2.2 custom fw that reads 2.2.1
yep, that is true. sadly i got my iphone updated – knowing exactly what will happen – while trying to finish some iphone app, getting drunk, getting pissed off about some code signing error…. Lets hope the baseband downgrade or unlock with latest version will be successful at some time.

wait… because there is no real reason to update yet. Everything will work and look the same on a 2.2. If he decides to update to 2.2.1 everything will be more complicated and he really isn’t updating anything but the baseband to 2.30.02 and thats something no on wants… If he has At&t its not such a big deal to update because he can still get service and jailbreak but if he has T-Mobile then its not worth it.
I don’t want to release it to anyone because it is a time consuming process. Let me work out a faster method and if i am able too, i will release it. Like again, i do not work for the dev team but I know they will have a better solution than mine and a faster way

As I have been saying this time it will very diificult to come with a soft lock for 2.30.03. And the reason is very simple apple studied the yellowsn0w very carefully this time and updated baseband so yellowsn0w will not find any holes which it has been utilizing in the past. So the classic yellowsnow method will not work with basband 2.30.03 neither the downgrading will work.
If a soft unlock will come I can bet it will not be yellowsn0w. If you are expecting a soft unlock for 2.30.03 then also expect it to a different thing than yellowsn0w.
Second to falcon, bro thanks for advice and I will suggest my friend not to update as u says nothing much improved. But I think u misunderstood the situation my friends owns a 2g iPhone. 2g 2g 2g 2g bro, and for 2g iPhones I learnt that there is no baseband upgrade in 2.2.1?
Every 2g phone i come across is very easy to unlock and does not require yellow snow to use another Sim.
All our troubles are only 3g phones. If you have a 2g phone consider yourself lucky. Now I have a phone that is legally unlocked by apple When I hook to iTunes it tells me my phone is Unlocked. So If I can find a way to change the imei and the icid well then Might have something there!!. Imaging using iTunes to unlock your phone eh!
Umer I am using a iPhone 2g updated via Itunes running 2.2.1 phone is unlocked and jailbroke using dev method everything works fine also have a 3g running 2.2.1 is jailbroke but have a turbo sim to unlock (tmobile) the only problem with the 3g is that swirleymms doesn’t work with a turbo sim unless I’m missing something as of the 2g upgrade will not harm anything will loose all hacked apps though

May I remind you ben that before 2.30.03 was released, there were also other firmwares. Ive been trying forever to downgrade my iphone from 2.08.01 to 1.43.00 and my firmware down to 2.0 so please do not say I am lieing as I was deciding to release the current method and files which I have but if I am being continued being called as “ass” or a liar and making stuff up with you guys, i’d leave it to the dev team as you all trust and you all should because they are reliable and I was just trying to help out not bash you anyone else’s idea.
Jay I think people just want hope that something will happen. Seems Dev Team has put this on the back burner which tells me that they must get their initial info from yet another who has made no progress. Firmware is like PRAM its hard to purge. I built my own ispw over the weekend and when I tried to dump it on the phone I got a “Radio” error and the phone bricked. so I must have struck a nerve anyway. I since rebuilt the phone and its up and running again on Tmobile but still 2.30.03 Dammit JIM!!!!
Funny thing is you can put any sim you want in a iphone and make it work (with turbo sim) EXCEPT a Legal AT&T sim I got a kick out of that one. Only way was to call AT&T and give them my new iemi number from new phone.

I’ve been following up all the discussions and guys, just chill out. First, Jay, if you really came up with the solution and it’s a 3 hr method, I think if we all have been waiting for 2 months for a solution, we wont mind 3 more hours.
As some may know, I’ve been working on my own, I even made my iphone to look as if it was working on 02.28 baseband, but still, no full working unlock solution. So I don’t know, as I said, maybe Jay is a very smart guy, but I tried different methods, I even got my iphone complete messed up, then back again…. and I think I’m also very familiar with commands, firmware crack, software usage, but I’m still not able to do the downgrade or unlock patch.
I’m not giving up yet, for sure I’ll keep trying and without a doubt I will post a method once I get it.
The good news is, that from a very good source, I know that Dev Team already was able to unlock the 02.30.03 baseband, but it’s unstable. So the end of all this will come soon!!

Besides, I pretty agree with Ben who says that Jay’s words are too mysterious and tell nothing. I believe, if he were to something, he’d published it to us and to the whole world, and the this “3 hour method” as he says seems very unreal. If I were him and really have managed to do some method, no matter how long that method could be, I would already tell the method to the world, because this method should be genious that even Dev-Team couldn’t manage to do meatime.
I hope I’m wrong Jay, and you surprise us some day, but it’s really hard to believe man.

Well, I plan to record a video proving my baseband is 2.30.03 and then show you my imei or serial number proving that I didnt swap the phones and then pause recording while im downgrading and then show you the end result and then install yellowsn0w proving it works. 4. Type in: su
5. Type in the password: alpine
6. Type in: chmod 755 BBUpdaterExtreme
7. Type in: launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist
8. Type in: ./BBUpdaterExtreme update -f ICE2_02.28.00.fls -e ICE2_02.28.00.eep
9. Reboot your iPhone
10. Now your iPhone must be in the 02.28.00 baseband!
11. You can check it in Settings>General>About

I have been saying this rite from the start that 2.30.03 soft unlock is not likely to coMe and I Am still on my stand.
Please try to make sense if dev team says they Are not able to do with a team of more then 20 reknowed hackers and open codes and projects. How can a single person wrting comments on little blogs can do this.

Apple is going to release 3.0 firmware in June And they will show wat they are doing in firmware 3.0 on march 17 . So, firstas I said earlier soft unlock of 2.30.03 is very difficult for any team. Second, let assume, that dev team has found the solution but they will never ever release it before apple release 3.0 . If they release early then they fool team, and me mon my personal level thinks they are not fool and will Not release untill July. Coz they don’t want apple to study their new unlck method and fill the hole in 3.0. And remember 3.0 will be revolution in iPhone os and will be a major step. So dev team os considering long term approach,
So be patient if you want soft unlock.

Answering the question to Umer, I have a friend who works in the same place that one of the Dev Team’s guys. He is the one who told me that Dev Team is very possitive on getting the unlock soon. Besides that, you may want to check iClarified web site for more updates.
About Jake’s method, I already tried that, there are a couple of things missing there, but whatever changes that method does, (wich is called Tsamba Method), yellowsn0w still doesn’t work. So this method may work for some companies but it doesn’t work for north america, and I’m totally sure of that.
So keep it up guys, I’ll let you know if something else comes up.
yes , panchunks is rite it is the tsamba method and it will not work. It worked for a couple of people with unlocked phones in Singapore. And it will definitely not likely to work for Non-Asians.
Second panchunks, as I said already if dev team has found the method to ulock 2.30.03. I don’t think they will release it before firmwAre 3.0 is out. Don’t you agree with me? Just think apple going to release the most awaited firmware with solutions to all flaws of iPhone. And definitely every single iPhone owner will new firmware and will want it to be unlocked. So I think dev team will wait untill the 3.0 is released or atleast they get some information regarding the baseband, boot loaders etc.
By the way that’s wat I thinks, what are you expecting And when?

Umer is probably correct… As one member of dev team said in their blogs comments recently that next fw upgrade is chance to find software unlock not this which is only purpose is to block the hole yellowsn0w was using.
It would be very nice to compare 2.2.0 and 2.2.1 if there are actually any other patches except change of version number
But basically that latest update was for yellowsn0w, nothing else.
Even if they find some other hole i think it is wise to keep that hidden… just in case that the same method would work in the next upgrade.
The best thing would be to know if the baseband fw will be completely rewritten (which is actually possible if you consider the problems iphone 3g has with phone calls in some networks like here in the “official” network – of course they say that the problem is in service provider, but…) in next upgrade.. then there wouldnt be any reason for holding the soft unlock back + completely rewriting can also provide lots of new security problems.

Yes, the iphone unlock apparentely is ready but the firmware 3.0 will be released on march 17… So before the unlock be released, Dev Team is going to wait to unlock Firmware 3.0 and stay upgraded.

I just got the phone for a week, updated it and now it doesnt work, I downgraded fw to 2.2 but the baseband is still 2.3.03. In the top left of the screen its displayin a dash and four dots like “-….” . What does that mean? Is there any other way other than the baseband ‘downgrade’ nor the turbo sim, i.e. a number that i could dial to unlock the phone in order to work on any network? coz i heard rumors.. OR SHOULD I LOSE ALL HOPE??

andrew… yes maybe that will be the first option to use iphone os 3.0 with old unlocked baseband, but i expect that apple will make it incompatible with old baseband – just to prevent this kind of hack. That is far too easy to do that they wouldnt do that – just make some minor difference in the interface between iphone main fw and baseband fw and there you have solution – old baseband doensnt work anymore.

Some ppl didnt accidentally upgraded, I just purchased an iphone and it already has the 2.30.03.. There is no way to downgrade the baseband only the firmware so dont even bother to waste ur time.. 4 now buy the turbo sim card IT DOES WRK!! you just have to buy the right one.. Diphonemaster, none of those proxy sims are working perfectly… all of them has possibility to drop out from network once and while… also using 3g is not an option because incoming calls wont work. Those “right ones” are partially still a scam – none of those which i know, are working as promised.

I bought a Rebel Sim from rebelsim.com in UK. You can flash this one with their updates. I also bought a Gevy3g sim and one other i cannot remember. they all Work rebel sim is best one but its 15pounds. the gevy was $3 on ebay.
The problem with turbo sims is some times you have to put your sim in a legal phone let it register with tower then take out and put in your iphone. If the sim is newly registered it will not work in iphone untill you do above. Some times y ou can reboot phone or toggle airplane mode on and off. When your driving around the turbo sim does not like to leave the last tower it was registered with and will lose signal and eventually go to no service. reboot retoggle or put sim back in legal phone for moment. This is how turbo sim life is. but it does work.
Also with the correct APN settings you get totally free but limited surfing tmobile thinks your on a regular phone and gives some internet.
I have one other iphone that is 2.2.1 with 2.30.03 baseband and I can put any sim i want and pops right in. Totally Unlocked This is the best solution for all your worries count up how much money and time you spend unlocking and jailbreaking shopping for turbo sims and see if its worth $800. Or is all this just for fun and something to do?
Stephen, so you cant say that it works perfectly. They should mention about these problems when they are selling these.. and give solutions if they have. Currently they have been advertised with false information!
Kepu yes that is true and with turbo sim some times it only really enables phone calls and with out wifi other features do not work.
If you have a sim account that provides 3g data the turbo sim will function. But yes the turbo sim people do not mention these issues. I believe on the rebelsim.com web site they do tell you issues with turbo sim. Personally I do not like it because its something else to stuff in the phone. I also tried to get a multi sim to work in the iphone so I could put all my sims on to one card then use multiple numbers. This does not work because you cannot get Ki from a v2 sim and the that is how the sim register’s with tower to give service.
Turbo Sims are a pain the the *** but its better than not having service. So far in my unlocked phone I have put in 4 sim’s Locus, cingular, AT&T and 2 tmobile sims they all pop right in.
As mentioned above apple is will release 3.0 soon then hopefully there will be a unlock. There are ways to buy unlocked phones but then I did some research and the countries that apple sold these phones too has since discontinued and found partners in those areas to join forces with.

The new 3.0 preview was exactly that, a preview. It is expected to come out ‘this summer’ and as of now, only developer copies are available to experiment with and they are not the final versions. It introduces copy/cut/paste, nano – shake to shuffle, mms and other such features.
I wrote 2 posts about the new firmware 3.0: one that sums up everything that was said, and one that sums up everything missing.

How about taking 2.28 baseband, club it with 2.2.1 and restore it with shift+restore through iTunes ?? Well as far as i know, when we restore, iTunes erases baseband and then upgrades it. Anyone tried this ?? Correct me if I am wrong

We all are stuck on 2.30 BB, its been over a month now. When you can release it now, please do it for us, as we can wait for 3.0 update untill u can figure out to crack that one. If we are thirsty now, we can’t drink water tomorrow.

@2Groove: rebel sim if you can spare 3g (you wont be able 2 recieve incoming calls otherwise). 4 internet u can use a modem tool from cydia. although i got the feeling, that if u use it too often/too long (?) u have to use the above mentioned routine with another phone 2 clear your sim again…..

Stephen, Those are iPhones that are purchased locked from the carrier but the carrier permits an unlock on the device unlike AT&T or Rogers in Canada.

I showed you all that link because of so much strugging to get a phone the way you want it, It is possible to have one already Unlocked. I did lot of research then finally bought one. Then I jail broke but Did not activate it. After iTunes restored the phone it came up with message that said “Contacting Apple Update Server”
then couple minutes later it says.

@jay have you considered Clippy for all of yhose numerous terminal commands? Do you happen to know that clippy can memorize an unlimited numbers of entries and paste them? Could you please calculate the ammount I would take us to downgrade the baseband according to your method? Also, have you used openiboot in your process? Would that help you in the hastening of the procedure? Like, sudo ./loadibec ? (if I recall it right) wouldn’t it be easier to manipulate baseband from within the Linux kernel? Have you sudo ./oibc?

As we all see, Jay hasn’t got anything. Now, it’s getting too obvious. All these promises from him are just bullshit. It won’t help if everyone of us will ask him again for the solution, because JAY DOESN’T HAVE THE SOLUTION. It was clear from the beginning, and only hopeless and naive people can believe such a nonsense. I suggest we just ignore this guy and chat here with each other about other issues.
I try to Decrypt Iphone File System of 2.2 restore package, but the file 018-4380-1.dmg is protected by password.

By the way the folder /dev/ contain 0 byte files can’t be changed.
I think this help a Little to solve the problem.
MMB_XP: in linux or unix generally that /dev folder contains handles for devices… the “content” of those “files” is dependent on that device and therefore it cannot have any “size”..

@Falcon: Problem I have with those x-sims.. it doesn’t work, it takes ages to get the signal back even when putting in another phone and then back in the iphone and I just have to stay at my desk, bacause as soon as I moove 10ft I lost the signal.. I first had a turbosim, then buyed a rebelsim because they the with new upgrade the signal lost should be resolved.. and.. no way god damned.. If I only hadn’t updated to fucking baseband.. sorry guys, but I’m gettin a little more frustrated each day.. Greetz..

It works. If you go Settings > Network > turn on Edge (and off 3g at times) The E icon will appear. then in Settings > Network > Cellular data network > APN
put in ept.tmobile.com you get tmobiles limited internet. Weather News etc.

@2groove: I tried tons of turbosims so far and the most reliable and stable one for me is the Rebel sim with the latest firmware (v.61!). When it goes out of service it actually refinds the network within seconds whenever needed.
The only thing that doesn’t work with all of those sims is getting incoming calls on the 3G network so 3G needs to be switched off
To prevent yourself from buying a fake better buy it at the rebel website (rebelsimcard.com) and make sure you have the latest firmware installed.
Beware: this one works for me and I’m in Europe.

I dont know why all you people are treating bad Jay and Eddy. Instead of saying bad things to them why dont we see what he has to offer. Maybe it works maybe it doesnt. But at least we can see some progress. I ve been waiting for 3 Months now and tried everything there is on the net. Nothing works i spent to much money on turbo , rebel , etc. None of them works perfectly. Rebel have been saying that they are going to release an update for quite a while now and yet nothing is released. I wish that Dev-Team will find a solutuin cause now i am really starting to loose hope.
@Jason: Rebel claims that 3G fully works with their latest firmware for over 90% of the providers. I obviously belong to the last 10% since at my place with 3G switched on I can send and receive data and I can make calls but I can’t receive calls, they end up in voicemail right away.
So now I have 3G switched off all the time and only switch it on for a while when I need high speed internet, knowing that I won’t receive any calls then.
With 3G switched off everything works fine and reading simple e-mails can be done through 2G. It’s not perfect but at least I can use my iPhone…
MMB_XP: that method cant be used directly… somewhat similar would work for upgrading baseband not downgrading.
Downgrading is impossible by software unless you can make that baseband processor to think that it is upgrade.. this might be possible if you can make that old baseband fw to seem like upgrade (i suppose that you need some key which only apple has to sign that modified fw) or having baseband processor to execute code, which makes bb processor not to require upgrade (if this is the case then it is quite easy to make yellowsnow to work directly in new bb).
Other possibility to downgrade is to desolder that bb memory from phone and program it using some pc, but this is at least difficult, requires opening the phone, soldering it and these programmers are also expensive (at least more than 1 iphone).
I just want to see his instructions. Im not purposely going to upgrade my baseband again just to test it out when I spent like 3 hours downgrading. Don’t give eddy a hard time because then your other hope is gone to. Maybe he has something similar to me and its just a common thing.

I’ve recently bought a series of iphones and it seems that all the new ones that are sold at the moment are released with 02.30.03. So dev-team should find something so get yellowsnow working with that one. Or everyone has to downgrade there iphone when they get it..

@Kirby, I think I’ve bought some rebelsim that isn’t working correctly cuz when I insert it in my iphone I get the message ‘no simcard’ and the after a while (after rebooting sometimes 3 to 4 times) it finds it and then i’ve to manipulate sometimes for about 30min to get a signal.. not really cool huh..
I think I will spend 25€ at rebelsimcard.com, hope those will work correctly..

I know that the thing i am saying is that without update in itunes you still have the 2.30.03. With other words all the new iphones owners that want use an other sim are screwed unless yellowsnow will work with 2.30.03.

2groove, we all understand your frustration but I’m just not going to release mine end of that because I really didn’t care who was bashing me or hating on me until Falcon became an ass. I said I was going to release it on the 28th and go look at his responses. Instead of blamimg me, i think he should be blamed for all of this because in the next two days you would of have it. Eddy said he was going to post it on Friday which is tomorrow so why not just wait? If its bothering you that much, go on kijiji buy a 25 dollar phone and just use it till then. Another option is just bear with it or you can trade your iPhone for an unlocked one in Hong Kong, or Austrialia and places like that. Also you can sell your iPhone on Kijiji or Craigslist and buy one from there thats already unlocked. The dev team downgraded the baseband way long ago before yellowsn0w came out. Do some googling guys.

1. Download Mobile Terminal from Cydia.
2. Download the file from this post, uncompress it and upload the files via SSH to /var/root/
3. Open Mobile Terminal
4. Type in: su
5. Type in the password: alpine
6. Type in: chmod 755 BBUpdaterExtreme
7. Type in: launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist
8. Type in: ./BBUpdaterExtreme update -f ICE2_02.28.00.fls -e ICE2_02.28.00.eep
9. Reboot your iPhone
10. Now your iPhone must be in the 02.28.00 baseband!
11. You can check it in Settings>General>About

the upgrade start normally till it boot BUT finaly it return to the 2.30.03 BB and none to the 2.28.00 has it says under a Firmware 2.2 I did the same process on the 2.1 and 2.2.1 but nothing turn back to the orignal BB unlockable.
Aakash, that shouldnt harm or help… not harming because it is doing nothing. not helping because it is doing nothing (older bb fails version check in bb processor and it is not going to the actual flash memory for bb firmware – it might seem like doing something because the connection to bb processor is most likely working normally, but it doesnt write its memory with that incoming data). This is why i suppose that it would be possible to flash that bb memory directly if you just remove it from your phone. Usually the equipements for doing this are quite expensive and require anyway some skills – these ics are not meant to be disassembled.
i suppose that you have tried to restore your phone…
DUCK, downgrading at least in theory requires some bug in running bb firmware that you could have made it not to block older version upgrades – sadly these fw files are signed by apple and that is why you cant change anything in it, unless your change wont change the signature, which is highly unlikely.

thank god… there is new life to iphone 3g. it works…. i just update to the iphone firmware 3.0 and again downgrade to 2.2.1 firmware. this works me.

Martin, totally wrong. BB fw along with that iphone os3.0 is backward compatible and cannot be downgraded but will work also with older iphone os (like 2.2) – but the bbfw 2.28 doesnt work with iphone os 3.0. I suppose that iphone os 3.0 requires that your phone is registered to dev program – i havent tried even if i could, just because it is beta and i have read enough about problems with it.

2groove, but it is more likely to find critical bug from that os3.0 bb, because as far as i know there has been made lot of changes, to allow downgrade and unlock. But i understand dev teams opinion that anything related to those beta version bugs shouldnt be published to avoid apple fixing them before official release.

I still HIGHLY doubt a new iPhone will come in June. Last year the 3G came out so I doubt it. AT&T doesn’t even have a 4G network nor does Rogers in Canada so What can they add in it that the 3G doesnt have.
Jay, I doubt that 4G network has nothing to do with next iphone. Here in Finland there are some local networks, but not anything serious. That wimax (4g) has had its problems because it is not so mobile, there is also some wimax mobile, which should deal better this doppler effect -problem. I suppose that next iphone will be just 3g phone with faster 3g (7.2mbit/s) but who knows.. One thing is for sure, if apple waits for 4g networks for next iphone it is most likely going to wait at least 3-4 years to have any customers.

I tested the Gevey-3G Plus2 and it didn’t get calls with 3G switched on and it went out of service within minutes. I bought mine on ebay though so it might as well be a fake one.
My Rebel-sim didn’t loose signal for a full week now but I’m still looking for a sim that can receive calls on 3G.

Umer , so you still think that dev team are still working on this unlock solution? It is 3 months that i have 1 of my phone locked with no signal and it not mine its my girlfriend’s mobile. You know what i mean , she has been asking for it a million time and i always say maybe next week there will be something to unlock it. But why are not you using unlock sim on your girlfriend mobile? I have been using the unlock sim for a month now, no problemo except I have to reset network keys once in a week and no 3g

Thanks umer for understanding. The main problem is that I have rebel sim but she made a contract with a local carrier and this carrier has a 3G only network so the rebel works only for outgoing calls and no incoming. If i turn off 3G of course it wont work. And we cannot cancel the contract now

I read above where some one had issues with rebel sim. My phone makes and receives calls no problem with tmobile and using a rebel sim.
I can surf web using the E not 3g (i have not tested 3g) but i could if you like.
either way I just wanted to say the rebel sim works fine. One of my iphones is Model number MB496X This model number is Perm unlocked by apple. When I do a restore iTunes says “Congrats your phone is unlocked” it has bb 2.30.03 and works with any sim.
So there is a switch in that makes it capable for use with any network.
Stephen, I agree the Rebel sim works fine except that it doesn’t receive calls with 3G switched on. It would be nice if you could test that so we can agree on that.
I don’t understand why you use a Rebel sim if your phone is fully unlocked unless that’s a different iPhone but Apple doesn’t only release unlocked iPhone models like yours, they can also fully unlock any locked iPhone by changing the code in the so called “seczone” of the iPhone through iTunes.
Were I live providers are obliged by law to offer an unlock opportunity for customers so if I pay my provider (T-Mobile) 120 Euro’s and give them my IMEI, my iPhone will be permanentely unlocked through iTunes by Apple within 15 minutes.
…and yep, I’m really considering that since I’m sick and tired of those turbosims

The rebel sim works with 3g on Edge on or off. Phone receives calls and makes calls fine.
I do not use a rebel sim in my unlocked phone I have it in another iPhone I have 3 of them. Here is what I have learned about Unlocked phones. The model number I mentioned before is Permanently unlocked its sold that way. IF you pay your provider for an unlock VIA IMEI !!!! they will unlock your phone. Then apple comes out with an update and you update your phone it will LOCK again then you have to call your provider and bitch and they will enter the code again and you can unlock it. they show which ones are sold Unlocked and what model numbers they sell to what countries. MB496X is Australia
Bootloader seems to forbit a downgrade of the baseband. That seems to be the bad truth. Now, what about cheating the bootloader >> to restore it to the baseband 02.28.00 as 02.30.03 downloading the files from http://www.zshare.net/download/53568717c6580e23/ and opening the .fls file with an hex editor like HxD (http://www.mh-nexus.de) and searching for the string 02.28.00 and replacing all the matches to 02.30.03, not to 02.30.04 then doing the manual update of the baseband integrated in the 2.2.1 firmware…

@Marcos try reset the network keys on ur sim, it should work. And don’t travel more then say around 15 miles. If you do then u may need to reset network keys again.

Now wait for dev solution, and I think it will be released at the end of June.and also think the rebel sim may find a upgrade to make all 3g networks work fine. And will be available for your unlock sim for free.

2groove, it is bit useless unless you can alter the original file without corrupting the files signature.. there are several checks for upgrading baseband.. first the data must be having valid signature (like for also running baseband) then the version number must be bigger than the old one. Also the version number is it self signed (if i remember correctly).
Still the downgrade solution is to hack the current bb firmware or bootloader not to do these checks or do the downgrade manually on the bb program memory chip.. some flash/sram custom combination… so i’m not so sure if it is so easily to flash even with good tools and knowledge.
@ Jason: As you can see from the link Stephen provided (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1937) a lot of carriers offer authorized unlocking but I’m afraid O2 isn’t one of them
You may double check with your carrier however since the list is not completely up to date.
@ Stephen: When I have my iPhone unlocked by authorization of my carrier it will not lock again when I update. It will stay fully unlocked forever.
According to the devteam the difference between a locked and an unlocked iPhone is that the seczone of an unlocked iphone has been transformed by Apple secret code.
It’s my guess that that’s what Apple does when they unlock my phone through iTunes… but what do I know.
I hope there was some kinda solution cuz those rebel & turbo sims really aren’t working correctly.. I think we have to face the truth.. there will never be a solution, we all have an expensive IPOD now.. Greetz..

Well, I just got done reading this bullshit, all of you. Soft unlock for the 3g is possible, for the people who have tried method after method I admire your efforts. Jay (your full of shit) we don’t need your 3 hour script shell on how to downgrade, you said it yourself “you’ve tried version after version to unlock the baseband.” Dev. team if any of you are reading my post, I’ve donated a shit-load of money to you guys to support the community with the help and freedom of our phones. Rumors of Dev team taking money from turbo sim have thrived through other forums. If I was to find out from an actual source that this under the table shit is going on I want everyone to know that all my donations / support by large groups will decompose quickly. As for everyone in this post, instead of treating each other with garbage giving out info that doesn’t work, you’re not being positive and delaying any potential successful unlock. Be kind to each other and work together that is how we overcome a company of greed @ppL3 and @T&T. As some people said, ” Dev team would be jeopardizing a future soft unlock if released 2.30 baseband.” We all want 3.0 Cut and paste, SMS picture, don’t bug for a soft unlock adapt and create your own version ( if it’s possible)
P.S Don’t support the SIM (turbo SIM) it’s unstable!

Simcards do not work and I agree with the theory that they are holding back for the release of V3 iphone. DONT BUY sim adapters…only the people who sell them say they work. My friends & I have all tried multiple ones…they may work, for a minute, hour, a day (longest was two weeks

My sim is still very reliable and stable; not a single “out of service” so for me it’s a good temporary solution untill the devteam releases a software unlock.

iPhone OS 3.0 seems o been the the best upgrade for the iPhone ever with already 100+ features like cut, copy and paste. All we need is to stay with the old 02.28.00 Baseband in the 2.2 (not 2.2.1) Firmware version and wait for our dear DevTeam to release the greatest fix for all us that still waiting for the woow!

I see lot of posts about turbo sims. Yes they are problematic but they do work. I have tested my locked iphone with turbo sim and tmobile. it does work not great but it works. I still bought a unlocked iphone from Australia which is really great.
I put in Tmobile, 02 Europe, AT&T, Locus and voda phone sim and they all work.
BB 2.30.03 only catch is the phone costs $714 US dollars.

Hi guys.. I don’t know if you guys already red the iPhone Dev Team Blog.. but seems to me that we guys with our besaeband 2.30.03 are fucked.. They don’t even mention anything over BB 2.30.03 or 4.20.xx. They even want to get Firmware 3.0 working with BB 2.28.00.

I think you are right 2groove. We can throw them away , i think dev team cannot find a clue of this baseband, this time i think apple fucked us all, and also they figured up how to stop dev team. Dev will never open it from what they have written.

@M_exx, if apple has managed to write bug free implementation for bb then it is impossible to software unlock/downgrade
@2groove, which carrier is doing that for other phones which is not theirs? and what is your carrier? does it require that you have same model number as what they sell? i thought that these are forbidden in contracts between apple and carrier – possibly same model selling carriers can mistakenly do the unlock.
@jay, did you compile that proof-of-concept video of downgrade yet?
generally that bb (4.something) for that iphone os 3.0 is much more likely to have implementation bugs that the 2.30, because it has obviously been rewritten and added new functionalities.
other solution could be if the bug has been found in bootrom like in 2g model resulting all the models being always unlockable… or even in the baseband processor (highly unlikely to find bugs in hardware).

Ok, I’m gonna try to explain the whole situation. I’ve bought my Iphone from some Dutch guy (I’m from Belgium) he stated on the net that is was a unlocked phone with FW 2.2.1 and BB 2.30.03. But when I received the iPhone it was deliverd with a TurboSim.
so locked on their carrier… 
Now on the apple website there is a link that says that some carriers in some country’s are willing to unlock the phone for a small price (in my case a 100$) so I think I’m gonna head for the ‘dutch-land’ sometime soon..
Never mind that if the dev team could share some info about a unlock… i would wait.. but I can’t stand those rebel/turbo sims anymore..
All do I’m pretty sure they have the unlock and they just wan’t to wait for the right moment.. but to me it’s taking to long..

I’d like to remind you that I have way more than one iPhone. I have around 5 and all of my iPhones except 2 of them are from AT&T USA. I can even give you the model numbers to prove it.

Umer, you cannot call Apple a fucked up company because they are doing what they paid for. They want everyone to have their device but they cannot do it because no carrier will want to support the iPhone because it became extremely easy to unlock. AT&T will make 0 profits from all the people who take the phone and go abroad so they have to stop that in that case that is why apple is making updates and stopping this because they are getting paid for it. In countries where the carrier doesn’t care or is not allowed to, they have it unlocked.

@jay you are right with your observations but your conclusion is wrong. The whole thing is reverse in this case. The upper hand is of apple. There is no doubt at&t invested millions in the developement of iPhone. But the problem is that iPhone is revolutionary product and much more sold then AT&T and apple expected during development.
iPhone is now the symbol of modern mobile technology. Man it changed the entire mobile industry and u think apple is dependent on AT&T? Iphone is more then a mobile, it is revolutionary product. At&t, t mobile etc they are available to apple at their doorstep.All companies are trying to be apple partner for next iPhone. If apple want to they can sell their iPhone through any celular service from July onwards. And beleive more then 2 celular companies are in race to be next iPhone seller.

Has anybody tried downloading an older version of itunes and restoring it through that. Its should change it to a an older baseband. Then go back and use pawnage to restore it with 2.2.1 without changing the baseband….. Im gonna try it and write back.

@rafael, that is not going to work… because the newer baseband is the one which prevents downgrading – itunes has nothing to do with the meaningful version and signature checks, which have to be passed to downgrade.

M_exx, it wont unlock anything… but generally you are required to have your phone registered to dev program if you want that 3.0 beta to activate via itunes.
If you dont have any reason to update to 3.0 then dont do that
i have it on my devphone, but it really is a beta… it is too buggy for normal use – youll get only annoyed.

Folks, just to help everyone out, I am a genuine hacker and have been reading these posts for a while now. These are the facts about the discussions in this forum:
1. Don’t upgrade to 3.0 yet. It will kill your yellowsnow and you won’t be able to get it back even if you downgrade back to 2.2.1 or lower.
2. It is impossible to downgrade your baseband. It is locked in because patches are installed to take away yellowsnow. It is impossible to strip patches away. ANYONE who tells you they can is just pulling your chain…just use a rebel sim. They work great and they don’t drop signal between towers anymore and you don’t have to carry around a T-mobile phone to reactivate the signal anymore, either…
3. There IS a software unlock for baseband 2.30.03 but the Dev team isn’t stupid enough to release it now because of the impending 3.0 release. There’s no reason to show your hand now just so Apple can patch it before the official release of the final version. It’s the same situation with the jailbreak for 3.0….you’ll just have to wait because the 3G is going the way of the 1g and 2g. Once Apple has the new iphone out they won’t worry about the 3G anymore and soon enough all of them will be unlockable because Apple just simply won’t devote resources to an outdated phone that they don’t sell anymore…
I don’t care if you say I’m full of it or whatever. I’m just trying to help people not buy into what some certain predatory folks on this blog seem to get a kick out of….

1. yes your are right.
2. are you genuine salesman? at least with any of those rebelsim downloadable versions they dont work good – stupid to lie about them. you cant use 3g (no incoming calls/sms) and you’ll get your signal dropped at some point – maybe after a few hours or few weeks. They can be highly illegal in many countries unlike software unlock method.
3. hopefully they have. jailbreak doesnt have anything to do because iphone and iphone 3g (or what you call 2g) are jailbroken by hardware so apple cant block that with any software update – that same method will work always with future updates in those phones only that you have to find new locations which you make your changes.
ipod 2g jailbreak (for life) could have helped with future iphone, because they most likely have mostly same hardware inside them.

As I said before I callled the carrier where the iPhone was locked by and they are willing to unlock my iPhone for only a 100$.
But just to try I’ve bought the new generation of Rebelcard and also a usb programmer so I can update the Rebelcard myself. I’ll try that this evening if it working good you will get a detailed review of me.
If after extensive testing those rebelsims aren’t working correctly, i’ll make use of the unlock service of the carrier.

The carrier is T-Mobile and the thing is that I have to buy a prepaid card charge it with the 100$ and then ring them to get the phone unlocked. Should take a week for the unlock.

RebelSim: This is a FUCKING peace of shit.. not working at all, constantly losing signal, constantly saying ‘no simcard’ and those guys of RebelSimcard.com said that it could be a defect one.. so I bought a new one.. result.. it’s even crapier than the other fucking one.. and guess what.. Those guys don’t give any fucking support.. nice huh..
TurboSim: Works, but when you move up to 15miles you lose the signal and you have to reset your sim network keys.. and no 3G!
So.. should I try the Gevey..? or not..? I don’t now anymore..

I use the Gevey one now. Works ok for me. With all networks also abroad.
No 3g tho but normal GPRS. It will do i guess. Calling / texting all works fine.

Kepu, no I’m not a salesman and I certainly have no reason to lie to anyone here. Using a sim unlock is the only way for 2.30.03 so they gotta go to somebody! Sitting around bitching on this blog sure isn’t making it happen!
It doesn’t matter which brand you use just make sure you don’t get a knockoff. I’ve gone through several different turbosim/rebelsim things and I’m telling you right now if you get a copy they are shit. They’ll work for like a week and then fizzle out. I’m sure these are all made in China so I guess what matters is what part of China its made in!
I found one turbo sim from “laptopgenie” on ebay and a rebel sim from “menabadu.” They both worked way better than the chinese copy I got duped into buying first which made my phone go down at a critical time and nearly cost me thousands of dollars. THAT pissed me off….that doesn’t mean I’m not hoping for a software unlock because even though my sims have been working alright its still like gambling…
And yes you are right about the jailbreak for life thing but aren’t they coming out with a new type of iphone? That was the impression I’ve been getting…if they do I’m sure they’ll remember to plug any holes the dev team yaps about!

hello, everyone the DEV team is working extremely hard. myself and others think that they will just stop working on an unlock for 2.2.1 (with baseband 2.30.03) and wait until apple officilly releases the 3.0 firmware and then will release an unlock. they have already jailbroken the 3.0 firmware so just be a little more patient. I Give My support to the dev team =)
@shane, i was kidding.. but i have tried both original rebelsim (with all possible their softwares) and some other… all were working without 3g until they stopped working… which happened something between few minutes to one week after installation. it might depend also your carrier how long it will work, but my opinion is that they are highly unstable and you will get angry when it happens and you dont have tools available to fix it that time.
apple is most likely going to publish new iphone in the summer, but that ipod touch 2g jailbreak was supposed to possibly work with that… now the jailbreak was released too early, it is most likely that next gen. iphone is protected against that.

there might be because the Iphone Dev Team will have some time to work on things because the official Iphone 3.0 software isnt set o release until the summer. i am hoping they come up with something =)

I have read the same question by written by many ppl in many different form.
They ask if there is not going to be an unlock solution for 2.2.1 with baseband 2.30.03 .
No there will not be. Period
But that doesn’t mean that you are stuck with a locked phone forever. Dev team has managed to jailbreak OS 3.0 as daniel and others mentioned earlier, but they havn’t unlocked it yet (even if they have, they wouldn’t publish it because the official OS 3.0 is not out yet) so if they publish it now, apple can still get a hold of it and close the wholes and maybe delay the launch of OS 3.0 if necessary to block these wholes.
So all you have to do is wait. when Apple officially launch OS 3.0, you should be able to upgrade to OS 3.0 through itunes, then jailbreak it and unlock it (whenever the dev team releases the tools which is expected shortly after the launch of OS 3.0)
Long story short: Patience.
PS: the only obstacle, would be if the dev team has managed to Jailbreak OS 3.0 while maintaining baseband 2.28.00 by upgrading thru custom firmware like what they did with upgrading to 2.2.1 thru pnwage tool 2.2.5(in this case, anyone with a jailbroken 2.2.1 thru custom software done by pwnage tool 2.2.5 and baseband 2.28.00 or anyone with 2.2 with baseband 2.28.00) will be able to Upgrade to OS 3.0 while maintaining their functional 2.28.00 baseband and easily install yellowsn0w. And people who updated thru itunes or had 2.2.1 out of the box, basically, anyone with 2.2.1 with baseband 2.30.03 is stuck and can not unlock.
This is very unlikely since all new iphones 3G will be at least 2.2.1 or 3.0 out of the box with 2.30.03 baseband, so there must be a solution.
I also spent the night looking for this solution, but nothing like going straight to source!

hi, just bought a turbo sim from mooglex.com,it took me a day and a half of ,talking the sim card in and out and reboothing the phone for it to finally pick up my tmobile signal .it stayed on for about 5 hours until i got on the subway in new york and when i came from underground i lost the t mobie signal and di not get it back until 4 hours .The next day i woke up and the signal was lost again and i got a message on the phone saying no service,then no sim card install.hopefuuly moogle x has an updated solution for this problem and whats causing it.If they could fix this problem, u wont have to worry about a softunlock no more,or if u buy a new iphone it wont void your warranty.Creating a perfect rebel or turbo sim card would be the sollution to all iphones version and problems.
i have rebel sim and its still working. its been 2 weeks. sometimes when i go to a room that has no service, i think it loses its service until i have to put my tmobile sim in another phone to pick up the signal again, then put it back into the iphone. but so far i’ve gone about 30miles and it still is giving me service.
im saving you all with 3g 5.8 bootloaders.

Guys, please stay the fuck away of those unlock sim’s.. they are no good, they don’t work and if they work, they work, they work for some hours and then loses the signal.. so you have to keep two phones in you pocket so that you can reset the network strings.. don’t give you money to those guys.. I’ve bought 3 kind of those unlock sim’s, not one is working properly..
just try to unlock thru the carrier, normally it costs you about a 100 bucks.. and your phone is unlocked for ever..

@All, guys there is a solution coming, GeoHot has found an exploit in the boatloader 5.8 and the he and the dev team are gonna work together to find a soution for all other bootloaders (5.9 & 6.2). It’s not gonna take very long anymore.
GeoHot did the unlock of the 5.8 and downgraded the BB 2.30.03 to 2.28.00.
I did try the thing and if you have a boatloader 5.8 it should work, unfortunately I don’t have the bootloader 5.8.

First of all you have to have your phone Jailbroken and you need to have MobileTerminal installed. If that’s done follow the steps below.
Open MobileTerminal (install thru Cydia) and run these commands:
1. Type in: su
2. Type in the password: alpine
3. Type in: chmod 755 BBUpdaterExtreme
4. Type in: launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist
5. Type in: ./BBUpdaterExtreme queryversion
You should find in the output some line looking like this:
Boot Loader Version: ICE2_BOOT_06.02_G2M3S2
So you see, in my case I have bootloader 6.2

No you don’t, you only use Wi-FI when u want to connect with WinSCP to your iPhone for modifying, deleting or uploading files.
ps: don’t forget to install openSSH on your iPhone (thru Cydia) otherwise you won’t be able to connect to your iPhone.

I’ve been meaning to come back and post my success at getting my iPhone 3G downgraded from the 2.30.03 to 2.28.00. While it is true, softwarewise, you cannot go backward once you upgrade, but I have the fortunate opportunity to travel on business to Vietnam often. Last month, to my horror, when I landed in Sai Gon, my SIM card that I use when I am there didn’t work. It only showed that I had an Invalid SIM card. Everything else worked, but not the ability to make a phone call.
Like many of you, I began an earnest search over the internet to find a solution. I mean, I had no phone to do the business that I needed to do when I landed. As it were, I had to purchase another phone temporarily. What I ran across was an article that I am sure many of you may have run into if you are searching as much as I did. There is a man in Ha Noi, Vietnam, as luck would have it. He can overcome this obstacle of going backward on the firmware.
I’ll bypass all that went on unless someone is interested. Anyway, I called him up and he referred me to a man that is in Sai Gon (Ho Chi Minh City) that he showed how he does it. Mind you, the phone literally has to be opened up and the infamous chip on the board has to be removed and reprogrammed and reattached. A bit nervous, but no real choice, I gave my phone to the guy.
Long story short, I now have my 2.28.00 back. And yes, I still have to avoid upgrading again. The cost was $50, but hey, it was well worth it. I wanted to wait until I was back in the US and see how the phone worked for a few weeks. It’s been about 3 and a half now. And not so much as a hiccup. Also, these guys guarantee their work.

Ok guys, I actually forgot a part. The first thing you have to do is find 3 files:
BBUpdaterExtreme
ICE2_02.28.00.fls (needs to be the patched version)
ICE2_02.28.00.eep (needs to be the patched version)
You need to copy those files over to your iPhone into the /var/root folder thru winscp and openSSH, ones this is done you can do the commands:
1. Type in: su
2. Type in the password: alpine
3. !! Make sure you are in /var/root !!
3. Type in: chmod 755 BBUpdaterExtreme
4. Type in: launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist
5. Type in: ./BBUpdaterExtreme queryversion
Ones you now in witch bootloader you can try it. don’t even try if you have bootloader 5.9 or 6.2, it won’t work.
When you are ready I will give you the other commands.. It’s not 3hours of scripting like J(G)ay shouted out loud before.

Don’t desperate, the dev team and GeoHot are most likely already working together on a exploit for 5.9 and 6.2.
I personaly don’t think that apple would have tought about closing the bootloader.
In think each bootloader have his own exploit.
So just be patient..

I guess I’ll be standing in the waiting queue with you guys! let’s hope the DevTeam will find a solution for this and not making us waiting for the 3.0 because it would not come before another months, then more time for the DevTeam to jailbreak/unlock it, plus any new version will have it’s own issues so we have to wait more time.

iphone has 2 main upgradable firmwares os (for example version 2.2.1) and baseband (for example version 2.30.03). these softwares both have own bootloaders, they are small programs which does some signature checks and begins loading the main program like iphone os or baseband fw.
that bootloader is kind of like bios or efi in computers, but also including those security checks to prevent the use of unauthorized firmwares.

try typing dir if bootloader is there or not you will find that out
and if not than type cd that will take you to parent directory and than type dir and if you see bbupdaterextreme than try command

that patch GeoHot published for baseband fw is really _ONLY_ when your phones baseband bootloader is version 5.8 (5.08). There is really no point of trying if this is not the case.
if you use the terminal of iphone os while doing these, i suggest to try out first is osx or linux (or anything similar) what these commands are doing and how to use them… i’m not surprized if there is some “helps” for iphone which does more damage than help – if you run commands with administrator access (root access), it would be good if you know what your are doing.

Hi guys. Ihave been following this thread for some time, well since Saturday, with hopes of unlocking my 3g firmware 2.30.03. A glimpse of hope came when I noticed you could rollback if you were running bootloader 5.8. Problem is i have had my iphone for 3 days and am runnig it via PC and can not figure out how to find out what bootloader I have. If someone could help me I would be sincerely appreciative. I know there is an outline above, but for a novice it really is not that easy to follow. You can call me @ 561-207-1008. I really appreciate the help!
jose mate its very easy… if u have cydia then u have to install mobile terminal and also ifunbox from http://www.i-funbox.com and put the 3 files named BBUpdaterExterme nd other in ver/root folder….. and then open mobile terminal and do this
1. Type in: su

@Jose, if your iphone is bought when iphone 3g came to market – then you are most likely having bootloader ver. 5.8 (5.08)
if you had originally iphone os 2.1 or 2.2 then you definitely have ver 5.9 (5.09)
if you had originally 2.0 then you can have either 5.8 or 5.9
if you had originally 2.2.1 then you will have ver. 6.2 (6.02)
so what we can do?many people (most)have 5.09 or up…

I hate the idea of using a sim unlock, but if its only until the drv team releases the 3.3 crack… does anyone have a reccomendation? I found one by a company moogle for 60 bux, but it works with the new 3.0 beta and firmware 4.21. Any thoughts? thanks guys =)

Also, I looked at the task manager and it shows the percentage the prcessor takes for each program/task. The only one open right now is IE and this web page. And, if I close this tab for the web site, it immediately drops to 10% or less. I have a dual core processor and 2 GB of RAM. But even this message takes a long time to write. I am waiting to see what I write approximately 4 to 5 seconds lag time.

I am here because of the iPhone problem. And I have solution that DID WORK. And I posted it earlier. But the reason why I ask about the web page being slow is because I am trying to tell people about it, but it takes me 5 minutes to write this. I don’t know why the page takes so much time. But the reason I am here is that I was successful in getting my iPhone downgraded back to 2.28.00 from 2.30.03, and I didn’t spend the days and hours people here are. I know how frustrating it is. Hey if im getting permission denied when i enter..cd /Applications/phasebandowngrader && ./phasebandowngrader … what is causing this to happen?
@Falcon: It’s probably a matter of insufficient rights.
Instead of that single line you may want to try these three commands in the terminal window on your iPhone:
type: “cd / Applications/phasebandowngrader/” [ENTER]
type: “chmod 755 phasebandowngrader” [ENTER]
type: “./phasebandowngrader” [ENTER]
Alternatively you can right click the phasebandowngrader file in WinSCP (or whatever SSH app you use) on your PC and select all read, write and execute options for the file which will show the number ’777′ at the bottom of the pop-up window.
After that you can retry the single command line as you did previously.
@sebastian, i suppose that given information about baseband bootloader versions are a bit misleading – i gave those versions earlier in the post 493… sadly that downgrade is still available only for those earliest versions of iphone 3g
like mine was 2.2 (out of box) and it has baseband bootloader ver. 5.9 (sadly)
2.2.1 will have ver 6.2 at least for now what are sold…

the post about that viatnamese guy in those news is a hoax – he cannot unlock iphone 3g like that news tells. first that man was found welding sim unlock cards hard wired to iphone pcb, but propably nowdays just doing this downgrade business to make it possible for yellowsnow. what he explained in that news article is basically same what you were able to do with those old iphones.
but most likely anyone who has experience with electronics and correct tools can downgrade the baseband when software unlock is possible. sadly these tools are really expensive – as i checked before that at least $1900. i was hoping that i would had those at my work but no
but the truth is that downgrade is “easy” when you can desolder the baseband memory chip and put it in some programmer… then just rewrite it with pc and solder it back to iphone… which is not really possible with normal household solderin equipements
@kepu: I agree, unfortunately only very few will benefit from this downgrade solution since for now it can only be applied to bootloader version 5.8 which is quite scares.

Ok this may be were i messed up… once i unziped the file i was instructed to download they were not unziped into a solid folder there were about 6 separate files so i created a folder called PhaseBandowngrader and put all the files in there… then i copyed that folder using WinSCP in to /applications…. Should i just have copied all 6 files individually into the Application folder?
2. What should the permission be set to 777?

First of all: If you’re iPhone is not on bootloader version 5.8 the downgrade procedure won’t work so did you manage to check your bootloader version?
If you’re on bootloader 5.8 you need to copy four individual files from the unzipped download to the /applications/phasebandowngrader/ folder on your iPhone: phasebandowngrader, BBUpdaterExtreme, ICE2_02.28.00.eep and ICE2_02.28.00.fls. You can delete the others through WinSCP although it won’t really do any harm to leave them there.
BTW: the folder name “phasebandowngrader” is case sensitive and has no capitals!
As for the permission: it doesn’t really need to be 777 since 755 is sufficient for executing the downgrader tool. When you check all options except for the write permission for “Group” and “Other” the permission will be set to 755. Setting the permission to 777 by checking all options is more then needed but was easy to explain and works fine.

I got a turbo sim from ebay.in. Opened it up and inserted as per the instructions. Within 5 seconds everything came up and worked fine for the four days. But on the fifth day suddenly it went to no service. I put the sim into anonther phone, made some calls and put it back into iphone. one bar signal comes up, but within five mintues it again goes to no service.
Can somebody help me on this.

@Crab: seems like we’re stuck with bootloader 5.9; I believe there’s a way to downgrade bootloader in iPhone 2g, but I couldn’t find any way to do that on 3G. No all we have to do is to downgrade the bootloader, so we can use the method above to downgrade baseband.
@Bazz: Have you checked the bootloader version? Since I think it’s a problem with many guys to check the bootloader version, here’s a tutorial to do that:
1. Download the zip file above, extract it and copy ‘BBUpdaterExtreme’ to somewhere on your iPhone (ex: /bin)
2. Open MobileTerminal on your iPhone
3. Type ‘su’ and when it prompts for password, type “alpine”
4. Type ‘cd /bin’ or whatever the destination folder’s name is
5. Change BBUpdaterExtreme’s permission to 755 (‘chmod 755 BBUpdaterExtreme’)
6. Type ‘./BBUpdaterExtreme queryversion’
when the process finished, you can find the bootloader version somewhere in the end of the texts.

However, instead of running the automated phasebandowngrader tool you can also try to perform the downgrade manually. Since you installed the files needed already it’s pretty easy to do:
First of all: check through WinSCP if at least the following three files are in the /Applications/phasebandowngrader folder on your iPhone:
- BBUpdaterExtreme,
- ICE2_02.28.00.eep and
- ICE2_02.28.00.fls
If so, open Mobile terminal and type in the following commands (all case sensitive, if you make the slightes typo you can’t proceed!):
1. Type in: su
2. Type in the password: alpine
3. Type in: cd /Applications/phasebandowngrader
3. Type in: chmod 755 BBUpdaterExtreme
4. Type in:
launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist
5. Type in:
./BBUpdaterExtreme update -f ICE2_02.28.00.fls -e ICE2_02.28.00.eep
6. Reboot your iPhone
Check under Settings-General to see your (hopefully) downgraded baseband!
If this still doesn’t work and you’re sure you’re on bootloader 5.08 then obviously something is wrong with the patched baseband files provided by the phasebandowngrader tool. In that case you have to patch the baseband yourself to create new files.

1. Permission denied means you haven’t typed ‘chmod 755 phasebandowngrader’
2. Guys whom have bootloader 5.8: the procedure won’t work if you try it only once! try going through the procedure many times. for me it worked after the third time.

Thanks for that… Doing it manually produces the same result… It seems to go through all of the right steps and BBUpdaterExtreme appears to run the batch succesfully and move/install the new files… the Wifi connection drops (as i think it should and says ‘searching…’)… Lots of OKs and no failures..
And when I go to Settings>General>About (BEFORE) i reboot, you can see that the modem firmware line has disappeared altogether… i.e. at least its affecting the right things…. but then i reboot and have a look and it’s back to 2.30.03 (PS I have tried also going directly to reboot from terminal and still doesn’t work!)
So two possibilities as I see it….
The files don’t work (in which case with all this talk, nobody actually got it to work) or
It’s actually working… but something in the reboot process is resetting to 2.30 before the phone goes live…. Now I am running version 2.21 (iTunes won’t restore 2.2 without error) – so maybe there is something in that?? Any ideas on another route – other than iTunes – to downgrade the software version to 2.2 or 2.1 so i can rule that out?
Any thoughts?
If Phasebandowngrader has actually worked for anyone – pls say so!! at least that would rule out an error in the files!!

But then you say in 531 that when you tried it three times it worked??? That doesn’t make sense – if you have 5.9 no matter how many times you try, it won’t work!!
Can you clarify what you mean? If you actually have BL 5.8 and got it to work on a third attempt, it is more likely you did something differently on the 3rd attempt … do you know what it might have been?

While waiting for someone saying that the phasbandowngrader tool actually did work, you may want to create your own patched baseband files using GeoHot’s baseband patch tool, since you came this far it’s not that difficult…

Thanks, but not trying to downplay what you right, but you’re wrong. As I said, I actually did that and waited until I got back stateside to make sure it worked.
And it did and has. I met the man also. My next question when I have time is that he downgraded it too far. I am on 2.2 when before I was 2.2.1 when I mistakenly upgraded the firmware. That doesn’t seem to be a problem, but I keep getting a notice on Cydia to upgrade the Yellowsnow. After what I went through with the firmware, I am not about to do that when the phone works great – just annoying to see the upgrade option for Yellowsnow, and especially more aggravating when just last week I had 12 upgrades and had to do each one separately because I didn’t want to upgrade yellowsnow too.
Anyway, Kepu, sorry, but this did work. I don’t know what you would need for proof. But all research I did before giving it to him suggested that there was just no way to downgrade it. Except to open the phone up and take the chip off and reprogram it, which he did. He also guarantees his work and the phone.
Last thing, I don’t know how “welding sim unlock cards hard wired to iphone pcb” would show in the about section of my phone the downgraded 2.28.00 firmware. Seems that would still show the 2.30.03. On top of that, wouldn’t that affect my use of SIM cards from other parts of the world? For example, I have SIM cards for China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Viet Nam, Thailand and US. Right now, I am in the US, and have my AT&T SIM card back in it. Wouldn’t that also affect the phone number.
So, no, the guy actually opened the phone, took the chip out and reprogrammed it. I have been reading on this message board of people trying to figure this out, but don’t see it working and a lot of attempts to figure it out. I just wanted to share this news with others.
In fact, I asked the guy why he doesn’t market to the US to get the phones and provide this service. He said it was a shipping issue. Shipping the phone to him and back is expensive. And then there is the taxes that Viet Nam places on import and exporting. I just meant that on my next trip if someone wanted to do the same thing, I could take it with me and bring it back. I’m not worried about the phone because of his guarantee and if he were not a good fellow, it would be easy to get him into trouble with the local government there. And they are very afraid of police.

Well after spending most of today on this… I can defintitely confirm that the GeoHot patch DEFINITELY WORKS – for 5.8 phones.
However, I am almost certain that the .fls file within phasebandowngrader is the unpatched version of the file.
To get it to work, i patched the .fls file in phasebandowngrader with the GeoHot patch tool…
I then copied the 3 files (eep, fls and updaterextreme) to the iphone root directory and ran it manually from there – on the iphone terminal.
It worked (and yellowsn0w now works too).
Perhaps some nice person will fix the phasebandowngrader tool properly and re-release it… in theory it should be easy if it contained the correctly patched file.

I tried quite a few times before I figured what the hell was wrong.
You need to go to download the phasebandowngrader from the link at the top of the page then download the other 3 files that ARE PATCHED!!!!! The link is http://uploading.com/files/B4PIB3YV/baseband-patched.rar.html
Copy all 4 files together into /Applications/phasebandowngrader when creating a folder MAKE SURE THE SPELLING OF phasebandowngrader IS ALL LOWER CASE!!!
Next you need to set permissions… ssh into your phone (I used iphone PC suite) go to the files you put into your phone and right click them (mine was japanese for some reason) but it was the bottom option, click it and tick all boxes except the middle ones on the bottom 2 rows, all ticked on first row, first and third on second and first and third on bottom.
Then follow these instructions… make sure spelling and case are correct:
To run it, open MobileTerminal and type “login”.
The user is “root” and password is “alpine” by default.
Then type: “cd /Applications/phasebandowngrader/” && “./phasebandowngrader”
Follow on screen instructions and reboot
@ Will: My own iPhone has BL5.9 and I couldn’t get it unlocked yet. but a friend of mine had the same problem, he upgraded his iPhone to 2.2.1, with official .ipsw file, and he got in trouble. and I could downgrade his iPhone cuz it has BL5.6; I personally used FW2.2, and after the downgrade process finished, upgraded it with a custom FW 2.2.1. But logically it should work on 2.2.1 too, ’cause this process affects on baseband, and has nothing to do with the FW.

@Fred Go, like you said that Vietnam guy downgraded the baseband firmware the way it is possible always – in US there are lots of eletronics companies which could do this, but they dont (i think it can be illegal).
With proper tools that is possible, but requires skills to remove a very small chip (i suppose it is glued, so you need to heat it to remove). then you need this programmer machine and software to upload old firmware to the memory.
But great that you got your iphone downgraded. As I said about that news is that prior to any yellowsnow the possibility was to use sim unlock cards – he has been actually installing these cards inside phones not actually doing the trick that news article is telling.
Anyway, by using same tools and methods described in that news, he is able to downgrade the program. As i understood he is also been helping iphone scene by supplying the bootloader binaries, so great guy anyway. Most likely that news article is just false due to the author.
@will, krishna, i’m sorry if that was by any means rude post. I know that the method works if you are lucky to have that bootloader ver. 5.8. If everything seems to be running perfectly and you dont get any error messages, then i think the problem is that you are not using those patched firmware binaries. hopefully you’ll find the solution because it is possible…

Bobby try puting your carrier sim in on a phone that will get a signal (a phone from your carrier like a TMobile phone ) then once you get a signal put your turbo sim and Sim card back in your Iphone with AirPlane mode ON…. Switch Airplane mode off and it will search for and you should get it back… hope that helps

@iKaveh, not very likely – i suppose it is signed device dependently and bootrom will check its signature. in first gen iphone there was no signature check for bootloader.

@iKaveh, sadly for now it is impossible for us to downgrade baseband and we will have to wait for some solution. downgrading bootloader is nowdays most likely impossible, because the hasnt been found any possible ways to break this chain of trust (bootrom -> bootloader -> bb firmware) within bootrom.

thijs: Theoretically it won’t hurt your phone, it just doesn’t work if you’re not on 5.8.
However, I wouldn’t recommend to play with these tools for fun since there is always a small risk for an unexpected interuption of the downgrade process due to external circumstances or executing the wrong command by a typo and then you are in trouble.
What’s the point of trying if you know upfront that it won’t work?

listen the info here is slghtly incorrect just because your manufactured date is beyond sept 2008 does not mean you have bootloader 5.9 my iphone has manufactured date of dec 2008 yet my bootloader is still 5.8

Does anyone know if updating itunes to 8.1.1 affect the firmware? After going through what I went through to downgrade it, the last thing I want is to do it again. But I keep getting requests to update itunes itself.

@martin, nothing points that direction that it would work… i checked that “program” it is exactly same as described in top of this page – only an automated tool. even same baseband fw files provided.. so it is not going to work with 5.9 until there will be a separate patched fw for it.

I had successfuly downgrade on bootload 5.08. That’s true statment. For rite now anyone had bootload 5.09 and 6.2 can’t be downgrade it yet. Can we start look at different direction on yellowsn0w software see how is work and modify it somehow. So can work on V2.2.1 MF02.30.03 (BL5.09 or higher)? This software locate at /usr/bin. This just a thought…..

Hi, ive been readin alot on ere the day and havnt a clue how to jailbreak a iphone o check my bootloader. ive noticed a few people hav downgraded to 2.28 from 2.30.03.. for those who cant downgrade ive rang a shop in Newcastle Upon Tyne told them what firmware 2.30.03 i hav and they said they can unlock th iphone.. they charge £40 and stays over night o wait a lil while longer for cheaper. :/ for those who wants to double check this as i jus told them i was on 2.30.03 can ring them on 0191 2568444 yous will no more then me… Hope this helps…

Upgrading to firmware 3.0 will upgrade your baseband to 4.2x. There is no way to bypass the baseband upgrade since as for now firmware 3.0 doesn’t run on any lower basebands.
You can downgrade from 3.0 to 2.2 or 2.2.1 but your baseband wil stay on 4.2x if you do so.

Simon: dont run mobileterminal… download from Cydia and run it.. it working good for me.. before i try to run mobile terminal got message success full, but base band not change after reboot…

so check this problem solved. Like many I upgraded my firmware to 2.2.1 and got stuck with the unlockable 2.30.03 baseband, so I played around with a rebel sim for awhile. However, today I found this app in cydia called “3G Fuzzyband Downgrader” So you can already guess what it does. You install this app(its free), exit cydia find the app on your iphone run it. Touch downgrade its takes like three min. once its done check your baseband. If you have 2.30. its 2.28 which means if you have yellowsn0w already on your phone ITS UNOLOCKED AGAIN Fucking A!!! Please try its fucking simple as shit. I love the guy who made it (no homo) Do it Now

Nope it says will not support 5.9 only 5.8 so we are still stuck…. that sucks keep us updated tho
Same as me, BL 5.9 not supported. maybe have to wait till jun or julai bcoz heard expert try their best to unlock with BL 5.9. Hopefully they can make it.

Hi Gang. I bought a new 16gig iPhone 3G from Dubai airport in February and like a nob I updated and locked it and up until now have had a very expensive paperweight while waiting for the Dev-Team to hopefully crack baseband 2.30.03. Ive tried every stupid little potential hack i could find so far until i just bought a Gevey 3G Sim Card off eBay for $7 aus and after restarting 3 times I have a totally unlocked iphone. My phone is Pawned and Im using a pre-paid OPTUS simcard with it.
Anyone know where can i get Gevey 3G Sim Card? i am from malaysia. Can someone offer me?

It now supports up to 5.9 bootloader, so if your on that then you can instantly downgrade your iphone baseband back to 2.28 using this app

I live in Australia and I got a Gevey Sim card off Ebay from Hong Kong. It only cost me (all up) about $15 (aus) with postage and got it within 5 days. If you cant find it on Ebay let me know and i will hunt the URL for the one i got.

Hey well I brought my phone when I was stationed in Germany(4 months ago so like Feb 2009) and was tied to a contract with T-Mobile. when I got enough leave time I came back stateside because I wanted to use AT&T. My phone was running on a 2.2fw with 2.28bb on a 5.9bl. I updated when 2.2.1 came out, but needed it unlocked to use AT&T, my phone was already jailbreaken so I found 3G Fuzzyband Downgrader after awhile and it worked for me. Now this may be because of where I brought it, but I def have a 5.9bl.
Hey and as for your phone saying “no sim” you gotta play with it. If it says “searching” then “no sim” and then “no service” (order not important) and you also may get exactly 1 bar of signal then it can work. Try respringing it until it works and play with different toggles and see what kind of results you get. Oh and make sure your 3G is off. But still play with your Airplane mode, and your Edge, and even go to carriers and try to search for it. Its a complete hassle but you will get a hang to what kind of bullshit steps you gotta go thru to get it to work, until dev team unlocks 3.0
Apple is going to annouce officialy the releasing date of new 3.0 OS software on june 8 or june 12…..but the question is what will be the releasing date and how long do we have to wait after that for the dev team’s unlocking software…..is that going to be another yellowsnow or something else this time……i can’t wait to unlock my iphone……its been freaking 4 months…….any advise will be helpful…thanks in advance

Dude forget about 2.2.1, there is no jailbreak for it and who cares. I don’t know what planet your on but 3.0 is out TODAY like everywhere. Dev Team has confirmed a jailbreak, and we’re still waiting for it also out today time still TBD, and a unlock called “ultrasn0w” coming out like Friday. So your already fucked so you might as well update to 3.0 and wait for that jailbreak and unlock

If you have 2.2fw assuming you also have a 2.28 baseband you can just download yellowsn0w from cydia and ur good to go, but why wouldnt upgrade to 3.0 it makes your iphone really an iphone

To Falcon. Yes u can unlock but you have to jailbreak first, then install terminal and then download yellowsn0w to unlock. But you can unlock with the 3.0 firmware now, suing ultrasn0w. For a complete guide please go to iClarified.com

@Falcon: If you’re on baseband 2.30 you have to upgrade to firmware 3.0 in order to unlock with UltraSnow. Baseband 2.30 cannot be unlocked.
Be very careful though: make sure you upgrade to OS 3.0 and not to OS 3.1 since Apple closed the UltraSnow injection hole in that version so you cannot unlock 3.1 nor downgrade the baseband!!!!
