109 CommentsBelow are instructions on how to unlock your iPhone 3G using Yellow Sn0w. Unlocking your iPhone 3G will make it possible for you to use any cellphone carrier.
Before you go any further, make sure to READ EVERY SINGLE WORD OF THIS TUTORIAL. If you think you’re too cool for school, then go directly to the instructions but please, do not complain if you mess up your iPhone during the process, which is very unlikely to happen anyways…
First things first. In order to be able for you to use Yellow Sn0w to unlock your iPhone 3G, you have to be on a jailbroken iPhone that runs the latest firmware 2.2 with the latest baseband 02.28.00. To find out what firmware you’re on, go to Settings > General > About and look for “Modem Firmware”. It should say 02.28.00.
If you have not jailbroken your iPhone yet, you have to now in order to unlock. To jailbreak your iPhone, follow the QuickPwn 2.2 guide that I wrote a few weeks ago.
If you have already jailbroken your iPhone using PwnageTool to preserve your baseband, sorry but you have to restore and rejailbreak again in order to have the latest 02.28.00 baseband.
If you have updated to the latest firmware 2.2 with its latest 02.28.00 baseband, then you’re good to go.
So from now on, I assume that you are on a clean firmware 2.2 with firmware 02.28.00 and that your iPhone is jailbroken.
1. Go to Cydia and install this new source: http://apt9.yellowsn0w.com/ (note that snow is spelled with a zero, not an “o”). To install a new source in Cydia, go to Manage > Sources > Edit > Add, then type in the source http://apt9.yellowsn0w.com/ and tap “Add Source”.
2. Once the source has been added, tap “Return To Cydia”, then tap “Done”.
3. Now tap “apt9.yellowsn0w.com from the list of sources “Entered By Users”.
4. Select Yellow Sn0w, then tap install nad confirm.
5. Once the installation had been successfully completed, return to Cydia.
6. Hard reset your iPhone. To do this, hold the home and power buttons simultaneously for a few seconds until the phone shuts off by itself (ignore the “slide to power off” message)
7. Insert whatever SIM card you want! Wait a few seconds and you should be good.
8. Done!
See, that wasn’t too hard at all. Users that are already familiar with Cydia and sources shouldn’t have any problem at all. But first time jailbreakers might be a little lost, which is why I detailed this tutorial a lot.
Now there are a few known issues with Yellow Sn0w and I highly recommend you either read my previous post about it, or go directly to the Dev Team’s blog.
Troubleshooting:
1) If you are on tmobile USA you should disable 3G in Settings or sbsettings.
2) YellowSn0w does not work with a SIM PIN. You must disable your SIM card pin lock.
At any rate, I would really appreciate it if you could digg this post, then write a comment, then go to the Dev Team’s blog to thank them for their great work.
it was earlier mentioned that we should be on 2.1FW and baseband no later than 2.11.07 Does that mean we can now upgrade our jailbroken phone first to 2.2FW, then jailbreak again and then do the unlock?

Yes, it’s no longer true. I haven’t updated the tutorial on QuickPwn so don’t worry about that. Update to the latest firmware and baseband, jailbreak,and unlock.

After y downloaded the yellowsn0w from cydia today everything went perfect….but later today as i was still using my att legal sim card my calls started to drop and from time to time my edge or even 3g sign disapear!! my iphone never did that so i guess it has to do with the yellowsn0w software..anybody having the same problem??

I followed these steps for my 3g 2.2 / 2.28.00 and all i get are low signal bars, no carrier name. and when I try yo make a call, everyone fails….

Hey Johan. You csn still use your turbosim with 2.2. Just go to you tube and search using these words “iglitch iphone 3g 2.2″. All you have to do is the following I tried it my self:
1) take out your sim card.
2) turn-off your iphone with the sim card out.
3) turn-on your iphone and don’t insert your sim+turbosim yet.
4) press the phone icon and go to the diapad, then type 611 (customer service if you are using T-mobile). Don’t dial the number just type it and make it ready for the next step.
5) insert thge sim card and quickly press dial, if the call failed keep dialing don’t stop until your hear the t-mobile voic menu. Don’t close the call yet and add another call like (check minutes, balance whatever). I suggest you edn the call after 1 min.
6) your done. You will notice the signal is going stronger after 2-3 min later. If you fail the first time, do get upset and do it again.
Remeber to be quick in dialing cause basically the phone will start getting the signal in the first few second afer restart the iphone. If you didn’t make a call in the first few second you have to start from the begining. (Sory for my bad english as it is not my first language).
One more thing I tried the yellowsnow to unlock my iphone 3g 2.2; however, the signal disappears whenever I try to make calls. After several trials, the yellowsnow doesn’t work anymore with my iphone I don’t get any signal like before. So I decide to go back and use my old gevey turbosim. It is basically similar to the yellowsnow hacking method because you have to repeat the unlocking porcedures everytime you restart your iphone. I’m getting a new turbosim from gevey soon and I don’t have to repeat that I glitch trick every time I restart my iphone.

I even tried to replace the plist file following the tutorial posted on HackThatiPhone.com and it’s still not working.
Worst of all, I upgraded the BaseBand so now my hardware hack doesn’t work anymore.
Any ideas? is there a way I can downgrade my baseBand?

However, I personally never update. I always restore and start from scratch. It takes a little longer as I always have to set up my iPhone all over again every time but at least, it’s a clean, fresh firmware. I think it’s a better solution but some other people might disagree with me.

@James – go to iTunes and hit restore. It will download the latest firmware and install it. After the installation, iTunes will ask you of you want to set up your new clean iPhone from backup of from scratch. DO NOT set up from backup (that would bring back all the crap and the 500MB). Choose to set up as a new phone. It will be a clean shiny 2.2
Don’t know what you’re talking about about installing apps from Cydia or iTunes… No need to install any apps (except yellowsn0w from Cydia if you want to unlock).

Just a tip to the users that I have completed all the steps but it still does not work. I had this problem too but I solved it when I understood that rebooting=press the power button + menu button until the iphone is forced to stop (about 15sec) –> don’t turn it off by pressing the power button and sliding the power button on your screen.

I installed the new update of yellowsnow today. It fixes the outgoing calls problems that I had with previous release. I’m on T-mobile USA and It seems to be stable in the last 2 hours. The signal is not strong though and I lost the signal two tie. I had then to turned on the flight mode to regain the signal.
ok this is what i did and it works great: i had yellowsn0w installed already , so i uninstalled it. rebooted the phone, then i installed it again, afterwards i hard reset the phone, i held the power and home key until the phone reset, then before i turned the phone back on, i switched sims(tmobile usa), then i powered on the phone, and when it loaded( which took alittle while so be patient) it said iphone is activated and it has worked great since, my texting and calls are perfect so far, thanks alot dev team!!! you guys are amazing!!!
24hours after installing yellowsnow. Everything works fine with me on T-mobile USA after installing the latest update from Cydia today. Check for new releases of yellowsnow and make sure you have the latest version.

Yes there was an update yesterday. When you open Cydia, it will tell if there is any update. As I said earlier, I don’t have any problems with my iphone after the new update.

In your message 27 above, you mentioned to install to set up as a new phone. In your tutorial (from link), it says to install from backup, then it will be able to get back all the notes, settings etc.
Ok, here is my question, if I do it as a clean install, how do I get back all my info from the calendar, notes, apps installed from itunes etc… will performing the sync do it or do I need to do something else. I cannot lose the information from my calendar, notes etc. that was in the phone. for the apps from itunes, i guess i can install it again?

@James – setting up as a new phone will delete your notes for sure and all your settings (preferences) such as ringtones, light level, and all that stuff.
However, when you’re done and sync your iPhone, it will sync all the most important info such as calendar and email (assuming you sync this with your computer). Obviously, all the music will also be synced from iTunes. It’s pretty much like you’re starting from scratch but I personally dont think it’s a big deal, and it’s totally worth it too.

I installed yellowsn0w, mine is showing the network but its still has no bars…my modem firmware is still at 01.48.02, but i am on version 2.2 which im guessing may be the problem.. I was told not to update the modem firmware because it would brick my phone?
Are there any garantees that if I restore through itunes 2.2 and recieve the upgraded modem firmware that my phone will be ok… or is there any other way around this, seeing as how I do have the tmobile network, just no signal? or should I restore through quickpawn?

I have installed yellowsn0w 0.9.5 on two iphone 3g 16 gig. One works perfect, the other has a problem with the mic during calls. I can hear the other person, but he can not hear me. Using external earplugs with mic or switching simcards doesn’t help. Mic works when doing a testcall with skype or fring, so it must be a software problem.

I just moved to italy with an AT&T iPhone 3g. Telecom italia mobile told me that in addition to unlocking I would also need to have “the Italian software installed”. Any idea what this would entail? Never heard of an “Italian software”. I think it’s BS. Just follow the jailbreak+unlocking steps, insert your new SIM and you should be fine.

@schmichael Once you’ve updated and jailbroken on 2.2, simply install yellowsn0w from Cydia. It will not make any modification to your baseband (it is just an application = software).
I’ve had my iphone for two weeks now and it had already been jailbroke and unlocked. It was behaving great until two days ago when it started displaying NO SIM. I found this site and followed your tutorial to rectify the problem. A pattern has emerged where once I’ve jailbroke and unlocked, it seems to work with regards to the sim being detected, but after about an hour maximum it starts throwing up the NO SIM message again.
Is this normal and is it a case of constantly going through this process to be able to use the phone or am I missing something?
I have 2.2 firmware and 2.28 baseband. The phone is an American import and I’m using an O2 sim.
Any suggestions would be great.

I am hoping that someone can help me please. I brought this phone off a friend a couple of weeks ago and it was already updated to firmware 2.2 but the modem firmware is 04.05.04_G and i have a UK T Mobile contract. I have spent days trying all sorts of tutorials that are on the internet and can jailbreak the phone and reset the firmware back to earlier versions and all sorts unlock the phone without any success. The modem firmware just will not come up with the 2.28 baseband and stays on 04.05.04_G no matter what i have tried to do. Is there anyone who knows what i can do to sort this out please as i really need to unlock this phone to use it otherwise its useless to me

The only reason to unlock a phone is so that you can use it on any network for example T-mobile. In the US AT&T is the only carrier for the iphone. Unless of course you unlock it like I did. I now can use T-mobile with my phone.
Athough be careful when unlocking the phone because the newest update (2.2.1) does not support the unlock everyone is talking about i.e. yellowsn0w. This update came out just a few days ago and it looks like it might PERMANENTLY lock your phone to AT&T so watch out.

Ya the gps still works but you cant download the maps from google unless you have a wifi connection so really the gps only works if you have the 3g

I am having difficulty with the unlocking process because I had to completely wipe my 3g. I lost the initial AT&T sim card that came with the phone and now itunes won’t let me install anything because it says that their is no sim card or the sim card is not supported. Hy lead, try to remove the sim card and connect the iPhone to iTunes. You can finish the identification process! You can also try to put in aero mode the iphone and synchronize iTunes. Bye!

I have done in my brother’s iPhone 3G and it went all right. But now I want to do it in another iPhone 3G, with firmware 2.1 – I know that I should not upgrade it to 2.2.1 firmware because of the baseband upgrade, but my question is: Do I have someway to upgrade to the 2.2 firmware old baseband, to unlock it – How should I do this? where I can get the 2.2 firmware to upgrade and how I make to make sure that iPhone upgrades to 2.2 only, not 2.2.1 (I’m not interested in the 2.2.1 upgrade). Lead Zer0, if you use pwnage tool or quick pwn to jailbreak, even prior to activating, they will automatically “hacktivate” it for you. This is equivalent to activation the regular way and you shouldn’t loose any of your functions! Worked for me, hope the same for you!

you cant really unlock the iphone with the newest firmware i.e. 2.2.1. I did the same thing and to unlock it i had to use a i-smartphone sim to unlock it. You can find them on ebay for about 15 dollars. Useing a sim adapter is the only way to unlock the newest firmware at this point in time.

Hey, I’ve had my iphone 3g (version 2.2, firmware 02.28.00) since christmas and still haven’t got it unlocked…so annoying! i jailbroke my phone using quickpwn and installed yellowsn0w 0.9.6 through cydia but unfortunately this did not unlock my phone for some reason (even after trying to reboot, toogleairplane mode on and off etc)…so i then i decided to maybe re-install yellowsn0w and try again. ive now installed yellowsn0w 0.9.8 but iphone is still not picking up coverage (still displaying no service!) this is annoying me so much and i really want to get my iphone up and running…any ideas of what i could do to fix this? any help would be greatful.

hey, i noticed on this post that it says that you must disbale your PIN Lock.
ive been searching for days because my iPhone 3G has a PIN lock on it. and asks me to enter the PUK Code everytime i turn it on, and i cant update my iPhone until this is is removed because i learned the hard way with my 1st gen. iPhone cause i was using it because my iPhone 3G had problems. :/
so do you know how to remove the PIN Lock PUK code thing?

HI PLZZZ I NEEED HELPPP!!! my iphone was unlocked using turbosim in US n sent it to me(India) it worked superb witout jailbreaking until I accidentally upgrade my iPhone 3G with iTunes to 2.2.1. The baseband is now 2.30.
I downgraded it back to 2.2 but the baseband is still the same. Now, When I use quickpwn to jailbreak I got no carrier signal..

I’ve researched quite a bit and it seems that unfortunately you cannot downgrade from baseband 2.30.03 to 2.28.0, meaning that if you have iphone on 2.30.03, the only way of unlocking it will be to use a rebel/turbo sim card.
Also beware of using rebel sim cards, have one myself, works every now and again, have to constantly take sim in/out. Only good for temporary solution!

I recently unlocked my iphone 3g following all steps in the tutorial posted here. Everything is working fine, my signal and internet all working perfectly on T-mobile network, I have not lost signal since. Now each time I connect to iTune I am ask to upgrade to 2.2.1 firmware, I want to upgrade from 2.2 firmware to 2.2.1 though. But I am not sure what will happen to my phone. Can I upgrade and I will still have my phone unlocked and be working properly? reply please…
Okay here gos I was able to jailbrake my 3G iphone and download app ..kool
BUT by modem firmware is 02.11.07 and yellowsn0w will not work with this ver.
I now know that I have to upgrade to the firmware that yellowsn0w like which is 2.2 I think .. is this the 500 MB file .. or is there something new out there ?
please reply and how to do this & were to find the file … I did use yellowsn0w but it did not work to unlock the phone with the modem fir. 02.11.07 (baseband) ( T-Mobile )

okay I found this again how do I upgrade to this firmware : my 02.11.07 baseband
First things first. In order to be able for you to use Yellow Sn0w to unlock your iPhone 3G, you have to be on a jailbroken iPhone that runs the latest firmware 2.2 with the latest baseband 02.28.00. To find out what firmware you’re on, go to Settings > General > About and look for “Modem Firmware”. It should say 02.28.00.

So i check my baseband to see that it says 2.30.03, how do i get it back to 2.28.00

i had same problem.. but dev team r im not sure who did it.. but they have come up wit a way to downgrade BB from 2.30 to 2.28.. but like always there is a catch.. your Bootloader MUST be 5.8 n no higher.. check out the link below its got de tutorial for checking bootloader n then downgrading.. and this is possible only if ur phone is jailbroken.. mine was n also was 5.8. and guess wat my phone is now working fine. I use my phone in india.. n its pretty gud..

Can anyone please help me? I have successfully jailbroke my IPHONE with blackrain R23 in INDIA. I am current user of carrier VODAFONE GSM. Hence I inserted the same SIM in my unlocked IPHONE. Still it is not giving me network signals.
It would be very helpful if someone guide me in this regard.
