“Cannot connect to iTunes Store” fix

Posted by Sebastien on November 10, 2008 27 Comments

For a while I had been unable to download applications from the App Store directly from my iPhone. For some reason, every time I tried, I would get an error message saying “Cannot connect to iTunes Store”. What was strange is that this problem came out of nowhere.

I know that jailbreaking and playing inside the iPhone’s files all the time is the cause of the problem but I don’t really know how it started. What was really strange about this issue is that I was able to download apps from the App Store when I was not in my house. While at home, I couldn’t download over wifi or 3G. I went to LA this weekend and stayed at a hotel and I realized I was able to download apps over wifi AND 3G.

Even though I don’t understand the problem, I do have a fix for it. Here is how it goes:

  • SSH into your iPhone or use iPhoneBrowser
  • Navigate to /private/var/mobile/Library/Caches/com.apple.mobile.installation.plist
  • Now backup this file to your computer, just in case
  • Once it’s backed up, delete the file from your iPhone
  • Reboot your iPhone
  • Done!

After rebooting the phone, there was the little badge on the App Store icon telling me that I had 4 apps to update. I updated them and I am now able to download apps from the App Store directly from the iPhone again.

No more “Cannot connect to the iTunes Store”!

Does this fix affect the ability to upload cracked apps to itunes from the iphone? I know the mobile install patch has something to do with that…

Hi, this didnt work for me on a uk 3g JB T-Mobile. I’ve tried rebooting through Boosprefs and Normal power off/on. The file reappears on reboot and I can only connect through App store, Itunes and actually also Wunderradio through wifi.
Any ideas what I can additionally try?
    Thanks!

Hmm.. I just reinstalled completely from scratch with pwnage to 2.2.1, without doing a restore, and the first thing I did was trying to get to the app store which still didn’t work… :(
This was before downloading or entering anything anywhere so i guess it would be a t-mobile issue?
Before reinstalling Ive tried every possible combination of itunes syncing then restarting etc to no avail whatsover.
    Any hints are greatly appreciated.

Adding to the above, when I insert the (original) o2 sim it works perfectly (also over Cellular) - this is more than an app store update issue, it seems to be a block of t-mobile ip addresses? Sounds like a terribly good idea by the way.. :(
    Again, any hints greatly appreciated.

I’m guessing I have to jailbreak my iPhone and I really don’t want to jail break it. Is this the only way to fix it? It’s driving me INSANE!

Where do type in that line to navigate to? (/private/var/mobile/Library/Caches/com.apple.mobile.installation.plist)
I don’t understand wgere I am supposed to type that into to in order to delete it. (sorry I am kind of new to this stuff)

  • Sebastien (author) said:

    Jonathon,

You don’t have to type this in. It’s a path you have to access. It’s the same kind of path you have on your computer to access your pictures for example (ie C/My Documents/My Pictures). See what I’m saying?

You have to access the com.apple.mobile.installation.plist in your iPhone either by using SSH or iPhoneBrowser ( http://www.iphonedownloadblog.com/2008/09/28/iphonebrowser/ )

    Hope that helps
