Unlock your iPhone 2G with QuickPwn

After posting the QuickPwn 2.1 tutorial yesterday, I got many emails from people asking me if the method worked for unlocking iPhones. The answer is yes! It does work to unlock the iPhone. It only works with the 1st Generation iPhone though. So if you have an iPhone 3G, it’s not gonna work.

In the guide I posted yesterday, I show you how to jailbreak an iPhone (no matter what iPhone you have) but many people that are not really tech savvy asked me for a tutorial on how to unlock the iPhone 2G. So here we go…

Before starting, do not hold me responsible if something goes wrong. If you follow these instructions carefully, chances are you won’t have any problem. So read everything!

Now before we start the process, you need to make sure you have downloaded and installed iTunes 8 and backed up your iPhone. And there are a few files you need to download too. Create a folder on your desktop and save all these files in there:

  1. Connect your iPhone to your PC and open iTunes. Hold the Shift key and click “Restore” at the same time. You could click “Update” but that would eat up your disk space for nothing. See my previous post about that. So, when you click SHIFT + RESTORE, a window will pop up asking you to choose your firmware. Select the firmware you downloaded before Step 1. iTunes will then restore your iPhone to 2.1, which may take a while.
  2. Once iTunes has restored your iPhone to 2.1, launch QuickPwn. Make sure your iPhone is connected to your PC and click the blue arrow.
  3. Click the BROWSE button to locate your iPhone firmware you downloaded before Step 1. Select the firmware. QuickPwn will automatically check and make sure the ipsw (firmware) is correct. Click the blue arrow to go to the next step.
  4. Now select what you want to do. You HAVE TO install Cydia. Using custom logos and installing Installer is pretty useless at the time. Also make sure you check the “Unlock Phone” checkbox. Click the blue arrow to continue.
  5. You will then be asked to choose your BootLoader files you downloaded before step 1. Select them and click the blue arrow to continue.
  6. QuickPwn will ask you to confirm that your iPhone is connected to your computer. Make sure it is and click the blue arrow to continue.
  7. QuickPwn will now put your iPhone into recovery mode. Once it is in recovery mode you will be asked to: a) Hold the Home button for 5 seconds, b) Hold the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds, c) Release the Power button and continuing holding the Home button until your iPhone is in DFU mode. QuickPwn gives you very detailed instructions to make it even easier for you!
  8. Once QuickPwn detects your iPhone in DFU mode, it will start the pwning process.
  9. Once pwned, QuickPwn will informa you that you successfully completed the pwnage process. Your iPhone will then proceed to run BootNeuter, which may take a few minutes, so be patient! Once done, your iPhone will reboot.
  10. Done!

How easy was that?

I closed the comments on this post but if you have any question about unlocking your iPhone 2G, please ask in the forum.

  1. i am completely *not* a techie – that was one of the reasons why i got a developer friend of mine to unlock my first gen iphone for me last year. someone told me that it was just a simple upgrade to 2.1 – no problems. Big mistake because it completely locked my phone (iphone isn’t available to my mobile company in my country yet). i am so thankful i found this quick, easy tutorial that didn’t involve upgrading and downgrading my phone (whatever that means) – easiest tutorial ever and now i have a swanky “new” iphone 2.1 to play with 🙂 thank you so much! you made it so easy

  2. omg….thanx alot i’ve been trying for days to jailbreak my iphone….
    this method really rulezZZZZZ…..
    XD
    thnx again…

  3. thanks a lot man…the whole process was easy..although it did take a lil too much time…anywayz followed it step by step..n now i have a new 2.1 firmware on my iphone…thanks again!
    u rock!

  4. If you could help me i would be grateful. I have a bought 2g iphone from a friend and it is not acivated and it doesnt have an att sim card. I am trying to do this process but after i click browse to look for the fw, it will just stay there because itunes refuses to recognize my phone because it does not have a valid sim card, the only way is to put it in dfu mode, but then i have to restore again which brings me back to the beginning. This phone is not activated and after it gets the fw, nothing happens. Please reply, and i might even donate, if you use paypal. Send me a message please.

  5. Michael – Make sure there is a sim card in your phone (t-mobile or sprint, or even at&t, whatever you sim card is) and make sure to perform Step 4 of this guide correctly. You need to have the simcard in the phone and check the “Unlock phone”. This will unlock AND activate your phone. After that, iTunes will be able to recognize it. Hope that helps

  6. Ok, i decided to unlock using 2.0.2, it worked but now, it doesn’t say tmobile at the top and i cant call out or recieve calls, itunes recognizes my number and everything works great, except the actual calling and texting, can somebody help.

  7. Actually now it says no service, but i have service on my tmobile sim, why wont it let me call

  8. ok i followed all of the steps correctly and used the quickpwn said it successfully unlcoked my phone. i have a iphone 2g with the 2.1 software. well i had my att sim card in it but when ever i try to put my tmobile sim it says different sim detected please connect to itunes. i know its jailbroken cause the phone is good with out a sim. can someone please tell me how to fix it or exit this screen where it says ” slide for emergency”. and i think its unlocked cause it says tmobile in the courner but its just stuck on this screen. please help!!

  9. I have 2G, with v2.1…

I was able to get the program to work yesterday, but when i changed sim cards, the phone wanted me to connect to itunes. i have a lagit iphone plan/sim card, and another line that does not have iphone on it. I want to use service with that other line, but the sim doesn’t work. should i redo process with that other sim card in the phone? or should i downgrade software? I’m running Itunes 8

  10. i did the same thing as josh and i dont knw what to do either. im going to try to restore my iphone to the factory setting and just try the whole process over again. ill let you know if it works

  11. ok it my tmobile sim still doesnt work. its weird cause i can make a phone call if i dial the numbers where it lets you make a emergency call..somebody please help me

  12. @Javier and @Josh – If you guys are gonna use a different SIM card, you have to pawn your iPhone with this SIM card in it. You can’t just swap SIM cards and expect it to work.

  13. @sebastien – i tryed pawning it with my tmobile sim inside of the phone and it still says different sim connected please connect to itunes. then that dumb ass slide for emergency thingy. and it also says tmobile in the top right corner. any solutions anybody?

  14. I’m experiencing the same challenge. I have tried multiple SIM cards – same result. I have run the Quickpwn application countless times. I have checked ONLY Unlock – no luck. I have downlaoded Bootneuter via Cydia. The unlock tab says on, so I changed it back to off, flashed it, then changed it back again, flashed again. Still same problem. VERY Frusterating.

  15. I ran 2.1 quickpwn add bootneuter with my att sim in and now it shows ATT at the top left but it shows for me to connect to iTunes, I go to iTunes and it wants me to give all my personal account info and choose a plan..do I do this or what have I done wrong!?? Please help!!

  16. Reset phone nothing any different! =( Using originall iphone…OMFG I just got a call but I didn’t answer it (on the iphone I am talking about not my 3G) and then it went back saying different sim deteced please connect to itunes

  17. THank you soooo much!!! I have been looking for a website that would give me great instructions. YOur AWESOME!!!!!! Thanks

  18. You need to restore your iPhone to factory first before you use QuickPwn.

Insert the sim from the provider you WISH to use first.

Clear down the folder where your iTunes restore files are Should be “C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates” (where %username% is your PC’s profile name)

Open iTunes with the iPhone connected and hold down the ‘home’ button. iTunes should recognise an iPone is connecting in ‘restore mode’. iTunes will now download and install the latest 2.1 firmware. Let it complete this but when it is finished do nothing more than close iTunes. DO NOT ACTIVATE THE PHONE just close iTunes.

Now run QuickPwn select the newly downloaded firmware that iTunes just installed from the folder above, click on and tick all the required boxes, choose the boot file paths and click on, go through all the steps and once the phone reboots you will be active with no prompt to activate! 🙂 Happy Dayzz 🙂

The crutial part is the iPhone firmware must never have been activated via iTunes in the first place otherwise it will always fail when you change SIM cards.

    Hope this helps. 🙂

  20. Wow

I was so frustrated because my 2g iphone got locked on the emergency screen after I restored it to fw 2.1 from fw 2.0.1 on itunes 7.7. I tried everything and looked everywhere. After following your instructions, I got fw 2.0.2 unlocked and jailbroken, fresh new iphone.

THANKS SO MUCH for your help!!!!

  21. Cool! I was going to send my Iphone2G back home to the Philippines. I had the same problem with not being able to recognize the SIM but after following instructions… worked good!

    Thanks people!!!

  22. Ramps After following your instructions, I got fw 2.0.2 unlocked
thanks very much for you help .

  23. I have tried everything in these posts and NO LUCK at all. Different SIM Detected!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am sooooooo frustrated with my iphone 2g 2.1 firmware. Cannot unlock it. Nothing works. I cannot get to any apps or Cydia because it has no service.
    HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. hi. i tried to start the quickpawn but it says “The version of Quickpawn can only jailbreak devices with versions>=2.0”. What can i do? Plz help me!!!

  25. Hi, I just bought a refurbished iphone 2G. I have an ATT SIM card with voice only. Do I need to put this in iphone before starting this unlock process?

  26. I got a brand new 2G phone that was activated with ATT but never jailbroken or unlocked. I was already at 2.1 firmware therefore I skipped the first part of restoring the phone using itunes and straight went to quickpwn 2.1.1 to unlock and jailbreak the phone. I had my tmobile sim installed in the phone during the process however after the entire process was completed successfully I got different sim detected message. I googled for this problem and it seems lot of people have similar issues but no solutions.
I am trying the method suggested by Ramps but there is no iphone directory in my computer to clear also when I press home button it does not go to restore mode. Am I doing something wrong here … What if I do shift restore and select the firmware will it be same as pressing home button in itune. Please suggest I am going crazy over here 🙁

    Thanks

  27. Avnish,

Start over by restoring your iPhone in iTunes. You probably did something wrong during the DFU mode process. Go to YouTube and search for DFU mode and learn how to do it properly.

    Sebastien

  28. Ramps and Sebastien,
Thank you both for the support. Finally, I was able to unlock the phone to Tmobile sim card. I think the only mistake I was making for all the methods I was trying that for while restoring the phone to factory defaults I was using the original sim card and changed it to tmobile just before the quickpwn. Please follow the procedure exactly as Ramps mentions. Only thing I would like to add is to enter DFU mode, power off the phone and start the itunes on pc. Hold the home button on phone and connect it to pc using usb cable. Keep holding the home button till you get a pop up window in itunes to restore the phone. After that it will download the file to your pc under the directory mentioned by Ramps. I will take a while because it is 230 MB file. After that it is smooth sailing …
Thanks a lot guys .. you are awesome …..

  29. Hi Avnish,

I am glad you were able to finally unlock your phone. As you mentioned, it is imperative to follow the process exactly. There is no room for freestyling… Most people who have problems with unlocking their iPhones following this method is because they actually didn’t follow it correctly.

  30. I have been using my 2g unlocked iphone for two weeks and now all of a suddent he phone does not work. I can do everything but make a phone call. The GREEN pad is blank and will not work. It jumps back to the home screen after a few seconds and will not let me make a call or receive a call????

  31. Hello All,

Im planning to buy an iPhone 2G from eBay or craiglist. I dont have any idea if its unlocked/jailbroken or activated until i actually purchase and get it. What do you recommend i do if its already activated?
    Thank you all

  32. Hello Siawash,

I would restore the iphone in iTunes and jailbreak (and maybe unlock if that’s what you want) using this method.

By restoring the iPhone (which means deleting everything and resinstalling a clean firmware), you will start from a brand new and clean iPhone.

    Sebastien

  33. i love u but i am not gay but if i had a condom i would do u u the bum …
thanks for helping me unlock my phone it took me aleast 5 days to find this website as i needed to unlock my iphone .. i can finally sleep
thanks alot it was so easy to do
    i Love u

  34. I already ran the Iphone 2G 2.1 firmware.
But everytime I dock my Iphone ITunes persists w/ the “Let’s get started” window by activating w/ AT&T. If I hit cancel, it’ll tell me that it’s now safe to disconnet the phone.

How do I run the Quick Pwn
The QuickPwn file name is “iPhone1,1_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw”
So when I try to run it, computer doesn’t know what to run it with or what kind of file it is.

  35. Ramps, I started Itunes w/ the phone connected.
When I hold the “Home” button (the main button on the Iphone right?) nothing happens. Iphone just goes back to sleep like I’m not even touching it. Am I doing this right?

  36. Hi I just found your site. You guys insist to have the sim in it. I did 2 unlock/jailbrea and it works no problem without sim in it.

But I have another problem. Anytime I connect the phone to pc it clears all the apps I installed from app store. Any fix for that. Allso I did not install cydia. I tought to complicated for me.

  37. I just jailbroke my iphone 2G, my sim card was in there the whole time, but it says, “different sim card detected, connect to iTunes”, when I connect to iTunes it says, sim card not supported, it seems a lot of people have the same problem, but no solutions, CAN ANYONE HELP, PLEASE????????

  38. probably, you missed something in the process. Happened to me to. Did ypu restore it first?

  39. I don’t know how to restore now because when I turn the Iphone on, screen says to connect to ITunes.
And when I connect to PC, ITunes only wants to Activate which I always cancel then it tells me that it’s now safe to remove the device.

    What now?

  40. Hey guys..
I was unlocking a previously activated phone, followed advice from Avnish + Rammps to restore + post to unlock, worked like a charm. Thank a LOT.

  41. Hi Sebastin,

I am already existing at&t customer with no contract. I just bought a 2G IPhone from cingular. I went ahead, upgraded it to 2.1 and activated with at&t, with data plan with same wireless plan. My intention is to use the IPhone with voice only plan with no data plan with Wifi and SMS access. I was reading post by Ramps and Avinash. Ramps said that ITunes should not be activated with firmware 2.1. But my ITunes is already activated with at&t using 2.1 firmware. So will the above process jailbreak and unlock my at&t IPhone, without any issues ? After jailbreaking and unlocking,I plan to use fake APN to disable the IPhone data, without disabling the WIfi access. So that way, I will not be charged exorbitant bills by at&t after getting rid of data plan. What should I do? Should I uninstall Itunes and reinstall it? I m confused..Please reply.

    Thanks
    Nilesh

  42. I have tried this in my safari browser. Safari is not allowing to download the APN file. May be because it is at&t locked phone..not sure..!!!

I am not sure what to do..

  43. Hi guys
I have 2g with 2.1 firmware, I used carefully explained information to unlock my Iphone. I put my t-mobile sim card before I began, everything worked fine( I could connect to itunes) except it won’t find t-mobile network, preventing me from calling, does any body has a solutions for that? thanks for support..

  44. I recently purchased a second hand iPhone off of my friend, and am currently an AT&T subscriber. My question is, when I unlock it and jailbreak it with quickpwn, will I have to activate the iPhone through itunes? or no? The reason I don’t want to do this, is because I do not want to pay the extra 20 dollars a month for data.

  45. Hi ,
I unlocked my iphone 2G and was it worked fine with my sim, until I reseted the whole iphone, deleting all the files and now its asking me to activate the iphone with the original sim card which I don’t have?? How do I bypass the activation screen to connect to itunes?? Please help, I hope I havent completely ruined the iphone which is a gift.. thankss

  46. quick question if you do the unlocking prosses do you have to use a sim adaptor or can you just use a regular sim card with no adaptor or anything? wasnt sure if it was still needed for this way of unlocking???????

  47. Thanks a lot. Sebastien..!!!!

I unlocked the IPhone..with no problems..Only trick is to get in DFU mode and restore it 2.1 firmware..Just FYI..2.1 firmware is optimized to preserve battery life for 2G..

    Cheers.!!!!!

  48. Ramps, Thanks a million! I spent hours trying to figure out what was wrong when I thought I was doing everything right.
    IMPORTANT!
I you are jailbreaking/unlocking iphone 2g, and are having “No Sim” and “Slide for Emergence” lock screens PLEASE READ…Saves you hours of time!!!

Happy Dayzz

  49. I have a 1st gen version iPhone I had it unlocked before but know that I updated it dosent work / I updated to firmware 2.1 when I restored it andused the progam of paw.. To unlocked but Im only able to make calls with the other sim card in the emergency menu I’m really frustrated cause I can use txt or the Internet only make calls in theemergency menu if I put the AT&T sim I can see everything how can I fixed this???

  50. Alright, so i bought my buddies iphone 1st gen, he did a restore and updated it to 2.2 for me before giving it to me. I popped in my sim, connected to computer, and ran quickpwn 2.2 i followed all the instructions, it installed everything, bootlogo is the pineapple all that good stuff. But i’m caught at the emergency call, ive tried using his old at&t simcard and it works fine, cydia, installer, everything is there. But then i switched again and it brought me right back to emergency screen and the “connect to itunes” window.

When i asked him if he activated via itunes after seeing “The crutial part is the iPhone firmware must never have been activated via iTunes in the first place otherwise it will always fail when you change SIM cards.” he said he’s pretty sure he did. So is there anything i can do on this one?

I used this video as a visual guide as how to unlock.. any help would be much appreciated.

  51. hey i also want to get this done on my iphone 2g using firmware 2.2… Does it work with quickpwn ???

If i back up my iphone using itunes..then if i choose to can i go back to the old back up?? Basically if it all goes wrong can i just recover my backup??

Also will effect my services on 02

  52. Just to share for those who may have encountered this error ““The version of Quickpawn can only jailbreak devices with versions>=2.0”. For my case was I had my iphone auto-lock set to 1 minute, and this seems to be the cause for the error. After I set to Never, the prompt no longer appeared, and installation of Quickpwn 2.2 was a breeze.

  53. HELP ME PLEASE! I have tried to do unlock my iPhone 3g with QuickPwn. I followed all directions but it encountered an error and now my iphone will not turn on at all, will not connect to itunes. It is just a blank black screen. PLEASE HELP! I have only had for two days!

  54. “Open iTunes with the iPhone connected and hold down the ‘home’ button. iTunes should recognise an iPone is connecting in ‘restore mode’.”

Ramps, when i do the above quote with a t-mobile sim, my 2g does NOT go to restore mode, just tells me that the sim card is not supported. I tried to do it with my old att card, then it goes to restore mode, but that doesn’t help, cause the idea is to make it work for t-mobile.

    any ideas??

  55. I got a Brand New, never activated 2G iPhone 4 days ago. I put in my own working att sim card, connected it to itunes, used quickpwn, and jailbroke the phone for version 2.2. The 2G iphone, with my att sim card in it, will show me one bar, without the AT&T letters, for about 2 minutes, then say that there is no service, and i cannot text or call, or do anything with the “phone” part. I put the same att sim card into my 3G iPhone, and it works with no problems, but 2G iPhone will not work with ANY sim card. ( I tried 2 other working att sim cards, from friends ) Is this a problem with the phone itself??? or is there a software problem?? ( phone came with 1.1.2 installed, had to use ziphone to get it unlocked so i could use quickpwn to unlock ) Maybe the whole software is just that screwed up????

  56. Hello…I have a 1.1.2 otb iphone jailbroken, but unlocked using TurboSim….will this method work for upgrading work in my case? Do I keep my Sim card, without the turbosim of course, inside my Iphone throughout the whole process? If I do it that way, will it not give me the “new sim card detected, connect to Itunes” message and be unlocked? Thanks

  57. Try leaving the SIM card out of the phone until the very end of the pwnage.

I used QuickPwn 2.2 for Windows. Pretty much followed the instructions at the top, except that I used 2.2 version instead of 2.1 for QuickPwn and firmware, and I did not insert the SIM card until the very end.

    What I did in detail:
    0. Take out SIM card from iPhone.

    1. Restore iPhone firmware. In iTunes (newest ver 8.1 i think), Shift-Click the Restore button; select downloaded firmware file (ver 2.2). At some point, iTunes will bitch that you got no SIM. That’s fine. Just close dialog box and iTunes. Your iPhone will have some message like “Insert SIM card to unlock/activate” or something. That is also fine.

    2. Run QuickPwn 2.2. Go through the GUI and do what it says (browse for firmware, browse for bootloaders, press home/power buttons, etc.). Don’t forget to check the Unlock checkbox!

    3. After QuickPwn is done, and your iPhone jailbreaks itself and reboots, it should just say “No Sim Installed” or something. Note that this is different from the message that was there after iTunes was done. The original message talked some trash about locks and activation. I believe that QuickPwn has an activation fake built-in.

    4. Plug in your SIM card and enjoy. I’ve done this with a T-Mobile SIM card and an old AT&T SIM card (from a non-iPhone) and both seem to work. (These were for separate iPhones; I was not hot-swapping them so I can’t say for sure if that would work.)

    Good Luck!

  58. This solution worked great for me in Canada with a used, locked and previously activated ATT 2G iPhone bought from U.S. on eBay. It arrived with an old ATT sim card inside it, which I replaced with my Speakout 711 card… BEFORE pwning.

I had tried many procedures with WinPwn and iActivate over 2 days and got hung at the pineapple or at the Russian guy or at the apple. But the 10 steps on this page (and the related firmware downloads) worked perfectly first time. I especially like step #10.

Note: iPhone was locked again after updating to 2.2. inside iTunes… I responded to their “Update” nagging and I shouldn’t have. So I re-did the exact 10 steps in the instructions on this page except I used the downloaded 2.2 firmware instead of the 2.1 firmware mentioned in steps #1 and #2.

Sebastien is correct: NO FREESTYLING! Follow the instructions exactly!

My service provider is Speakout 711, the cheapest phone-and-SMS-only solution in Canada. No data packages… therefore no mobile data to the iPhone, but anyway I just want a phone with WiFi until Canada’s data rates go way down.

Every Speakout 711 user wanting an iPhone should do this. Pass it on to them! Thanks Sebastien!

  59. hi, so my iphone is currently locked to O2, i have a “3” phone, if i put this in during the process will it work?
    please reply asap

  60. HI

I am in Thailand – have a NEW 2G iPhone – new been used – – what sort of procedure do I need to follow ? ? Is it true that once the phone is “unlocked” I can NOT swap SIM cards as i travel country to country ??

  61. I have been using my 2g unlocked iphone for two weeks and now all of a suddent he phone does not work. I can do everything but make a phone call. I even got the edge settings working, The GREEN pad is blank and will not work. It jumps back to the home screen after a few seconds and will not let me make a call, I can however receive a call. Any ideas on what to do?

  62. http://www.quickpwn.com/2008/09/jailbreak-iphone-21.html?commentPage=3

FOLLOW EXPLICITLY. This worked great for me.

I did have to get the data plan though.
FYI, I am getting another ATT phone to swap SIM, drop Data Plan, then swap SIM back to iPhone. I hope it works.

*Note: If you drop the data plan, make SURE you get BossPref or something to shut Edge off. EDGE is internet of cell lines. So you’ll be charged out the a$$ if no Data Plan.

    Will keep you all posted.

  63. i have one question for everyone that i cannot find on the internet anywhere.

it is said on one installation site (that may be outdated) that if the 4th and 5th #’s on the serial number on the back of the iphone read larger than 45 that means they have the new bootloader.

i assume that pwnage takes care of this? am i correct?

also, if i am an existing AT&T customer, with a data plan. do i need to unlock the iPhone 2G? in essence, i SHOULD be able to use my AT&T sim in it and just activate the phone using pwnage, or other methods like the ‘call yourself jailbreak method’ – however i will be using pwnage to do everything first and ten resort to other methods as a backup if this doesn’t work.

I will post on here my experiences to help other people wondering the same thing either this saturday, or within the next 3-4 weeks.

please help me answer my questions, because they are not answered on any forum anywhere else. especially reguarding the bootloader.

  64. Can someone who REALLY REALLY REALLY knows what they are talking about please add me too your MSN, if you have it… and talk me through this because none of it is working for me and its been like this for days and im ready to sell the phone again, and i have only just bought it. ARRRGGGG its doing my head in. handsvicci@hotmail.co.uk RAMPS PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

  65. Thank You Very Much .With your Instructions I can unlock an iphone 2G brong from USA easily. Now is running Ok, I made my first call ,and I’m surfing wifi. Let me to say that you need to expand your instructions about how to put the phone in restore mode in the first step with Itunes, the phone’s manual is not clear at all . Thank you again.Si alguien de Argentina u otro pais de habla española necesita traducción ,puede poner un post aqui que le contestaré en castellano.

  66. Hi,
I have read all of the feed back. I have a different problem. Followed all the steps and it worked perfectly as describe, right until the last step on QuickPwn. After following the sequence of buttons in step 7, an error message comes up in the last second before preparing to jailbreak sayin “Your device has connected in the wrong mode. This can be caused by incorrect following of instructions, or a faullty USB connection. Please try again”.

I have tried numerous times, and differnet IPOD leads, does it need to be an IPHONE lead specifically or are they universal. I have followed the steps 100% so I am thinking connection but has anyone heard of this? The leads work fine recognising the phone in I tunes to restore it???

    thanks

  67. To Andrew. You need to follow carefully screen indications. May be you faill to put the device in recovery mode. To do that you need to hold both home and on botton

  68. Please help me with my iPhone, I have successfully unlocked my iPhone and added apps to it. The problem is i cant get an music or anything on my 2g iPhone. Everytime i plug my iPhone in, it says to restore to the factory settings because iTunes can’t recognize it. Should i restore because i dont know if it would be locked again. Also I dont want to lose my apps, contacts and things when i restore. PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME.

  69. Eduardo, Argentina,

Thanks for your suggestion, I think I have been following it exacty, holding home for 5 secs, then home and power for 10 etc… I’m pretty sure it enters recovery mode as it goes to the apple screen then back to the plug in screen,

You or anyone else, any other ideas….

  70. can u help, i accidentally locked my 2g iphone, will this work to unlock it. Its just when i try to restore the phone itunes tells me the sim isnt supported? please help

  71. Can anybody help me with my above post??? I read on some German website that it maybe something to do with the USB port I am using on my computer. I have tried all four and not different… “Your device has connected in the wrong mode. This can be caused by incorrect following of instructions, or a faullty USB connection. Please try again”.

It appears a girl in Germany had the same problem but there was no answer on that thread either?

  72. to SHE1979 that is the usual message that Itunes display , this method can help you to unlock your phone .

  73. I’ve tried all the steps mention by Rams my girlfriends Iphone 2G

Happy Dayzz

The crutial part is the iPhone firmware must never have been activated via iTunes in the first place otherwise it will always fail when you change SIM cards.

    Ramps

But yet the Iphone still read no service when My Rogers(AT&T) sim card is installed. On top of that my Wi Fi feature is greyed out. Please Help…

  74. I attempted to unlock a 2G iPhone this afternoon. Before I could even get to the first step, I was told by iTunes that my SIM was not compatible and that I needed to insert one that was. I was using the TMobile SIM from my old phone. This prevented me from restoring the factory settings in step 1. Has anyone run into a similar problem and if so, how did you resolve it? Thanks.

  75. To Debra .With the instructiosn above you will be enable to unlock your Iphone .But you need to know the firmware version of your iphone .Also may be you need to download with itunes the right firmware to your iphone ,because firmware files that I download from links in this page doesn’t work .The process of restoration will be not complete with iphone because the iphone still will be locked, but you will have in the folder update (something like that)—- (in Itunes folder) the right firmware for your iphone. Loock that this quipwn soft runs with a unique firmware version , there are a new that work with the same process with 2,2 firmware(the newest)

  76. I can’t even tell you how MUCH TIME I’ve spend figuring out how to unlock my Iphone… but THANKS TO YOU it’s working!!!

Enjoying my iphone in the caribbean, ya man 🙂

  77. i went through the entire unlock/jailbreak process. Everything seem to have went along smoothly. Howvever, when i put my tmobile SIM in i get an error message “different sim detected” and prompted to go to itunes. And a message from itunes saying SIM Card not supported? anyone have any advice?

  78. I have a quick question. Does any SIM work after unlocking with Quickpwn or does it only work with the SIM used in QuickPWN. For example if i unlock it with T-mobile and if i insert any other GSM Sim (eg. another carrier in canada) will it work? OR do i need to unlock it with the new SIM?

  79. I would like the ability to swap a SIM card out when travelling to other countries, just like you can with a normal GSM phone.

Can somone confirm if, once unlocked via the instructions above, this is possible? Or do you have to run Quickpwn each time you swap a SIM (not really feasible while travelling). Many thanks!

  80. i have an i phone 2 g and it worked with my t mobile sim but i accidently updated it to 2.2 and now it does not recognize the sim cand and will only let me make emegency calls. what do i need to do in order to restore it so i can use my sim again ? is their a software that will fix this?

  81. Hi guys

I try to restore using the shift, restore button. But after a while it gives an error saying : The ipod “ipod” could not be restored. An unknown error occurred [5].

What is going wrong? I have itunes 8, i have .net and i am a windows user.

    Any tips?

  82. Hi guys,

I have fixed my first problem. “@ post 104” (I have an itouch 2g btw) but now i got another problem with quickpwn…. I downloaded “QuickPWN 2.2.1 for Windows”, but when i browse the same firmware, it sais :
“The IPSW file you selected does not match any firmware version QuickPwn supports. Either the IPSW file is corrupted, or the firmware version is unsupported.”

Than i downloaded another version of Quickpwn… “QuickPwn 2.2 for Windows”. When i browse the same file again, this time it sais “Firmware error string”.

My itouch version is 2.2.1(5H11a) after the firmware restore… but quickpwn doesnt allow me to continue

  83. Hey Sebastien,

I have a query here with the Quickpwn usage. I restored my Iphone to the firmware 2.0.1 using the file which has been downloaded using the link given above. But when i try proceeding with the Quickpin, i got that blue button enabled for the first page whereas in the second page in which i browsed and selected the same file which i used to restore the blue button is not enabled.

I am struck here. Please help me. Even i tried restoring the phone again and tried proceeding through the Quickpwn but i ended up with the sam result.

    Please someone help me.

  84. Hi Friend,

I am having a brand new iphone 2g and its just out of the box. I have sequentially followed all the mentioned steps and finally it got unlocked and i can navigate all through pages with just a touch of my finger on it. But the real pathetic scenario is that i dont find my network anywhere in it.

I just couldn’t make or recieve calls with it. Though i tried the whole process again but in vain. Experts here please help me to come over on this.

  85. Here is my situation: I got a brand new iphone 2g that was not activated previously. the phone came with an att card in it but I want to unlock it to use with my t-mobile sim card. when I connect the device (with att card in it) to my windows pc and run itune (8.0.2), itune gives me an interface to register it with att. if i take out the att sim card, then itune asks for the att sim card. a tutorial on how to unlock an 2g iphone on http://www.iClarified.com web site tells me that i should first restore the firmware using itunes. it says that i should select iphone on the left hand side of the itunes window but my problem is i do not see any ‘iphone’ button/text/icon on the itunes to do the restore and hence cannot even start the process… any help will be greatly appreciated. thanks.

  86. I was one of the idiots who clicked on “upgrade” and then ended up with a locked phone ” asking for the sim that came with the phone ”

Thanks to this guide, i recovered from this stupid move.

    you are the man!

    Thank you so much!

  87. I have completed these steps but when i put the t mobile sim card in it locks and says to connect to itunes… any help?

  88. hey man i did all you told me to do but the sim card is not unlocked well i am trying to use a t-mobile if you now how to do it or what i need to get email me back

  89. I have fully unlocked my 2g iphone using the steps above (thanks, by the way). Now, when i put my att sim in the phone works fine, but when i switch to my tmobile sim… the phone says “new sim detected, must connect to itunes. Well obviously itunes wont let me “set the phone” up cause its a tmobile sim. But the phone wont go off that screen, like the screen we all saw if you bought your phone new. I know its unlocked cause it says tmobile at the top with full signal. and if i call it from a different phone its goes through. Please, help me….

  90. I have tried unlocking following the directions yet when i connect my ipone itunes tells the sim card does not appear to be supported – and I can’t get to step on to restore – any advice welcome please………………………….

  91. Can I install just the Installer and the Cydia later. I already unlocked the iphone without adding those two. Can I add them now without messing up the rest of the stuff on the phone?

  92. hey i want to unlock my iphone 2g. it was previously used by a friend with at&t . they are giving it to me but i wana use tmobile. will it work even if they previosuly used it with itunes or whatever in the past? should i restore it before doing anything? do i have to put in the tmobile sim while in the process of unlocking it so it will register the sim? I have absolutely no idea about technology please help me. is there any possibility that the phone can break completely and become a “brick” or if it does not work can you just restore it and it will go back to original?

  93. ey dawg.. i just unlocked my iphone 2g 16GB… It works great!! i called my wife’s phone and vice versa and it works great!! THANK YOU GUYS!!

  94. so a friend of mine gave me his old 2g iphone, he upgraded to the 3g. i am moving to south korea in a month and really want to have an iphone (mainly for the apps). i want to run skype on it to make calls. should i jailbreak the phone to do this? i am a current at&t customer, so i have access to a sim card. i just didn’t want to get a 3g iphone from at&t, and pay ~$150/mn to use it in south korea ($2.24 a minute + data roaming).

  95. Solution, Fixed for Wifi Greyed out after jailbreak (Iphone 2G)

If your wifi connection problem is not due to AP settings (i.e. icon greyed out), I have tried various methods and found this to be the working solution to my case. I have used all jailbreak programs (quickpwn, winpwn, ziphone and others) and found the solution fix for Wifi. Would like to share so that the rest can spend their quality time on something more productive rather than going through what i have been through.

Despite the facts of some saying downgrade and upgrade of firmware, or using different version of itune to solve the wifi greyed out, it does not matter in this process.

I am on the following env when wifi is greyed out: Vista, Itune 8.0.2.2, Firmware 2.2.1 jailbreak. tried also on a corrupted restored and it works in both cases.

    Solution to the problem:
    – Use Itune to shift restore your firmware back to 2.0.2
    – Use winpwn to create custom firmware on 2.0.2 (if you are on ATT sim), do not need to select unlock
    – Shift restore iphone using the custom firmware created by winpwn

note: if you PC does not recognize iphone, first when iphone is detected as an unknown device, delete root hub one by one and vista will redetect one of them as mobile apple device. To do restore, switch off your phone, unplug USB cable, plug it in again while holding the home button for 20secs, vista will detect it as mobile device.

  96. Thank you very much my iphone was almost going to the rubbish, but after i followed the steps you described here, saved my phone.thanks very very much…

  97. hey there, so i restored my phone back to original settings and dowloaded the files you say to but:
when i run quickpwn and select the firmware dl’d before step one, the green loading bar on the bottom stays at about 1/5 and doesnt move
    what am i doing wrong?
please any help would be appreciated

also when i dl’d the bl 39 and bl46 files, it says that windows cannot open the files. but will i be able to once running quickpwn correctly?

    thanks

  98. hi i just went through every step and my i phone still wont work for t-mobile what did i do wrong

  99. You did not follow the instructions word for word!!! NO FRESTYLE AT ALL!!

Happy Dayzz

The crutial part is the iPhone firmware must never have been activated via iTunes in the first place otherwise it will always fail when you change SIM cards.

  100. hey
i have the 2.1 firmware on my phone and i want to upgrade it to 2.2
i just want to know, will i loose all my data on the phone (music, pics, contacts etc..)??

  101. Hi Pete,
Yes, it will wipe out everything but simply sync your iPhone afterwards and everything will be back.
    Sebastien

  102. Hi,

I tried your steps, but when I completed the steps, it is showing pine apple symbol, nothiing is coming up. I tried switch on/off of my phone, it is not working. Sebastien, please help me on this

  103. Thank you so much! I tried with a ton of other websites and this was the only one that made it understandable! Thanks again and I can’t wait to enjoy this.

  104. @ Ramps. thank you.
followed your method and “different sim detected please connect to itune” problem solved.
only thing i did different was that i did not clear the folder as you suggested. just restore with the file post by Sebastien use shift restore.

@sebastien. thanks for the great tutorial.

  105. the tutorial says to use version 2.1 but my phone is 2.2 so can i use version 2.2.1 for the unlocking process?

  106. Hi Sebastien & Ramps

I have successfully unlocked the phone. the only issue i face is that:
    1. When I put in the sim card it either shows no service or keeps searching.
    2. The phone does not recognize any wireless networks in the range and keeps looking for a wifi network.

    Please Help.

    Best regards

  107. Hey, I just got my t-mobile phone turned into a submarine…unsuccessful. So I was wondering if this process of yours also unlocks the iphone so that I can take out my sim card and put it in the iphone and call/text/use the apps?

    Any help would be great!!!

  108. Wow!!! Piece of cake, but it took me most the morning to do it! And, I thought I screwed up the phone. Bought a phone new/used, a 2G that had never been used and although I am an AT&T user, I didn’t want to go through their process and procedure plan (new 2-yr contract and data package expense) so wanted to unlock the phone and just drop my SIM card in the phone. Everything worked well as far as Jailbreaking and Unlocking…EXCEPT during the latter process I was holding down the “HOLD” key on my keyboard, not the “hold” button on the phone!!!

I only discovered that is was the “hold” button on the phone when watching a YouTube demo on restoring the iPhone setting which I thought I needed to do. Duh!!! Needless to say, the Pwnage program kept coming up with an error message since I was pressing the keyboard, not the phone button!

Anyway, thanks for the tutorial!!! But man, at 49-years-old, I feel like such a rookie when it comes to this type of stuff and my missing the mark about which “hold” button to use. 😉

  109. hi my 2g iphone has been restored and I downloaded all the files.when i click on the Quickpwn(approx 1.54 kb) it opens as .torrent file ,i get an error ‘Invalid menu handle’ .I am unable to run the Quickpwn…
    need ur help!!!!!

  110. hiya guys can you help me, it will let me restore my phone on itunes if i have the o2 simcard in but if i use a different one it will not allow me to do it, so do i restore it with the o2 sim card and then before the pwning process change the card to the desired one please let me know asap or the phone goes in the swimming pol cheers

  111. i restored my jailbroken iphone 2g to factory settings because itunes wouldnt let me sync after updating to the new itunes version 8 (the iphone wouldnt even come up on the side of the itunes). and now, when i turn it on, it just shows the loading apple…what should i do? time to time it vibrates. and the apple shows up without the circle loading icon. it just stays there…please help T~T

  112. Hi,

I followed the tutorial and also looked at a video on youtube and it did work. The only problem is that now I am not able to make phone calls at all. I can receive them and do everything else, but for some reason no calls. Any idea what shall I do?Thanks

  113. im tring to unlock my iphone with your method but the itunes page comes with sim card is not supported. which means i cant get to restore my iphone from the itunes settings. is there another way around this

  114. the jailbreak was succeessful but i can’t call or receive the calls either.because it is displaying no network.please help me out.

  115. I have just successfully jailbroken my iphone2G 2.21 with Quickpwn and it is working on T-mobile! Woohoo!!!!! Thank you! Now to see if my contacts and info will sync back… 🙂

  116. Quick questions will it be unlocked so i can use my 3 sim card in the phone

  117. quickpwn is not running in my computer . . everytime i click on a pop up bar appears saying “the application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135). click on OK to terminate the application.” now please tell me wat i do nw. . ?? how to get rid from this problem. .???

  118. I’ve done this about 6 times now and each time it won’t accept any other simcard. Cydia comes onto the phone but everytime I put in a new sim (other than o2) it says a new sim is detected and I need to plug it into iTunes. I don’t understand. And its the 8gbphone not the 3G.

  119. Hi Sebastien!

Thank you so so so so much! Finally, an easy and distinct way to unlock an iPhone!

I bought an iPhone 2G from a friend of mine for only 60 bucks cause she didn’t know how to unlock it =D…

But, I have one question: now that I have unlocked, as well added installer and Cydia (jailbroken?), my iPhone with QuickPwn 2.1 and 2.1 firmware, IS it possible to safely update firmware to 2.2.1, for example, through iTunes?

You are the man, thank you so much!

    Greetings from Europe!

  120. Sebastien,

I tried QuickPwn after restoring my 2G iPhone to 2.2.1 and it said that QuickPwn does not support this version!!

Can I simply restore from iTunes and use QuickPwn? Or do I need to downgrade the firmware and then use QuickPwn?
